Stick-on labels?

Are stick-on labels that cover then entire DVD still a bad idea? The last time I looked this up, the popular opinion was it could throw the disc out of balance messing up your DVD player or the label could come off inside your DVD player causing obvious problems. What's the latest thinking on these?

>What's the latest thinking on these?
The latest thinking is that the main problem with sticky labels is that they will warp your DVD because of the different thermal expansion coefficients from label and disc. As a result the reading laser can't focus properly and the amount of read errors will shoot up. Normally these errors are "correctable", but they can still cause problems like stuttering, skipping or audio getting out of sync.

  • Good Software for DVD Labels?

I had to replace my hard drive and therefore lost 3rd party apps I had installed. Now that I have the chance, can someone recommend a good DVD Label software? I used expressit before, and it seemed very basic and quirky. It seems to be the only thing obvious and available in stores like Staples, etc. Any other ideas? Anything I can download for free online?

The reported damage is both from the adhesive melting and the imbalance when the label is not placed correctly. Some people have had DVD disks getting stuck inside players because the adhesive loosened. Others complain of stuttering and playback problems....problems that do not show up if the same project is burned to a DVD disk without a stick-on label.
If anyone has used the stick-ons and is not having problems, all I can say is wait....sometimes the poor playback will not be apparent for some time, and then it starts ruining your disk.
I don't use any stick-ons. I think the very first DVD I made, using the first versions of iMovie and iDVD, did have a stick-on label, and the disks were ok after about 5 years. However, I reburned to Verbatim's archival gold disks, and wrote carefully on the disk with a CD/DVD marker. (I don't have a printer that can print to disks).

  • What software do I use to make cd/dvd labels?

I enjoyed using iDVD to put together a slideshow for an 80th birthday party.  Now I want to share the slideshow on dvd's, but what software should I use to make dvd labels and jewel case covers?

I agree 100% with Klaus1. You don't want to use stick on labels. If you have an Epson R series printer you can print directly to discs with it.
For printing on discs or making case inserts/covers one application that I like is Discus.  Here are some of the designs I've created and used with it:

  • What is the best way to print a CD Label

I am not a web-designer or work in advertising. But I do have lots of DVDs and CDs I've created (most of them are videos & photos of my daughter) and currently I am only labeling them with a marker.
I really want to have a nice looking (somewhat professional look) of CD Label. I purchased those CD Labeling Kit, but I want to "customize" my label, not using one of the free template that they've given. I do have several of CD Labels made and they turned out ok (I use Photoshop CS). But everytime I print a CD Label, it always take me 3 to 4 times to get it right. This really has wasted me ink. What I meant to "get it right" is the print is printed exactly or a little bit more than the "circular" part on the sticker. Also, some time what looks good on the screen, it came out fuzzy on the printout (eventhough I printed it on 300 dpi).
Anyway, what's the secret to print a customize CD Label, and got it printed exactly on the circular part of the label/sticker? Is it wort it to get one of those printer that can print the label straight onto the CD? I heard that in the long run, having the sticker is not good.
    Any suggestions is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    amanda

    amanda:
I use Discus 3.6 which is a label program which is packaged with Toast.
You do have to have a tempate holder to stick the label on the CVD.
There is no question that printing on the disk is the best solution especially with DVDs as they spin much faster than CDs.
I have had some issues with other people reading the DVDs and that may be attributed to that missalignment or the burning speed.
In Toast there is a method of burning slection. Be careful as there are CD speeds and DVD speed slelectons. Use the right one.

  • Error /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH-2015 did not show up

    Hello,
I downloaded, checked and burned my install cd.
I booted it and choose the x86_64 After a few seconds I see this message:
Waiting 30 second for device /dev/disk/by_label/ARCH-201505
Error : /dev/disk/by_label/ARCH-201505 did not show up after 30 seconds.

