Stereo or 2 channel recording

How do you record stereo on Soundtrack if you can't record more than one track at once? Or recording 2 tracks from another recorder?
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

I am having problems with Soundtrack Pro getting my vinyl records to record onto the computer. I've got the video interface but there is no sound whatsoever when I play an LP. What can I do?

  • Windows 7 switches from Stereo to mono upon record start ?

I'm beginning to regret Selecting Windows 7 (64bit) OS for my new Laptop (HPdv6) (IDTonboard sound for now)
intended in large part for audio recording -- ignoring what I had read about audio problems in this OS optomistically hoping the would be fixed already. XP had always performed well for me. Here is my current problem which I've really been fighting for weeks in a Trial Copy of the current Audition without success.
Although I do have Ausio driver -- the built in Audition driver seems to work best , and I get everything ready to go selecting stereo 44100 16bit file to avoid confusing the many issues I've been having, press f10 to Double check in the edit window that I am actually getting differentiated separate stereo tracks --- then press record button --- and thats it -- from there on out two identical tracks that might as well be mono.
Again and again -- I have no idea why -- and with all of the problems I've had with windows 7 I don't really blame Audition --- but I would sure like to figure out how to fix the problem. I've all ready read Microsoft forums and there solution is to blame any third party software for problems that are very obviously within Windows 7 - so I'm not optomistic about looking for help in that direction (grin!)
    thank you

So in the Edit View Hardware setup, what input setting do you have as a default? If it says something like [01M] then that's what you will record - mono on both channels. What you need is to select a default that says [01S], if that isn't what you already have. If it is - well, then I'm not sure what's happening at all, because for reasons that you've already alluded to, I'm using XP - simply because I'm a pessimist, and we get all the nice surprises if something actually does work...
Optimists are only ever going to get disappointed by the real world, I'm afraid.

  • How to capture 2 stereo tracks (4 channels) in Premiere CS6? Thanks!

Problem capturing 2 stereo tracks (4 channels) into Premiere CS6 (on a Mac) from a Canon xls1? Thanks, IndigoJim!

I'm sure I used to get all 4 tracks from my XL1s, If I rememder correctly there was one Avi with a stereo track and a separate wav with the other pair. When in 4 track mode the audio is only 12 bit. The computer I used back then had a Matrox RT100 board, It might have been a Matrox utility that I used for the capture.

  • Multi channel record in STP v3

has any done any multi channel recording in STP3. what were your results.

If you don't want to automate the Auxes use Kontakt's automation parameters instead. Click on the Autotab in Kontakt and drag a parameter e.g. #001 to any knob in Kontakt (like e.g. the volume Master fader of an instrument). Then automate that paramter in Logic. This way you only need the Midi track in the Arrnage and not the Aux. Most Instruments fro the Kontakt library have many automation parameters already assigne, they are displayed in the Autotab.

  • Why does compressor settings of aac audio, stereo, create 2 channel mono from 2 discrete audio channel movies?

Why does compressor settings of aac audio, stereo, create 2 channel mono from 2 discrete audio channel movies?

well depending on how your audio is brought into your system you can select it as two streams of mono or a stereo pair. In reality, unless it's mixed in stereo, that's just two streams of mono locked together. Other streams brought in via other means, can have a lot more audio channels, e.g. 8, 16, 24.
In your case, with what you're doing, two separate channels works best, so you can control the levels of two very different audio sources. If, for instance, you were taking the feed from the mixing board during a concert, you might want their stereo out. Otherwise you might be dealing with the 1.2 zillion channels that they're mixing live.
I like separating the tracks coming in. I work with people who prefer to lock them together. Locking means the tracks move together during editing. Ok, fine, but I'm usually dealing with different audio sources, like you are: a camera mic (safety on location) and a close mic (shotgun, lav). Or I have a shotgun source and a lav. I want to determine the best source audio for the shot. Sometimes it's a lav, sometimes a different feed from somewhere else, sometimes the shotgun, and sometimes a mix of two sources. But if they're locked together and pre-set to come out evenly from both speakers there no way for me to make a determination. The other guys like to cut and figure out the audio later.

  • Guitar Rig plays in stereo, but will only record in mono.

Hi, I hope this is something simple. Here is my dilemma:
I open Guitar Rig and am using a preset where there are multiple amps and effects panned to the left and right channels. I hear it in stereo fine when playing and even when recording, I can physically see it recording in stereo. However when I hit stop, all the data on the bottom channel disappears, and I only get one channel. I have the track monitor ON and set to Stereo 1/2 (Presonus Firebox (1848)).
I'm obviously doing something wrong here. Can anyone put their finger on what it is I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance!
    Ray

"What usually would happen is that your mono guitar would be recorded to a mono track and you would use a stereo effect. Even though you're imputing a mono signal it is being sent to a stereo out."
Thats kind of what's happening here. Guitar Rig 4 is what is creating the stereo affect of one amp in the left and a different amp in the right. I can hear them fine when I'm playing, but when I hit record, I see it recording in stereo (an upper and lower group of sound waves) but when i hit Stop, the bottom group disappears, and Im left with only one amp sound and no stereo. I guess the problem might be with Guitar Rig 4 and not GB.

