Still Can't Send Mail--WHY???

I've been reading all the topics related to sending mail from the iPhone. I set up all my email accounts inside Mail (even though I use Entourage) and imported the settings into the phone in iTunes.
I can download and receive mail from all 3 POP accounts and my Yahoo and .mac accounts. No problem. They come in fine. But when I try to reply to any message I get the error "address rejected by server. Placing message in the outbox".
What is wrong? Can someone help? I know the settings are correct. I can send and receive from Mail and Entourage with the exact settings.
Help!
  Mac OS X (10.4.10)

My ISP at home (RCN) blocks port 25 except for smtp.rcn.com. So at home I had my Mac Mail set to use smtp.rcn.com for outgoing mail on all accounts. I synched my iPhone, which copied smtp.rcn.com to the iPhone, and could get and send email at home.
But when I went outside my own wireless, I got exactly the message you are getting. smtp.rcn.com was not accessible from the Edge network. smtp.mac.com was not accessible from my home network. There is nothing in iPhone Settings -> Mail that lets you set the outgoing mail server.
However, smtp.mac.com will also work on ports 587 and 465. Your other mail servers may also work there. Check Yahoo to see what other ports are supported.
The problem you describe, Steve, sounds backwards from mine, but I'm guessing you are on Edge even in your own home - that you haven't joined your iPhone to your home network.
Change your outgoing mail server in Mac Mail (or Entourage) to have :587 at the end of the smtp server that corresponds to that account (e.g. smtp.mac.com:587 for .Mac). Don't use your ISP's smtp server because it won't be available when you travel. Try sending mail.
In iTunes, use the checkbox on the Info screen for your iPhone to force it to overwrite your Mail settings at the next synch. Synch.
Your iPhone should now use the alternate port, which is probably not blocked on the wireless networks you'll travel to and is not blocked on Edge.
Hope this helps. If not, post a reply and I'll try again.

  • Still can't send mail..... post a clear solution here....

I see that this has happenned to others since early last week - think this coincides with when the latest security update came out.
Anywoy, once again, here is the problem.
My Mail.app has been configured to collect and send mail from my pop server ( in the usa), and has done so very successfully for the past few years.
All of a sudden, I can't send emails anymore, it keeps asking me for my password. It is doing this on all computers across my network, which are accessing from various other locations ( 4 computers in 2 locations). Thank God, it continues to work fine with my Mac.com account.
And of course, all works fine when using Entourage, but I have been using Mail.app for several years and would prefer to conitnue to use it.
What can I do? I've read through many threads around the problem, but have yet seen a clear solution that works......
Would like to use this thread if there is a solution that could benefit to the numerous other users that are experiencing the same problem.

    Phil,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
What is the SMTP server you are trying to use as Outgoing Server when sending from your POP account? Although the name might be exactly the same, sending is not done with a POP3 server, but rather with a SMTP server.
Your .mac account is probably using the smtp.mac.com as Outgoing Server -- correct? Since this is an Authenticated server, you are being permitted to send with it, but it would appear to me that the ISP used at your locations is blocking the use of the SMTP chosen for your POP account. Is it separately authenticated -- you can confirm this by whether its name is changed to append your Username to it, or not.
Do you have any Mac, upon which you have not yet set up Entourage to work. If so, please set up this same POP account, and test. My experience, based upon the reports of others, is that when ISP change their policy for Blocking Port 25 to third party, non-authenticated SMTP, those already setup and working, are sort of grandfathered in, and allowed to continue to relay. But some event, such as an update, can cancel the grandfathering.
If the SMTP you are attempting to use is Authenticated, and therefore should probably work if the smtp.mac.com does so, please check the Port it is presented on in the Mail Preferences, and in the preferences of Entourage where that is working.
    More info, please.

  • Can't send mail- password rejected

I just got a new MacBook and after setting up Mail, I can receive emails but I can't send them. I get an error message that reads "The SMTP server “smtpauth.earthlink.net” rejected the password. Please re-enter your password, or cancel." But then when I re-enter the password, it still rejects it. I've read every troubleshooting thing I can find, but nothing will solve this problem. I've checked the outgoing mail server, my user name and password and everything is correct. And I still can't send mail. HELP!

    Hi
You need to check with your ISP whether or not the send mail server (SMTP) requires a password.  Some do, but many do not.  When you know the correct password to send mail, then you need to tell Mail as follows:
Mail menu > Preferences > Accounts > Select the account
Click on the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) combo box, and select Edit SMTP Server List...
In the Account Information tab put the server name
In the Advanced Tab, set up the authentication information from your ISP.
    Good luck

  • Can't Send Mail Via HughesNet SMTP Server

After installing 10.5 I find that I can receive mail from my ISP (HughesNet) but I can't send mail through the smtp server. I've tried every setting possible and even duplicated the settings off my wife's 10.4.10 iMac and I still can't send mail. All I see is that the smtp service is "Offline."
Fortunately, I have a .Mac account so I can send mail using that smtp server. But I'd like to be abel to use my HughesNet server.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

