Please help. I am trying to upgrade to OS X mountain Lion from10.5.8 how do I do it?

Assuming your Mac is compatible, phone the Apple Store, order a Mac OS X 10.6 DVD, install it, run Software Update, and get Mountain Lion from the Mac App Store.

I took my mac to an iStore in South Africa however my country does not have an iStore. Macbook upgraded from 10.5.8 to mountain lion. I lost the update when I tried to restore my old information. How can I get my update back without paying again?
Ok, that sounds like a valid approach...but now the question is, when you say you lost the upgrade when you tried to restore, exactly what do you mean? Restore from a Time Machine backup, or another kind of backup? What happened to the operating system when you did that?
If it damaged the operating system, you should be able to recover it by restarting your computer holding either the Option key (should result in a grey screen that shows the macintosh hard drive and a recovery hard drive), or by holding the Command and R keys while starting.
You can use the recovery hard drive to reinstall Mac OS X either way. If the Option key restart, click on the recovery hard drive to boot from that.
Then with either approach you will have a screen with a drop-down that gives you choices, such as install Mac OS X, Disk Utility, Terminal. You will want to use Install (or Reinstall) Mac OS X...note, you must be connected to the internet from this point on. -

Trying to Upgrade from Leopard 10.5 to Mountain Lion
Im trying to upgrade my imac model 2008 to mountain lion, (it will support it, I have upgraded the ram and confirmed it the serial # with the apple website to be sure) Currently its running leopard. Not snow leopard just leopard. This is cruital because it means Im still on osx version 10.5, it also means I don't have the app store icon available to me, as you need at least snow leopard or 10.6 to get the app store.
I've tried to upgrade to mountain lion via itunes,
it telling me its not available to me as Im in canada and even tho I know its avilable here itunes doesn't seem to know that.
I think If I can upgrade to snow leopard or lion and get the app store on my imac I can get around these issues. I can no longer download snow leopard from apple.Is there a reliable place to get it or to skip over it to lion?
Im not new to computeras at all but my experience with mac's is limited so I want to be sure I do this right the first time.
I need to get to 10.6, is there an easier way to do this than I've outlined?

Really nervous. Can't get any of the support instructions to work. Error occurred while installing mountain lion upgrade from 10.6.8. PLEASE HELP!
I know I'll be checking for responses all night. ThanksAssuming Mountain Lion did not install, you'll need to boot up from your Snow Leopard DVD (by holding down the C key while you reboot).
Once you've booted from the DVD (be patient, it's not exactly lightning fast!), you'll want to go to Utilities --> Disk Utility...and run Repair Disk.
The problem you're seeing is that there's something not right with your MacBook Pro's hard drive, and Repair Disk cannot be run on the same volume you booted from.
If Repair Disk was run successfully when you booted from the Snow Leopard DVD, and you see indications that whatever was wrong was corrected, you can now boot back up again from the MacBook Pro's hard drive. Once you're up and running on the internal hard drive, try installing Mountain Lion again. -

2GB of RAM is 10.7's minimum, others here claim 4GB+ is better. It might be with 10.8 that 8GB is better.
So OS X is bloating up now starting with 10.7 as it's a 64bit OS and no 3.5GB RAM limit like before, so your RAM limit of your older machine now has to be taken into consideration as a performance limitation.
Also 10.6 has Rosetta, you can still run older PPC programs (some you can't get anymore) with 10.6, but not 10.7 and beyond.
Some people have upgraded to 10.7 only to howl in pain as half their software and third party hardware drivers no longer work.

BTW, you can put 2 3-GB RAM modules in that machine for 6GB, Apple only says 4GB as that's all they had at that time.
So that's a performance bonus.

I can tell you not too many happy campers on 10.7, it's rather depressing with it's gray/black backgrounds and not friendly to desktop UI users
Spaces and Exposé is GONE in 10.7 for something called Mission Control which isn't quite as good as you can't see 4 or 16 screens at once like Spaces did.
OS X is turned more like a iPad UI too.
Anyway it takes some getting used too, you might want to employ it on new hardware instead. -

I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion 10.8.4.
Do I simply buy the new OS from the app store and run it to upgrade the OS? I'm new to Macs so not quite sure how this works.

You can also check by going to the menu, select About this Mac, click on More info…, then click System Report and select Software/Applications.
If you have applications that you want to use that aren’t compatible, you can retain Snow Leopard and create a new partition to install Mountain Lion on or you can run Snow Leopard server in a virtual mode.
If you can/do upgrade, I recommend you make a copy of the installer and move it out of your Applications folder. The installer self-destructs. The copy will keep you from having to download the installer again. You can make a bootable DVD/USB stick to install using this free program.
