Steps to upgrade to new iMac

I am upgrading from a 2009 vintage iMac to a 2013 iMac (27") which is supposed to be delivered today.  I have backed up my old iMac but I intend to do a clean install of all my apps so I have a fresh clen operating environment.  Is there anything else that I should to prepare for the transfer?
I also have a Drobo S that I will be attaching to the new machine.  I currently run it off of firewire connection however since the new iMac does not support tht anymore I am forced to use USB.  Since the Drobo S is not USB 3 will I run into any problems?
One less question for anyone that has made the transition and uses Lightroom and Photoshop.  Will Adobe force me to buy new licenses or can I just reinstall on the new machine?
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

The USB3 port drops to USB2 when that is what it sees connected, so not a problem.
Get all of your user account info together, figure out what you want the admin account and password to be and the standard accounts.  Have your AppleID and iCloud information handy.
The startup of the machine will lead you through all of the account info step-by-step.  Goes faster when you have it all infront of you.
Brings back the memories of just setting up a new iMac in the fall...exciting and hard to stay patient and do things one step at a time.
Have a great time and don't rush things.

How to upgrade my new iMac (10 july 2011) on Lion OS free?
There is no answer from Apple.
    Claim Reference: 496-695-535-291

you have to go to the site http://www.apple.com/benl/macosx/uptodate/
change the "benl" to the code of your country/region (else your reseller isn't recognized)
type in the Serial number + purchase date, reseller name etc. then u have to login with your apple id.
PS : you will need a credit card to complete the steps.

  • If I wanted to upgrade my new iMac in the future, how would I go about it?

I have no desire to void the 3 year Applecare plan I paid for.
I just bought the new iMac 2011, I would like to upgrade the RAM, the HDD and add an SSD in the future, without doubt. Does this mean that, in order to do so, and remain within warranty, I am going to have to bring my iMac to an Apple Store, buy the parts directly from them, and pay for labour?
Any clarification would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Greetings,
Memory you can upgrade yourself.  It is covered in the manual for your computer: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/imac_mid2011_ug.pdf
--This is the only customer installable part.
The hard drive is another matter.  iMacs are HIGHLY compact desktop computers.  Gaining access to the hard drive requires removing the LCD and the glass that covers it.  While one could do this in theory, and perhaps not damage any components in the process (which is what voids the warranty), I wouldn't risk it.
Apple Retail stores do not in general offer after market upgrades.  You could contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider to see if they do: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434
Personally, I'd buy a computer with an HD that meets my needs and use external drives as needed as they are very reasonably priced these days.  Its not like you're gonna be carrying the iMac around .  Or maybe you are?  27" portable?
Once the 3 years are up (if you keep the computer that long) you can start cracking it open if you like.  Though frankly there may something even better out by then.  Having the AppleCare ups the re-sale value so you could sell the old system online and buy something new.
    Hope that helps!

  • Can't install CS3 Upgrade on NEW iMac 24". An Imac DVD drive issue?

My CS3 Design Premium Upgrade CD fails to install Photoshop on my BRAND NEW iMac yet it is able to install everything else on the CS3 disc. I just bought this iMac yesterday and CS2/CS3 Upgrade are the FIRST things I installed (besides updates) when I turned it on. I'm still using 10.4.10.
I searched through the Adobe forums and the internet as to how others with the same issue have dealt with the problem, but it seems the most common reason is that people had installed Photoshop CS3 beta previously as well as older Flash/Acrobat plug-ins conflicting with the installation process. Further, these causes seem to be effecting Windows users.
So a few hours ago I tried to COPY the upgrade CD contents to my hard disk, I get the message:
"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in 'AdobePhotoshop 10en_US.dmg' could not be read or written. (Error code -36)."
This procedure of copying to the disk (and the resulting error message) is SPECIFICALLY addressed in the Adobe support pages TechNotes:
    http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb401429&sliceId=2
The page says that it may be a drive issue that is causing the problem. Of the 7 possible solutions given on the page, I've narrowed it down to only 1 option left (but I can't try it since I don't have another Mac!):
"*Solution 4*: Copy the software to the hard drive of a different computer.
*If the software copies successfully, the model of DVD drive on your original computer might not be able to read the DVD. Contact the DVD drive or computer manufacturer for any updates that might be available.*"
But what's funny (or annoying rather) is, I had a 20" Alum 2.4 iMac earlier this year (returned because of screen problem), and the CS3 upgrade installed without any problems on it!..??? And according to the iMac specs, the 20" and 24" models both have the same DVD drive make right?
Any ideas??? Are there other 24" iMac users who are experiencing similar problems? If not, then I guess I may have to return yet another iMac...which I'm reluctant to do since this screen is PERFECT! I'm scared to get another iMac with the dreaded screen gradient issue.

