Stereo-ac3 sound conflict

Please we need help urgently. We have created a DVD with an AC3 Audio file. But if it is played on a DVD player that is only able to play stereo files the sound of our ACS 3 is very bad. So we have now added a stereo file as well. Is it possible that the DVD communicates with the player it is playing in and asks if the player is able to play dolby digita and then selectes the ACS file. Or if the DVD gets the information from the player that it is only able to play stereo files it selects the stereo file. We believe that it has to do with GPRM and SPRM. But how is it done exactly? So if anybody knows about this problem please help us. Thank you very much and all the best !

I do not believe that there is an SPRM in the spec for "default # of playback channels". There is an SPRM for audio format, but both streams will be AC3 in your case.
I would do two things -
Make your stereo stream the 1st (default) stream, and add a menu to choose the audio format manually.
Experiment with the settings in the surround encode in Compressor. The setting that will have the most effect is the "surround downmix", this is how much the level of the surround channels is attenuated when the surround is downmixed to stereo by the player. Depending on what type of mix you have and what's in the surround speakers, this can make a big difference.
Hope this helps -

  • Encoding Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC3) sound in MP4 files using AC3 pass-through

Looking for an application that will encode Dolby Digital 5.1 (AC3) sound in an .mp4 container using AC3 pass-through for playing videos with surround sound on ATV.
Handbrake is out of the question because I run Tiger. The Tiger version cannot do AC3 pass-through.
Visual Hub is no longer available.
    Any other options?

You may need Apple's MPEG2 QT plugin as well for MPEGStreamclip.
Also, consider if running windows in parallels/Boot Camp etc that there's a windows version, and possibly a linux version.
VisualHub code was released open source - Google FilRedux and PunyVid (iSquint derivative). Not tried either though.

  • Why doesn't Quicktime Support MPEG-2 with AC3 sound?

Last summer I bought a Mac Mini so I could use iMovie and iDVD to convert and edit my 20 year old VHS tapes of family events to DVDs. This Christmas I got a Samsung DVD Recorer-VCR unit that easily copies VHS to DVD in MPEG-2 format with AC3 sound.
So, I'm all set to use my Mac Mini and begin my family archives project - or so I thouhgt. I found that Quicktime and iMovie don't read MPEG-2!! Then I was relieved to find that there is a plug-in that works with Quicktime Pro that will read MPEG-2. I spent the $50 to download these 2 programs and sure enough Quikcktime Pro will now read the MPEG-2 files from my Samsung unit. However, there is no sound!!!
Is Apple purposely making it impossible to do what I'm trying to do?
Why doesn't Quicktime or iMovie support MPEG-2 with AC3 sound?
Is there some other sound format that is normally used with MPEG-2?
Why would someone create software that reads movie files but doesn'rt read the sound that goes with them?
If I can't hear my little girl sing on these movies, then this whole project is a big waste of time and money!!
I hope someone from Apple can give me some answers.

FWIW, MPEG is a distribution format, not an editing format. The best way would be to convert VHS to DV, edit it in iMovie and burn THAT to DVDs.
Sure, MPEG is a nice compressed format taking much less space than DV but the compression takes away quality.
IMO the best approach with MPEG source would be to edit (yes, it CAN be edited) it with apps like MPEG Streamclip (very limited editing features) or Capty MPEG Edit EX (more features) and author the edited MPEGs via apps like Toast, DVDSP, Capty MPEG Edit, Sizzle etc. THEN you won't lose any quality (unless some of the GOPs have to be re-encoded, that is).
BTW, unlike QT Player, MPEG Streamclip can play also AC3 or PCM audio in MPEG files.

can you help me find a sound codec component of quicktime, an AC3 sound codec is needed, it says it needs a required AC3 sound component of quicktime, I dont know what it is and where to find it, can you help me with this?

