Sticky Keys and Universal Access

Hello there folks,
I have just bought a new 20" Intel iMac, I'm running 10.4.6 with all the software updates, updated firmware et al.
One of my favorite features of Mac OS X are the sticky keys, they help people with reduced hand mobility use the keyboard.
Thing is... Every time I restart my computer it deselects the option "sticky keys ON" and I have to select it again at every restart. This did not happen on my old Dual USB iBook... I could restart and the sticky keys would still be selected.
Any suggestions why this is happening? I've tried several times and the stituation keps repeating itself.
Thanks in advance to everyone with any suggestions.
iMac 20" (Intel).   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I've had this exact same problem with my MacBook Pro.
If I logout/login, the setting is retained. If I
restart and login, Sticky Keys is inactive. If I
examine my
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.universalaccess.plist
efore going into the Universal Access preference
pane, "stickyKey" is set to "Yes". But when I
examine the setting in the preference pane, it's
shown as "off."
That's intersting, I wonder if maybe the issue will be resolved with a software update. So, we now know the problem is present in the MacBookPro as well as an iMac. Thanks for your imput, let's hope we get a satisfying answer from someone soon.

  • Would like to get iSight, iChat and Universal Access to work together

Problem: family member with age-related macular degeneration, form not presently curable. Avid reader, feels isolated unable to do so. Due to age and related problems he's very confused trying to use Universal Access (UA) on ANY size Mac screen, situation in which I suspect he's far from being alone; I also find UA extremely cumbersome and almost unworkable.
Proposed solution: would like to procure him a second, external iSight camera, mount it on a (powerful) light stand next to a 20" iMac, have that contraption positioned over various paper documents which I propose to then magnify and display on the Mac.
iChat, unlike PhotoBooth, does not have the ability to flip images and thus render text readable. Also, zoom on iChat inadequate. PhotoBooth use (taking images, flipping, etc) very cumbersome; also, cannot seem to be able to zoom.
Dedicated CCTV units on the market accomplishing simple video magnification seem outrageously overpriced ($3-4000) and not sure if they have their own unknown issues. They would not afford the potential flexibility of a Mac, accomplishing so many other potential tasks.
Proposed solution would seem to offer a wealth of possiblities if someone may have an idea how to tie it all together. Anybody?

Thanks for the tip about QuickTime pro.
I think rather than moving the iSight camera down or up to adjust magnification, that you use Zoom instead.
Zoom is a lot more user friendly with something like the PowerMate. The hot keys for adjusting magnification are just a little too obscure and awkward for my tastes, but having a dedicated knob takes care of that. We use a single press to toggle inverse on and off. A press and hold to activate/deactivate Zoom altogether. Press and spin to adjust contrast.

  • Disable shortcut keys for Universal Access

At our school we have a bit of an issue with students using keyboard shortcuts to set the Universal Access options (usually to Black on White, but also Zoom and VoiceOver), which freaks out the next student using the computer. I'd like to disable the shortcut keys for those settings. Are there ARD Unix commands that would do it?

    Hello Francois,
Thank you for your fast reply!
I tried your recommendation, but got the following result:
When I have a label of "& OK" with the blank symbol as ALT-255, the Button in the Alert Box still has the focus. It seems as if there now is a blank in front of the OK (which is underlined). This does not really solve my issue, because the Button still has the focus and that should not be. The best solution for the user would be if he only could accept the message with a mouse klick.
    Is there an other suggestion?
    Thank you so much!

  • Help! I had a spill, sticky keys, and now unresponsive keyboard.

A little over a week ago someone spilled some tea on my MBP. I immediately turned it off turned it upside down an left it alone for about an hour. It was working fine after, just a few sticky keys, most of which was the space key. A friend recommended taking a q-tip dipping in rubbing alcohol and rubbing it around the sticky keys because it had a low evaporation temperature and that it soak up the remaining liquid. I tried a few times and it worked, but certain keys, mostly my space key just got stick again. I tried earlier today and may I over did it a little and spilled a bit of the rubbing alcohol on the keyboard and track pad. I turned it off and left alone for a bit. I restart my MBP; I heard a weird beeping with a blank screen. I restart again, everything seems to be working fine. Now the keyboard is not responding and the track pad assumes that I'm always right-clicking.
I'm not all that tech-savvy, and I rather not try to take it apart myself to try and fix with some online manual. Is there anything that I can do before I just go to the Mac store and have them look at it?

No, there probably isn't anything else you can or should do — your cleaning efforts have put paid to what was probably already a dire situation. Just take it in to be repaired, and brace yourself for a bill that could be anywhere between $350 and $1000+.

  • Spilled coffee, like a fool I got careless and spilled coffee on my lighted, macbook pro keyboard. How do i get a few sticky keys and a sticky spacebar to loosen up? Safely that is.

I know better but did a dumb thing. Can I open the case and do anything on my own? Thankfully only the spacebar, the comma and the period keys are really sticky. The touch pad seems fine and everything works. Thanks in advance.

    Turn it off.
    Unplug from the wall.
Have the Genius Bar look at it with their full experience.
Do not be surprised if they give you an estimate that is very high.
Fluids and MBPs do not mix.
    Sorry.

  • Groups having which folders and universe access in a System

    Hi All,
I have requirement as need to fetch data each group having access to which folders and which universe (if any). Can anyone assists me to write q query for the same.
    For Example :
One group having access to which reporting folders and which universes. As our system has nearly 150 groups and more than 500 groups and many universe. Manually giving access of each group and checking the access from infoview is TDS Task.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sambasiva

Although, I suppose it'd be better off to just get a 570 at that point. The price would be about the same and would perform up to par with the 6870, while having CUDA/Folding support. Still curious if it's possible.