  • Capturing 4 channel recording (12 bit setero 1,2 mix) into FCP4

Having recorded from the on board mic and radio mic as a 12 bit 4 channel mix on my Canon XL1s, I cannot capture the audio mix. FCP only captures the stereo 1 (on board mic) and not the mix. It recorded well on the camera and I heard the mix on the review of the tape, but I'm struggling to get the mix on FCP (i.e. all four channels).
I've invested £500 in radio mics and the adapter which all work well. Come on you FCP buffs! Other forums have yet to produce the goods. Many thanks in anticipation.

I don't know the audio setup of your camera, but if you take it as a straight audio term, a 12 bit 4 channel mix means you recorded one 12 bit audio track that consists of a mix of the 4 inputs on the camera.
I would hope that's not what it really means.
That being said, you can't capture all 4 at once. You have to capture in pairs. Capture your video with channels 1 & 2, then create a new clip with the same in & out points, make it audio only, and change the audio settings in FCP (and maybe your camera, too) to 3 & 4 and capture that clip.
Now put them on the timeline together and link them using Modify>Link.

  • Turn mono into stereo?  Duplicate channels?

I'm importing some old 8mm tapes and they come in with mono audio in only the left channel. I'd like to duplicate that audio onto the right channel, which I know can be done in PrePro but I can't find how to do it in Elements.
Is it possible? Any work-arounds to make it happen?

One thing that I probably should add, when creating 2-channel Audio, from a 1-channel Mono source is that a bit of spatial expansion can benefit the end Audio too. This can most easily be accomplished by using Duplicated 1-channel Mono sources, and then Panning one of those with a bias to the Left, and the other to the Right. This wil still not be true 2-channel Stereo, BUT it will "expand" the aural "stage" to the Left and to the Right, and even help create the "Phantom Center," that will exist in many true Stereo Streams.
Audio engineers, such as Bob Carver (Phase Linear and Carver Audio) have spent years researching ways to expand the aural stage, to create the most realistic listening experience possible, and mainly from Stereo sources. In Carver's case, it was "Sonic Holography," which is still stunning today, even though we now commonly have 5.1 and 7.1 Audio in our home theaters. Though a 1-channel Mono Stream can never be true Stereo (or above), it can sound very good, with but a bit of work.
Audio engineers can create a good facsimile  of a 5.1, or 7.1 recording, even when the original recordings were not done with 5, or 7 mics, as discrete Mono Streams. The faux-SS (Surround Sound), is accomplished with some Duplication of Audio Streams, a bit of Panning (balance), and Fading (here, biasing front to rear), then the application of a bit of Reverb and Delay. It just takes some tweaking, and some critical listening.

  • Only left channel records - help please

Here's my set up. I have DVR with a bunch of movies. I am taking S video out and RCA audio out to a Sony DCR TRV 120 camcorder. This camera can act as a DV bridge. I am going out from the Sony via FW into my PB and trying to capture the movie in iMovie 5.0.2.
Everything is working except that I am only getting audio from the left speaker on the computer. I checked the computer in iTunes and sound comes from both speakers. I checked the camera with headphones and there is sound coming into the camera in stereo.
So, it must either be that I am losing the right channel via FW or the DV bridge in the camera.
I have imported many movies from Hi8 tape without a problem. Is there anything I am missing here? Should try to go from the camera's headphone out to the audio in on the PB? Could it be a faulty FW cable?
Is this a problem with iMoive 5.x? I have read this forum all night long and not found anyone else with the problem.
    I appreciate all replies.

"..I checked the computer in iTunes and sound comes from both speakers.."
So the computer's audio is OK.
"..I checked the camera with headphones and there is sound coming into the camera in stereo.."
No: probably not real stereo; it may be the same mono audio coming out of both channels (left & right), giving you the same mono audio in both sides of the headphones. The camcorder may be trying to 'do you a favour' ..and, because it's receiving only mono, it's helpfully(?) playing the one incoming channel out of both headset channels.
"..So, it must either be that I am losing the right channel via FW or the DV bridge in the camera.."
No: FireWire is just a digital link which carries exactly what it's being fed - you can't lose a right channel via FireWire: it passes on exactly what it receives ..like handing on a cake to someone: the person who receives it from you wouldn't receive it with half the raisins or the self-raising flour or the egg missing ..it's all handed on complete.
"..the DV bridge in the camera.." Well, as I said; I think you'll find that the camera is receiving only through its left channel, but is providing that left-channel audio out of both sides (..left & right..) of your 'phones.
So the problem is probably at the very source: your "..DVR with a bunch of movies". Either the movies are recorded in mono, and that's leaving your DVR through only the left channel, or - even if the movies really are stereo - only the left-channel is active (..is connected properly, or has sound going through it..) from your DVR to the Sony camcorder.
One way to fix this is to take the output from the left-channel of the DVR, and feed that to both the L & R cables which go to your camcorder. Use a 'splitter/joiner' like this..
..so you'd connect the left audio channel out of the DVR (..should be a white RCA/phono plug..) to the single pin of this adaptor, and then connect the pair of RCA/phono sockets on the back of the adaptor to both the left and the right audio inputs of the camcorder ..you may be using a 3.5mm jack plug to connect the phono plugs into the camcorder's input.
This kind of little mono to both channels adaptor is available by mail order from most electronics stores, e.g: here, and the simplest place to find one in the States is probably Radio Shack, or that kind of store.
    It's a common problem..

