Stereo miking two actors

I have 2 mics and was wondering how best to place them so as to get a realistic stereo field from recording 2, maybe 3 actors, as live. My first thought was to treat them as one big acoustic guitar and place the capsules close together and at 90 degrees.
Maybe I should put them up as if I were recording them mono, one for each voice, and cheat each one round to catch some of the other voice. Obviously I don't want phase to be a huge issue in mono though.

I just learned something.
Ok, so now you owe me one, too. Here goes:
The Little Labs plug actually allows you to dial up the phase of your strip to ANY angle you want, not just phase in or out'.
I have never really understood this. Well, 180 degrees phase is inversed polarity of the signal, obviously.
But how can I shift a signal by 33 degrees ? 33 degrees of what ? The fundamental ? Which one ? And, as it is an octave higher, wouldn't a 2nd harmonic then get shifted by, uh, 66 degrees ? And what if I have more than one fundamental going on ?
Christian
I dunno. All i know is that I have wished that I could phase something in between in and out when neither of those options sounded any good. But like auto tune in its day, and the latest melodyne where you really can tune a single note in an polyphonic recording, we thought it could be dun but they dun it.
http://www.uaudio.com/products/software/ibp/index.html
I understand your questions, and I guess a specific phase "angle" would suit a specific miking situation. You can just tune it til you like it. It totally saved me where I had too much drums in the piano mics. I dialled the phase on the piano pair til the kick suddenly got clean, which was about 100 degrees. Go figure. Maybe there's illusion and voodoo going on under the hood, but it works, so what do I care?
And I guess I had lots of fundamentals going on in the piano, as well as numerous mics on the kit, but this gadget really did clean things up.
While we continue to have unresolved audio dilemmas, there will be wizzkids somewhere working on solutions to sell us. e.g. www.airwindows.com. Show me a guy who thinks his rig is complete...
btw, speaking of which, I suppose I'd better get a matching omni and fig 8 to fully try your previous suggestion. sigh

  • Using the same object in two actors at the same time

    Hello,
I'm in doubt.  In my application, for example i have three Hardware classes - Database, DAQ1, DAQ2.
Database class has one main method (except initialization methods) - Log Measure.
DAQ1 class also has one method - Get Voltage, and DAQ2 class has one method - Get Current.
Then i define two HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) classes - Measurement1 and Measurement2.
Each of those classes have two main methods, respectively - Measure Voltage and Measure Curent. They also have some initilziation methods.
In code, i create three objects of Hardware classes - Database, DAQ1 and DAQ2 and initiaze it. For example in Database private cluster i have DB RefNum, in DAQ1&2 i have device addresses etc.
Next I initialzie Measurement1 with two hardware objects - Database and DAQ1, and in the same way - Measurement2 with Database, and DAQ2 objects.
What Measure Voltage and Measure Curent (methods of Measurement1 and Measurement1 objects) do?
Measure Voltage method call DAQ1::Get Voltage method, then Database::Log Measure.
Similarly, Measure Current method call DAQ2::Get Voltage method, then Database::Log Measure.
Till now it's clear i think. It should work properly.
But now i incorporate Actor Framework, and define Measurement1 and Measurement2 as an actors.
Now i can run Measurement1 and Measurement2 at the same time, simultaneously, but this two actors share one object - Database. So my question - what is when actors want to use Database::Log measure method at the same time and this method is time cosuming (for example large pack of data).
Is one actor waits for second to stop executing this method of one shared object? I think yes because reentrancy setting (http://zone.ni.com/reference/en-XX/help/371361J-01/lvconcepts/reentrancy/)
But what, for example if i share one Hardware object of device (ADC converter) beetwen two HAL classes (Measurement1 and Measurement2). This Hardware object has two methods, for ex. Get Voltage At channel 1, and Get Voltage At Channel 2. Both of this methods cannot by call at the same time, because in physical device i can measure only at one channel in the same time.
Let the Get Voltage At channel X meausere take 10 seconds. Now i have huge chance, that Measurement 1 actor call Get Voltage At channel 1 method, and Measurement 2 wants to call Get Voltage At channel 2, when Get Voltage At channel 1 is in process. How to inform actor to wait till second actor release device resources?
    Regards,
    Kacper