  • Stereo, AC3 and DTS menu

It's been 7 years or so since I made a DVD with three sorts of audio.
Can anyone give me a quick reminder how it's done?
I need a menu, where the user can select Stereo, AC3 or DTS.
I think default should be stereo, am I correct?
I've tried to search on the internet and Adobe content: I can't find the procedure no more.
    1. So, all audio tracks will be given to me.
    2. I suppose I stack them under the encoded video.
    3. I need to make a menu that enables selection.
    4. Maybe I need a bit budget calculation?
If anyone can give me a quick reference list, then that would be great.

I found out how to do this, but the provided link doesn't tell and "Set Buttons to select" is something I can't find either.
However, a right click on a button helps:
    Audio tracks for DVD:
PCM:   a stereo (interleaved) WAV. Please convert it to Dolby 2.0 192kbps which is almost just as good but less bulky.
    AC3:    An early surround format. (max. 640 kbit/s, mostly 448 kbit/s)
DTS:    The best surround but not always useable for consumers. (max. 1509.75 kbit/s typ. 754.5 kbit/s)
For multiple formats in one timeline:
Stack the encoded audiotracks under the video.
Create some buttons for audio selection purposes. Make sure the user encounters them first.
Right click on the buttons and choose "Specify Link" and then select the right audio track the button should activate.
The button can advance to a second menu where the user can select & play videos. The audio will stay at the same selected track. Make sure the user can navigate back to the audio selection menu.
Please remind DTS and AC3 and DD2 all use up some of the disc space AND some of the 8 kbp/s streaming speed. Clever bit calculations are needed!
I think this might be it.

  • Clueless how to mate the AC3 sound file given me with my video project

Hi gang. This morning I started researching how to do this, but haven't figured it out yet.
My DSLR projct has ben edited on Premiere Pro CS5. I created the project in stereo and once I picture locked, outputted an OMF file to the sound mixer.
He just delievered to me an AC3 file. I've no idea what to do next.
I'd like to mate the AC3 with my video, of course. Do I do that in Premiere Pro? Do I export an uncompressed AVI video file and somehow mate the two together somewhere else?
    Clueless here.
(of note: This Friday I am having a screening of three of my short films, including this one. The screener will be on DVD and has to be an auto play DVD, something you can pop into the player, no menus, it just plays and goes from video to video. I created a couple test DVD's in Encore and it worked.)
Heres all the specs for the export:
    Name: Dolby Digital Professional 5.1
Description: Dolby Digital 5.1 audio at 448 kbps
    File Extension: ac3
Estimated file size: 192.26 MB/hour of source
    Segmentation on cluster disabled
    Audio Encoder
                    Format: AC3
                    Sample Rate: 48.000kHz
                    Channels: 6
                    Bits Per Sample: 16

                    Surround Mix Level: -3dB
                    Dolby Surround Mode: None
                    LFE Exists: Yes
                    Dialog Normalization: -27 dbFS

Export out a video file.  Bring that and the .ac3 file into Encore for DVD authoring.

  • Encore: no sound from ac3 Sound generated by Premiere

what can I do? I genereated files for both DVD and BluRay and wanted to do the DVD first in Encore but the ac3 Track does not make any sound?

Now that you ask this kind of question ... I did not pay anything extra .. I just use the tools provided in Premiere CC, exporting the timeline from there, choosing BluRay or DVD through the Media-option and choose MPEG2 BluRay as the concert is only 1.07 hours long so I am fine with a single-layer DVD and BluRay. Preset is Custom, giving me 1920x1080 pixels option, and for the sound Dolby Digital, 192 kbps, 48 KHz, Stereo 16 bit, under Output, as Source it also enlists 5.1.
In the audio format settings I ticked in both boxes the format and codec for 5.1.
PCM and Surcode each remaind unticked because it seems it is either or. Maybe that is why I had only the AC3 soundtrack (without sound though ... or distorted and there was no change on the dummy that I just watched or checked). And so I decided to generate a stereo (PCM) soundtrack on it's own and add that as a second soundtrack for Encore to make it available.
So when you mentioned Surcode encoder I thought you actually meant the decoder that is used with the media-tool in Encore.
Strange thing by the way: When I checked the timeline for chapters it actually got two each for every chapter, the first each only being like 3 seconds long and I thought just leave it be and connect the chapterpage to the first one. But checking the chapterjump within viewing it, I had to find out, that I got double chapter-markings indeed if I press the next-chapter button on the remote. Through the chapter-index it's all fine, but of course this is because I individually assigned the links to the chapter marks the way they should be.
Yet: What is the solution for the sound? Wonder if there is a way to sort that out.
As I originally had the idea to deliver the box-set today (last chance before Christmas) I now will provide them with a dummy and some annotations that the real one will come in the new year as early as possible. But it was not the solution I intended. But I have to take it the way it is: learn from this experience and next time it will be quicker as I will (hopefully) know how to handle stuff and there are like 9 more stage-performances in the pipeline ...

