Steve Jobs and his magical powers!

I have found two things I can't do in iWeb but Steve Jobs can...
1) When I drag a photo album onto the page iWeb asks if i want to place all the photos in that album. If you click 'no' it doesnt do anything, if you click 'yes' it sprays your site with all the pics in that album.
When Steve did it in the macworld webcast the album turned into a button (without an alert) which when activated starts a slideshow of all the pics in that album.
Why doesnt mine do that?
2) When I 'manually' create a slideshow and go to view it, instead of the slick looking black background with reflections etc that Steve Jobs gets, I get a crappy 'Quicktime 5' lookalike window thats about as appealing as treating sunburn with a dose of sandblasting. Whats going on?

The behaviour you describe doesn't apply when you drag to a Photo page, which is probably what Steve was demonstrating. These have a Start Slideshow button already on the page. When you drag your photo album to the placeholder area your images are laid out in a grid of thumbnails and you can edit the captions and change the style of the thumbnail frames.
As said by the other poster, you only get the black background and reflection and transparent controls when you publish to .Mac, but there are options available for overriding the HomePage-style slideshow which iWeb defaults to when published to a local folder, as explained in this topic:

  • How did Steve Jobs project his iPad onto the big screen?

Steve did it. Why can't we? I understand that Apple's Component AV cable will only play video files on my TV from my iPad, but I would like to demonstrate all the iPad's features to an audience like Jobs did. Any clues, anybody? Thanks.

Mr. Holton is correct: Steve Jobs has specially modified units when he does a presentation on an iPhone or iPad. At this time the only way to project the iPad's interface and most applications would be to use something like a document camera.

  • Screw steve jobs and apple

this is a bunch of crap. anyone who bought an iphone should get the 100 dollar rebate. Steve can save his crap explanation for someone who believes it. and i also don't think it should matter where you bought the iphone. either way apple got the money for the iphone. i'm done with apple and this is the last purchase I make from them.

Yeah, because your alternative (MS) is such the model corporate citizen. Apple has not "screwed" you. Apple hyped the product, and got the media all involved. In turn, you probably got all hot and bothered over the "NEED" to get this brand spanking new product, and you forked over your money. Thereafter, Apple dropped the price. Why? Who knows..sales may not have been so good...Apple may have decided to try and broaden their customer base by reducing the price. Whatever.
I too forked over my money on June 29th after sitting in line. I'm the idiot for sitting in line, but do I regret it? No. It was a nice break from work and I have a stellar product, which you couldn't pry from my cold, dead hands. This move (price drop and expansion of customer base) will benefit the consumer of the iPhone in the long run (the reason why is too long to explain here). If you can't afford to be an early adopter, then wait. Get some impulse control.
Nonetheless, since you have decided to "quit" Apple forever, then goodbye. You'll be back. And, what's worse, you know it.

  • Thank You Steve Jobs and Apple, Inc.

Just want these forums to now be flooded with praise for Apple's decision. It's not $200, but I never expected that. After all, we stood in line knowing that price drops would come, although we never expected such a drastic drop. A $100 gift card is a nice resolution to this situation, and my faith in Apple has been restored. I've already called customer service, of who I was on the line complaining to for most of the day, and filed a 'compliment' to thank Apple for addressing this issue and listening to their loyal fanbase. Please do the same. Cheers ~

Why should you feel robbed?? You made the mistake of not spending a 100 more for twice the storage space! There is nothing wrong your phone, you made the decision at the counter to save yourself some dough and these are the repercussions . I believe that this by far the best pr contol that i've seen in a long time. The only unfortunate incident that i see is that now all you crybabies are going to expect apple to compensate you for every price drop in the future, causing them lose even more money. Why do you feel robbed? Are you going to expect a price difference when apple inevitably updates your laptops (probably the least expensive macbooks at that)?? If you do than you should not be a consumer of any sort.

  • Steve Jobs comments on flash

Steve Jobs said flash is buggy (under Mac) and it explains why many Mac devices doesn't support flash. As to AIR applications, I do feel the performance and stability under Mac is worse than Windows. As a developer, I wish AIR apps can reach as many devices as possible (including iPhone and iPad). Does the AIR team have a rough estimation when this could happen?

Screw HTML5 - how much longer are we going to be playing with this legacy 90's garbage?
Every new piece of crap 'Internet technology' that comes out claims it'll save the world, fix all the problems, make everything WORK.  Sounds like the usual bull.  Why are we still playing with JavaScript and DHTML in 2010??  Where is this next generation Internet we've been promised?  All I see is more hackish solutions built on top of already hackish foundations.
The only way to ditch this legacy rubbish is to move towards VM-based platforms.  It's already happening in the hardware world.  Flash/Flex and Silverlight are the Internet-RIA equivalent of the same trend.  Stop trying to salvage technology conceived decades ago.  What a waste of money and time!
I'd rather see Adobe team up with someone like Microsoft to engineer a next generation browser platform than play nice with Steve Jobs and his kool aid drinking customer base (who seem to be tasting poison more and more lately).  Stop trying to build applications within technology that was designed to display static text, and start building applications on technology designed to run applications.