    Dear Kacper,
the way I understood, there are two separate questions in this post, namely:
I'm using a shared resource in multiple actors, and the code accessing the resource can take quite some time to execute. How can can I ensure this does not mess up the timing of one or all accessors?
I'm using a shared resource in multiple actors, and the code accessing the resource can generate errors if I try to access it from multiple places. How can I ensure synchronization between all accessors?
As for the first question, the optimal solution to separate the resource prone to timing issues in a different thread/actor. Put anything that is not strictly timed (file access, network comunication) in a separate loop. For each actor, you will get queue references to communicate with, so instead of logging the measurements in the actors where they are made, just queue them up for a different loop to process.
For the second part, the same logic still applies. Ideally, every singular resource should be handled by its own thread and nowhere else, so if anything else needs data from/to said resource, it can send a request to the dedicated thread or actor.
If, for some reason, this is not sufficient, you have to handle synchronization in some other way. There are a lot of techniques here, for example:
Create a named semaphore or lock as a part of the class. Have class functions use the semaphore before accessing the resource.
Use actor messages. Have a "resource in use" or "resource released" messages sent to all users whenever obtaining or releasing said resource.
Have a separate actor handle all resources, awarding them to threads needing them. This method also allows setting priorities between requests.
These are just a few examples, there are many other options.
Please let me know if this was helpful.
    Kind regards:

  • Stereo to two monos

I've tried to find this function but I couldn't find it. How can I split a stereo audio file on a stereo audio track into two monos so that I can route the left signal to one bus and the right to another?

Thank you very much. By the way, what does I/O buffer size in Preference>Audio do? What's the advantage/disadvantage of having it small or large?
    This is another question??
you should be open a new post... in order that other user.... anyway...
Are you talking about _"Small-Large buffer"_ so the correct thern is *"Buffer Process Range Setting"*
this is related with the multiple 32 bit floating point audio engines inside Logic...
Process buffer is connected between _Audio and Software Instrument Tracks_ and AUX/BUS Channel strip section...
Process buffer set as Small reduce the latency that occours when you use a Buss for use FX such as Space Designer...
*But Small setting increase the CPU power request.*
if you set Buffer process setting as Large the latency will be higher *but less CPU processing power will be required*
This buffer can be also helpful for reduce the CPU power on slower Machin such as G4/G5 or Macbook and iMac in soma cases.
(on the new Nehalem this must be set as Small and... should be a great advantage if in the next release this setting should be smaller... because the RAM DDR3 at 5GHZ without front buss side is very faster and requires to be reduced over than actual *Small setting*!!!!)
*The Buffer Processing setting is strictly related with PDC setting*
    and The CPU-RAM speed
When PDC is set to ALL the live recording latency will be = Buffer sample size + Buffer processing Range size...
So that is why I always suggest to avoid to use PDC set to ALL when recording/tracking
+Anyway your additional question is OUT Thread... a new post should be opened.+

  • Help making stereo track two mono tracks

I imported a stereo aiff with dj cuts on the left side and the music in the right side. I copy/converted the file and when saving as a wav I selected interleaved to split and added to the bin. I then had a L and R version. Both files play a mono version of left and right together. I drag the L into arrange and it has a little stereo symbol on it and plays both sides only in mono.. I also tried saving the audio as a split file and the same thing happened. I remember in 7 I did it really simply with a couple clicks. Going crazy with this simple task. What am I overlooking?
    thanks

Yes, there is a clever way of doing this but I can't bring it to mind at the mo.
However, a slightly less clever but still quick way is as follow:
Make the Output channel mono (right hand of the two channel mixers in the channel strip area)
Pan your music track hard left and bounce
Pan your music track hard right and bounce
This uses the fact that the pan knob on a stereo is a balance control, not a panning control.

  • Split Stereo to Two Mono Tracks - Need Help

We're having trouble with STP working with two non-stereo tracks.
We have footage that we're editing in Final Cut Pro that was captured with two separate mics providing the audio. (A wireless lav and a shotgun.) The sequence is set up with two mono tracks.
When sending the project to SoundTrack Pro, it's opened up as a pair of stereo tracks. We cannot find a way to edit just one of the tracks without it affecting both at the same time.
How can we separate the tracks so they can be tweaked individually and then sent back to Final Cut Pro?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

...and when doing that, make sure when you export, you don't fall over one of the many bugs in STP:
You will probably find that the clip with the right channel selected actually plays the left channel after being exported (sound fine on the timeline - problem only on the exported file).
    The solution is to
    1) duplicate the stereo file and place on new track (as suggested)
    2) select left channel on first clip (control/right click the file)
    3) select second clip and swap the L and R channels around (Process-> swap channels)
    4) select left channel on first clip (control/right click the file)
    Oh the joys of STP!

  • Stereo from two mics into mono

i recorderd from 2 mics through apogee duet into garage band.
the signal from one mic is in the left speaker, the signal from the the second mic in the right speaker. how do i cancel (or diminish) this effect, better said how do i make it sound not so much divided, less stereo?

