Stickies go blank

This is just a minor inconvenience.
Sometimes text on a stickie go partly blank and then when I click on them the disappeared text comes back and disappears again after clicking out.
Has any one encountered this glitch?

YES, that is so annoying. (you mean stickies in Dashboard, right?).
A workaround is to copy the text and then paste it in again, however that only works temporarily, but even that shouldn't be necessary.

  • Dashboard stickies blank

I am aware of the other posts relating to this issue, however my stickies database file has only one line in it when opened with text editor. I had so much important info on my dashboard and angry really isnt the word. All 20 stickies are blank but in the correct position and the correct colour (which makes me even more angry as it was able to save this kind of inane info but not the most important thing (the contents).
Please can someone help, I have absolutely no way of getting back that info otherwise.
in the worst case scenario i have a pretty old time machine backup but its from my old install so i "dont have the privileges" to access the stickies database.

then you should be angry with yourself for not keeping a backup. if you value your data AT ALL you should always back up. there are all kinds of software issues that can cause data loss. and apart from that every single hard drive fails eventually. it's a question of if not when. and it can happen at any moment and with no warning.

most likely there is nothing you can do if you don't have a backup. but dashboard stickies are not kept in the stickies database file. that's for the regular Stickies application. dashboard stickies are kept in a separate preference file. it's home directory/library/preferences/widget-com.apple.widget.stickies.plist. Quicklook this file and see what's inside.

  • How to add a blank line/return!

So simple, it would seem, and yet I can't find a way to do this in adobe acrobat!
All I want to do is stick a blank line in the pdf, a return. At the moment the text reads like this?
    "jskdbvjkls\bvj\s
    skjfdbvjkashbvgkj
    askjfnvlkasjnvskjdn"
    akfgnvlkasfdnvgkangfdhnsdfgnsfgmnsfmjndfhmjdgfhmjgfhm
I would like it to read like this:
    "jskdbvjkls\bvj\s
    skjfdbvjkashbvgkj
    askjfnvlkasjnvskjdn"
    akfgnvlkasfdnvgkangfhmxfhgmnxfhmxgfhmgfxhmghmghm
The narrow text is a poem (in the middle of some prose) and I'd like there to be a space between the end of the poem and the start of the explanation. However, they each seem to be inside different boxes(?) and if I press return to create a blank line, the last line of the poem overlaps with the first line of the prose. I've struggled with this for ages, but can't find a way to do it. Can somebody set me free from this incredibly annoying frustration?

This type of edit should not be performed in the PDF.  You need to edit the
original file and then create a new PDF.
If you can't do that then either export it or try to move all the text
"boxes" you see. There's no other way of doing it.

  • Computer won't recognize blank CD-R's

I stick a blank CD (tried many different makers) into my Combo Drive slot. It takes too long to recognize, then when it does, it thinks that the CD has a song on it (usually Blue Cantrell). But they're completely blank, according to every other computer I try.
This all happened when I upgraded to iTunes 5.
In fact, my Finder won't even recognize the blank CD-R's half of the time. My computer recognizes other CD-ROM's and DVD's just fine!
    Am I going crazy?

I just had the same problem two days ago. Everything was fine before I installed Roxio Toast. Now, it's hard for me to say what is the problem exactly because I deleted Roxio with another bunch of preferences at the same time. I did not reinstall it because I don't need it so I don't know if it was the problem.
Hopefully this may help you, if you have Roxio, I suggest you see if it recognizes the CD-R. I've deleted: desktop preferences and every other preferences linked to Roxio Toast Platinum and the other programs it installed: spin doctor etc. You can try this first and reboot your computer. Goodluck!

