Sticky Layer Move Redraw

New computer, same software (AE CS6).   This laptop has an Nvidia GeForce GT 750M in it, running Windows 8.1.  Nvidia driver 9.18.13.3221.
If I start to move a layer it won't move for a brief moment - but then then layer "catches up" to where I've dragged it to/where the cursor is.  Then, with the mouse button pressed, the redraw is zippy speedy so long as the layer is moving, but if I pause and stop moving the layer - mouse button still pressed - it sticks again when I restart moving the layer.     It's like 1 thru 10 but instead of 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10     the layer goes  1........6 7 8 9 10, skipping 2 3 4 and 5, which is terrible when you're making small adjustments.
Suspecting switchable graphics I disabled the onboard Intel graphics in the Device Manager.
I went to the Nvidia settings and manually set it to always use the Nvidia card.  No luck.
Anyone else experience this?  My old laptop / Nvidia combination didn't have this problem.  Everything else on the laptop is zoomzoom with the 16GB RAM, SSD drive etc.
Thought there might be a "how After Effects uses OpenGL" etc etc etc setting in AE I'm missing.

And this happens with the slider scrubbers too - not just the move "tool" in the Comp viewer.
For instance, I just went to scrub spin dial in a Rotation value and as I rotated the layer, same thing - sticky stuck at the start and then fine fine fine so long as I kept dragging but then as soon as I slowed down enough or paused, the layer stuck again as it rotated in the viewport.   It's like it's quantum jumping - it's just popping to a position / rotation instead of travelling there...

    I have identified the keyboard shortcuts responsible for the layer shift/duplication and was able to record an action.
    The idea is to setup a Javascript alert when the layer moves or duplicates using the Scripts Events Manager Photoshop Event dialog.
    I have not been able to successfully add the Photoshop Event using the Event ID code 'copy' and ‘move’ listed in the Adobe Photoshop CC 2014 Javascript Scripting Reference guide. 
    The Adobe scripting listener plugin does not record the layer movement and layer duplication events.
    When I replicate the problem the History pallet registers both, the layer copy and layer move events as a ‘move’ history state.
    Other than Javascript Scripting Reference guide Is there a way to find out the exact event Id for a layer move and layer duplicate events?

    sorry, I wasn't aware you're using a mac. I know that in Windows, you can run additional software that will send you an alert every time you accidentally press those keys. It can even block the layer shift/duplication if you choose. I've just tried a sample here on my system and it works perfectly - every time cmd (in my case ctrl) is pressed, a tooltip at the mouse cursor will pop up, saying "CTRL is pressed". Additionally, whenever I press ctrl+option+drag, the tooltip instead says "Layer has been moved". I'm positive this can also be done on the mac.
    you should look into a key remapping program for the mac that resembles AutoHotKey for Windows (which is what I'm using). It will allow you to send alerts every time you press those key/mousebutton combinations by accident. This is a solution I bet you can take care of outside of Photoshop, meaning that you won't need to rely on javascripting or anything.

    Keyboard Maestro seems to be the best bet but I wouldn't know for sure. Your solution will be in one of those programs for sure.

  • Every time I press the align-center button the layer moves a little more? never centers?

    This doesn't happen all the time, but it happens enough for me to ask. I don't even know what AE is aligning to sometimes. In this one comp, each time I click, the increments in which the layer moves become smaller and smaller, until they don't really move anymore, but are also clearly NOT centered anymore.
    anyone know? probably just missing something in terms of how AE processes alignment in the first place.

    The align feature will align two or more layers but it will not align relative to a comp. Complete info is in the help file.

    Hi. Can someone help me figure out how to make my idvd burn dual layerd movies? I've done everything the same as I always have and it still won't do it. Do I need to buy something other than Sony discs? I'm at my whits end. Any ideas out there?