    Hey,
the problem i am having is that i am trying to have both mics being used to record at the same time. both are plugged into the AudioBuddy pre-amp, which is plugged into the fast track interface, which is connected to the computer. in logic, i have two different audio tracks opened, one with input one, and the other with input two, but i can only get pick-up from one mic. suggestions?
    thanks
Are you getting signal at the Audio Buddy (green leds both light up)?
On the Fast Track interface, I see only ONE mic input and ONE 1/4" input. In their website, I see that it is a SWITCHABLE INPUT.
    http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrackUSB.html
    " switchable instrument/line input (1/4”) "
This means you can only record ONE input at a time, not both at the same time.
You will need a larger interface in order to record two or more signals at once.

  • Soundtrack pro can't export stereo tracks

Ok. I have a problem. I'm recording some stereo cassettes into logic, then cleaning them up in Soundtrack. the editing flow is very usable. now, when I want to save, I have very limited options. Why can't I save as mp3/m4a/etc?? I see that export is what I need. Oh whoops, you can't export from a stereo track. Why?!!!?? Ok, so how do you convert a stereo track to multitrack to export? I could pretty much move completely over from Audition if I could figure this out. Help? I can't be the only one editing stereo masters in STP?

ok, how can I import stereo into two mono tracks? can files be moved from edit mode stereo into multitrack?

  • Reducing volume of actor in the background

Over the weekend I filmed a sketch with two actors. The recording was done with two lav mics; one a Rode and one a cheapo one. The actors were sat fairly close to eachother and the cheapo mic has picked up the other actor's voice a bit too much, causing reverb when I put the two tracks together (which are definitely in sync).
How can I reduce the other actor's volume in the track from the cheapo mic without much affecting the volume of the actor that it's supposed to be recording? I have Audacity and Adobe Audition.
Note: Fading the track in and out might not be an option as it carries a fair bit of other background noise, which would make the fades distracting.

Lol!  He means atmos as in "atmosphere".  I'm going to steal that typo though and start calling all atmos "atoms".
Typing aside though, the advice is spot on.  Only have one mic at a time turned up and cover the transitions with a loop of ATMOSPHERE.
    Or ATOMSphere!

  • ITunes seems to be broken, only get stereo sound

    Hey all,
I use Windows XP Pro with the latest iTunes version and for several iterations of iTunes now, it only play in stereo mode (two speakers) and will not take advantage of the true capabilities of my PCI sound card, a Creative Audigy Gamer.
In Windows I can set the sound card to play in 'Quadraphonic Speakers' mode and I can play CDs with Windows Media Player and get the full effect I should get. I fire up iTunes and it only plays through the two 'front' speakers and absolutely refuses to play as it should with all four speakers going. It used to work a few iterations ago, but an iTunes+Quicktime update sometime past seems to have broken it!!
I have completely removed the Audigy drivers and the card, then re-installed all of it, because I know that the favorite response from folks is to do this first, so please don't tell me to do it again as I won't...unless you have some additional, deeper suggestions that might do it, of course!!
Personally, I think iTunes is broken, but I have no proof. Anyone else having this issue or knowof a fix?
    TIA,
    Just Me Here

Try right-clicking or Control-cicking the iTunes application and selecting "show package contents".
Check in Contents -> Resources Disabled to see if your remaining language files are there. If they are, drag them to Contents -> Resources. Close the Contents window and try launching iTunes again.

  • Audio - mono/stereo

    Pretty new to FinalCut.

Sounds like one audio track ?
Any track in FCE will be mono in effect, to have stereo you require a Stereo Pair, two separate tracks working as one.
You will notice small green inward facing triangles in a stereo pair edited to the timeline.
Use Modify>Stereo Pair to create a stereo pair or make them separate.
If you require one track to be heard on both speakers: open the audio into the Viewer and move the Pan control slider to centre it or type 0 into the Pan field.

  • True stereo does it Work with Java3D?

    Hi,
I'm doing some research in the 3D field, looking in to Java 3D now.
Is it possible to output Java 3D to two different displays at the same time for true 3D Stereo? ie, setting the display variable on a unix machine?
    Many Thanks

Little late reply, but perhaps u'll still need it. There is a way to connect two Canvas3D to two different Screen3D if you got two graphic devices. It's discuessed here:

  • FCPX ignores audio mono/stereo

    Here's a new problem! (sigh)
Working on a show with several multi cam clips, all are specified dual mono (parent clips, multi cam clips in the bin, clips on the timeline, etc all dual mono) but my final export ("Master File" preset) is obviously stereo. On the timeline FCPX occasionally plays back in stereo (I can see it in the meters) but the problem seems to be corrected when I "expand audio components" and then collapse them... But the fix doesn't stay fixed for long.
Any Idea what could be going on??

