Stereo line-level analog audio input?

The analog audio input on my machine seems to be mono only. If I put in a stereo line-level signal it just duplicates the left channel on the right. Is there any way to input a stereo line-level signal through this jack?
ALFRED GUZZETTI

The input source is a DV tape deck. At the head of finished tapes I record bars and tone. The first segment of the tone is on both channels. It is followed by tone on the left channel only, then the right channel only. When I monitor what the computer is getting either through headphones or direct the input to Soundtrack Pro, where the meters display left and right, I hear and see sound on both channels from both the stereo input and the left-channel input (which shows up on both channels in the computer). The right channel only input is not audible or visible on the meter. The computer has always been this way. I assumed, maybe wrongly, that the input uses a stereo jack since these are pretty universal, but that in effect, the input is mono.

  • Mac Pro no analog audio input

The analog audio input on my Mac Pro has stopped working.  Audio output still OK; USB audio input works fine but nothing from analog audio input.
I know it's getting a signal as I can send the mixer output to a Zoom H4n and it records fine, but I need it to go directly into the computer for tutorial voiceovers.  I've tried recording in Quicktime Player, Soundtrack Pro, Camtasia and Screenflow.
I get no volume indication in the System Preferences>Sound panel.
I opened Apple Midi Setup>analog input and I can adjust volume on the two channels but "Master" is stuck at zero.  Could this be the problem?

See if a smc reset shakes it loose.
Just to be clear here.  Are you inputting into a program and expect to hear it as well? If so, then unless the program itself has some kind of audio playthru to the speakers you need a app like LineIn to handle that function.

  • Audio: Line level Analog Out

I am trying to connect a Mac Mini (intel) to a regular Samsung HD LCD TV. DVI-to-HDMI works well for the video, but in order to get the audio, I am looking to get an analog, *line-level signal out* of the mini.
Any idea of how to achieve this?
TV audio input is RCA (red/white plugs). All the cables I have at the moment, seem to pull *headphone level* from the mac mini.
Help and pointers are much appreciated. Thanks // pascal

Your experience is a little unusual, and in fact if anything it should go the other way, since the output voltage for headphones is a little above the line-level typically used for pre-amped signals for which RCA inputs are commonly used, Thus if anything, the volume from the mini via the TV should be higher than normal TV channels.
All that being said, that assumes you have the volume control on the mini turned up of course! I typically leave mine at maximum (this is set in the Sounds preference pane, though I'm sure you know that!) and thus control the overall volume via the TV.
If your mini's volume is already a max, then test the output with a pair of headphones (or iPod earpieces etc) to check the output level is actually what it should be. If it's too low, there's a problem in the mini or with MacOS, if it's normal, then there's a problem with the audio cable or the TV. In the latter regard, I'm not familiar with the specific TV you have, but you might find you need to set the correct input for the video input you are using.

  • No Analog audio input?

Been reading a lot about lack of an analog input option - lots of external devices not working.
Is this in fact true? Does anyone know how to get line level recording into the iphone from a mic or guitar then?
    Thx

My understanding is that Apple removed the audio inputs from the dock connector in order to support the new USB Camera connector. However, that makes little sense. The iPhone already had USB connectivity - that's how it connects to a computer and iTunes. And the USB interface/camera adapter only works on the iPad, not the iPhone (although I did hear that you can move pictures from the iphone to the iPad over the USB connector). I suspect the reason for this is that the iPhone's battery is too small to be able to provide adequate power to most USB devices for an acceptable length of time.
But it seems unacceptable to remove fundamental capabilities that are used by many Apple approved hardware devices and software applications without providing some alternatives, or at least some warning.
I pre-ordered an iPhone 4, willing to pay the extra $200 to get it early. And I pre-ordered the new Blue Mikey thinking it would provide better mic input as well as a separate audio input and USB input for charging while recording. But now I find out that the new mic won't work with the new phone, and there's no solution in the works. I also have a Blue Yeti USB mic, but that won't work with the iPhone either (but I hear it does work with the iPad).
Apple, what's the story here? This is a disappointing loss in functionality with no warning for those of us who paid money for hardware and software for recording and can no longer use them on the new phone.
Is there a plan? Will USB mics be supported on the iPhone? Will there possibly be a software update that supports switching the dock pins from USB to/from audio? What is the recommendation for working around this issue?