    Read the intro and the Mac OS X section. When you compose a post, you may add a screen shot by clicking the camera button and following the instructions.
    Under the cricumstances, I think it's better to start a little further back.
    Quit all apps and restart the Mac.
    After you've logged back in, first check how much free disk space you have. In Finder, select your hard disk and choose File > Get Info. Look at the General section (if it's not expanded, click the disclosure triangle to the left of the word "General". Check the figure for "Available". If it's not al least 12GB, you need to clear up disk space. You should have at least 12GB free disk space to proceed.     Choose "Project Info…" from the Project menu. Check the choice for "DVD Type". It should be "Double-Layer (DL) - 7.7GB". If it isn't, make it so. Close the Project Info window.
    Now choose File > Burn DVD… Make sure the DVD you insert is indeed a DL (it should be marked as such, and the label should say something like "8.5GB data").
    If it fails as before, you should return to the project window. This time, choose File > Save as Disc Image… Save it to a convenient location.
    Open Disk Utility. Choose Images > Burn…, select the image saved in the previous step, and try to burn it. If it works, then the problem is with iDVD. (Keep in mind that a DL disc burned with Disk Utility may not work or may cause problems in a DVD player. This is only a test to try to isolate the problem.)
    If it doesn't work with Disk Utility either, then the problem is with the drive or the disc. Reset the SMC and try again.

    If it still doesn't work, try a different brand of discs, from a different manufacturer (and preferably manufactured in a different country).
    If several brands of discs fail, then the problem is likely with the drive. Get a lens cleaning disc and use it to clean the drive. If that still doesn't solve the problem, then it's probable that the drive is damaged and should be replaced. If the drive is old (4–5 years) the likelihood that it's damaged increases.

  • Strange problem undoing a shape layer move in Photoshop CS5

    Hi. I have a strange recurring problem in Photoshop CS5. Basically, it manifests like this:
    I have a shape layer, or several shape layers. I will move the shape with the move tool (usually via holding Ctrl, depending upon which tool is selected). If I then use undo or step backward, the image does not revert properly. It's like there is a discrepancy between the position of the layer mask and what is displayed on screen. Clicking on the vector mask of the shape layer to reveal its outline shows that the shape is where it should be (i.e. in the position it was originally), but the element of the image it represents is somewhere else. Sometimes, if I move a group of such shape layers, the problem seems to affect some of them but not all. Once so far, I have managed to rectify the problem by simply turning off an unrelated layer and turning it on again! Very strange.
    It's a difficult problem to deal with, because it doesn't happen every time. And when it does, it's a case of reverting to a previous save. Luckily I save reasonably often, but it's still an annoying thing to deal with.
    Hope I've described it well enough to understand. Any ideas?
    I'm using CS5 12.0.4. Windows 7 64-bit. Intel i5 2300. Integrated HD2000 graphics with latest drivers.

    I realise I seem to be talking to myself here (perhaps no-one's still using CS5 here, plus it's a fairly specific problem), but I have discovered a factor that makes for repeatable demonstration of this behaviour.
    It appears that the problem I'm having is related to using feathering on vector masks. Create a shape with the pen tool, add an amount of 'feather' in the mask options panel, use the move tool to move the shape and then undo. This displays the problem I'm seeing where the image is not refreshed. I have at least found a way to workaround the issue for now. Simply changing the feathering amount updates the image to how it should be.
    I'm glad that I can at least continue to use CS5, because I'm totally content with its functionality for my uses, and an upgrade seemed overkill (not to mention having to adjust to the changes made in CS6+ versions).
    Perhaps there is still a cure for this bug somewhere. I will keep looking, and update this thread if I find it, in the hope that it may help someone else out there with the same problem.

  • Cam in a separate group above a baked layer moves baked layer also?

    Hi Guys
    In Motion 3 I have baked a group which contains lots of camera movement and moving objects.
    I created a totally separate 3d group with its own camera contained within its group.
    I placed the new group on the layer above the baked layer.
    However, whenever I move the active camera for the new group, it causes the baked layer to also similarly move.
    I want the baked layer to remain as it is, and instead be able to swoop my camera around text only in the new layer.
    Any tips about how I might overcome this please?

    Make sure your baked layer is inside a 2D group. Then the camera will not affect the layer.

  • Moving an image on a different layer moves other objects in another layer?

    I've got two layers (this happens with only one layer as well). In the first layer I've got an image, some rectangles, and a couple of text boxes. In layer 2 I've only got one image. When I move the image up or down Muse also moves some of the objects in layer 1. How can I prevent this from happening? It's resizing or moving them all out of wack.