  • Stereo Out -mono/stereo - Input 1/2-

I've got a couple of projects open and just need some advice on something that I've just noticed.
On the channel strip it has.
    Input 1
    Stereo Out
    Two independent columns
    Mono circle
Okay, I thought that because the the mono circle is there, there would be one single fader gauge/column?
When I press the circle to get to get the double circle stereo, the gauge itself doesn't change, but stays the same. What changes is the Input 1 to Input 1 -2. I would have thought the gauge would change in accordance with whether it be mono or stereo? Or does the Input change from 1 to 1 -2, represent this?
    Likewise, on another channel strip
    Input 1-2
    Stereo Out
    Single column
    Stereo double circle
When I click the double circles the gauge just stays as it is (single column) whether it be mono or stereo circles. the input changes from Input 1 (mono) to Input 1-2 (stereo).
I think I'm just confused by this.
Any help would be great help.

No, only if the strip also has a mono output.

No, it has to do with the complete signal flow. Mono in>mono out: single gauge. anything in, stereo out: double gauge.
    Likewise, on another channel strip
    Input 1-2
    Stereo Out
    Single column

That is because it is confusing. It would be Logical and Reasonable if the gauge doubled up in that scenario. The channel strip has no inserts on it?
Any help would be great help.
I am not sure if this is any help and therefore great help. I'll check out what I just said (I am not completely sure) in L9 later.

  • Is there any way to record a stereo signal on to a single track?

In other words, I would like to be able to record a stereo single track (without multi tracking) such as a guitar ran through a stereo effects pedal, or two microphones through a mixer panned extreme left & right.  Any way to do this with Garageband on one track?  I've tried two separate interfaces, a Apogee Jam and a Sonoma Wireworks via the 30-pin connector and it plays back in mono.  Just wondering if there's an app that would facilitate stereo on one track?

By definition a single track is monophonic. Stereo requires two tracks and two channels.
If you have recorded a single  track of electric guitar, you could route that to a stereo effect and you would  have a stereo sound but it would still require two channels for playback.

  • Unable to message another actor (can message self)

    Hi all
This is also posted at https://decibel.ni.com/content/thread/17117. But since personally wasn't aware of the Actor Framework community I thought I'd post it here as well. My appologies if it is not acceptable.
I'm in the process of learning the Actor Framework and after studying the "Evaporative Cooler"-example I've gone ahead and tried to make a test/example my self. I am however unable to send messages to other actors. I can send messages from a given actor to the same actor. Below is the headlines of what I'm doing and the problem:
I have to actors: actor A and actor B. Both actors have task which only purpose is to launch a one button dialog with a message - actor A's method is called Task A.vi and actor B's method is called Task B.vi. Messages for these tasks have been created using the Actor Framework Message Maker and I've changed nothing compared to what the message maker made.
The purpose of my test/example is to have actor B be able to invoke Task A.vi (and get a dialog saying "Task A: <included message>") and invoke Task B.vi (getting a dialog saying "Task B: <included message>"). To do this actor B needs the message enqueuer of actor A.
To handle this "sharing" of actor A's enqueuer Actor B has as it's private data a Message Enqueuer. After launching the two actors in my main.vi I use an method of Actor B called Bundle A Message Enquere To Self.vi. This method simply takes an message enquere as input and bundles it by name into actor B ('s private data). This is an exact copy (as far as I can tell, but I could be mistaken since something is not working) of what is done in the "Evaporative Cooler"-example.
Actor B overwrites it's Actor Core.vi. This overriding vi calls it's parent method and presents two buttons ([Send to self] and [Send to A]) for triggering the sending of Task B to B itself or Task A to actor A. When sending to B itself ("Send Task B.vi") I use B's own message enqueuer - obtaining it by calling Read Self Enqueuer.vi. When sending to actor A ("Send Task A.vi") I unbundle B's private data called "A Message Enqueuer", which is (or should be) A's message enqueuer, and use that for seding "Send Task A.vi".
However the only thing that works is seding messages to B itself. If I press [Send to self] I get a nice popup with the message "Task B: <included message>". If I press [Send to A] nothing happens. I've tried to put int some dialogs in Do.vi of both Task B and Task A (saying "Hello from Task A do.vi" and "Hello from Task B do.vi") and only the dialog of Task B gets shown. So it's like Do.vi of Task A never gets executed.
Please find attached screenshots of all VIs and the VIs themselves. To run the project simply run main.vi it launches Actor B's actor core front panel which is the gui to send messages from. To stop it again press [Stop] on main.vi's frontpanel.
Thank you for reading through and hopefully helping me.
