Yes, whenever you cannot find something you want at the iBookstore, you simply need to try the other free ereader apps like Kindle, Nook, Kobo, and Googlebooks and see if one of them has it.

  • Steve Jobs bio in French?

    Hello everyone!
The title says it all : I'm looking for the Steve Jobs "bio" in French and it's not available through the iBooks store... They have the English, Italian, Greek, Finnish and even Czech, but no French.... I know the book is available as I've seen it in stores in Canada, but I can't seem to find the ebook.
    Thanks for your help!

Thanks for your precious help! :)  I read the terms of the store and to be able to read it on my iPad, I need to download their application and create an Adobe account... Not too complicated! ;)
Thanks again to everyone who replied!

  • Steve Jobs and his magical powers!

I have found two things I can't do in iWeb but Steve Jobs can...
    1) When I drag a photo album onto the page iWeb asks if i want to place all the photos in that album. If you click 'no' it doesnt do anything, if you click 'yes' it sprays your site with all the pics in that album.
When Steve did it in the macworld webcast the album turned into a button (without an alert) which when activated starts a slideshow of all the pics in that album.
    Why doesnt mine do that?
    2) When I 'manually' create a slideshow and go to view it, instead of the slick looking black background with reflections etc that Steve Jobs gets, I get a crappy 'Quicktime 5' lookalike window thats about as appealing as treating sunburn with a dose of sandblasting. Whats going on?

The behaviour you describe doesn't apply when you drag to a Photo page, which is probably what Steve was demonstrating. These have a Start Slideshow button already on the page. When you drag your photo album to the placeholder area your images are laid out in a grid of thumbnails and you can edit the captions and change the style of the thumbnail frames.
As said by the other poster, you only get the black background and reflection and transparent controls when you publish to .Mac, but there are options available for overriding the HomePage-style slideshow which iWeb defaults to when published to a local folder, as explained in this topic:

Why in Venezuela the Time Zone is not correct?

    WHY?

    Hi, Hush17277 -
Re being able to access the Apple Store on the internet, you should be able to access the main Apple Store via the "Store" link at the top of this page - unless your country's government has required that the ISP's which operate there restrict access to it. As to being able to make a purchase, however, that depends upon credit card agreements between card issuers and nations - this has nothing to do with Apple.
Re the ability to purchase songs from iTunes, apparently that is a matter of permissions from the particular nations' governments involved as well as licensing-for-sale restrictions by the publishers of the music. It is only relatively recent that such became available in Europe and Canada. This, too, is not an Apple issue - I suspec that if it were up to Apple, there would be no obstacles to anyone purchasing songs from the iTunes Store anywhere in the world.
Re the Venezuela time zone question, apparently Venezuela has decided to go its own way -
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7134927.stm
    - there is no way that Apple, nor any other computer or software vendor, could have forseen that happening.
Re the iPhone, its availability is subject to obtaining agreements between Apple and cellphone service providers. If no service provider in a given area is willing to enter into an agreement with Apple, at terms sufficiently advantageous to both parties, then the iPhone will not be available in that area. In addition, most nations' governments have a say in approving such agreements; if a nation's government declines to approve such an agreement, it won't happen.
There are a lot of international contact points available for Apple products. These pages list many of them -

  • The Mac App Store - changing the philosophy of Steve Jobs

I've just finished Steve Jobs autobiography. I started thinking about Steve Jobs and the intentional philosophy of making sure the hardware worked well with the software to make a "few core products." The MAC App store is a sellout moving away from this truth. Perhaps Apple one day will realize that moving away from "the top five products" to supporting zillions of software apps is a huge error. It is a sellout to make more and more profits. While this may work in the short-term, I would much rather see Apple focus on a few good third-party software products. Perhaps something like a brand certification such as "Apple certified software" to be only awarded to the very best in the App store. It may be a good idea to have an SDK that is required to meet this very high standard. While I know Apple does filter the titles in their app store, it does not offer the true legacy of what Steve Jobs stood for, making the software and hardware work as team to make "great products." "People at Apple were charged to make great products and not great profits," sometimes surprising the public with what they didn't realize they needed. The App store is not built to support the high standard that is Apple. I hope this will change one day.

  • Adobe:  Show Steve Jobs who's boss.

    Adobe,
You, like many of us must be angry at Apple right now after the recent ban on 3rd party (flash) created i-phoine apps just days before the public unveiling of your new Creative Suite.  I could only image the number of man hours put in by your flash team to get the i-phone app compiler into CS5.
I do not like Steve Jobs anymore.  His open arogence and passive agressive maliciousness are beyond acceptable.
Would it be too much to ask if every application in CS5 could be released only for PC?  Sure, most people who use CS would have to buy a new computer, but it wouldn't be a mac, so it would be pretty cheap.  As a PC and Mac and Adobe user I can say there is no reason what-so-ever for Macs to be the standard for adobe products anymore.  Processor speeds, graphics cards and memory are all so high now that it just doesn't matter if you are using a mac or PC.
I know this may hurt your sales at first, but don't worry, it'll be ok.  Adobe products are the industry standard for all forms of multimedia development and the alternatives are either non-existent or crude and lacking.  You own the market.  Your customers will switch to PC if that is what you dictate.  They will have no choice; Their livelihoods/jobs all depend on your products.  In the end Apple will lose allot more money then you, which is all that matters to me anymore.  Someone needs to bring Steve Jobs down a notch and you have the power to do it.