  • Where's Steve Jobs when I need him?

Isn't it odd / ironic that the very issue that the early Steve Jobs hung his reputation on -- i.e. fan noise in the the original Mac -- should make such a noted come-back now?!? Although there are no less than 3 fans in my Mac Pro, plus one small one on each video card... mostly, mostly the 5 assorted fans have operated the last 2+ years quiet as a church mouse.
But why does the Mac Pro (my early 2009, in this case) suddently decide to run one of the fans at HIGH speed constantly? And more importantly what can I do about it?
About a year ago, the machine took on this behaviour and I reset the SMC under guidance from this discussion group. The fan problem was resolved.
Repeating the SMC-reset process now results in a temporary cessation of the high-speed fan behaviour, but within 5-10 minutes after re-booting the fan noise resumes. Once begun, the fan runs at high speed exclusively and constantly.
Anybody out there know how to resolve this? Someone channelling my man Steve? You KNOW how we HATE that constant droning sound!!
    Thanks in advance.

Are you referring to the Dock?
If it is the Dock that is bothering you, type: command, option, D (all three keys together). That will bring the Dock on the screen permanently.
I do not know how to remove it permanently.

  • Steve Jobs

    Hi All,
I know that this may not be the right place to talk about the passing of Steve Jobs, but i wanted to express my condolences to his family, friends and co-workers.  He was a genius in his own right!
I have to admit, i never really liked Apple products until i purchased the iPhone 4 last year and then followed by the iPad 1 3G and love the gadgets like anything, to be honest, it is as if they are glued to my hand!!
So, what are your thoughts and experiences with Steve Jobs and Apple products?
    God bless Steve x
    CG Over An Out

    Hi CG,
On a personal note I'd have to agree with you. A true icon of the 21st century.

  • The Mac App Store - changing the philosophy of Steve Jobs

I've just finished Steve Jobs autobiography. I started thinking about Steve Jobs and the intentional philosophy of making sure the hardware worked well with the software to make a "few core products." The MAC App store is a sellout moving away from this truth. Perhaps Apple one day will realize that moving away from "the top five products" to supporting zillions of software apps is a huge error. It is a sellout to make more and more profits. While this may work in the short-term, I would much rather see Apple focus on a few good third-party software products. Perhaps something like a brand certification such as "Apple certified software" to be only awarded to the very best in the App store. It may be a good idea to have an SDK that is required to meet this very high standard. While I know Apple does filter the titles in their app store, it does not offer the true legacy of what Steve Jobs stood for, making the software and hardware work as team to make "great products." "People at Apple were charged to make great products and not great profits," sometimes surprising the public with what they didn't realize they needed. The App store is not built to support the high standard that is Apple. I hope this will change one day.

Good catch! Yes there was a time when many companies and other organizations did that sort of thing. Now not so much.
Intel still sponsors clubs see http://www.computerclubhouse.org.
You might also check around, there might be after school programs, sometimes the YMCA or Boys & Girls Clubs have programs.

  • Color Picture of Steve Jobs that I would like to send to Apple for use in his honor. I prefer Color

I would like to send Apple a Color Picture of Steve Jobs that I found on Google. it's the same picture Steve Jobs Biography that
Walter Isaacson wrote. except it's in color. What I did was use my Drawing Pad Program to bring in the picture and then I brought in a splash I croped with Steve Jobs 1955-2011 and saved it. I want you all at Apple to have a copy to use for his memormial eash year. And Thank you Tim Cook and everyone at Apple for honoring Steve's values in keeping Apple products the great products that they are and will remain. Siri is such a riot. I have so much with her. I was able to use Best Buy's Trade-in Program and I traded my iPad 2 in for the new iPad 3rd Generation. I am one that needs Siri to help me spell some words when I get brain lock. lol. .  She is also fun to play with. I asked her to tell me a joke, she came back with, " Two iPhones walk in a bar, I forget the rest. LOL. you all have an ad with this joke. I haven't asked her any questions on sports yet. I like figure skating in the winter olympics beacause it's so graceful.
    Very Sincerely,

