Sticky ALT key on Curve 8520

Hi
I've been having some issues recently with a buggy ALT key on my keyboard, keeps on self-activating. Think this has something to do with my cellphone pouch having been such a snug fit. I have taken out the key completely, but somehow it STILL keeps on activating the ALT function while busy typing. I have noticed I can get along just fine without it, so is there a way to completely disable the ALT function on the phone short from blowing out the circuit board?

Sorry, no there is not.

  • Curve 8520 Menu key not working! Any workaround for this?

I bought a Curve 8520 from ebay for a bargain price as the menu button (one with blackberry logo on) didn't work. It clicks and makes contact with the metal circle underneath but doesn't open the menu. I've also tried pressing the metal bit below the rubber with a pointy thing, still no joy so I can only assume its a hardware fault. As I don't know the phones history, I have no idea whether it could be water damage, been dropped, keys pressed too hard etc etc...
As I bought it on ebay, I cant take it back to the store. Its incredibly frustrating as it is the most important button on the entire handset. I've tried wiping it and reloading the OS etc, tried every kinda of software workaround I can think of but no joy.
However, I know that the buttons on the side of the phone can be customised to do different functions, so is there a way to duplicate/spoof the menu button to another different button? Or failing that, as the phone supports Java is there some kind of application which lets you re-map the keys to custom specifications?
I've seen many forums and many other threads where people are complaining of the same problem, I'm at my wits end, and to buy the same model brand new is £120, which seems a lot for a phone thats nearly obsolete.
Any pointers, hints, tips, useful shortcuts, or any info on this problem would be greatly appreciated!
    thanks

This same thing as been happening to me! I went to the Verizon store today and talked quickly with a representative and he said "you need to update your software or you need to get a new phone." He was rude and he was wrong about having to update my software because I did that and it says I am up to date.
If anyone else is also having this issue and knows how to solve it WITHOUT talking to the tech people and getting a new phone, please let us know!

  • BlackBerry Curve 8520 stuck in alt mode

My BlackBerry Curve 8520 got wet a few days ago, it's since been left to dry out with all parts removed on top of my Virgin Media box. I checked for damage today & it appears to be working fine, apart from the fact that it's stuck in alt mode.
Any suggestions on how I can get it out of alt mode? The button doesn't appear to be stuck. The 'alt' icon in the corner changes to '123' when I select the left shift button, but when deselected it changes back to alt mode.
I've done a few battery pulls, removed all third party applications & re-installed its OS.
To be able to type normally with letters I have to either hold down the 'return/back' button, 'X' 'V' or 'B' button, or the '$' button. Whilst holding these I can select whether I want 'alt' or not, but then it returns when I let go anyway.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.
Was using the phone just on BB messenger, holding '$' button to type letters & the alt mode went off on its own! Hope it doesn't come back now!

    Hi!
When this happened to me, I searched endlessly for a solution but I couldn't find anything that didn't involve going to a repair centre or taking my phone to pieces. I was hoping for a simple solution! I was really frustrated as my phone's relatively new and well looked after and I couldn't do a thing. After about an hour of doing everything I could, it fixed itself and I forgot about it.
Luckily, whwn it happened again I was with my boyfriend who asked me to let him have a look. I was adamant that he wouldn't be able to fix it - I'd tried everything!
When he handed it back to me, no longer stuck on Alt, I was amazed. Now every time it happens I simply press (hard) and hold the Alt button for a second or two and that fixes the problem! Amazing.
I just knew I had to post it on here to save people time, anger and money, so I created an account. Hi!