    I just solved the problem.
I tried copying the DVD files to the hard disk about 7-8 more times. The last try SUCCESSFULLY copied to the disk and I was able to install Photoshop CS3.
    Yay.

  • What steps to upgrade panther on imac

I want to upgrade an old imac 350mhz (Indigo, slot loader with 192 mb ram) with Panther retail disks. It's only for internet use by my infant children to access their school website etc.
I've carried out quite an exhaustive search over this forum to find an overview of the steps i need to action. So far i've added the latest firmware update, upgraded the hard drive to a 20gb drive, changed the pram battery and ordered another 512mb memory stick from Crucial.
Usually i'd zero write the hard drive and install panther on the clean disk. I'm worried that this will erase the firmware update. Is this right or need i not be worried?
If anybody can provide a link that easily identifies each step i would be very grateful.
I do not intend to leave OS 9.2.2 on the computer - Can this cause any issues further down the line such as if i need to boot from disk etc?

firmware dones't reside on the hard drive, its loaded to the motherboard, so it doens't matter what you do to the drive, the firmware update is there an nothing can change that.
getting rid of OS 9 shouldn't cause any problem, other than you won't be able to use classic in OS X.

  • Installing studio UPGRADE on new imac with no Logic installed.

Been running Logic Pro (7) on an old mac and have now bought a lovely new imac and also purchased upgrade to Logic Studio.
Do I need to install old Logic Pro before using the Studio upgrade discs? Or can I go straight to the Studio installation and simply plug in the dongle/key into the usb at the appropriate time?
I'm assuming because the old Pro version is pre-intel etc it is a somewhat redundant exercise to load it. But I don't want the Studio installation to stall because it 'can't find' a valid version of Logic to upgrade from.

I wouldn't be surprised if it's even the same disk just labeled differently.
I'm almost positive it is. In other words, it's not the install disk that makes the package an upgrade or full version, it's the license which is tied to the serial number.
If, theoretically, you owned an upgrade disk with serial, and a full version disk with serial, and you installed from one disk, but typed in the serial number that came with the other disk, you'd end up with a perfectly good install that was tied to whatever serial you put in. I don't think it'd matter what disk you used.

  • Upgrading to New iMac 2.4 ghz from iMac 1.8 ghz G5 - Logic 8 upgrade

    Hello all,
Got a question and have not searched the forms yet for the answer but thought I would ask for a quick response....
I'm upgrading my iMac from 1.8 G5 to one of the New iMac 2.4 ghz. Will be buying this week. I had Logic 7 running on the old G5 and then bought the Logic upgrade to Studio 8.0. My question is:
When I get the New iMac do I have to install logic 7 and then install the Logic 8 upgrade?? Or can I just install the upgrade pack? Does the upgrade have to sit on top of Logic 7 in the new machine?
    Thanks
    James

All you need to install the upgrade to 8 from 7 is your LP7 XSKey, which you have to plug in during the installation.

  • Free Upgrade on New iMac?

    Hi,
I purchased a new iMac in July am supposed to get a free upgrade to Snow Leopard. I signed up
to be notified and have yet to receive anything from Apple. Anyone know anything about this?
    thanks

    Lightscrib3,
You must apply for and purchase a Snow Leopard upgrade via the Up-To-Date program. This isn't completely free; you must pay $9.95 for product/shipping.
How you apply depends on how you purchased your eligible Mac. If you bought online, apply here. If you purchased at an Apple Store or authorized reseller, look here.

  • Iphoto not upgrading to new iMAC

I had posted this to a previous, but thought it was probably better to start a new thread.
I was having a problem with my iphoto - I believe corrupted on old iMAC. However, given I was going to upgrade the iMac anyway, thought I would transfer everything across to the new iMAC and that would be the best way forward.
Everything has come across from TimeMachine and looks to be working fine (eg. itunes).
However, when I have opened iphoto, it asks if I want to upgrade - which I let it do. This upgrade has now been at the spinning wheel for 6 days. I am going to let it continue for another day but I am not hopeful.
I think that iphoto is the only thing that is corrupted.
The new IMAC, didn't come with a start up disk
    - how do I delete the iphoto database and start again?
    - I want to try and recover from an earlier version of my iphoto database from timemachine and then add in the photos I am missing?
    - failing that, create a new iphoto database and load from other copies that I have (this will just take a long time as some online, some on disk etc)
    any assistance with this appreciated.