Hello, my first post, installed Arch just a few days ago I love it already, it's everything i was looking for!
Anyway, OP your problem appeared to me too and I could not start the installation. However I am proud to say I found a solution
The usb stick is labeled wrong and should be changed to whatever the error says (for me it was 'ARCH_201505').
At least I believe so. I cd'ed to the specified folder ( /dev/disk/by_label/ ) and soft linked like so "ln -s ARCH_201505 ../../sdx1" which was my usb.
Then exit and the installation should commence without any problems. Hope I helped

  • Cd/dvd label printing

being new to macs having switched from pcs i am trying to print labels for cds and dvds that i produce for customers.
is there any built in software to do this within mac or do i have to purchase something, and if so what is there out there that others are using?
mac pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi, I'm new here and I don't even own a Mac (yet) but I have been doing my "replacing a PC with a Mac research" and I hink there may be a better solution for you - two in fact. I agree that one should never stick a label on a CD/DVD. One really excellent solution is Lightscribe discs. This requires special media which is readily available in any 'puter store although slightly more expensive. It uses the same laser that burns your data to burn a professional looking label on your CD/DVD. Of course, you need a Lightscribe CD/DVD burner which can be bought as anexternal drive and connected to your Mac. The drive will come with appropriate software for label burning. Check here: www.lightscribe.com
The other alternative is "painted" CD's or DVD's. Again slightly more expensive than standard blanks and readily available. For these, you need a printer with a CD/DVD tray. Either way will cost you some bucks.
I opted for the Lightscribe route because the labels are more permanent, but they are not colour.

  • Labeling DVD-R's

I've been told not to put Avery 5692 Laser labels directly onto DVD-R's. that they lose their 'stick' and could cause damage
when making small number of copies, is their any other way than writing with a sharpie by hand?
sorry if this isn't appropriate question but didn't see any posts about it.
    Thanks in Advance!

All glues degrade over time... meaning that none of them are reliable for the long haul. Unless a label (glue on) is placed correctly, it can put the disc out of balance and cause it to not to play correctly. Honestly, I would not use any stick on labels. You'll regret it eventually.
A sharpie, if dull nosed, should be okay, but the fine point sharpies may cause damage to the disc. If you write lightly, it should be okay.
An inkjet printer capable of printing to DVDs (inkjet printable surfaces) is the most common approach people use. No stickers, no pens, just a inkjet printer.
Another solution are these new fangled lightscribe drives which allow you to label the disc with the drive that recorded it. Requires special drive and media, but no messy inks to worry about. May prove to be the next best thing to screened labels done by replicators.

