Stereo Line-in for an iPad

Has anyone been able to find a lightning cable, breakout box, or dock that allows for stereo recording into an iPad/iPhone?  There are several stereo mics on the market that plug directly into the lightning port so I know it is possible to send the singles into the device.  I just can't find a way to insert line-level stereo inputs.

Hi,
Please use an USB sound card for recording, something similar to the following device:

  • Is there a PORTABLE wireless router that I could travel with to convert hotel LAN lines into wireless signals for my iPad?

I travel regularly to Asia and I have been trying to compile everything I need into my iPad.  Unfortunately, most of my hotels do not have wireless in the rooms just an LAN line.  Does anyone know of a router (as small as possible) that I can plug an LAN line into that will convert it to a wireless signal I can access with the iPad.  What I don’t want is to have to plug the router into a computer and program it forevery different LAN line I encounter.  Thoughts???

As the others have said, Airport Express is one option.  The catch as Allan said is that the configuration utility doesn't run on the iPad.  It is rumored that iOS5 may have the utlity, but that doesn't help you now.  If you can wait, then the Airport Express would arguably be the best for the iPad.
If you can't wait, you could get the D-Link DAP-1350.  You configure it through a webpage, similar to how you would other home routers.

  • Is it possible to have two USB drives for the IPad?  I want to bring RAW photo files from my camera, through the IPad and back to an external hard drive.  One of my cameras does not use an SD card.  How can I do this?

Is it possible to have two USB drives for the IPad?  I want to bring RAW files from my camera through the IPad and out to an external hard drive.  One of my cameras has an SD card but the other one doesn't have a card that would fit in any of the camera devices I've seen on line.  Realted to this, I bought the IPad camera accessory.  Can I put the SD card in the device and also hook the external hard drive to the USB port of the accessory and download from the camera to the hard drive?  Can I put Lightroom or the Nikon photo editing software on the IPad?  Right now I carry a PC laptop and external hard drives with me on wildernes trips.  Internet and WiFi are not available.  Because I shoot so many photos and they're in RAW I need to download from the camera to the external drive because I run out of memory on the PC (and it has much more memory than the IPad).  I have Nikon NX software and lightroom on my PC.  I'd love to be able to reduce the weight I carry by using the IPad to edit my photos each night while on trips.  Is this possible and how would I do it?  I'd appreciate any guidance.

No, the camera connection kit only supports the copying of photos and videos to the Photos app, it doesn't support copying content off the iPad. For your second camera instead of the SD reader part of the kit, does the iPad to camera cable not work with it for direct transfer to the iPad ?
For Lightroom and Nikon software again no - you can only install apps that are available in the iTunes app store on your computer and the App Store app on the iPad, 'normal' PC and Mac (OS X) software are not compatible with the iPad (iOS). There are some apps that perform fairly basic editing functions that are available in the store, but nothing as sophisticated as, for example, Lightroom.

  • What are the proper settings to encode for the iPad using compressor?

I'd like to use 1080p the specs say it is capable of.
I can get it working using hand brake but I don't see why I can't do it with compressor.

The official specs for the iPad 2 do not include the 1080p video format so your not going to find a 1080p preset in Apple's Compressor that is marked for use with any iOS device. Apple states the following in the iPad 2 specs:
"Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format"
However, the iPad 2 CAN mirror or scale up to a 1080p TV output and that's all they mean when they say:
"Video mirroring and video out support: Up to 1080p with Apple Digital AV Adapter or Apple VGA Adapter (cables sold separately)"
In any case, all of the A4/A5-based iOS devices can (unofficially) decode 1080p video but for quality results you do need the iPad 2 (the iPhone 4, 4th generation iPod touch, and the original iPad can decode some 1080p sources but you may see dropped frames or stuttering on those "lesser" devices).
As for creating 1080p content you can use whatever tools you want (just select 1920x1080 as the dimensions, use an H.264 codec, and restrict the bitrate to something between 4 to 10Mbps -- you may need to experiment with the latter to find the best results). However, you MIGHT need a third-party app to actually transfer and play that content on your iPad since iTunes MAY not allow you to directly sync that file to your iPad (because it exceeds the "official" spec).

As the King says, if your friends wifi router was relatively new, it likely has not been picked up by Apple's location based information database system and thus there is no location information associated with it.  So your iPad had no way of getting its location.
The wifi location databases are traditionally updated by wardriving - literally companies employ people to drive around sniffing out active wifi signals and associating an approximate location to it.  Some companies also have web sites to submit that information if owners wish to (Apple does not seem to have one though), and the various companies with wifi location databases buy and sell their information.  Bottom line is though, it can take weeks, months or sometimes even longer for a residential router to get picked up - depends on where you live (more rural, likely the longer time it takes).
When I moved from VA to NC it took up to 6 months for mine to reflect my new location (I checked it once the week I moved in, and then periodically thereafter, and it finally was getting it right after about 6 months) and I live in a pretty densley populated area (triangle NC).