  • Key Pad Problem with my Curve 8520 & the HIGH COST of owning a BB

I used to keenly watch RIM and its progress and how it created a niche for itself and how it started successfully fighting the goliaths who were entering into this niche.
This love culminated in me buying a Curve 8520  through Airtel, my GSM service provider against the wishes of my wife. I paid a huge (per my standards) Rupees (Rs) 12500 for the instrument.
This Monday, while I was responding to a text message I realised that 2 of the keys ( R & H)  are not responding. I thought this is a temporary glitch and I switched off and switched on to realise that this has not changed. Added to the problem was that the faulty key is part of the PIN and the device cannot be activated.
I contacted my service provider who quoted  Rs 7000 for repairing the key. Since I am maintaining a strict diet and a healthy lifestyle I did not get a cardiac arrest though I could feel a numbness in my head when I heard the estimate.
When I told the person on the other side of the phone that this is unfair...He also agreed and said that many customers have complained about the high cost of ownership and that RIM might reduce their prices in Jan 2012.. But I can't hold on without using the instrument till jan 2012
Now I remember that my car (Ford Fiesta) was also bought during the same month as my BB phone. Let me confess that I have not spend even Rs 3000 on maintaining that car so far despite me driving  80 kilometers 5 days a week..
    My Request:
Sorry for the rambling...Coming to my request.
I cannot afford to spend Rs 7000 for a repair and I expect RIM to do this free (why should key pad of a carefully used phone fail in 14 months) or a maximum of Rs 500. While I love the features and by now I am sort of addicted to this pet of mine, I am also practical enough to realise that I should not spend out of my means.....So I will have to switch back to a normal phone....
Is there any other way out ?
    Regards
    Rajesh
    Chennai, India

OK, it may not be a powered USB socket on the PC. You will need to check you have the right driver. One way to check the connection is in the settings in the BB under memory there is a mass storage mode support which needs ot be on and the auto enable mass storage mode when enabled when connected. This will usually allow you to see the BB like a external hard drive or camera in windows explorer when you connect it.
If that fails check in the PC device manager for an appropriate device with a problem - usually has a yellow exclamation mark next to it

Hi and Welcome to the Community!!
There's pretty much no diagnosing those -- they are the equivalent of the random errors in Windows for which tracing the root cause is fruitless. Basically, these are the last out in the programming code -- some event occurred for which there is no handler in the code. The fix is a code update that handles the event...but, again, knowing what the event is is pretty much impossible. So, there are a few things to try:
Sometimes, the code simply becomes corrupt and needs to be refreshed -- just like a reboot:
Anytime random strange behavior or sluggishness creeps in, the first thing to do is a battery pop reboot. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes. See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
If it won't boot up cleanly, then you may need to try Safe Mode:
KB17877 How to start a BlackBerry smartphone in safe mode
There might be an updated code set from the carrier -- check them via this portal:
     http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
The toughest possible cause is a badly behaving app. To find it, there are a couple of options. One is to see if you can read the log file:
Go to the home screen. Hold down the "alt" key and type 'lglg'. (You will not see anything while you type). This will bring up the log file. Scroll down (probably many pages) untill you see a line that says 'uncaught execption'. Click on this line. The name of the app will be in the info. Alternative methods for bringing up the logs are in this KB:
KB05349How to enable, access, and extract the event logs on a BlackBerry smartphone
The other method is to remove apps one at a time, waiting a while in between (I usually recommend a week), until the problem ceases...thereby discovering the offending app. Still another method is to reload the BB OS cleanly, leaving some time between adding other apps onto the BB so as to be able to determine exactly which one is the cause.
Good luck and let us know!

    I do indeed.
This what I did to completely wipe my BB. I wrote this before starting and printed it off.
If your device is functioning, perform a backup now if you haven't already done so saving the file to a place and in a name that you can easily locate on computer.
I then uninstalled DTM and then deleted all other references to BB/Rim in Windows Explorer thus removing the OS for the BB from the computer in order to ensure that the version I would reinstall would be a brand new downloaded version.
Get the latest Desk Top Software
    http://us.blackberry.com/apps-software/desktop/?CPID=OTC-DSKTPSW&cp=OTC-DSKTPSW
and install it on the computer.
Get the correct latest version of the OS
    http://us.blackberry.com/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
    and save it to computer.
To erase all the data on your BlackBerry device, complete the following steps. This option is available with
BlackBerry Device Software 3.8 and later.
    1. In the device Options, click Security.
If you are using BlackBerry Device Software 4.1, click Security Options > General Security.
    2. Click the trackwheel and select Wipe Handheld.
    3. Click Continue.
    4. Type “blackberry”. All the data on the BlackBerry device is erased.
On some new versions of BlackBerry software, the menu navigation is slightly different.
    1. Go to Options.
    2. Select Security Options.
    3. Select General Settings.
    4. Click the Menu key.
    5. Select Wipe Handheld.
    6. Click Continue.
    7. Type “blackberry”. All the data on the BlackBerry device is erased.
Launch the new Desk Top Software on the computer
    1. Connect your device to your computer.
    2. On the home screen of the BlackBerry® Desktop Software, click Update my device.
    3. Do one of the following:
    * To download an update, click Get update.
    * To view other available versions of the BlackBerry Device Software, click View other versions. If applicable, click another version. Click Install.
Ensure the new OS is the one you prevously downloaded.
Do not disconnect the device until the whole process is completed and the device has rebooted.
After 10 minutes reboot again by removing the battery whilst powered-on and leave it out for a couple of minutes.
Leave it again for 10 minutes. You should now have a fully functioning BB!

