Stereo in Imovie 09

I shot a video of a concert but when I put it on youtube discovered that it is mono.  Went back to camera and connected to speakers and it plays in both.  Read a bit and think it's an imovie export thing.  Is there a fix in the way you export?  How can I get full stereo?

So, is there a solution in IMOVIE?
Possibly.  From what you describe, I think the audio in your project exists only on one of the two descrete, left or right, stereo audio tracks.  Depending on what you're playing it back on, that single channel of audio is either being played back in mono, so that the same audio comes through both speakers, or in stereo, with audio only being played through the left or right speaker.
It might be worth outputting (Sharing) your project and frocing it to use mono audio.
Try this.  In iMovie, choose Share>Export using QuickTime.
From the Export dropdown menu select Movie to QuickTime Movie.  Now click the Options button.
Click the Setting button in the audio section and select Mono instead of Stereo from the Channels dropdown menu.
Now try playing back the resulting file.  I don't know much about uploading to YouTube, but see if you can upload this new file and see what happens with the audio.

  • I have recorded in mono how do I convert to stereo in imovie 08

I have recorded  in mono how do I get movie to play in stereo?

I'm assuming that you have recorded in mono, then after editing the project and exporting it, the movie plays audio through one channel only on your speaker system.
Try exporting the project using "Share > Export using QuickTime". In QuickTime choose an appropriate video setting (such as H.264). The Sound Settings will probably show the default "Stereo (L R)", as the movie is being exported from iMovie which always assumes you are using stereo. Click on the Settings box - in the window that opens, for Channels select Mono. This may seem counter intuitive, but will allow the audio to be heard through both speakers after exporting. Of course, the audio will be identical in both channels - not true Left/Right stereo.
I haven't tested this but believe I've seen this tip elsewhere in the forum. Hopefully, I haven't misunderstood what you are trying to do.

  • Warning: 5.1 sound from camcorders: bug in iMovie '08

In another thread there is a eror reported.
The 5.1 sound from the Pana SD1 is not well down mixed to stereo by iMovie '08.
Resulting a strong right and weak left channel.
The problem is fully reported and documented to Apple and in this other thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5367099#5367099
Earlier I reported the 5.1 sound downmix to stereo bug in iMovie.
At the moment I am testing two Sony camcorders: HDR-SR7E en HDR-CX6EK. The first is officially supported by Apple (iMovie '08 camcorder list) and the other is the latest memory card camcorder by Sony.
Both camcorders have 5.1 sound on board and YES these camcorders cause the same problem in iMovie '08.
There definitely is a 5.1 stereo downmix bug in iMovie '08.
I do hope Apple can and will fix this.

I can hardly imagine, how you can record real surround sound wihtout a bunch of mic on location but just with a single located, small spot, tiny device (=camcorder), but marketing of those devices proof me wrong..
don't forget to report direct to Apple (this is just the user board here....):

  • Audio Settings Question in iMovie

    Hi everyone,
I've been asked to do a vlog and I've been told the specs are:
    .wmv 640x480, 1.5MB bitrate (aka 1,500 kb), audio 128kbs 44kz stereo
Is iMovie capable of doing all of these and if so where do I find out how to alter the audio and bitrate thing. I've found the screen size, but just wondered about the rest.
    Thanks

You can't export to WMP formats without first purchasing an upgrade from http://flip4mac.com

  • I want to record live stereo audio (using Mobile In)

with the new 30-pin connectors for iPad and iPhone making it possible to record stereo audio (like Line6 Mobile In), I'd like to record in stereo to iMovie on my iPhone4.
Does iMovie use Core Audio? If so, then this would be a great feature to add if it isn't there already. I haven't found a way to record stereo digital audio into any camera/movie app yet...
    thanks
    Jeff

It all depends on your expectations. A USB condenser mic is a good way to start. If you want better quality, you'd want to use several mics running through a mixer. If you want to be able to mix after recording, you should look into an audio interface with several channels that will allow you to do a multitrack recording in GB.
Another idea: are you using a PA system? Then feeding the audio from the mixing console might be a good idea, maybe with an additional track capturing the live audio and the audience reaction with an extra mic.
Possibilities are plenty and not so confusing when you think them through ...

  • Analog to digital: sound is only in left speaker, but I want it in both

I converted an old VHS tape to digital with my digital camcorder and imported it to iMovie. However, the VCR only had one audio output, not two for Right and Left. I tapped into the left (as I could only do one or the other).
Now, all my sound only comes through the left channel. I know the video will not be stereo, but is there a way I can get sound through the left and right channels?

