Sticking with Lion for now.

Based on all the trouble that people are having, and based on all the issues that people went through, including me, when upgrading to Lion, I am sticking with Lion for a while.
Lion is stable enough for me and whatever quirks and speed issues that might remain are not enough to make me torture myself and wreck my system for now.
I'll wait for 10.8.4 at least. I can't imagine all the people having trouble are novices.
Is this what Apple expects? Its users to find out what's wrong with their OS?

Mountain Lion upgrade from Lion on three Macs went
just fine.  Prior to upgrade, made sure all apps were
updated (or upgraded) to most recent versions available.
Did checks to insure all hard drives were in good shape.
Most importantly, backed up all data and also created clones
of each system, so if there were problems, return to normalcy
would be quick.
The systems:
2011 Mac Mini Server (without Server)
early 2011 13" 2.7GHz i7 Macbook Pro
mid 2010 Mac Mini used as HTPC

  • Still sticking with Netflix for now, but....

I LOVE the idea of Apple TV. I love the idea of rentals. I don't think the price is too much as it easily compares to going across the street to Hollywood Video.
However, with Netflix for my $10 a month, I can watch 4-8 movies a month, and can even rent HD if I want too. I don't mind waiting a day for them to arrive in the mail.
Until Apple offers a comparable monthly subscription I won't take the plunge just yet. They are close though.. really close.
(P.S. What's with the 24 hours to watch a movie once you have started? What happens if you get interrupted or something? They need to address that as well...)

Well the flat fee thing is def. better in my opinion as well... by the way netflix offers UNLIMITED streaming now. check that out.
Of course Netflix is very blocky, no dolby surround and doesn't work on mac or linux machines.
The price is comparable with other online services. Also, the 24 hour period is quite common. I mean the rental has to end SOMETIME that's what makes it a rental.

How is the C6200 connected to the iMac, is it via USB or Wi-Fi? If it's via Wi-Fi please make sure it's connected to the router using the printer's Network Wizard. Then click System Preferences - Print & Scan and assuming the iMac is on the same network as the printer, if it is the printer should be seen. If it's not then click the + sign and add the printer. • My Samsung SE-S084F dvd burner, used with lion for months is now suddenly unsupported. Why?

My Samsung SE-S084F dvd burner, used with lion for months is now suddenly unsupported... how can it be possible? I can now read cd/dvd but trying to burn them gives me "Internal error". Disk Utility report: "Burn support: not supported".
I burned my last dvd three days ago, running lion 10.7.3. The only thing I can think of is a software update done few days ago, something about java.
Samsung says that lion isn't officially supported, but i've used it a lot and I know it works…
    Things that i've tried:
    1) reboot
    2) firmware update
    3) many different burning software including "drutil" from the shell
    4) I've tested the device on another computer (ubuntu 11) and it works like a charm
    Additional information (drutil info):
    Vendor          Product                          Rev
    TSSTcorp      CDDVDW SE-S084F      TS00
    Interconnect: USB
    SupportLevel: Unsupported
    Profile Path: None
    Cache: 1536k
CD-Write: -R, -RW, BUFE, CDText, Test, IndexPts, ISRC
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RAM, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW, BUFE, Test
    Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
    Any tips? Thanks.

Adding other info, it's getting even more weird...
I've tried booting from an old snow leopard backup, and surprise... the devise still doesn't work!!! same error!
    It doesn't make any sense...
It's not broken but both SL and Lion on my MBP refuse to burn DVDs (they both burned a lot of them with that device in the past).
Same thing using the other USB burner borrowed by a friend, so i'm sure it's not a cable problem... what does remain? Mac's USB hardware failure? Impossible. On my SL backup there was installed Parallels desktop with an old ubuntu virtual machine configured, i've tried burning from it and it worked...
OSX (LS or Lion) + My MBP + USB Burner = fail
Ubuntu + My MBP + USB Burner = success
Ubuntu + Another computer + USB Burner = success
The could be some "broken" low level hardware bounded parameters, used only by OSX. I've already wiped NVRAM and PRAM, are there any other things i can try to wipe?

  • I just purchased the Mac Mini Server with the intention of replacing Lion Server with Lion for the first hard drive while installing Windows 7 thru Bootcamp on the second hard drive. Is it possible for me to do this? Thanks.

I just purchased the Mac Mini Server with the intention of replacing Lion Server with Lion for the first hard drive while installing Windows 7 thru Bootcamp on the second hard drive. Is it possible for me to do this? Thanks.

I would use Parallels or VMWare and use the second drive to hold the virtual machine. That way the VM only uses the space that it needs and you can still use the remainder of the drive for other things, not to mention that you would not need to reboot to run windows.
Also Time Machine does not back up a boot camp partition.

  • I can't use Quicken with Lion.  Now what?

I can't use Quicken with Lion.  Now what?

    Peter,
Another solution, though not particularly convinient, would be to create a Snow Leopard boot drive on a external drive that you can switch to when you want to run Quicken.

What are the names of those fonts?  Have you downloaded and installed the special Zawgyi font?
What is it exactly that you cannot read?  Can you provide the url?

  • Hangup issue with Lion and now Mountain Lion

On startup system hangs up for several minutes after the desktop appears, nothing works, mouse can not select anything or move to second monitor screen.  After the desktop appears in several minutes later everything works fine. Console says during the loss of control (appears in black below):
    Loss of control of computer
8/9/12 11:19:06.000 AM kernel[0]: IOHIDSystem: postEvent LLEventQueue overflow.

    Restored control to computer
What is going on? How do you get rid of this problem? Repaired permissions, disconnected mouse  and nothing helps.