  • Memory clean up problem with the curve 8520.

I bought a blackberry curve 8520 smartphone outside india was working on some settings today after which i locked my phone as usual. However, there was message which said 'automatic memory cleanup in progress. kindly wait for a few minutes.' Well i have waited for about 6 hours now but the device is still hung!!! All i can see is a white screen with a small clock like thing in the middle. I have also taken out the battery and SIM card twice and connected it to the laptop and tried using desktop manager but nothing has helped! the phone keeps going off and a red light comes on but there seems to be nothing else happening! guide me to restore it to normal

Youy say you locked it, was it with a password?
If it is a password did you think it was numbers and not letters? Remember you have to hold alt key for numbers. The PIN on the box is a ID for the device. It has nothing to do with a device password. Just like a MAC address on a network card.

  • Problems Setting up Email on Curve 8520

I'm not able to set-up email on my new curve 8520. I know that other people have posted about it before, but I still can't seem to get it working!
I have BIS and have already created a Blackberry ID. Whenever I go to email setup, the only option I'm presented with is "I want to create or add an email address" and when I click next it says "After you click Next teh Blackberry Internet Service setup application opens. After you finish setting up yruo email press the menu key and click close". On the next page , I'm asked for my username and password, and when I fill it in, I always get:
"The information you provided is incorrect. Retype your user name and pasword."
I know that my username and password are correct, as I've double checked them in BlackBerry App World, so the issue has to be coming from somewhere else.
I've contacted Vodafone several times, and RIM but no one has been able to give me a solution for this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Heathermac, the username and password for setting up your email on your BIS account is NOT the same as your BlackBerryID... two very different and totally separate things.
You might want to make your BIS login the same as your BlackBerryID, that would be convenient and a good idea, but they are not the same. They are set up differently, and one does not carry over to the other.

  • Need Urgent Help with Curve 8520 Backup

Help urgently. I need to backup my Curve but the BB manager would not accept my pin. I am keying it in but the cursor is not showing any sings that it is being typed in.  The phone is not accepting the password and it is one try away from cleaning the phone. I need to backup before that happens

Are you typing in your PN or your Password? If you're connected to the BlackBerry Desktop Software, you should be entering the device security password.
Often users who have multiple numerals in their password will only press the ALT key for the first numeral and not those following, so for instance, if your password were "1234", you might have been pressing "Alt 1234" on the device, which makes the actual password to be "1ers".
Does that make sense? Does it sound familar to your usage?
So check the way you enter your password on the device... do you think you are entering multiple numbers but actually are not?

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
    Please refer to this:
    KB05305Localization support for BlackBerry smartphones
It all depends on the exact BB OS package you have installed to your BB.
At the top of each device forum, there should be some "sticky" threads that discuss the OS levels available for many models. If they include your model, then please use those as reference as you proceed. Otherwise, you will have to dig through the official download portal for OS packages for your model:
    http://us.blackberry.com/support/downloads/download_sites.jsp
From a PC, you can install any compatible (e.g., for your exact BB Model Number) OS package to a BB via this procedure:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-Device-Software/How-To-Reload-Your-Operating-Syste...
Note that while written for "reload" and the Storm, it can be used to upgrade, downgrade, or reload any BB device model -- it all depends on the OS package you download and install to your PC. If that OS package is from a carrier other than the carrier for which your BB was originally manufactured, then delete, on your PC, all copies of VENDOR.XML...there will be at least one, and perhaps 2, and they will be located in or similarly to (it changes based on your Windows version) these folders:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader
    C:\Users\(your Windows UserName)\AppData\Roaming\Research In Motion\BlackBerry\Loader XML
Be sure that you remove, from your PC, any other BB device OS packages as having more than one installed to the PC can cause conflicts with this procedure.
If you are on MAC, you are limited to only your carriers sanctioned OS packages...but can still use any levels that they currently sanction. See this procedure:

  • Why does the ALT key disable mouse clicks on some machines?

