Sticky keys

HP Pavilion 17 Notebook
F3S45AV
I am having an issue with this brand new laptop. During setup it was evident that there was an issue with the D key. You don't even really have to press it for it to register and if you do press it, 3 or 4 keystrokes are registered. Some keys don't register without multiple presses. It is highly annoying and I am extremely irritated.
This gift for my son's birthday was literally opened a few hours ago. I am not exactly sure how this escaped QC testing before it was shipped.
Any thoughts on what I can do?

  • Has anyone figured out how to get speech recognition working with sticky keys enabled on mountain lion?

I'm trying to use speech recognition to input text on my iMac running the latest mountain lion, 10.8.3.
    I have sticky keys enabled.
When I try to start speaking by pressing the function key twice nothing happens. I can only get it to work if I disable sticky keys.
The same problem occurs with all the other modifier keys as shortcut, they do not work with sticky keys.
When I try to select a different shortcut, I am unable to select a two key combination, but am limited to one.
If I select the F6 key, or any other single key, I am able to start speech recognition. However the second time that I press the key, it does not stop recognition and process my words. Instead, it restarts the recognition.
Has anyone figured out how to get speech recognition working with sticky keys enabled?
Or a way to get an individual key shortcut to start on the first press and process it on the second?
Or a way to get key combinations to work, as specified by the help:
    Dictation On and Off
    To use Dictation, click On.
When you’re ready to dictate text, place the insertion point where you want the dictated text to appear and press the Fn (function) key twice. When you see the lighted microphone icon and hear a beep, the microphone is ready for you to speak your text.
    Shortcut
By default, you press the Fn (Function) key twice to start dictation. If you like, you can choose a different shortcut from the menu.
To create a shortcut that’s not in the list, choose Customize, and then press the keys you want to use. You can press two or more keys to create your shortcut.

I noticed with version 10.8.4 of OS X that I am now able to select F6 to activate, and the return key to complete the speech recognition. This is still different than the description of how these should function that's included in the help, but at least it's an improvement.

  • Sticky keys after spilling a drink on Equium A200-196

I recently spilt a drink on my laptop i have removed the keyboard but am unabal to remove the back plate from the keys.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how i might clean the sticky keys or is it a question of purchasing a new keyboard?

    > Its basically a wafer thin metallic plate that remains attached to the keys once you remove the keyboard, it would appear the keys are connected to it in some way, i wasnt sure if it was possible to separate them?
Dont think you can remove it. As I said only the keycaps are removable.

  • Using Sticky keys interfere with iTunes

    Hello,
I use sticky keys functions (system preferences / Universal Access / Keyboard).
I noticed this strange behaviour, if itunes is open but music is stopped and a song is selected in itunes, pressing the apple (command) key starts the playing.
Some times I found tha pressing play on itune does not start the playing then pressing the command key unlocks the problem.
    Is this a bug?
    Best regards
    Paolo

That picture looks just like mine does with no music playing.  I don't know what else to suggest.  You might try deleting the iTunes preferences file.  I would also check-mark that box in the Keyboard settings anyway, then un check it and see if that resolves it, the idea being that you're forcing the OS to write to the Keyboard preferences file a couple of times and making sure the data is set correctly.  I'm grasping at straws now.
My experience has been, the media keys work no matter what windows is at the front.  However, the space bar only starts and stops the musci if iTunes is the front window.
Beyond that, good luck.  Maybe talk to an Apple store genius?

    Hi, Britni.
Apple can replace the keyboard. If your MacBook is still covered by AppleCare Protection Plan, the repair may even be free.

  • Sticky Keys and Universal Access

    Hello there folks,
I have just bought a new 20" Intel iMac, I'm running 10.4.6 with all the software updates, updated firmware et al.
One of my favorite features of Mac OS X are the sticky keys, they help people with reduced hand mobility use the keyboard.
Thing is... Every time I restart my computer it deselects the option "sticky keys ON" and I have to select it again at every restart. This did not happen on my old Dual USB iBook... I could restart and the sticky keys would still be selected.
Any suggestions why this is happening? I've tried several times and the stituation keps repeating itself.
Thanks in advance to everyone with any suggestions.
    iMac 20" (Intel).   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I've had this exact same problem with my MacBook Pro.
If I logout/login, the setting is retained. If I
restart and login, Sticky Keys is inactive. If I
    examine my
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.universalaccess.plist
efore going into the Universal Access preference
pane, "stickyKey" is set to "Yes". But when I
examine the setting in the preference pane, it's
    shown as "off."
That's intersting, I wonder if maybe the issue will be resolved with a software update. So, we now know the problem is present in the MacBookPro as well as an iMac. Thanks for your imput, let's hope we get a satisfying answer from someone soon.