  • Blank CD and Sidebar behavior

Can someone confirm this behavior for me:
    1. Stick a blank cd into your drive
    2. Open the finder and locate the blank cd icon in the sidebar
    3. Control Click the sidebar cd icon and select eject
    4. You get a finder message that says, "Are you sure you want to create an empty disk?"
    Huh?
Then, if you drag the Untitled CD on the desktop to the trash to eject it, the Untitled CD icon sometimes stays in the sidebar. The only way to get rid of the sidebar icon is to insert a blank cd again, control click on each (now you have two sidebar icons) and select remove from sidebar.
    Then, eject the blank cd.
    Huh?
    Thanks

  • I can't create audio CD in itunes 10.3

I "upgraded" to iTunes 10.0.0.68 a while back. When I did this the various options for creating an audio CD vanished. I've scoured many apple forums & found lots of people have this issue. The feedback they get is generally insinuating that they are stupid because they can't see the "burn" button on the "advanced" tab under "edit>preferences>advanced" or they are not clicking the playlist or some other thing.
So what I'm saying is that none of the places I have searched offered an explanation. Eventually I decided to "upgrade" to 10.3.1.55 because most of the suggestions recommended that as a last resort. There is still no option to burn an audio CD or an mp3 CD anywhere in iTunes for Windows.
I'm running XP, I have two different burners that work with every single program I have, except iTunes. And it's really not that they don't work with iTunes, because iTunes would need to have a "burn" option somewhere in the program for them to not work with iTunes. And it does not. The only thing I can do is create a backup of my iTunes library. That is not what I need to do.
Does anyone know if iTunes is still capable of creating audio CDs? If so, please, please tell me your secrets! Thanks so much for any help you can give.

Okay, I may have answered my own question. When I have iTunes up, & I insert a blank disc I get a pop-up that tells me I've inserted a blank disc, if I want to burn to it, go to file>burn bla bla bla and sure enough, now the option shows up. Hmmm...
So here's what I did: I removed the disc & restarted iTunes to see if the option would go away. It did not. Even with no disc in the drive I now have the option "burn playlist to disc" under the "file" menu. It was not there 20 minutes ago, and has not been there ever with 10.0.0.68. I cannot say whether I ever inserted a blank disc while 10.0.0.68 was up or not, but I do know that I burned lots of stuff with other programs. My next experiment will be to completely reboot the computer, then start iTunes & see if the option is still there.
I'll let you know how that turns out.  :-)
Here is my suggestion to anyone having the same issue: just pull up iTunes, then stick a blank disc into your drive & see what happens. I'm betting your issue will be resolved.

  • Software raid 1 drive(s) failed

Curious on what to do with a RAID 1 Drive (s) failure? I've searched the community and cannot find similar issue/answers.
    Configuration:
One 1TB OS & App Drive is fine
Two 3TB RAID 1 Drives for Video scratch are fine
Two 2TB RAID 1 Data Drives are my issue
I'm using the software raid in OSX and it shows "2TB Data Drive/Mirrored Offline"
Both drives have "Failed" next to them
I have backup this Data Drive in Time Machine and a recent full back up to a single drive that is off site.  I believe I have a good back up strategy with Time Machine and offsite back ups via Voyager S3.  I guess we'll find out!
My question is how do I find out if it's a HW issue or SW issue with this configuration ?  And then how to go about recovering them?
Initially when I looked in Disk Utility it appeared that only one of the 2TB drives had "Failed" next to it but now after a reboot "Failed" is next to both drives.
My initial hope was that one of the drives had failed and I'd be able to just replace that drive and the RAID System would rebuild from the other drive.
    Any assistance would be appreciated.
    Thanks