  • A major black eye for Apple and Steve Jobs - an update on activation issues

I am at 30 hours and still waiting for activation!
I have spent over 7 hours on the phone between yesterday and today trying to get my phone activated. I have been talking to AT&T and Apple and I have wasted my day on hold. No one seems to know what the issue is and everyone keeps telling my they are sorry. I am a current AT&T customer and they deactivated my old phone immediately.
I was on the phone with Apple earlier today for over an hour and the rep had to work with AT&T and still could not correct my activation. She "promised" to call back before 7pm PDT to see if my issue was resolved and I should have known better since of course no call was received. I really was not expecting the call but it should never have been offered.
Throughout my numerous calls I was informed that this was becoming a major issue for AT&T and Apple as the day was progressing and that they had numerous people working on the problem.
Where has Apple and AT&t been in all this? Steve Jobs has been promoting the heck out of his product and now he is no where to be found. No statements addressing the issues on either of their web sites. During my last conversation with AT&T, the rep informed me that at 10:36 CDT she received an update from Apple saying that they are trying to resolve the issues and that it may take 24-48 more hours to resolve. The AT&T rep also informed me that they it AT&T was informed by Apple that the issues with activation are coming from the Apple side.
I know that this is a new product and glitches will happen. But Apple created the hype and they should have been prepared.
In the meantime, I will be charged an activation fee even though I cannot activate and I have wasted my weekend with Apple.
I have a feeling this will become a bigger story on Monday when more stories get out to the press and Mr. Jobs returns from celebrating his "succesful" launch. This is a very frustrating experience and this will probably be my last Apple purchase (I own numerous Apple items).
    Good luck to everyone else.
    I h

Sorry to hear about all your issues. I am about in the same boat. But, I think mines kinda worse..
Got my phone last night, got the typical Your activation requires additional time. Spoke with an AT&T rep about 4pm this afternoon. He said he would push the activation and give it up to 2 hours more.. Great! 5 hours later and nothing. So I call the 877 number, option 3 to check activation status.... Your phone is activated and you should be able to use all features.. WHAT?! I look at my phone.. I still have a globe telling me to activate iphone, connect to iTunes.. Im 45 mins on hold waiting for a rep again and im more mad then it would have been if it said it was still processing! I understand glitches, and I expected a few issues, but nothing like this..
And as i am typing i just got a customer service agent...
They've done everything they can and i need to wait, since it hasn't been 24 hours yet.. ok, now *** is that?! Im just laughing at how absurd that call was. The customer service rep didn't even understand that i was still at the activate screen, she was asking if i had a dial tone? and if i could get into mail or ipod at the bottom.. oh my.. I really hope I dont have to call AT&T support again for my life with this phone, cause its not starting out good..
Best to all.. lets hope this gets resolved soon!!

  • R.I.P Steve jobs a creative genius who left his mark on the world.....

So sad to hear the news about steve jobs my thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time, he changed how think about our devices about not just needing them but wanting them. R.I.P.

The way Steve and Apple Computer touched so many lives in so many positive ways is profound beyond words.  It is indeed a sad loss for us all, but more so for his family and friends and associates.  I too, thank him for enriching my life and opening me up to devices that have brought pleasure and freedom to my personal world.

  • Steve Jobs obviously was "the man" because every update or install now gives me problems... i can no longer download anything to my iphone.. giving me errors of "cannot install at this time" and i get an error installing itunes on my other laptop... wth?!

Steve Jobs obviously was "the man" because every update or install now gives me problems... i can no longer download anything to my iphone.. giving me errors of "cannot install at this time" and i get an error installing itunes on my other laptop... wth is going on!??!
ok so the download problem with my iphone.. what could be the cause of that? ive restarted and deleted the "undownloaded app" over 10 times already. and restarted the iphone 10 times... next thing i know i cant install itunes on my laptop.... geez man..
obviously there is a fix which someone will help... but why should i have to go through all that crap to install a so called uncomplicated software... when you think about it this really shouldnt even be an issue.
normally if the thing dosent work. normally with most programs you just uninstall the uncompleted software and just reinstall and everything is usually good to go.. help!

ive never had any problems with ap[ple products in the past... this is a first and a stupid problem if you ask me

Going through the feedback and support pages will be a waste of your time. Apple won't respond to feedback, and support can't do anything regarding product suggestions, particularly not from a company with an existing product they wish to sell. The only attention you might get from Apple would be possible interest in selling your product through the Apple Stores, and I don't know how Apple chooses the third-party products they sell. All I could suggest would be writing to Apple's corporate headquarters:
    Apple
    1 Infinite Loop
    Cupertino, CA 95014
with perhaps "Attention: Retail Sales Division" and telling them about your product and your interest in it being sold through the Apple Stores.

And all placement in which I highlighted in previous version of the book, it directs me to a completely different page and sentence in which I highlighted previously. And the frustrating is, I can't delete the false highlight.