  • Sticky Keys keeps turning off after every restart

the Sticky Keys option in the universal access prefs pane keeps turning off after every restart. how can i fix this?

It seems to be a common problem in the OS that when you restarts some of the settings get reset. For me it happens with the screeen dimming before sleep and the double click using 2 fingers and maybe others that I don't know about. I am hoping that its fixed in 10.4.7 which should be out within a week or so.

  • Using dictation with sticky keys

    Hello,
I am new to this support community.  I use the sticky keys function (I am a quadriplegic) and now with the dictation feature I no longer need to open my Dragon dictation in order to dictate something short.  My problem is that in order to enable dictation I need to hit the fn or cmd key but with sticky keys active, the shortcut does not work and the only key I can assign is one of the arrow keys! HELP!!!

If you can access the Edit menu then you may be able to use DIctation from there?

  • Xfce 4.10 sticky keys enable keybind

Hi, sometimes when I randomly hit some "unknown" keybind and I enable (by mistake) sticky keys. Do you know what is that keybind? There is no "sticky keys" keybind option in official Xfce "Keyboard shortcuts" table. I've searched "everywhere" but just cannot find it.
    Thanks

It does seem to be an issue if you are using GDM + Xfce combination.
There is someone on the ubuntu forum who had the same problem, look at the end of the page for a workaround .
Basically you need to use xkbset from AUR, it does work for me so hope it works for you guys.
You turn sticky keys off by using:
    $ xkbset -a
As the ubuntu user suggests, set this up so it gets autorun when you login to Xfce

  • Help! I had a spill, sticky keys, and now unresponsive keyboard.

A little over a week ago someone spilled some tea on my MBP. I immediately turned it off turned it upside down an left it alone for about an hour. It was working fine after, just a few sticky keys, most of which was the space key. A friend recommended taking a q-tip dipping in rubbing alcohol and rubbing it around the sticky keys because it had a low evaporation temperature and that it soak up the remaining liquid. I tried a few times and it worked, but certain keys, mostly my space key just got stick again. I tried earlier today and may I over did it a little and spilled a bit of the rubbing alcohol on the keyboard and track pad. I turned it off and left alone for a bit. I restart my MBP; I heard a weird beeping with a blank screen. I restart again, everything seems to be working fine. Now the keyboard is not responding and the track pad assumes that I'm always right-clicking.
I'm not all that tech-savvy, and I rather not try to take it apart myself to try and fix with some online manual. Is there anything that I can do before I just go to the Mac store and have them look at it?

No, there probably isn't anything else you can or should do — your cleaning efforts have put paid to what was probably already a dire situation. Just take it in to be repaired, and brace yourself for a bill that could be anywhere between $350 and $1000+.

  • "Sticky" keys on apple's wireless keyboard when typing on my ipad.

I am using apple's wireless keyboard on my ipad. It has worked fine for four months but then last night the keys got "sticky", typing any letter I'm hitting continually until I hit escape. Does anyone know how to set it back to normal typing?
The on screen keyboard works fine (I'm using it now), but when i switch to the wireless this happens:
    I   cannnnn't't't    tttttyppeeeeeeee      noormallyyyyyyy...............
I tried changing batteries but that didn't help either. Would really appreciate comments/help!!

Do you have a computer with Bluetooth that you can test the keyboard with?
Have you tried going into Settings on the iPad and under Bluetooth tried forgetting the device? You should see the keyboard listed as a device. Pressing the arrow in the blue circle should present an option to forget the device.

  • Spilled coffee, like a fool I got careless and spilled coffee on my lighted, macbook pro keyboard. How do i get a few sticky keys and a sticky spacebar to loosen up? Safely that is.

I know better but did a dumb thing. Can I open the case and do anything on my own? Thankfully only the spacebar, the comma and the period keys are really sticky. The touch pad seems fine and everything works. Thanks in advance.

    Turn it off.
    Unplug from the wall.
Have the Genius Bar look at it with their full experience.
Do not be surprised if they give you an estimate that is very high.
Fluids and MBPs do not mix.
    Sorry.