Hmmm, I'm afraid this may be a lost cause. Is there really no way to simply make the movie mono instead of stereo with iMovie? The suggestion of using QuickTime didn't work for me, as I described above, but I found a way to accomplish the same result wih iTunes. The problem is, first off, this seems really hokey to have to go through so many steps, in different programs, just to make the sound mono. Secondly, when I import the (now mono) audio back into iMovie, it will be very difficult to make it sync up perfectly with the video. Multiply this task with about twenty or more clips, and it will be very time consuming, and likely to have audio that does not match perfectly with the video (which is simply not acceptable). Is that really the best (only) way to get the sound to come out of both speakers?

  • Any way to create an iMovie Stereo Mix?

I've created a project with split audio tracks, when I exported it to my camera using imovie 4 it would mix the tracks, no with five it keeps them separate. Any way to mix down the two tracks to create a stereo mix or at least a mono mix of the two tracks?
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi David,
There ara a number of ways around this . perhaps the 1st one to try is 'Share" from the pull down menu>Quicktime>Expert Settings>Share>Sound to AIFF Options>Linear, mono or stereo AIFF at48kHz16 bit Go!
How long is the track. Could take a while...
    2. If you have Final Cut , you have more control on output including outputing as mono.
    3. Sound Studio http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/4811
will give plenty of features for a limited time so you can get it done.

  • Using iMovie 09 with stereo pairs?

Talking to the geniuses at the local Apple store, it seems clear that iMovie 09 saves Ken Burns pan/crops to the images, not as separate data. This makes it difficult to create identical moves on matching stereo pairs, as the camera pans and crops would have to be exactly the same for the right and left views of the pair.
I'm thinking there's a work around for this limitation but I need to learn more about how iMovie saves its files.
Consider the case where a transition and pan/crop is created for successive right view images, then this is exported as a Quicktime movie, then iMovie is closed. If it is possible in Finder (not in iMovie) to substitute the left view image source files for the right view image source files, using precisely the same file names, then when iMovie opens again it would not know the difference and could export a left view Quicktime movie.
But I can't investigate this hypothesis because I can't find the source files that iMovie uses. Performing a swap out with the original files has no effect (at least, I saw no change in the thumbnails and the playback when using well marked test files. So are there hidden copies of the source files that iMovie uses? And if so, how do I locate these so I can swap them out?
I hope I'm making myself clear here. When I explained what I was trying to do at the Apple store today, the geniuses required several reiterations before they got it, because my intent is so unconventional and they had no reference point. But they did get it, as far as using iMovie as it was designed to be used, and said, no, you can't do this with iMovie because swapping out images within the program removes any Ken Burns pan/crops you have set for them. And there is no way to numerically set these parameters so they are identical in a new movie to those in a different movie.
I didn't ask them about a workaround that would fool iMovie when it is reopened into thinking it is using the same images, but I'm asking here. If I know how to locate those source image files, I can do the rest.
Or am I completely missing something that should be obvious?
(There's software for Windows called ProShow Gold that allows saving camera movements separately from images, and this is used for making stereoscopic slide shows with Ken Burns pan/crops. But I want to do this on a Mac.)
    Thanks.

    Karsten,
Thanks for that link! I think your arrows will point me in the right direction.
In my effort, the images for stereo projection are placed side by side as a pair in a shared frame, 2800x1050 total resolution. Quicktime Pro can make these and show these, and also a free stereo avi editor called Stereo Movie Maker for Windows. For stereo 3D from start to finish, it is important to be cross platform proficient. Of course, the Mac can make this OS switch, but I'd like to see more stereo 3D options in Mac native software, because right now, there aren't any. Our projection software is a custom build by programmers at UC Davis and our projection system runs from an Intel Mac Pro feeding dual Hitachi projectors.
I made a movie of a slide show with iPhoto, using 19th Century stereocard views, but wanted to take the presentation into Ken Burns territory with camera moves that are coordinated between the right and left views. I think iMovie 09 can do this with some, as you say, (ab)use. Hackers are the bleeding edge, right?
Our stereo theater is at Lake Tahoe, Incline Village, Nevada, within the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center located on the Sierra Nevada College campus. The building is too new to see on Google Earth (or Google Earth imagery is too behind to show a building four years old).