  • Analog Audio Input Issues

I've tried several different mics in my audio input port and none of them register. The display in the sound preferences doesn't show anything coming in. However, the mac does notice when I plug my mic in or take it out. There is activity on the preference pain only when plugging it in or unplugging it. Is there a problem with my mac? Is it a problem with the OS? For now I'm using my iSight for sound it but this proves to be a problem because it pics up too much sound.
Please help. I'm rarely stumped but this one got me.

  • Analog audio input?

I recently got a PM G5 DP 2GHz (7,3). Before, it was used as an office machine, it's really in a good condition. (Though I should buy a new HD for it, because it still has the factory installed one - I didn't really trust a 5 year old HD.)
*Today I wanted to use the analog input jack, but I found that the analog input is not shown at the Sound prefpane in the System preferences. So I am stuck and I can't use my analog sound input.*
Is this a hardware issue (out ports are working perfectly), or it's some easy-to-solve software issue?
*Currently running 10.5.8 with all the latest updates.*

Man, you're the saver of the day!
I feel like an idiot, I use Macs for a couple years now but I newer used this utility. (Well never owned a PowerMac before.)
I definitely owe you a beer! Thank you!

  • How do I get a good line level from the headphone jack from my latest model iMac?

My house is wired for analog sound and have for years used my iPod and iPhone to send an analog signal to my amplifier which drives speakers in multiple rooms. When I try this on my brand new iMac I get a buzz. Is there a setting or patch cable that can give line level analog audio out of my iMac?

There is no audio out any longer on the new iMacs.
Not true.   All the iMacs have audio out, including the current models:
Headphone/optical digital audio output (minijack) - this can be used for line output also
Support for Apple iPhone headset with microphone
The current models don't have an audio input.

  • Flash Media Live Encoder 3 Audio Input Level Resets (XP)

I am using Flash Media Live Encoder 3 on a Windows XP computer, with an Ospery-100 capture card for video and a generic sound card line in for audio input. It works fine, except for every time I launch the encoder or even just stop and start encoding (i.e. without closing the application), it  resets the line in audio level of my sound card to maximum--not good, as the appropriate setting is actually the minimum. If I don't remember to open the Windows mixer and turn it back down, the audio clips like crazy. No other application I use changes the input leve of my sound card in this way. What is happening here? Any ideas? Any solutions? Thanks.

Have you checked volume slider position in FMLE? If it is set at 100% it would increase the audio level of sound card. Drag slider to lower value to reduce the volume level.

One analog input via stereo jack on rear bracket (selectable from line-level analog line input or mono microphone analog input)
Digital In via 3.50 mm (/8-inch) jack on rear bracket (sharing with the Line In/Microphone In jack)Message Edited by soundguy on 2--2005 04:53 AM

Thank you very much for your reply. This is what I was hoping not hear though...
It seems that I have no choice other that recording "mono". The problem is that the audio device I want to connect has true stereo output (the signal differs significantly between the two channels) and has no option to downmix to single-channel, which would be find by me, and now I have to manually implement it before I can fed it to my laptop.
I was considering a USB card and I even bought a Sound Blaster Play! based on a video review that explained that the sound can actually record line-in, but it can't. Models that guaranty a line-in start at 60 euro or so, and is already much higher than my budget.
Originally I was going for a "Sound Blaster Easy Record", but I cannot find it anywhere in Europe, only in some e-stores in Hong Kong and Australia, and I don't want to order from that far, because the shipping costs will double the final price.
I think I will have to settle with a combo jack splitter and only record the "left" channel.
If you have any idea on a cheap usb card that supports stereo line-in please let me know.
Also if you know a cheap way to downmix two channels into mono using only passive electronic components that would also help a lot.

  • Audio Input

I have a Powermac G5. Which port is analog audio input? I can't get my microphone to work, and I want to be sure I'm plugging it into the right place.
    Thanks.

PowerMacs use a line level input. If you are not using a powered self amplifying microphone you will need a pre-amp. The audio in port has a circle with a triangle on either side pointing toward the center.

  • Optical Audio - Analog Audio Adapter?