The problem with Adobe Products is that most people use them without adequate training. A little study of various manuals, seminars and online tutorials can make one good and be able to solve those small glitches.
I don't have any problem with the CS3 as the integration is unique and unequalled by any other company. The shortcomings are the Non Realtime playback in PPro. but it renders very fast and also not accepting Inscriber CG and Title Deko like 6.5 but Photoshop, Fireworks and Afterfx are there.
Imagine this guy saying of the so called University removing Adobe Products
"Most people can not even install the latest software because of the changes to adobes install programs."
The Adobe installtion is still the same and I think the guy can not read or is new to Computers. Read the manuals Please

  • Re, "Podcasts about Podcasting" area on itunes and thank you, Steve Jobs.

    Hi,
I've just started my About.com Guide to Podcasting and was hoping to eventually be listed in this prestigious list of folks. Knowing that I'm a total "newbie," wondering if any of the iTunes folks/fellow podcasters have any advice about getting listed in this area?
I also searched through the Technology Podcasts (as well as the podcasters on podcasting page) and couldn't find my show listed. Is this just because it's so young? I've heard you need to have four to five shows up before you're considered more than a flash in the pan.
Tangent: In this first episode (at the end) I talk about how watching Steve Jobs present at last year's Apple conference (talking about latest iLife suite) transformed my adult life (obviously for the better!) Didn't know if anyone at Apple (PR folks, etc.) would be interested in hearing it, but I'd love their feedback. I'll have the podcast listed on the about.com site (front page of the podcasting channel) so I hope to have lots of listeners/subscribers.
Thanks for the advice and best regards to all,
    John C. Havens

    Hi S,
Thanks very much for your help. I'll keep on podding.
Tangent: Do you have any MAC mail experts over there? For my about.com emails, people have said the "reply to" button says, "[email protected]" instead of "com" at the end. about says it's not on their end, and I've done the preferences/account checking thing multiple times. Any thoughts? If you could respond to: [email protected] that would be great because you might be able to see what's happening.
Or here. Not sure what the protocol is, so thanks.

  • IPhone Sync hanging since purchasing "Steve Jobs" ibook

Since I purchased the new Steve Jobs iBook on my iphone, my phone won't complete a sync to itunes. It hangs on "waiting for (fill in the blank)"
I deleted the iBook from my phone and then UNchecked "Sync Books" in itunes and then re-downlaoded the iBook on the phone.
Everything is working perfectly again. Perhaps Ibook syncing with iTunes is causing some troubles.
Hope this helps anyone with similar issues!

    This worked for me:
Open iSync, it's in your Applications folder. With iSync open, from the Menu click iSync/Preferences.
At the bottom of the window click the button: Reset iSync History And, make sure all 4 buttons are checked on that window. Quit iSync and reboot your Mac.
If this does not resolve your issue, or if you are unable to open iSync, follow these steps:
In the Finder, choose Utilities from the Go menu.
    Open Terminal.
In the Terminal window that opens, type or paste the following command on a single line:
    /System/Library/Frameworks/SyncServices.framework/Versions/A/Resources/resetsync .pl full
    Press Return.
When the operation is complete, Quit Terminal from the Menu and reboot.
Now try to go to System Preferences/.mac (or MobileMe) and see if you can access the Advanced tab.

  • Steve Jobs

    Hi All,
I know that this may not be the right place to talk about the passing of Steve Jobs, but i wanted to express my condolences to his family, friends and co-workers.  He was a genius in his own right!
I have to admit, i never really liked Apple products until i purchased the iPhone 4 last year and then followed by the iPad 1 3G and love the gadgets like anything, to be honest, it is as if they are glued to my hand!!
So, what are your thoughts and experiences with Steve Jobs and Apple products?
    God bless Steve x

  • Steve Jobs Speech

I was wondering if it was possible to download Steve Jobs' keynote speech from the "One More Thing..." event a week ago. I don't have a video iPod so footage of it does me little good but I think it would be cool to download the speech, as a podcast maybe.
    Thanks.
    $lafa

Apple used to make his speeches available as a download, but I think for the past couple years they have only been available as a stream. I'm sure there are ways to record a stream, but this is the wrong forum for that discussion. Try looking in the QuickTime discussions.

  • Lunch with Steve Jobs?