Since it's all about iPhoto, I'd recommend posting in the dedicated iPhoto discussion forum, where it's more likely that you'll find help.

  • Upgrade to new iMac

Ok, I am going to break down and buy a new iMac this Friday when Leopard comes out. I am going to need to move all my iPhone Contacts/iCal stuff, my iPhoto Pictures, some movies from iMovie and a website from iWeb.
Are there any websites or instructions anyplace on the best way to do this? I was hoping to find some online instructions/help rather then having to go in to the Apple Store and see someone there.
    Thanks!

*Hi S.Proctor, Fellow CAian, Welcome* to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
*Francine Schweider* a |||| bar poster in these forums has what I think is an excellent thought. If I were buying I would do this. Some other major posters in these forums are also going this way.
"I plan to buy my next computer before Leopard comes out. Why? Because generally new Mac computers will not run any system older than the one they ship with, I want to be able to use the fully mature Tiger system, rather than having to rely entirely on Leopard. Who knows whether the software I own will be fully compatible with Leopard? Or how long it will take for developers (think Adobe) to update if there are incompatibilities with Leopard. Or even just how stable and reliable and all like that Leopard will be.
    Francine"
    Enjoy your new Mac, JP

  • Is it Mandatory to run SU25 steps after Upgrading to new release

    Hello All,
I have few questions regaring Security Upgrade.
We recently upgraded to a new release. So, when I try to modify a role in Dev a pop up came "which states that need to run steps 2 a to 2 c in SU25" but when clicked on continue the pop up never came after that in any role.
My question: Is it really required to run SU25 steps after any upgrade? Is it going to affect any users if dont run the steps and continue?
    Regard's

You are missing the purpose of the tool - namely Step 2B.
2B is the key to reducing your effort and building good roles in the first place when you enter 2C. If you get that part right, then step 2C is popcorn and watching the tele while your program runs (not a(n) (e)CATT script...). You can do this in standard if you are disciplined!
A special aspect is to choose the "Authorization Object" view which is available in SU24 but not in SU25. If you restrict the number of roles to few single roles (or series of them without derivation) which are intact then you can survive a release upgrade without toasting your roles or the SU24 data updates.
SU25 is very usefull for such role builds!
If you want all the lights to turn green then use SUPC and transport them through. God help anyone who used roles as menu's and deleted standard or maintained authorizations...
SAP security is a specialized task which touches all applications you use...
    Cheers,
    Julius

  • Mountain lion upgrade for new iMac

    Hi All,
I was reading about how if you purchased an iMac after 6/11, that you're eligible for a free upgrade to Mountain Lion.
Customers must request their Up-to-Date upgrade within 30 days of purchasing their Mac computer. Customers who purchase a qualifying Mac between June 11, 2012 and the date when Mountain Lion is available in the Mac App Store will have 30 days from the OS X Mountain Lion release date to make a request.
However, I'm not seeing how to go about requesting the upgrade. Here's the url that talksa bout the free update.
    http://www.apple.com/osx/uptodate/
    Any ideas?

I would guess that a page would go live once ML is released.

  • Upgrading brand new iMac 3.06 4G

    Hi All,
I would like to know if there is some type of raid solution for this computer please? Also, is there a way to connect this imac to a G5 quad or Pc to run external samplers.
Thanks, all answers and suggestions are welcome.
    Stash

There are several RAID 5/10 external boxes that run on Firewire 800 that are affordable. I have several pro graphics shops that use these as their main file server with RAID backup and decent transfer speeds.
Ideally you'd want a hardware (PCI) RAID controller card in a tower form and connect through SCSI or SATA. However, I've been quite pleased with the Firewire 800 external RAIDS. You still boot off your internal drive. And keep data and apps on the RAID. You can backup the boot disk on the RAID. I'm considering a fast Firewire 800 RAID to help with hi-fi audio and video I tinker with with FCS2.

  • Installing CS3 upgrade on new iMac (from G5)

The serial no. for CS2 renders error message: "Serial no. does not match...".

As Bob says, we're users here. We have no access to information about serial numbers.
You need to call Adobe Customer Service for serial number issues.
InDesign CS3 was released in 2007, and Mountain Lion in 2012 so it's pretty likely there will be some incompatibilities.