  • Being disabled I use sticky keys and since Firefox 28 (even after Reset) the Alt key doesn't work as a sticky key and Ctrl fires twice eg. Ctrl-v copies twice.

This still happens after upgrading to FF 29.
    I have a 64bit Windows 7 system.
Initially, it seemed to be OK but after only a few minutes it was back to this behaviour.
    Other symptoms:
    1. When I also have Accessibility Mouse Keys enabled, while typing it automatically switches the default click button to the Right button
    2. Ctrl-t inserts 2 tab pages and Ctrl-w closes two!
    3. everything works fine if used as normal ie. hold the Ctrl or Alt down while pressing the action letter..
Running in Safe mode with no extensions didn't help neither did using after Reset

From your System Details, it looks like user.js is currently active in Firefox. The user.js file is only present if you or other software has created this file and normally it wouldn't be there.
You can delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release. You can get to the profile folder below:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory > Show Folder
    or
*Go to '''about:support''' and click Show Folder next to Profile Directory.

  • Office and Universal Access

For some reason, when zoomed in and inverted while using Microsoft Office menus, Dashboard displays. This occurs without hitting the Dashboard shortcut keys or navigating the mouse to that corner of the screen. Annoying but livable problem.

Just send the bold text, they'll understand it's bout time.
    Textedit->preferences->Open and Save->Change encoding
The font must be UTF-8, when you select UTF-8 to save HTML files in txt editor.
Open your font editor->preferences->deselect automatic font activation
    Fonts->change->special characters->select (hover over) a character->check the character's encoding.
    UTF-8=UTF-8 and UTF-8 only.

  • Mighty Mouse, Programmable Buttons, and Universal Access

I give up. I asked the folks at the Apple Store if I could program the Mighty Mouse such that one of the "primary" buttons could perform a "double-click" and the other "primary" button perform a "single-click" (i.e., so I don't have to push my finger down twice to both select and open an item). I was told the MM was "fully programmable" but if I can't make the thing do that, I wouldn't call that "fully" programmable. Not good for those of us with severe hand and arm problems and any hand surgeon, PT, OT, and ergonomist will tell you that this is a big deal - all the clicking and finger pushing.
Maybe I'm not seeing something or some way to do this, please advise. I have a Kensington old wired mouse recommended by many ergonomists and PTherapists for this reason but thought that with the advent of Apple's new MMouse, Apple would have thought of this and allowed for such programmability in this new mouse. Too bad... I'll likely have to return it unless one of you can tell me how to program one of those buttons to do the 'double-clicking' for me for the price of 1 click.

Can it be programmed, though, such that one click on an item will both select and open it? Please let me know. It seems impossible to get answers to this question from mouse manufacturers. I have now waited almost a week for Kensington to answer me even after calling and talking to a supposed "technician".

  • Universal Access Mouse Keys Double Click Broken In Lion

    Hi,
Lion has made a couple of changes to the Universal Access Mouse Keys, BUT...
You can no longer double click with the 5 key...
This is a HUGE problem for users reliant on this to counter RSI problems.
    To reproduce:
In Universal Access, toggle Mouse Keys to 'On'.  Open a text document, hover the cursor over a word, and double click using the number pad 5 key.
Prior to Lion this selected the word.  In Lion this is no longer happens.
I am using an Apple keyboard with number pad and a MacBookPro.
    Please re-instate this functionality.
    Regards,
    Rob.

This was fixed in 10.7.2 or 3 from memory, but returned in 10.8 and remains in 10.8.2.
I use Keyboard Maestro to map F17 on my keyboard to double-click, Ctrl+F17 to triple-click

When holding down the 'command' key for a few seconds, the Universal Access panel appears.  How can I stop this?

It is a panel that pops up and the heading on the panel is 'Universal Access', it is actually just an image of a panel, you can't access it.  I have checked keyboard shortcuts and none of them are assigned to the command key only

Can someone help me?How do I take the zoom feature off my MacBook Pro? I have already went to System Preferences and turned "zoom" off in the Universal Access. I saw where someone said to use THREE fingers to double click... ??? Double click what? And 3 fingers?

What really cheeses me off here is that Apple isn't allowing users enough customization.  With each update of iTunes (and the OS and iOS) we're forced to give up something that worked well for the way we want to use the app and make do with fewer (and lamer) options.  If Apple keeps this up, they're going to start losing customers fast.  I mean if this isn't fixed soon, I'm pretty sure I'm going to give up on iTunes, and then I'll probably go ahead and get a Galaxy when I need to replace my iPhone.
What I don't understand about how they won't let users delete the list of available podcasts now is why?  How is this making it a better program?  I can understand that not all users are capable enough to right-click on a feed and select "Show all available episodes", so I can see why they want the complete list to be the default (and, surprise, it already was).  But to not give users the option to delete that list?  It's inconsiderate because it makes navigating feeds with a large back catalogue really frustrating.  I'm flabbergasted that no one at Apple considered all the podcast feeds that keep hundreds of episodes available when they removed this feature.  It smacks of rank incompetence.
What improvement were they trying to make here anyway?  There was nothing wrong to my mind about how podcasts were managed in previous versions.  Whatever improvement they were trying to make here, they should have realized that many users would at least want the option to keep things the way they were.
And reverting to a previous version is no solution.  I can't sync my iPhone with the new iOS without this update, and (while I do have some issues--specifically how you can't play podcasts in the Music app anymore) I do like the new iOS.