RAID 1 just copies the same data to two (or more) drives at the same time, it's only for mission critical data loss requirements where a drive failure during writing would be catastrophic. Like taking purchasing orders or getting a phone call from ET for example.
RAID 0 is dangerous as the data path is separated to how many drives in the RAID 0 set, one drive glitches and all data is lost. But provides insane speeds.
RAID 5 is a much more reliable, it combines many drives (4 or more for more speed) splitting the data path but also has redundancy factor that if a drive dies it can be replaced and the data is recovered from the other drives. Usually a RAID 5 is in a external enclosure with it's own cooling and hardware controllers, not software based RAID where your CPU is being overloaded.
There are other forms of RAID some combinations like RAID 1+0, RAID 6, 10 and so forth, you can find out more about the more eclectic RAID types online.
RAID 5 is more ideally suited to video requirements for data storage, with perhaps a RAID 0 as a scratch disk or a RAID 0 + 1 (the RAID 0 is mirrored to another RAID 0) if your going to take a while working on it that increases the potential of failure.
Once the work is completed, it's sent to the RAID 5 where it's safe with it's redundancy and speed.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/RAID/Desktop
The thing to remmeber with the failed RAID 1 Data drive is the data is still on the drive, even though it failed and perhaps things are messed up a little on it on the directory. All the drive needs is to be told it's not part of a RAID 1 anymore, that it's a normal drive, a simple fix, but I don't know how to go about it.
You have two drives and two chances to recover the data off off, simply disconnect one data drive and reboot, see if it will mount and or you can repair the drive in Disk Utility.
If not pull one drive out and stick another blank one in there and download Data Rescue and simply recover the files to the new blank drive. DR works by simply reading the files themselve, not the file struture or anything else.
Software RAID is unreliable, it depends upon the CPU. Opt to get a external RAID where it's based in hardware instead. Use eSATA if all possible.
Also consider using backup software, like Carbon Copy Cloner which can be scheduled to make a backup of your data during the middle of the night. This way if something happens to either your boot drive or a data drive, the clone won't immediately copy the issue to the other drive like a RAID 1 does.
Also Carbon Copy Cloner makes "hold option" bootable OS X boot drive clones, which TimeMachine doesn't.
Also TM kicks in what, like once a hour? It's likely what caused your issue, CCC will work when you schedule it.  TM is for consumers, not video pro's like yourself.

  • OS X Snow Leopard Looking for an explanation for an DIY Harddisk data recovery procedure

    Hi There,
Yesterday my 13" Unibody MacBook (A1278) popped up an "Invalid B-Tree Node Size" Mac OS X Error. searching the internet for on a solution and explanation so far gave me headaches. And did not provide me guidance for an proper Do It Yourself procedure. Off course I want to have data recovered for which no backup is available (a forced clean install now is not an option!). When booting with the install DVD and then using Diskutility fails (yes the simple recovery does not work in my case). I read about using third party software solutions (e.g. data rescue or DiskWarior) but the how to is not clear to me, which steps need to be performed ? How can such an data recovery process be performed ? What sort of hardware or wires are needed to do this ? The only Apple Machines I can use now are a other 15” MacbookPro  and an Windows XP desktop. I bought a Sharkoon SATA Quickport XT (USB3) but this product is still wrapped because I am not sure it will (or I will get it to) run under OS X. So again can anyone provide me a walkthrough for such a (troubleshooting) HDD data recovery process?
The data that needs to be recovered concerns foto's and PhD writing material in the end process of some to be published articles.
Thnx in advance for your comment!