  • Setting Stereo Mix to default recording device on Windows 8 HP Envy Ultrabook Kills Speakers

When I try setting Stero Mix to be my default recording device, the audio playback always cuts off after about 5-10 seconds or so. When it cuts off it doesn't sound good - it sounds like my speakers fry themselves to a quick and painful death if you can imagine that sound (ok, maybe i'm exagerrating).
Sometimes I have to reboot in order to hear any audio again on this ultrabook. Other times the audio will come back on its own after some time (it may always comes back over time, but most times i'm impatient so I reboot).
Is anyone else with my config able to set Stereo Mix to be the default recordgin and still retain a workable playback device? Anything else I can try?
I have the HP Envy Ultrabook laptop with Windows 8 Pro 64 bit.
    Thanks,

I have since discovered stereo mix works when the laptop is plugged in. If it's unplugged it still will not work even though the setting "continue using while on battery power" is checked in the properties. If this is by-design I suppose I can live with this.

  • Recommended lowest Mac Specifications for 32-Channel Recording.

I've been looking a lot into using Logic for Multi-Track recording our bands in a Live setting.
I mix on a Yamaha M7CL and just purchased two MY16-AT Expansion cards that each give us 16 Channels of Digital Direct Out output, 32 Channels output in total. To go with that, I picked up a Presonus Firestudio Lightpipe 32-Channel Interface. For the time being, I only have Logic Express 8 so I will be using that on my Macbook Pro recording 16 Channels.
My question is, what is recommended for best performance on a desktop machine when recording 32 Channels once I upgrade to Logic Studio? I'm shooting to get a new iMac, but want to be sure that I am getting a machine that wont struggle too much when I'm editing the tracks. For example, the 20" (Current Generation) iMac, 2.66ghz and 4gb ram. I'm curious how that would handle it, especially on a bit of a budget.
Any ideas or suggestions are helpful, thanks.

I've never used my Mac to record live, but I have had more than 66 mono tracks running at once in LE7 on my Macbook from an external drive without a hitch. For 32 tracks the specs you listed should be plenty of machine to handle it, IMO.

  • Mixing audio as stereo onto both channels...

Hi guys, I think this might seem like a real amateur question but I've struggled with this for a while now! Thought I better just hang my head and ask!...
I recently filmed a therapy session with one clip mic on each person; I set the camera so it put each clip mic onto each separate mono channel, so I could test them individually, then I planned to mix them as stereo in the edit.
After a few tries, I've nested the audio as once sequence and mixed it but still when I export and play back the final .mov the audio comes separately through each speaker.
Can someone educate me please? Be much obliged!
    Alex

I've nested the audio as once sequence and mixed it but still when I export and play back the final .mov the audio comes separately through each speaker.
Mixed it how? And what do you mean; "the audio comes separately through each speaker" ? Does that mean BOTH speakers? How did you pan the clips on A1 and A2? If both are panned to 0, then both track's audio will output to both output channels (left + right), otherwise known as mono.
If you want to make them stereo, pan each track's clips differently. For example, if you pan the clips on A1 to -1, they will only output to the left output channel. I'd recommend panning the clips on A1 to -.75 and the clips on track A2 to .75.

  • Importing tape with 2 audio channels recorded?

Can iMovie 4 handle importing a mini DV tape that has 2 channels of audio. Can these 2 channels of audio be separated for editing??

That depends on what you mean. iMovie imports in stereo (which is two channels), but those can't be separated.
If you mean the extra audio channels that can be added using 12-bit audio in the camera, the answer is NO.
    NEVER use 12-bit audio:

I have a "conexant high definition audio smart221" and in the menu to notch: "to post the decontaminated peripherals" but nothing... :(

Hmm maybe you should update the sound driver too
As I said in my first posting, I could enable the stereo mix on my Satellite. But there is one difference to the P300-16N; my notebook supports Realtek sound chip, your notebook supports Conexant CX20561 sound chip
Maybe this is the reasons why the stereo mix is not available.