    Hi Folks,
    Background -
I upgraded from OS 10.4.11 to OS 10.5 at the end of last year.. I then discovered that this upgrade nerfed my iMovie v3.0.3 which had worked perfectly right up until the upgrade (I almost managed to restrain myself from thinking.. my goodness, how like a Widows Vista upgrade) however I did not have the time to pursue a solution until this week.
    Today -
I purchased iLife08, so that I could continue to edit my ongoing Underwater Red Sea movie project.
Initially I was very disappointed on finally viewing the footage I shot in December 2007 to discover it appeared to be extremely soft focus and grainy and therefore of an unacceptable standard for my project. I initially assumed a fault had developed with my Canon DV Camcorder's focusing, although I was unsure why the footage had looked ok on the camcorder's lcd.
I then got a VERY, VERY unpleasant surprise, because I opened my original project footage which WAS nice and sharp.. NOT ANYMORE. Now it all looks as though it has been converted to a low res Quicktime format to be posted on YouTube.
So my question is very simple.. *** has Apple done in iMovie08, that appears to have ruined my footage and months of work?
I am hoping for an answer at the earliest opportunity or I am seriously considering booking a trip to Cupertino, so I can personally feed my OS 10.5 and iLife08 to Steve Jobs with NO F*ING SIDE SALAD!

It appears I may not be quite the noob that AppleMan1958 was implying..
Steve Mullen has posted a detailed critique of the nerfing of iMovie in its latest incarnation:
'1) SMPTE test pattern shot and recorded at 1920x1080 at 35Mbps on Sony EX1 (XDCAM EX). Vertical and horizontal resolution perfect up to 800-lines. (The limit of my chart.)
    2) Down-convert XDCAM EX to DV. DV horizontal resolution is about 600-lines. DV vertical resolution is about 440-lines.
    3) Import DV into iMovie 08. The copied file in the iEvent folder has full DV rez (600x440). No damage is done by the import itself.
    4) When the DV clip is played in 08, the video quality is -- as folks report -- very bad.
    5) Tested with other SD codecs -- just as bad as DV. Problem is not DV. It is SD itself.
    6) iMovie 08 kills SD resolution. WHY? My best understanding of what's going on:
    7) When playing DV, after pulling an SD frame from disk, 08 downscales the frame. The horizontal 720-pixels are scaled down to 360-pixels. The vertical 480-lines are down scaled to 240-lines. So, with SD, internally, 08 works at 360x240. This causes about a 50% loss of both H and V rez. It also drops the number of images-per-second passed through the GPU from 60 to 30fps. Both reductions have the advantage of allowing realtime FX rendering on slow machines.
    8) There are two ways vertical size could be reduced: a 480-line frame (two 240-line fields) can be scaled down to a 240-line frame (two 120-line fields) which means information from different capture times are woven together; or one field can be discarded yielding a 240-line frame. In the former case, you will see combing (thin horizontal lines) on motion. In the latter, you will not. (When playing in 08.)
    9) During SD export, the 240-lines must now be doubled to create a 480-line NTSC frame. Each of the 240-lines is sent to 2 output lines -- 1 in the odd field and 1 in the even field. Both fields in each exported frame are, therefore, the same. Stepping by FIELD -- shows no change between fields. (Depending how an up-scale is done, more vertical resolution will be lost during export.)
    10) The 360-pixels are upscaled to 720-pixels (or, 848/853/854 depending on your setting). Each of the 360-pixels must fill 2 output pixels. (Depending how an up-scale is done, more horizontal resolution will be lost during export.)
    11) Both H and V measured resolution of DV exported to DV is about 200-lines by 200-lines. No wonder folks report 08 outputs very soft video!
    12) A SMPTE chart is a very tough test. (In addition to resolution loss, the chart reveals aliasing on diagonals.) Thankfully, looking at real-world DV, the results are nowhere near as bad as from a chart. With real-world video, the images are simply very soft -- about VHS resolution. (Moving objects become a blur.)
    13) With exported DV: clicking the QT Player's HQ button OFF slightly reduces vertical AND horizontal resolution. Clicking it ON -- the DEFAULT mode -- returns the V and H rez to "normal." (Yes, the pix looks better when HQ=ON, but the resolution difference is unmeasurable.)
    14) Exporting HQ=ON from QT Player does NOT increase file size. Therefore, exporting from the QT player is of no help to the quality problem.
    15) An alternate codec for going to iDVD is either M-JPEG or AIC (MPEG-2). Clicking the HQ button OFF/ON does NOTHING with video using these codecs.... '

  • Education App Highlighted in Steve Jobs' press release for the ipad 2

Does anyone know what the education app is that was highlighted during Steve Jobs press release for the ipad 2? It showed a child in a classroom tracing a number or letter outline; and it looked like chalk when he traced it.

I'm pretty sure it isn't. I might be wrong; but I've searched images of mathboard and it looks to be more for advanced elementary and junior high math. The images shown in the press release were of a kindergarten-age child tracing a single number...more of a learning your numbers/letters than working with math. It showed an outline of the number/letter that the child traced with their finger--as far as I have researched, there is no feature like that on mathboard (where there is a 3"-4" number or letter that the children are to trace to learn their numbers/letters).