First order of busness is to get your data off the 13"
If this data is of extreme importance, your better off letting a professional computer support specialist handle it.
Do not use Disk Warrior yet, it could make matters worse. Your data needs to be recovered and it can be provided nothing further is done to the drive.
The first 3 methods below are designed to be passive, just trying to read the data and get it safely off the hard drive first.
There is no need to extract the hard drive from the computer yet. This in itself can cause further damage.
1: Unwrap the Sharkoon SATA Quickport XT USB 3 and stick a blank internal drive in it.
If you don't have one, then return that device and/or get yourself a external powered USB 3, 2 or 1 (3 is backward compatible with 2, 1) hard drive, runs about $100 for a 1TB drive.
Hook this drive up to the 15" MacBook Pro and in your Utilities Folder is Disk Utilities.
Select this new drive and Erase > format it HFS+ Journaled with Security Option > Zero all data. (going to take a bit to complete)
2:  Use the Windows PC or the 15" MacBook Pro to download a ISO copy of PartedMagic. Burn it to a blank cd using Windows 7 right click and burn, or using the free ImgBurn for Windows. Or using Disk Utility on OS X.
    http://partedmagic.com/doku.php?id=screenshots
Hook up the now finished USB external drive (or the Quickport) to the 13" MacBook and power up.
Once the cd is burned, stick it in the MacBook and reboot holding option and c, keep holding and you will have a option to load into RAM. DO so and the disk will spit back out.
In the screen on the left is a icon called MountDevices, doubleclick it twice to get two file transfer windows. Use the third window to mount your disks. Use the two file transfer windows to navigate and transfer your files off to the external drive using drag and drop methods.
Once that's completed, unmount the drives and use the lower left corner to exit. Reboot.
Take the external drive to the 15" MacBook Pro and verify your files are there.
3: Another method if the PartedMagic cd doesn't work, is to c boot off the MacBook install disks on the MacBook, use Disk Utility to format the external drive HFS+ Journaled and install OS X on it. It might be hold option bootable, but I'm not sure if older machines can boot from a USB, usually it's Firewire for them and you don't have Firewire.
Last would be to extract the hard drive from the computer if it's easily done through the battery port then stick it in the SATA Quickport port and hook it up to the 15" and transfer your files off.  If your having disk reading errors, then on the 15" MBP download and install DataRescue, it will read the files directly via the 1's and 0's of the files themselves. Data Rescue and other recovery software needs another drive to send data to, can't recover back to the problem drive.
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
Once the data is off, you can hold c, boot from the OSX install disk for the MacBook and from the utilities menu select Disk Utility and erase (with Security option Zero all data) and format the drive HFS+ Journaled and quit, reinstall OS X again. Or you can try using Disk Repair/Warrior and see if that works. (only works from another boot drive/disk). Or use the 15" to format the drive and stick it back into the 13"

  • CD doesn't import when I click "import"

When I stick a blank CD in that I do not have in my library, SOMETIMES, after it asks me if I want to import and I agree, the CD disappears from under "Devices" and does not import. Only when I eject and reinsert does it import (after asking me if i want to import it). This happens intermittently.

I am getting the same problem - when I insert a regular audio CD of my collection to import - the computer asks whether I want to import it and then when I say yes - the Device (superdrive with the CD inside it) is no longer shown in the iTunes list or on the desktop - I had imported about 4 -5 CD's before it happened with no problems but now it happens on every one - it is like the superdrive has a problem - maybe it is too hot for multiple imports??? When I reinsert the CD (after ejecting) it now works and imports - really wierd - has anyone else experienced this and I wonder if this might be a firmware or Leopard issue??? I wonder if Apple needs to hear about this....

  • Is this a gradual systems failure?

Today I used my mighty mouse button to open dashboard but to my surprise all my stickies were blank, the calculator wouldn't work and the calendar was blank. I waited for a couple of minutes but it never came to life. I restarted my computer and when it came back up all my JPEGS in finder were opening in Adobe Illustrator. Not only were they opening in Illustrator, but when I told it to open in Preview, it said "Preview could not open that type of file". I also noticed that all my folders no longer had icons. Everything else does, just not the folders.
I installed Snow Leopard a month ago and things were running pretty well, just a little slower. I have verified the disk in disk utilities and everything was fine. Then I cleared everything out using "Clean My Mac", but still nothing. Is there anything I can do to get my computer back the way it was, or is my iMac gradually dieing?

I tried copying the files off the CD on another mac and then bluetoothing the files to myself, but when i double clicked the install file, nothing happens. I don't think I'm still under warranty, but I'll go to the apple store anyway and see what they think.
As you found out that simply will not work. You need the Install Disc that came with the computer because those discs are machine specific. As it sounds like you no longer have yours you can call Apple and for a nominal charge they will replace them. The original warranty is 1 year or is extended to 3 years if you purchased AppleCare. You can find out what your machine's status is by clicking here.

  • Combo drive won't burn cd

I have an iBook G4 purchased in 1/05. I've never really had a reason to burn a cd until recently when I purchased a digital camera. I loaded the pictures into iPhoto and tried to burn them to a cd. Everything seemed to be going fine. There was a message that the burn had been completed. My disk was ejected. Then an error message appeared, "The burn to the TEAC DV 24SL failed. The device failed to respond properly. Unable to recover or retry." There is no data on the disk and other attempts with other disks produced the same result.