  • Does Final Cut Pro X import AC3 sound from an SONY AVCHD  Camera?

    Hi
    I have a Sony AVCHD camera HDR-XR200.
I have been using Vegas Platinum in a PC. Surround sound 5.1 is supported.
I purchased FCPX for its "64 bit processing. better use of cores and threads, and 5.1 sound (which iMovie does not support).
However, when I use FCPX to import from the camera, i only get stereo  channels.
I have set the properties to 5.1 sound.
Can anyone shed light on why this does not work?
    Thanks
    Barry

Thanks Daniel for the reply and the URL.
I have sent the following to the Apple Feedback site.
"I have FCPX which claims to support AVCHD and Surround Sound AC3.
When I import toFCPX from my HDR-XR200 handicam, the audio is down mixed to stereo. I cannot get the 5.1 sound recorded in the camera to accompany the video.
Is this advertised feature missing, is this a bug or should I be doing something that is not immediately apparent to the application."
It seems that many of us who have great expectations for FCPX whould like some feedback from Apple.

  • Can't get ac3 sound to work

I have rent a movie and cannot get ac3 to work properly.
I have rent movies before so it's nothing wrong whit my computer. But this time I can't get any sound at all is it to do whit iTunes update I am running the last update for iTunes.

Quicktime, Quicktime Pro and iTunes don't convert "muxed" ( muxed means multiplexed where the audio and video are stored on the same track) video files properly. It only plays the video and not the audio.
See:iPod plays video but not audio.
You need a 3rd party converter to convert the file with both audio and video.
See this for help: Guide to converting video for iPod (Mac/Windows).

  • Stereo Microphone Sound Cards

LabVIEW has a set of SI-Config/Read/etc VI's that take data from the computer's microphone input. A configuration option is Mono-versus-Stereo. Does anybody have a list (or even one example) of Stereo sound input cards that work with these LabVIEW SI VIs? (Including information such as: Microphone or Line level)
    Thanks,
    [email protected]

    Les,
I apologize for any confusion. What version of LabVIEW are you using? I know 7.0 has the example, but Im not sure what other versions have it. Ill attach it in case you still want it, but it looks like you have more of a hardware issue/question.
The sound VIs make dll function calls to C:\Program Files\National Instruments\LabVIEW 7.0\resource\lvsound.dll. Any mic or line in input should be configurable through this dll. It can handle both mono and stereo, 8-bit or 16-bit. These parameters are returned from the dll call from SI Read.vi, and can be viewed directly but putting indicators on the outputs from the dll call inside SI Read.vi.
Most any newer sound card should be compatible with this dll. Im surprised y
ou are having problems. What model/manufacturer sound card are you using? Most cards are now configurable for both input and output. I have an integrated sound card on my home computer. I was able to configure the three lines (line in, line out, and mic) for 6-channel output, 2 channels per line. Im pretty sure I could configure them all to be inputs as well, but it just depends on the manufacturer.
I just tested the attached VI here at work. Im on a Dell gx150 with their standard integrated sound card with a line in, line out, and mic. I was able to pick out a sound signal by plugging my speakers into the mic input and tapping them a bit. The line in didnt work the same, but that may be because I wasnt using an amplified mic (simply using my speakers).
Let me know if anything here helps, and if not, Ill be happy to keep digging. Thanks, and have a great day!