One analog input via stereo jack on rear bracket (selectable from line-level analog line input or mono microphone analog input)

Thank you very much for your reply. This is what I was hoping not hear though...
It seems that I have no choice other that recording "mono". The problem is that the audio device I want to connect has true stereo output (the signal differs significantly between the two channels) and has no option to downmix to single-channel, which would be find by me, and now I have to manually implement it before I can fed it to my laptop.
I was considering a USB card and I even bought a Sound Blaster Play! based on a video review that explained that the sound can actually record line-in, but it can't. Models that guaranty a line-in start at 60 euro or so, and is already much higher than my budget.
Originally I was going for a "Sound Blaster Easy Record", but I cannot find it anywhere in Europe, only in some e-stores in Hong Kong and Australia, and I don't want to order from that far, because the shipping costs will double the final price.
I think I will have to settle with a combo jack splitter and only record the "left" channel.
If you have any idea on a cheap usb card that supports stereo line-in please let me know.
Also if you know a cheap way to downmix two channels into mono using only passive electronic components that would also help a lot.

  • Advice for Tiger, ipad, CS3

If this is asked already just post me a link, thanks.
I want to make sure I know my options. We got the 16GB 3G ipad without reading that you have to have Mac OS 10.5.8. I currently have 10.4.11 and have never upgraded my system because of software compatibility issues with Adobe software.
I have Adobe CS3 now. I use InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat a lot.
Back in the day I was using Quark, so when I updated to CS3 all my documents were compatible in InDesign CS3. I don't have any problems with my current setup. I still need my quark documents that are now only compatible with inDesign.
My only option, for the ipad to work is to upgrade to Leopard and upgrade to Adobe CS5. That doesn't mean my quark docs will work in the new InDesign. Plus that's a lot of money to dish out to make the ipad work. What other options are there seeing I don't really want to upgrade to Leopard. The ipad won't work on anything less, bummer. Wondering if I should just take the ipad back, if they'll let me, got from an at&t store.
It looks like I'm wayyy behind on the system (10.6.5!). My mom and sister also have Tiger and will need to upgrade soon, they won't have any problems upgrading, they just haven't backed photos up and that's holding them back.
Bottom line. Would it be cheaper to buy another mac that already has snow leopard on it? Or to buy Snow Leopard and Adobe CS5? I wouldn't have to have any Adobe professional on the new mac, maybe just a photoshop elements or something.

    Here a cheap solution:
Buy an external harddrive. Install Leopard / Snow Leopard on it. Boot off the external drive when you want to sync your iPad.
    No software compatibility problems.
Unless things have changed, the $29 Snow Leopard licensing requirements indicate that you need to own Leopard on the machine.
I recommend you do a google search on any external harddrive you are looking at.
I bought a low cost external drive enclosure. When I started having trouble with it, I did a google search and found a lot of complaints about the drive enclosure. I ended up buying a new drive enclosure. On my second go around, I decided to buy a drive enclosure with a good history of working with Macs. The chip set seems to be the key ingredient. The Oxford line of chips seems to be good. I got the Oxford 911.

  • Is there a stylus with a nib for the iPad...and an app that goes with it?

Is there a stylus available for the ipad that looks and feels like a pen? I asked the question on the highstreet the other day and was shown a stylus that was as thick as my finger!!! (I think it was made by a company called Genius?). I am used to using an IBM tablet pc which comes with a stylus that can write in quite fine lines- can this be done on the iPad? Also if the answer is yes, I'd like to know if there is an application similar to Windows journal whereby you can save notes into your own file structure? Can anyone help- surely these are basic things for a tablet pc- I don't know why the folks on the highstreet can't help confirm this??? Thank you

The iPad screen uses a different technology to the tablet PC to which you refer and any 'stylus' needs to have sufficient width and to be able to transmit an electrical current. That's why the styli for iPads are usually thick and made from a 'sponge' like material.
You could try http://www.beststylus.com/ I have one of theirs on order but haven't received it yet. The videos look encouraging, but you'll never get the thin line experience of the tablet PC. (On the other hand you couldn't really use your finger as a stylus on the tablet; different ideas about input).
On the app side you may want to look at Note Taker Hd (works quite well without a stylus) and Mental Note (this is what I'm hoping the stylus will help with).

  • Equium A100-306: Question about stereo line input recording

I want to record to my laptop and as, frustratingly, it hasn't got a stereo line input.
I have acquired a Behringer USB line adaptor (UCA202). This allows playback through my stereo system (with adjustable output level through the sound card) but input level is too high and can't be adjusted by any means I have tried.
Is there a solution to this that can be followed by an enthusiast?