  • MSI x58 ProE and Corsair 12GB (3x4GB) RAM Issues

    Greetings!
New poster here with a question that I cannot seem to find an answer to anywhere. I've looked over the forums but have had no luck figuring it out. My goal is to identify the culprit and replace the appropriate parts.
I built this computer in 2009 with the intention of doing OpenCL/CUDA computing and handle all my multimedia. At the time, 6GB DDR3 RAM (3x2GB) was about all I could afford. The machine works great, but lately, attempting to do some video and image processing has been hitting limits on my available RAM. I also want to run a linux VM or two. I thought I would order the Corsair 3x4GB DDR3 kit from NewEgg and not have any problems upgrading. I didn't have any plans of running the 6 and 12 GB sets simultaneously because I thought there would be some sort of memory density/timing issues.
New RAM desired: Corsair Dominator with DHX Pro Connector and Airflow II Fan - DDR3 Memory Kit (CMP12GX3M3A1600C9)
Old RAM in system: Corsair Dominator with DHX Pro Connector - 6GB Triple Channel (CMP6GX3M3A1600C8)
Request 1: Can I mix the 6 and 12 GB sets (for a total of 18GB) if I keep the density the same across each set of slots? There are 3 black (primary) and 3 blue (secondary). I was thinking of putting the 12GB in black, and 6GB in Blue.
I placed the order, received it, and went to install it yesterday. Took the existing 6GB out and dropped the 12GB in, saw that BIOS recogized it with the right timings, and proceeded to boot Windows up. Blue-screen at the very first Windows logo. I thought "well that stinks, let's check to see if the RAM is defective through MemTest." Downloaded an ISO of 4.2, fired it up, and it hung right away. Hung in the "Address Test, Own Address" test. Big fat A note: BIOS and MemTest both recognized the full capacity of the sticks.
My next thought was "Well, one of them might be bad, let's try to find out which one." I individually put each one in the first slot on the board, ran MemTest, and showed 0 problems on any tests with each of them.
Summary thus far: Individually, each 4GB stick works perfectly. In combination, they fail. The full 3x2GB set works perfectly.
My next theory was that my board might be bad (even though the 3x2GB set in the same slots has no issues). Knowing that the first slot was good with every bit of memory I put in there, I left a 4GB stick in slot 1, and dropped a 4GB stick in slot 2. MemTest hung again. Thinking it might have been that one stick, I put the other one in there, and it hung also. So, slot 2 looks suspect. Move the sticks to 1&3, and they look fine, but that still leaves me missing 4GB of RAM.
I've followed advice and re-seated the CPU, looked for bent pins (none found), and tried manually setting the timings to the 9-9-9-24 that is printed on the sticks. No luck with any of that.
Request 2: So, my question to you is what am I missing? I feel like the board is the problem, due to the slot 2 problem with the 4GB sticks. However, my 2GB sticks don't have any problems at all in the same slots. Could the 4GB sticks require a little more power that my board might not be pushing out (the board is labeled at 1.5V, the sticks are labeled 9-9-9-24, 1.65V)? Would a bent pin be causing this that my eyes just cannot see? I read somewhere that a guy had a pin that was 0.25mm off that was causing his problems.
Or should I be looking at the memory? The 3x2GB set works fine, but the 3x4GB does not.
I'm not sure what my next step should be other than replace the RAM first, motherboard second. The RAM I just got, so I could RMA it if I knew exactly what the problem was. The motherboard is approaching 3 years old and presumably is out of warranty. I wouldn't mind replacing it, but I don't want to spend money right now if I don't have to.
I don't have a second machine to test on, although I'm trying to locate one (most of my friends don't build custom PCs). I have also tried putting the 6GB in the black slots and 12GB in the blue, but the machine doesn't work with that configuration either.
Request 3: Could someone explain how I could aim for 1066MHz on my RAM? I read that on the X58 Pro-E that this resolves most problems with random bluescreens. When I try to do this, I get lost in the numbers/options within the BIOS.
Anything else I might be missing? I'm out of ideas
Thank you all so much for the help!

    Hi and welcome,

As you can see, above 1066MHz you need to overclock both the processor and the mainboard.
    I think for your config the best shot is 3 x 4GB DDR3-1333 (9-9-9-24 at 1.55-1.60V)

can this be a permissions issue?
I ran saproot.sh but somehow it is setting owner as sidadm and group as sapsys to some of the br* files
I tried by changing the permissions to oraSID : dba but still the error is the same
    Any suggestions?

Means you have not initialized the medias but trying to take backups.
First check how many medias you have entered in your tape count parameter for archive log backups (just go to initSID.sap and check)
Then increase/reduce them to according to your archive backup plan >> Initialize all the tapes according to their name (same as you have initialized in initSID.sap) >> stick physical label to all the medias according to name >> Schedule archive backups
It will not ask you for initialization as already you have initialized in second step.
Suggestion: Use 7 medias per week (one tape per day)

  • 24 inch iMac CD problem

    What’s up with this?????????
24Inch iMac with 2 gigs of memory no other active applications
Wow iTunes takes a long time down loading a music CD 10 minutes for one 554mb disc
CD is loud. sounds like a floppy drive struggling to read the disc
Making a lot of noise, CD is hot after eject
After first song begins to play playback skips.
Put the same CD in my Quicksilver 2002 and it took 4 minutes
To download the same CD. CD Nice and cool
    No skipping during playback.
Anyone else having this issue with their puter having trouble reading certain
CD or DVD's with the computers CD/DVD recorder.?
Quicksilver Dual Processor Power PC G4 1.5 Gigs of Ram 2 MB L3 SDRAM   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