  • Differences between ac3 sound conformity

I saved on my Server a different sorts of ac3 "native" assets sound tracks.
That's means that I don't create it using a proper software.
All audio tracks playing normally on encore 1.5 and I can normally burn and hear on DVD stand alone, but after upgrade on version 2.0, lot of these tracks don't give any sort of sound.
What are the main conforming features of an AC3 audio track?
Do you know a software who can edit and conforming this?
    Thanks

sorry but is the first time I hear this... Do you mean "Encore conforms ac3 audio tracks? " It's strange because when I import the audio stream no operation will start and cpu is at zero.
    I cannot hear sound.
    Please refine your precious info

  • AC3 sounds garbled when played back through the asset window

i have a 5.1 AC3 file i made with A.Pack with DVDSP3 (now using DVDSP4) and when i played the file back in my asset window via S/PDIF out on the Mac to a Dolby Digital Capable 5.1 amp (having the prefs in DVDSP set to SPDIF not default in the simulation pref window)...it sounds REALLY garbled.....i know what a raw AC3 file sounds like played back throught a standard amp (like a code-not being able to hear anything BUT that)...and the file i tried to play back was still barely understandable...but sounded like a robot. is this a bug or am i doing something wrong?

Awesome! This fix worked for me as well. I too don't know what happened after my system had been working just fine for years, then today it was all garbled. All is well now. Thanks!

  • Please help! t61p: bluetooth stereo headset sound coming from only one side?!!

Just bought a X5i stereo bluetooth headset (A2DP protocol) from BlueAnt and paired it with T61P.  The laptop recognized it and it connected to it.  When i started playing audio though, the sound is coming only from one side of the headset.  Do I need to update the bluetooth drivers for lenovo??  What do i need to do?  Please help!

  • Anyone get Front Row/Quicktime to work with ac3 sound?

I've searched and searched and tries various codecs and components, but I still can't get quicktime or front row to play sound on .vob files or mpeg-2 files with ac3 muxed in audio.
    Video plays, no sound.
    Has anyone cracked this?

QuickTime is hopeless at playing surround sound, it is hopeless at doing multiple audio tracks, and is hopeless at doing subtitles.
VLC, and even Windows Media Player (for Windows) do a better job.
However, there is one small hope for Mac kind. FrontRow 2.0 as will be included with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, will add the ability for FrontRow to play VIDEO_TS folders (that is copies of DVDs). It will not however use QuickTime to do this (as detailed above QuickTime is useless at this), instead it uses the same DVDFramework that the Apple DVD Player application uses, and therefore like the DVD Player will be able to do AC3, multiple audio tracks, and subtitles.
Apple should be embarrassed over the fact that QuickTime; supposedly God's gift to multimedia is a hindrance and not a help in this area.
Note: According to Apple's website, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard will include the same QuickTime 7.2 version as is current in Tiger, therefore we will not see any improvements in QuickTime in Leopard (at least not at the time of Leopard shipping).

  • IPhone 4 car stereo crackling sound

Ok, so I had a sound system put into my 99 chevy pickup a few months back from a very well known audio shop. I recently bought an iPhone 4(iOS 5). Anyways, everytime I connect to the stereo through data cable, I get a terrible crackling/popping sound when playing music. However, when I connect through an Aux cord I have no issues. I have replaced the data cable 3 or 4 times now(standard apple cable and some off brand ones we sell at work) and the problem persists. I went back to the audio installer thinking it was a fault in the deck. They replaced the deck, and the problem was still there. We plugged in a flashdrive with some music one of the employees had and there was no issue. I have a brand new Kenwood Excelon deck, and as stated before I'm running iOS 5 on my iPhone 4. Has anyone had this issue before? Does anyone know a fix? Im so disappointed right now. I now have to switch tracks and what not through the phone on my aux connection while driving, which is very dangerous. One of my favorite features was the ability to control it from the deck and now that is the one thing I can't have because I refuse to listen to the popping and crackling.

So I was able to fix this issue and I feel so dumb. I simply turned the phone off and back on. No problems since. If only I woulda done that first