I have been thinking for a while about buying an Apple TV.
One of the main reasons I want an Apple TV is for streaming music through the Apple TV into my stereo system WITHOUT having the TV turned on.
So this means I need to use the Optical Audio port to go straight into the stereo.
I have a Kenwood XD-551 stereo system which is reasonably old and only has Analog Audio input. That means I can't connect an Apple TV to the stereo using an optical audio cable. Is there an adapter I can buy that connects Optical Audio to Analog Audio?
I know I can stream music to the speakers through an AirPort Express (I have a 3.5mm to Analog cable), but I want an Apple TV also to stream HD Movies and TV Shows from iTunes, as well as AirPlay Mirroring from my iPod Touch.
    My current set up:
TV --- 3.5mm jack to Analog Audio Input --- Stereo
    My intended setup:
Apple TV --- HDMI --- TV
Apple TV --- Optical Audio to Analog Audio Input --- Stereo
I REALLY NEED A SOLUTION TO THIS OR ELSE I MAY NOT END UP BUYING AN APPLE TV

I am also looking for a exactly a similar setup.
streaming music through the Apple TV into my stereo system WITHOUT having the TV turned on
@alexei Ok, so this solution works with you. just to understand the setup,
you connected the apple tv's 'optical digital-audio port' to a DAC using which kind of cable ? links from amazon or other websites will be very useful.
Output from this DAC, you connected to the speaker via 3.5mm jack, correct? again a cable name (both ends) will be extreemly helpful.
With this when you airplayed music on 'apple tv' via itunes just the audio played on your speaker, correct? assuming your TV turned off during the music play.
And when you airplayed video/movies on 'apple tv' it automatically played on your TV.
Just wanted to know, you see only one airplay configured on your iphone/ipad correct ?
If this exact setup works with you..then bingo..I can go ahead buy all those stuff. If you have a different set-up with which you play music and video sepeartely using apple tv then please do share..
Your answers to these quesions will help me to decide if I need to buy Apple TV for music(which is equally important) and watching movies. And the invetsment dosent stop there..therz DAC and cables.
    Thanks!
PS: I know I can stream music to the speakers through an AirPort Express, but want to go for apple tv.

  • Analog Audio on new MacBooks?

I love what I've seen about the new MacBooks. But my primary use is to digitize analog audio and also to stream it back to my home stereo. Can anyone advise about the new MacBook's support for analog audio? Are the stereo mini-plugs (audio in & headphone out) gone?

I found the following about the new MacBooks at the Apple Store:
    Headphone port
    Headphone/optical digital audio output (minijack)
Support for Apple iPhone headset with remote and microphone
"Headphone" sounds like an analog audio output, but what about an analog audio input? If not, could anyone advise about the world of quality (but small) A/D converters that would accept analog audio for conversion (to USB?) for streaming into the new MacBook (and recording to an audio editing program)?

  • T400 audio input

Will the T400 "microphone" input function well with a "line" level and impedance input, such as the output of a preamplifier?  This signal is connected into the "line" audio input on the T30, etc. series, and is in the range of about 100 to about 800 milliVolts.
If not, where can I get documentation of the T400 microphone input circuit?

Download and run dpclat from: http://www.thesycon.de/dpclat/dpclat.exe
Post a screenshot of the results.
My T400 used to be a bit weird with sounds but nothing serious with the very early drivers. Have you tried updating using ThinkVantage System Update?

  • How record line-level stereo input on GarageBand iOS?

I'd like to record line-level stereo input sent from my Mackie mixer to GarageBand on my iPhone 4S. I tried plugging a standard 1/8" stereo cable into the headphone jack, but no luck. The GarageBand manual suggests that this is possible, and there is one (pricey) cable I've found that seems to handle this, but it claims that the audio input is mono only, suggesting that I may need a cable connection to the dock (not the headphone jack) to handle stereo.  I can't find a cable to do this, however...ideas?
    Many thanks,
    Jim

Sonoma Wire Works' "GuitarJack Model 2" iOS peripheral can help you do that. It's expensive though.

  • Audio line level input gain too high

I've had this problem since getting my macbook 3 months ago. The line level input gain seems to be set very high no matter what & it still is too high after going into system preferences/sound & adjusting the input volume all the way down. I bought a Griffin imic thinking that might help getting around the problem, but it's just as overloading with the imic as using the macbook's built-in line input. Has anyone else experienced this? Any fixes?