I have a drawing program, the main Window of which extends JFrame and contains a Canvas, which extends JPanel. The Canvas has a MouseAdapter, KeyAdapter and JMenuBar. It also has a Tools palette, which extends JDialog and has Buttons, which extend JToggleButtons.
One button is called Zoom. After pressing this button, you can Zoom In and Zoom Out by clicking the mouse on a point of the illustration. It differs from pressing Ctrl Plus and Ctrl Minus, because the point where you click is kept in place, and only all the other points move.
Zooming In is done by clicking the mouse and Zooming Out is done by pressing the ALT key and clicking the mouse. The Zooming In works on all computers, but for some strange reason, the Zooming Out doesn't work on all computers. The computer where it doesn't work, after pressing the ALT key and clicking the mouse, it does not recognize the mouse click, and never reaches the mousePressed method in my debugger.
The computer where it doesn't work has the Windows XP Professional operating system. But some computers where it does work have the same operating system. The problem also does not depend on the keyboard or mouse, because I tried a different keyboard and mouse, and it still didn't work.
I wonder if the reason why it doesn't work on some computers has to do with that the ALT key is also used differently (which might depend on the operating system)? Pressing the ALT key and clicking the mouse Zooms In a picture by keeping the point in place and only moving all the other points
I do not want to use a different key, since one release of my program is a plugin for Photoshop, and Photoshop also uses the ALT key to achieve the same thing.
Thanks for checking on this! I will appreciate your help!

Ok, I did apply KeyBindings. Since the AnanyaCurves class extends JFrame, I couldn't apply KeyBindings there, but I could apply KeyBindings to my CurveCanvas class, which extends JPanel, which extends JComponent. However I still have my first two problems:
    1) After pressing the ALT key, clicking the mouse doesn't get recognized. You never reach the mousePressed method, where it's supposed to exit the program.
    2) After opening a menu, such as the Nothing menu by pressing ALT and N, pressing a key which is not an accelerator key of a menu doesn't get recognized, such as pressing the E key. You never reach the actionPerformed method of the exitF action, where it's supposed to exit the program.
Here is my SSCCE with the KeyBindings:

In the getInputMap method I was trying to use the condition WHEN_IN_FOCUSED_WINDOW, hoping that the bound key would be recognized, but it didn't work. And, by the way, I still used the KeyAdapter so that the alt attribute of AnanyaCurves can be set to false when the ALT key is released.
I will appreciate your help very much! Thanks for your time!

  • I cant download anything frm my bb curve 8520

Haai ppl,pls help me here everytime when I try to download on my bb 8520 it always fails nd its something new,I don't knw what to do now.

    Hello!
Not knowing more (e.g., the error message when it fails may have helped), I suggest that you clear the AppWorld application cache:
    1. Open App World
    2. Go to My World
    3. Follow one (and only one!) of these steps:
3a. For keyboard-based BB's -- Hold down the ALT key and then press, in sequence R, then S, then T
3b. For Touch Screen Only BBs -- Hold the num-lock (!?123) button so it locks and then press, in sequence 3, then 4, then (
    3c. For newer (e,g., OS6 and 7) BB's, see this KB:
KB24714 How to clear the BlackBerry App World cache
    4. AppWorld should close.
    5. If your BB locks after issuing the cache clear, perform a battery pull reboot
    6. Return to AppWorld/MyWorld (it may be sluggish while it re-synchronizes).
If step (4) does not happen as listed, then the clear cache did not work.
Hopefully it'll work for you! If not, please do tell us the exact and complete error message when you try installing apps from AppWorld.
Good luck and let us know!