Ok, I feel stupid.  I just had to adjust the resolution and it's fine.  Sorry to bother everyone!

  • Upgraded to osx lion via bootable USB stick but start up now just hangs on the grey apple screen

Hi.  I've just recently upgraded from snow leopard to osx lion 10.7.3 on my laptop and it works perfectly! However I then tried installing on desktop and problems......
    1. I got the 'the error can't install message' so after researching' I made a bootable USB stick with lion on it.
    2. Installed on start up from bootable USB stick, no problems their.
    3. Restarted and it just hangs in the grey apple screen.
I've reset the PRAM, started in safe mode, fixed disk permission etc, Even done this (http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20070204093925888).
I'm going to leave the grey screen over night to see if it does start up, but then we have the problem of an extremely slow start up.
So.... I am posting this to find out if anyone else has this problem and fixed it without having to do a full clean install as some data like email lists etc I never backed up (I know stupid).
Hope someone can help as i am lost on what else to try.
    HELP!?!?!?
    Dan.

    Update 01.03.12
Computer is starting now but.... It takes 10 minutes and that is without my sound card, hardware and external hard drives plugged in, gonna test that now.
Are their and fixes for slow start ups?
    Dan.

  • Can I sync my contacts with a supported mobile phone now with lion?

Now I've upgraded to Lion and there is no iSync, can I sync my phone (Sony Erikson that was supported in iSync)?

You can still use iSync v3.1.2 from Snow Leopard in Lion for now, however, in some OS X update in the future it will stop working as Apple has deprecated the SyncServices framework which iSync uses.

  • ATI Radeon 5770 in 2006 Mac Pro with Lion

Hit an issue with my 2006 Mac Pro when the video card died in late October. At that point I was running Lion and had kept on top of software updates. Being on a restricted budget, I have purchased and installed an ATI Radeon 5770 card from the Apple store as I cannot afford a new Mac Pro. I knew that before I did this there may be incompatability problems with this card and Lion on the older Mac Pros, and this seems to be the case.
However, having trawled through the forums it seems some users are able to run this card on 1.1 machines with Lion. So I am now wondering if I have another issue - I'd much rather stick with Lion if I can rather than revert to Snow Leopard. Now I have installed the card things seem fine with the display - the 30" cinema display no longer has blocks of pixels all over it. On boot up the screen is a pale grey, the Apple logo appears in the centre with the busy timer underneath. I also get a loading bar for about 20 seconds. This gets to about 20% then disappears. Everything sounds like the machine is booting normally but it just won't progress beyond this point. I have tried holding shift to boot it in safe mode but the same things happens.
If anyone can help point me in the right direction of what I should try next I'd be profoundly grateful!
    Vinny

I knew that before I did this there may be incompatibility problems with this card and Lion on the older Mac Pros,
Although some users have complained of problems, their wounds may be self-inflicted. Use of a non-Apple ATI 5770 or failure to upgrade to at least 10.6.5 are high on the list. The main "issue", if you can even call it that, is the card runs more slowly than its published benchmarks due to PCIe 1 slots in the Mac Pro 1,2 and 2,1.
I also get a loading bar for about 20 seconds. This gets to about 20% then disappears.
That progress bar is indicative of unresolved Hard Drive problems. You need to boot to an alternate source of software (Hold Command-R at startup for Recovery_HD if you are running later than 10.6.8) and check the SMART Status and then select Macintosh_HD or whatever you renamed it and ( Repair Disk ). Repeat until all problems are resolved or it gets stuck. If you need help, copy the EXACT error message back here.

  • Hook up 2 external monitors with Lion OS

How do you get 2 external monitors to work with Lion OS, now that I have installed Lion I can no longer boot my second monitor? I have downloaded DisplayLink's new software but still no luck.  Any ideas?  Thanks

ok so you have a macbook pro with minidisplayport and you can see your desktop on your LG screen?
go to system preferences>displays>arrangement and turn off Mirroring (if it's on). This will give you two separate areas and look similar to this.
If you want quick access to this setting click the "show displays in meny bar"
a little pointer, you see on my setup that there is now one screen with no white bar at the top and one with. This marks where your main screen is (and where the menu bar and dock appear) you can click and drag this white bar to your new LG tv.
Most new tv's have a setting to fit the screen to the tv size. This is a setting that allows for edge to edge persision instead of overlapping which you'll see in older tvs. Take a look at your tv's manual for more about this sort of connection.

  • IMac Reboots Are Needed More Frequently With Lion - Any Preventive Ideas?

My two-year old iMac was totally stable when running Snow Leopard. Since installing Lion I am noticing a new phenomenon. Various tasks I perform with Lion are now causing my computer to freeze from time to time, and requiring a reboot to get things working correctly again. It's turning out that I need to reboot about once a day to keep everything running right, while I used to be able to just put my computer to sleep each day, for weeks at a time, with no need to restart. Is anyone else noticing this? Any ideas?

How much RAM is installed? How much free space do you have on your hard drive? Have you tried reinstalling Lion:
    Reinstalling Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alterhatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

  • How to make Microsoft Office 2004 work with Lion 10.7.5

I just upgraded my iMac with Lion and now have OS 10.7.5, and now I have a message that "You can't open the application Microsoft Word because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."  However, I run Microsoft Word 2008 for Mac on my PowerBook Pro--is it possible to do something to the 2004 edition to make it work with the upgrade?  Or do I have to buy a new Microsoft office program?

Thanks--that's what I was afraid of.
I found the other versions of this question AFTER I posted mine--silly of me...and nice of you not to point it out.
I will look at OpenOffice but I dislike iWork so will likely get the new Microsoft version.