My mom uses RoadRunner by Time Warner. She was able to receive email using Leopard and Mail but not send. SMTP server was the big problem like everyone else here experienced. We finally were able to get it to work using many ideas here. What we did:
    1) Delete com.apple.mail.plist from the User/Library/Preferences folder (BACK UP YOUR EMAIL FIRST)
    2) Open Mail and create a new account but disable the automatic set-up feature, put your info in manually.
    3) Uncheck " Use only this server" from the outgoing mail
    4) Under the Advanced tab on Mail Prefs "port set to 25", Uncheck "SSL" box, and uncheck "Use Authentication"
    5) Now hit Create
It took Mail about 20 minutes to contact the SMTP server, but it did and now I can send and receive Mail without any problems on her computer.

  • Still can't send Gmail!

This is making me crazy. I have a gmail account and receiving mail on my iphone works great. I have tried every fix listed here and through GMail, but I still can't send mail. I get the error message: "the connection to the outgoing server 'smtp.gmail.cm faile.' Any suggestions????

This happened to me as well... I was able to solve it by going into the settings for my GMail account on the iPhone and setting the configuration as follows (my problem was that I didn't specify the proper password for the smtp server):
    Account: On
    *Account Information:*
Name: John Smith (note: enter your own name)
Address: [email protected] (note: enter your full GMail email address)
    Description: GMail
    *Incoming Mail Server:*
    Host Name: pop.gmail.com
User Name: recent:[email protected] (note: enter "recent:" followed directly by your full GMail email address)
Password: password (note: enter your GMail password)
    Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):
    Host Name: smtp.gmail.com
User Name: [email protected] (note: enter your full GMail email address)
Password: password (note: enter your GMail password)
    Advanced Settings:
    Incoming Uses SSL: On
    Outgoing Uses SSL: On
    Authentication: Password
Delete from Server: When removed from Inbox (or your preferred option)
Hope that helps - it works great for me. Only thing that's weird with GMail is the bug where mail you send from this account always shows up in the iPhone inbox. I think Google is working on a fix, but for now, it works fine for me (I just know to delete the mail that comes into my GMail inbox that was sent by me).
    Good luck!

  • Is there a fix for "can't send mail?"

I just spent 4+ hours on this forum and worked through all suggestions I could find - still can't send mail. It happened yesterday afternoon, from one moment to the next - suddenly all my three POP accounts are offline and there was nothing I could do about it. I checked with Entourage, same thing there as well, can't send mail.
I have no idea if this is connected with the problem in many posts about the "can't send mail" issue or not, but at least on the surface it looks like it is.
Any help is appreciated! Thank you.

Yes, there are complaint sites online where I've read hundreds of complaints that trickle in one by one on different dates.
Take a look at this post, and the comments below it:
    http://www.lockergnome.com/usrbingeek/2007/04/12/comcast-blocking-port-25/
This is going to be an ongoing problem for different users, one at a time.
DSL users in my area are going through a similar issue with their CenturyTel email accounts. Over the last two years they have added a new smtp server and some people were transferred immediately to it, and others got added month by month (some were on smtp.centurytel.net while others are on smtpauth.centurytel.net). Then a couple of months ago, they started requiring login and password to the smtp server, but not for all users. I get a few calls a month for the next batch. Centurytel has gone with a 3rd party email hosting company so that they don't have to deal with it.
I'm trying to set up all clients with the latest changes, but they don't always work in advance of the changes. It's hit and miss. CenturyTel has said that they have posted notices on their help site, but who goes there?
Maybe they are just trying to manage their tech support load during changes?

  • Can't send mail - server properly configured and up

I'm unable to send mail. Here's roughly the sequence of events that
    got me where I am:
    1) Connect through a firewall using VPN (the Cisco VPN client)
    over the wireless interface
    2) Compose a message, and click 'Send'
    3) The server is down, so I get the "Can't send e-mail" pop-up
    dialog
    4) Click 'Try later'
    5) Reconnect later while the server is up, and try to send
    6) Still see the "Can't send" pop-up
Steps 3) and 4) happened a lot. In particular, turning on the
wireless interface in order to connect over VPN causes Mail to try
(and fail) to connect to the server.
The server is up; I can reach it with "telnet <server> 25".
Moreover, Mail's own "Connection Doctor" says it's able to connect
    to the server.
This configuration worked until the sequence of events described above,
and nothing on the server side has changed since.
I've tried everything I can think of to get Mail back in a working state.
Notably I've deleted the contents of "Outbox", quit Mail, and then restarted.
I've also deleted and re-created the server configuration, without success.