Thanks for the information. I shall explore the software option as the thread you mention looks very relevant even though it relates to a different model.
If that doesn't work or proves too complex to install/configure I thought the Echo Audio Indigo IO sound card might do the trick.
It's ironic that the Equium A100-306 was sold as a multi-media laptop but doesn't have a line input.

  • "Line in" for powerbook

Im currently trying to convert my vinyl to cd using the programme Audacity. Ive attached one head of a double-headed jack lead to the headphone socket on my amp, the other to "Line in" socket on my Powerbook.
All good but Im only getting one channel coming thorough. The output from the amp is definitely stereo, so Im assuming that the problem must be with "Line in" input side, which is only taking one channel.
Is there any way of making "Line in" a stereo input?

    John coveney wrote:
I tried to use the cord you refer to to connect my powerbook to my turntable, but I did not get anything coming through to Audacity - it just flatlined. I was told this was because the signal coming directly from the turntable was too weak, so had to be amplified.
Yes, back when turntables were standard, every amplifier contains a "phono preamplifier" to bring the signal up to the RIAA standard equalization, so only the "phono" inputs worked properly for connecting a turntable. In other words, you can't just plug the turntable into an amplifier without a phono preamp. Now that most homes don't have a turntable, many amplifiers don't have a phono preamp and when it's missing, it has to be bought separately.
Using the headphone output may be frowned upon by purists, but it's fine. I've used it since on my cheap amp it's what works best for me. As long it is brought up to line level for when it goes into the computer.
I still don't have a clue as to why it's acting like mono.
    John coveney wrote:
Something labelled M above (which I take to mean mono) is set at over to left.
I believe M is for Mute, which is why it's locked at zero. If you check the M box, it mutes both channels. Naturally, if just the Channel 1 or Channel 2 checkbox is checked, that individual channel will be muted. But I think you would have noticed that.

  • Portable amplifier for the ipad?

    Hi all
I only had my ipad for couple of days and liked it so far. However, I'm disappointed with the sound quality of the ipad, the sound does not feel as alive and natural as my old itouch and the sound of different instruments seems be squished together. I also get white noise when turn the volume up to full.
I know the problems is due to ipad as the music is encoded in apple lossless format using the original CDs and I'm also using Sennheiser IE8 headphone with many hundreds of hrs of burn in.
There is also quite a difference when using the same headphones to play the same format of songs on my macbook. So I can only conclude that the DAC chip in the ipad is not as good quality as it should have been for the price.
Anyway, can anyone please recommend to me a portable amplifier for the ipad. My budget is about £200, and if possible I'd like to be able to use it with my macbook as well.
Also I would like to try it out before buying, so can anybody suggest any audio shops with a good selections of portable amps in London that can be easily reached using the tube.
    Thanks guys

Hi, just an update on the ipad sound quality to clear the air for any partial buyers reading this thread.
I now had my new gears for 3 days and have used them to test the ipad music quality extensively over the weekend.
1st up is my new portable Nuforce Icon mobile (DAC/amp) and 1 year old Sennheiser IE8 connected to the ipad using line out cable.
The Nuforce Icon mobile is retailed at $99, and for that price I’ve no higher praise as it almost make the music life like to listen, there is also no more annoying white noise in the background when turning up the volume either.
The amp does make music sound a bit bass heavy, but I think that’s the fault of the IE8 and not the amp, as the IE8 is bass heavy to begin with.
I also used it with the macbook through a USB port, again the mini makes a noticeable difference with sound quality using IE8 to play apple lossless music.
If you already have a decent pair of aftermarket headphone or if you spend lots of time listen to music on your laptop. Than I’d highly recommend the Nuforce icon mini as it’s a great piece of equipment to improve the music quality without burning a big hole in your pocket.
If you are interested, there are many reviews of the Nuforce Icon mini on the head-fi.org site, much better than any I can write.
I also did some blind tests between apple lossless and ACC 320kbps encoding on the ipad using my new Sennheiser HD800 and Graham Slee Solo SRG II headphone amp.
Even with both the headphone and amp not yet burned in, I can hear no difference between the 2 encodings using ipad onboard DAC and line out cable.
So I replace the lossless music on the ipad with the AAC 320kps version and gained 2/3 of hard drive space.
I’ve to say the DAC in the ipad is quite good, as there are not much details lost when compared to my Creative Lab soundcard in my PC.
So I was wrong to assume the ipad DAC was causing the poor sound quality. I think there is a problem with my 3.5mm headphone jack. I’ve connected both my headphones and amps to it, and there is always some white background noise at different volume setting.