  • Imovie and audio - dealing with separate stereo tracks in imovie

The footage I am working with has stereo recording - a boom mike (L) and a lapel mike (R) were used simultaneously. However, I want to use only the left track that has the boom mike because the guy with the lapel mike is talking too much and drowning out the conversations on the boom mike.
I see that there are separate tracks playing in imovie but I see no way to use only the left or right track in the audio. What do I need to do? if iMovie cannot handle it, can I export the audio as a stereo track and edit it in Garageband, then re-import it?

    Hi
if iMovie cannot handle it, can I export the audio as a stereo track and edit it in Garageband, then re-import it?
Yes - iMovie HD or other - Can't handle this.
Export out - as QuickTime expert mode and Audio only and as .aiff
Put it into an Audio editor - like GarageBand or Audacity (free on internet)
Edit it and save as .aiff
Re-import into iMovie and put on bottom track - silencing out top-track.
    Done this many times -Works.

I have recorded mono on a sony hxrmc200e how can i play stereo when I download from imovie to fce 4??

While you really can't make a mono track true stereo, you can make it play to both left and right channels.  Pan the track to center (0), or you can duplicate the track and pan one copy left (-1) and the other right (1) ... or select both tracks in the Timeline (original and copy) and hit Option l (lowercase L) to make them a stereo pair.

  • Audio in iMovie-  mono to stereo  help please

I have an entire 20 minute project in imovie that was recorded with a at835 mono shotgun mic. The audio sounds fine on my computer but poor and faint on other dvd players with their speakers. I was told that my audio files are in mono and need to be in stereo. How can i do this? and is there an easier way for my future use?

  • Stereo recording with external mic in iMovie

    Hey everybody
So, this question has probably been up before but I cant´t figure it out.
    First:
I want to make a video and live recording of one of my new songs using iMovie.
I use a KM 184 condeser microphone through a duet audio interface. I can see here that there is sound on both output channels (stereo) also in logic pro and garageband.
    Problem:
Choosing microphone input in iMovie I only get left channel signal, that is NO stereo sound.
I want to use one microphone but I can´t figure out how to get a stereo song in iMovie. Any ideas on this matter???

Try this  - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)

  • Imovie through my home stereo?

I enjoy front row and it seems to work really well. I love listening to itunes through my home stereo with the use of an Airport Express. BUT... When I play a movie on imovie, or watch a slide show through iphoto the sound comes from the dinkie little computer speakers. Does anyone know how to pipe the sound through my airport express? Thanks in advance!

There isn't a way to do this from within Front Row. However there are 3rd party applications that allow you to configure your computer to do this (I can't recall their names off hand). Basically they intercept the audio and then pipe it out to whatever output you wish (in this case the Airport Express).

  • Why can't I get stereo sound recording to iMovie through audio line in?

I am recording some keyboard music from a digital keyboard (Yamaha pf85) into iMovie HD 6 on my laptop through the audio line in. I have connected Output I from the keyboard to the audio line in using a mini jack adapter. This is supposed to record the music in Mono, but it will only play back on the left side of the spectrum. There is no right side sound at all. The keyboard has twin outputs, so I have also tried connecting Outputs I and II to the laptop's line in, using a twin mini jack adapter, but the music still only plays back on the left side. What's happened to the right side?
I have transferred the movie to my desktop Mac (PowerPC G4 with OS 10.4.11) but I get the same problem.
I've tried exporting the movie to QuickTime, but still the same problem.
What am I doing wrong? How can I record/playback the sound on both sides of the spectrum?

Thanks for these suggestions, which are blinding but have not solved it.
    1) All cables OK and fully inserted.
    2) I tried recording a voice over into iMovie using a USB mic/headset and that was in mono but played back through both channels, so laptop and iMovie are OK recording with USB.
    3) I tried recording from the keyboard into iMovie and QuickTime on the laptop in three different ways through line in: first using both Outputs, then using Output I only and finally using Output II only. On all three occasions, the sound played back on the laptop through the left channel only. The keyboard itself has two inbuilt speakers and a headphone socket and both are providing mono sound through left and right channels, which suggests it's not faulty.
I then tried recording sound only from the keyboard into Quicktime on my desktop Mac, using the same cables and adapter. Left channel only.
I guess this means either the adapter is faulty or it's something to do with the way my keyboard outputs sound. I'll try your other suggestion. Or maybe I just need a hardware interface to route the separate channels. That seems excessive for what I want to achieve.