I don't use iPhoto but you might try to do a burn from the Finder to see if your problems are iPhoto related or burning in general, stick a blank CD-R in the drive and then drag some documents/files onto the CD icon, when you're ready, burn the disc (under the File menu).

  • Hi i bought a new 500gb hard drive on my 2011 macbook pro, it is a blank hardrive and i forgot to save my other files on an external hard drive , i have a usb stick with mavericks installed on it. can i just go ahead and do a straight install by using it?

hi i have a macbook pro 2011 model, i decided to upgrade my hardrive and bought a 500gb blank hardrive, my query is because i wasnt able to save most of my files and my operating system to an external hard drive, i have a usb stick with a mavericks os installed on it. will i be able to do a straight install by just doing this method? i will be grateful for any tips or help u might offer, thanks.

Is it just bootable or does it have the Mavericks installation files on it? If so, yes. If not, no. You might consider getting an external enclosure. Put your old drive in it and boot to its Recovery partition. You can install from there. As a matter of fact, you can run Migration Assistant and get all your stuff over too.

  • I can export many iphoto events to a Data stick. I want to do the same with a DVD. When I do the DVD window is blank. If I drag and drop can only do one. Help

I can "export", using file, many iphoto events to a data disk. When I do the same to a DVD the DVD window is blank and nothing has been exported. When I use drag and drop to a DVD it works but I can only get one event on the disk. How do I export many iphoto events to a DVD. I am using a write only DVD. I am using a Mac Book Pro OS 10. Thanks in advance.
    Gord

When I click on the data stick icon on my desk top a window comes up. It lists the various events that I have exported. If i click on an event each picture shows up in a list. I can click on the picture and view a jpeg photo or view a avi video. When I export I select "original" as the file type. When I export to a DVD and klick on the the DVD icon the window shows up but it is blank.

  • HELP!! Dashboard Post-it's or Stickies are suddenly blank.

The yellow stickies on my dashboard have suddenly gone blank. I keep some important info on these (I know I should have it backed-up elsewhere), and they're simply empty. The actual stickies are still there, but there's no text. I tried repairing permissions, but no luck. ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!!

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
In Stickies make sure you have scrolled all the way up and down in the window. Sometimes your input is there, you just need to view the entire window.
Also, here's how to Save notes:
    Saving sticky notes
You can save a sticky note as a text file before closing it. If you don’t save the sticky note before you close it, you’ll lose all the text in the note. If you don’t close a sticky note, it will be visible whenever Stickies is open.
    To save a sticky note:
Click the close button in the top-left corner of the sticky note to close it.
In the dialog that appears, click the Save button.
Type a name and choose a destination for the text file you’re creating.
Choose a format from the Format pop-up menu:
Plain Text: Cannot include paragraph and font formatting or graphics and other embedded files.
RTF: Can include paragraph and font formatting. If you add graphics to a Rich Text Format (RTF) file, it is changed to a Rich Text Format Directory (RTFD) file.
RTFD: Can include paragraph and font formatting, as well as graphics and other embedded files.

  • Find model # with fried motherboard and blank sticker

Hello, I have a tecra a9, but no idea the model#. The sticker on the bottom is blank due to age (Toshiba should look into their sticker quality). And the motherboard is fried so I cannot boot or do anything that would reveal in the bios, in windows, or use anything software-related to identify it. I have disassembled it completely as a side-project to replace the MB, but based on the components within the case can I identify the model? Let me know what components would reveal the model I have, such as the processor, ram, graphics solution, hard drive size, wireless components etc. I will then report back what those components are and perhaps we can track down my model. Thank you!

    http://www.sparepartswarehouse.com/Toshiba,Tecra,A9,Laptop,Parts.aspx
Theres a whole list of model numbers on the second table, after selecting a model then the component part numbers are available. Hope this helps