    Kindly lock the layer that you are not currently working on, before making edits or moving content in the other layers. (In this case, lock layer 1 before moving objects in layer 2)
    Locking will ensure that you do not accidentally select and edit the objects/layers.

    I want to use as a mask a movie clip that has several layers
    with tweens. Somehow this doesn't work for me - all I see when I
    set this movie clip as mask is one of these layers - the others
    remain invisible. For example, I have two layers - on layer 1, the

    mask is a MC that has several layers with animated (tweened) ovals
    moving in different directions. When I preview the animation, only
    one of these ovals is visible. How can I make it work properly?

    Hi,
    I design a lot of digital products with fixed positioned objects.
    Is there a way of simulating for example a sticky navigation in Photoshop? That would be awesome.
    Just a checkbox saying "Fixed" on each layer or group to make it stick when scrolling thru the design.
    Then everyone would get out of the hassle to build html mockups all the time.

    Yes, there are many examples out there. The first that came to mind was vogue.com.
    To simulate that navigation bar sticking to the top when you scroll, inside the psd as a layer or a group.

    Anyone seen a layer actually shift later in the timeline only when using Compressor? If I export animation, it's fine. If I export to iPod, the layer actually renders about 1 second late. All other video and audio is not affected.

    I don't render to compressor - I output a quicktime, then send that to compressor. Usually because I'm gonna do more than just compress it, but I guess it also gets around any weirdness like you're experiencing...

    It should (note should) stay flagged. You control the flags.

  • Find a specific Sublayer and move to top level layer

    I have a lot of illustrator files that are organized by a template size. The layers are setup so that the top level layer is always Template. However the sublayer I need to move to the top level could be called 42 Pg Border or 30 Pg Border or 24 Pg Border.
    Is there a way for a script to search through the layers and if it finds "42 Pg Border" or "30 Pg Border" or "24 Pg Border" in the sublayer Template it would move it to the top level but if it doesn't see one of those it doesn't give an error?
    I'm still new to scripting so the extent of my knowledge on this is to scan all the layers and unlock them. Then look for a specific layer name. It's the sublayer and moving it to the top level that I am not sure of.

    I am using CS4 on a Windows 64 Bit PC with JavaScript

    OK so that code is really close! I tweaked it a bit. I kept getting an error that said cannot move a locked layer. So I just made a loop to unlock ALL the layers first thing. Then to get rid of some of the "extra" code I wrote I changed this line:

    So now instead of looking for 42 30 24 (and other border templates I may have to add) I just told it to look at the 6 characters at the end of the string (which will always be the word Border).
    OK so now the code runs and does what it is supposed to but I am getting an undefined in my javascript console in extendscript. Any ideas?

  • Photoshop CS3 Move Tool, no longer moves 1 layer...

    I've had no issues with this version of Photoshop until most recently when I go to choose the move tool and I'm on a specific layer that I want to move, I left click like I've always done for years to move it on the canvas and and instead of having that one layer move (on the canvas, not on layers window) it picks up the root group and moves everything. The highlighted (selected) layer also turns to the outer (root) group folder, instead of staying on that layer.
    Did I fat finger three or four buttons to cause this to happen? and if so how do I make that stop, it's sooooo frustrating now... if this isn't the case, anyone know what to do to fix it?

    Ok, got it figured out. sorry I had to ask, but sometimes I just have to ask in order to answer it myself. I had the Auto-Select set for group instead of being unchecked and on layer.
    Guh, that was extremely annoying mistake I made. I haven't been able to update anything and reset everything. haha.

  • Noob Question: Move a layer in the opposite direction of a different animated layer

    So say that I have an icon that I animate on the Y-axis +40px, but instead of trying to hand key the other layer each time, is there an expression I can write to have the other layer move in the opposite Y direction the same amount of units (ex: -40px)?

    You have to define what the y movement is relative to. For example, if you want one layer to mirror another layer's y movement since the first frame, you could do it like this:
    p = thisComp.layer("leader").transform.position;
    value + [0,p.valueAtTime(0)[1] - p[1]]
    If you want to mirror it around a particular reference y value, it would be like this:
    yRef = 540;
    p = thisComp.layer("leader").transform.position;
    value + [0,yRef - p[1]]
    There are other variations/interpretations--it depends on what you're after exactly.