    Two additional data points:
    1) I found a mail server I could use from outside the firewall.
When I added that server, and closed the VPN session, Mail was
(finally!) able to send. (But see below why you shouldn't rush
    to blame VPN).
    2) When there are two mail servers configured in preferences, the
"Can't send mail" pop-up gives you the list of choices. If you
select an alternate server from the list, the "Try selected
server" button ought to try the new server. Instead, the
pop-up reappears, still complaining about the old server.
As for why I'm not prepared to blame (only) the VPN:
    * Note that the server is perfectly accessible; telnet works,
and Mail's Connection Doctor says the server is up.
    * Point 2) above indicates some problem in Mail with the logic
for retrying access to the failed server.

  • For some reason yesterday and today I can not send mail using the icloud website and help?

From some reason I can not send emails using the icloud website.  Not sure why any help

    Hi there tamarafromdarien,
You may find the troubleshooting steps for iCloud Mail in the article below helpful.
    iCloud: Troubleshooting iCloud Mail
If you can't send mail in OS X Mail
If you receive this alert or a similar alert when sending a message from your iCloud email address in OS X Mail:
“This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered. The reason for the failure is: An error occurred while delivering this message via the smtp server: server name.”
In OS X Mail, choose Preferences from the Mail menu.
Click Accounts in the Preferences window.
Select your iCloud account from the list of accounts.
    Click the Account Information tab.
Choose your iCloud account from the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) pop-up menu. Example: “Derrick Parker (iCloud)”.
Note: The Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) menu also includes an Edit SMTP Server List command. If you choose this command, be aware that the iCloud SMTP server won't be among the servers that can be edited. This is normal.
If you're attaching a large file
Message attachments can't exceed the maximum size allowed by your email service provider or the recipient's email service provider. The maximum size varies by service provider. Try compressing the filebefore sending it, or send your message without the attachment to verify that there are no issues with sending.

  • Using OS Mavericks can't send mail on hotmail?

I can't send mail on hotmail using os x mavericks, why?

I also was having the SMTP (offline) issue for Gmail and Comcast after upgrading to Maverick but not immediately.   I read through all the posts.  I was not seeing a common thread for a solution so I decided to bite the bullet and call Apple(if it costs, it costs).  I set up a call back.  They called me in 15 minutes, set up a view of my screen and proceeded to troubleshoot.  He started by going to "Window" "connection doctor".  Observed the red dots and descriptions as being a username/password issue.  Then went to "mail","Preference", account icon and entered the gmail 2-step verification password generated by Gmail and before clicking done (on the Gmail website),clicked on the "SMTP Mail server" box and chose "edit SMTP server list". In the window that appeared also entered the same Gmail generated password there as well.  We then tested by going to the "Connection Doctor" getting green dots for both incoming and outgoing Gmail entries.  Next test was sending email to myself.  It worked.  We did the corresponding procedure for the Comcast account.  It took 25 minutes and cost nothing.  I was surprised at the price since my iMac is 4 years old.  I hope this lasts and I don't get really good at this procedure.

  • Mail can't send mail on home network

I am trying to help a friend who wants to move from Entourage to Mail. He has a MacBook Pro with 10.6.4 installed and his company uses Exchange 2003. He is moving to Mail due to serious calendar and contact syncing issues through Entourage and his iPhone/iCal/Address Book.
I have setup his Mail account to use IMAP with the Exchange Server. He can receive mail this way, but he cannot send it. Actually he can only send mail when he is at work on his company's network. I have turned off SSL and authentication is through Username and Password.
Funny thing is that Entourage can send and receive mail anywhere he has a connection, but Mail cannot. His company's IT department says that the settings I have in place should work.
How can I further troubleshoot this problem? Is it a server problem? I know 10.6's Mail doesn't support Exchange 2003, but I am not looking for full integration of exchange services.

You may be SOL as you need an SMTP server to send mail and the IT folks may not have it set up. You need a proper SMTP relay to send the mail, period. It doesn't matter what it's called, though convention usually has it set to smtp.example.com. mail.example.com would more often be the address for IMAP or POP connections.
Regarding the inability to send mail from an external network, this is the same problem: You still need an SMTP server to send emails. It's just that the SMTP server on the external network is likely different than the corporate SMTP server. What external network is it, and what is the SMTP server they have set up for machines within their network? Note that many networks don't enable outbound SMTP for random clients due to SPAM reasons.

  • Can´t send mail on any account

    Hi,
Suddenly all of my accounts can´t send mail...
it pops up a window saying mail can´t use this smtp, and it doesn´t matter what I choose for selected server, nothing works.
And if I change the outgoing mail server settings in preferences it does not change in the pop up.
    I did not change anything.
I have tried to start new account but nothing works.

    Gunz,
For your .mac account, if you are using the smtp.mac.com as the Outgoing Server, change the Port to be Port 587, and test. Although you are using many different venues, more and more ISPs are blocking Port 25 for all but their own SMTP. Are the other accounts unrelated to your ISP? If so, their SMTP may need to be presented either on Port 587, or still another.
If you are having a problem with the SMTP provided by your ISP, then a change in policy may have been accompanied by a new name for their SMTP, or a new Authentication protocol.
More info, please, but first test with Port 587 and the smtp.mac.com.