I have noticed that my iMac is much more persnickety about the discs that it reads than my Pioneer DVR-107 in my old G4 tower.
If the disc is not precisely flat (e.g. there is a stick-on label on the disc), my iMac seems to have some issues reading it. I get the clunky sounds from the Superdrive and the slower read speeds. I have had one or two discs that it simply could not read. And yes, the discs tend to be hot when ejected from the drive.
I am seriously thinking of an external tray-loading drive, maybe a Pioneer DVR-110 or whatever the newest model is. They read and write MUCH faster than the slot-loading drives which are really meant for notebooks. I would like a FireWire 800 drive, because my 24" iMac has a handy-dandy FW800 port that I don't use because this is the first machine I have had that has supported it.
Anyone know of any good FW800 external casings that are NOT SATA (in other words they are ATA) and will fit a 5 1/4" drive? I want a casing with an internal cooling fan and, of course, its own power supply.
    Thanks guys!

  • Playback problem - video playback stops; any suggestions?

I have distributed about 20 copies of a DVD I made using iMovie and iDVD v4.x - and about 5 of the discs are reported to freeze during playback. Because not all of the 20 discs have been viewed, it's possible the percentage of discs with playback problems may be even higher. No two discs are freezing at the same spot, or even in the same movie (there are 3 short movies on the disc).
I got no errors during burning, but I did not 'verify' each disc after burning, either. I did play back my 'master' disc on my home DVD player to make sure it was OK before using it to create a disk image - which I used to burn all the other discs.
Some of the discs I burned from the disk image using Toast Titanium 6.1.1, until I discovered Apple's Disk Utility was actually a little faster. No way to tell now if the 'bad' discs are all from the same burn software. Though both Toast and DU gave me an option to burn faster than the rated speed, I used the rated burn speed of 8x, and I did not do anything else on the Mac while burning the discs.
My first thought was bad media. I used both Memorex and Sony DVD-R media (Taiwan) - there is no easy way to for me to find out if all the 'bad' disks are one brand or the other - but hopefully these brands do not have a 20% rate of defective discs.
My second thought was format-player incompatibilities (-R vs +R), but replacement discs, using the same media on my end, solved the problem for most people (one person's replacement disc froze, but at a different spot than the first one).
My final guess - I wonder if the playback problems might have something to do with the stick on labels I used? These are a Memorex brand product called "CD&DVD" labels, but the fine print on the back says: "Warning: Using a Standard or Full-Face label on DVDs may result in the disc becoming unreadable."
    Any solutions?
Quicksilver G4, 867 Mhz   Mac OS X (10.4)   Pioneer DVR-108 (not OEM), firmware 1.20, PatchBurn profile

I just wanted to add my 2 cents. I haven't been on this forum for months. I've been happily making DVDs in batches of 10 -50 to distribute. I've been making them in my emac. Occassionally I'd get ones that wouldn't play in a client's player. The solution was to send a replacement. Usually that worked. Often I'd send a replacement that wouldn't play in one client's player but found that the disk would play in another client's player. The worst case was when the ist three DVDs I sent to one person wouldn't play, but the fourth did. But most of the time, the second one I'd send worked fine (All of these were made in the same batch from the same media (usually Fuji or Verbatim).
Recently I started getting lots more than usual complaints about problem DVDs. I checked out a bunch of them by actually playing them on both my computer, and a stand alone Cyberhome player. They were all made from a particular batch of Fuji media. Now I've previously burned hundreds of playable DVDs made from Fuji media, so I imagine it is just a fluke. (I hope) Some of them would play perfectly all the way to the last 5 minutes of an hour long presentation, and then start stuttering. Some begin stuttering in the middle. Several wouldn't even start up in my cyberhome player. Most of them would end up freezing at some point during the stuttering. The stuttering was never at the same exact place on any of the DVDs.
As an aside, I discovered something that I didn't know was possible. When a DVD froze in my cyberhome player at the menu stage, I'd push the eject button, remove the DVD, and the menu frame was still visible unchanged on the TV until I turned off the player or put another DVD in! I guess there must be some sort of cache in the player that stores the image. Very interesting. I've never seen that with a normally functioning DVD.
I also played each defective DVD in my computer to compare. One or two managed to play all of the way through on the computer, but most exhibited similar misbehavior on my emac. I'd say that, in general though, they all played a bit better on my computer.
Then it occured to me that there was another possible explanation. I was burning these from a disk image file that I had stored on an external HD. Whenever I needed a new batch of DVDs I would copy the disk image file back onto my emac from the external drive, and use disk utility to burn the disks. What if the disk image was corrupted? That might explain the problems.
Another thought that occured to me was the perhaps the process of burning a dozen or more DVDs in a row might cause a heat buildup in the burner and affect the burning in some way.
So I retrieved a good DVD made in an earlier batch of Fuji, made a new disk image of it, and left the image on the computer and didn't transfer it back to the external drive (on TDK media, because that's all I had sitting around), played the copy back on both my computer and Cyberhome player to make sure it worked perfectly. I then generated another dozen copies.
You may wonder how I had enough time to do all this. I'd just put a DVD in the player or my emac and listen to it while doing my ordinary office work. If I heard stuttering(it was my voice on the DVD) I'd instantly notice. I did this all day for a couple of days.
So anyway, I played 5 finished TDK disks all the way through today and they played perfectly. I guess the next test is to use the disk image of the same DVD from my external drive to see if i also get a good burn from it on the same TDK media and burner.
I did have time to do one other test though. I took a couple of DVDs that played well and put paper lables on them using the stomper system. They still played perfectly on both my computer and Cyberhome player. I'd speculate that paper lables are probably okay if they are applied perfectly, perfect centering, no air bubbles, good contact, and the disk stored in clean dry area. I've seen other peoples' CDs or DVDs with paper lables that had become wrinkled from exposure to high humidity and/or heat. I can imagine that they would tend to malfunction.
One client with a certain brand player actually took the "offending" DVD down to a AV store, and bought a replacement player that WOULD play it. I do think that it is interesting and useful to know that one brand player will play a particular particular DVD and another won't.
Since I make batches, I'm considering buying a couple more different brand DVD players, and then doing a bit of quality control - Trying out sample DVDs on all players before I mail out a batch to clients.
I hope that my observations might be useful for others.

  • Printing of song lists results in unreadable mess.

Printing iTunes Jewel Case "Long Playlist" results in jumbled mess with songs printed on top of each other. For years I was able to print without such problems, From what I'm reading and hearing it's a problem that only Apple can fix. Come on man! Fix it, waht happend to the great service that Apple use to provide?

First, make a custom print template (Print dialog box->page setup->manage custom sizes). I use 3.5 X 4.5. Then, print the song list using print to pdf. Use the scale option in the page setup dialog box to make it fit your template. Get some Avery 6878 or similar shipping labels. Use MS Word mailing label wizard to print by selecting the Avery template for your label. Drag the pdf into the MS Word template & print. Stick the label on your jewel box.

  • Any current Lightscribe Software for Mac?

Hi, new Mac user here, just coming over from a Windows machine. and loving it!. Can anyone recommend Lightscribe software for mac. I've followed links on previous queries, but as these are a little dated, and the original HP ran site has closed down so I'm still struggling to find something suitable.
I know LaCie have some apps, but I'm assuming these only work with their writers.
I'm a wedding photographer so use Lightscibe all the time as my A2 printer wont print CD's and I hear a lot of bad stuff about the stick on labels damaging drives.
At the moment, I'm also looking to replace my desktop with an iMac, but need to see I can still have the same functionality first. Thanks

I find that Lacie's "Lightscribe Labeler" works quite nicely now that they have patched it to support Snow Leopard:
    http://www.lacie.com/support/drivers/driver.htm?id=10061
Whilst that wasn't working following my upgrade to 10.6, I used the Lightscribe Simple Labeler:
    http://www.lightscribe.com/downloadsection/mac/index.aspx?id=852
The latter, as you'd expect, doesn't have many features and doesn't support full disc labelling.
That's using a Lacie D2 16x Lightscribe external drive connected with Firewire 400.
    Hope that helps

If you have the red band, two antenna router, then the password is REALLY long and it's on the red sticker, and labeled WPA2 key, NOT login password
If you have any other vz router, then the password for wireless is going to be labeled WEP Key and it will be found on the sticker of the router.
