Still cannot send Mail (SMTP connection failed) post update.

PLEASE HELP!.......Post Maverick (and 10.9.1) I cannot send mail from my macbook pro. The message is "The SMTP connection to server "smtp.o2.co.uk" failed" I have trawled the many discussions about mail issues but most address mail inbox functionality and not sending. I have tried the OS X troubleshooting guide, rebuilt my mailboxes and created new accounts, all without success. All four of my o2 mail accounts are affected. Has anyone managed to resolve this issue? Would appreciate any suggestions

Ongoing issue for many people ... still not resolved until Apple fixes the SSL authentication in Mavericks:

It will be your SMTP settings that need correcting see doc above

Well, if your on ATT Yahoo. The settings are as follows, and I've had luck both sending and recieving with these settings.
    Incoming Mail Server
    Host Name: pop.att.yahoo.com
User Name: *****@sbcglobal.net (or whatever your ATT domain might be)
    Password: Required
    Outgoing Mail Server
    Host Name: smtp.att.yahoo.com
User Name: ****@sbcglobal.net (or whatever your domain happens to be)
Password: Optional (I left mine blank)
    Under Advanced
Deleted Messages: Remove After ? (Your Choice)
    Incoming Settings
    Use SSL : On
    Authentication: Password
    Delete from Server: Your choice
    Server Port: 995
    Outgoing Settings
    Use SSL: On
    Authentication: Password
    Server Port: 465
I've taken these setting from my phone. I can't remember all the domain names for the ATT Yahoo, but I know sbcglobal is one, and I believe attglobal is another. Also to change the ports under advanced, though you shouldn't have to, simply click the port area and a keypad will come up below. You can type the port number there.

    Is there a fix?

    Hi Axiomatic48
I am in the UK and eventually found the problem was due to my BT Home Hub Router.  Not sure where you live, but of you are in the UK, this might work for you.
I found this fix below on https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4604180?start=15&tstart=0
It worked for me.  If you can't link to the URL, here is the body of the text
There's an issue related to the BT homehub that is providing a hostname that is "syntactically incorrect" for several smtp server.
Here's how you can fix it.
Using your internet browser, go to the address "192.168.1.254
    - Follow instructions to reset your password if asked.
    - Then go to "Settings", then "Advanced Settings" and "home network"
You will see there all the devices that are connected or that has been connected before. It's gonna be easyer if yout computer is the only one connected.
Your computer should have a name like "unknown-xx:xx:xx:xx:xx ...
Click on this name, chose another name without any special characters, like "macbook" for exemple.
    And then click on "apply"
    - restart your computer.
    That should fix the issue.
Credit goes to vincentfromcork for providing me with the solution.
If this works for you, spread the word :-)

  • Cannot send mail smtp failed

I am being connected to my Personal Hotspot.I want to reply to an email from the iphone but unable to.  Here is the message:
The connection to the outgoing server "smtp.xxxxxxxx.com" failed.
    Please help.

My problem seems to have magically solved itself, possibly when I changed the incoming mail server. I'm still worried it'll come back though, so if anybody knows how tonprevent the problem, I'd still like to hear what you have to say.

  • Cannot Send Mail "The connection to the outgoing server "(null)" failed.FYI

Had this problem for 24 hours when trying to send email from one (not all) yahoo email accounts on my iphone.
In the meantime, there were errors from yahoo about the account being disabled due to "suspicious activity."
I called both yahoo and apple tech support to report. The latter had some basic troubleshooting steps, but these did not fix the problem:
    1. remove message from outbox (so it does not keep attempting to send the "Unsent message")
    2. turn off all email accounts in Settings>Mail.
    3. Delete the problematic account in Settings>Mail.
About a day later (today) regular service resumed and I am able to send emails from this account without problems.

Sounds like this was a Yahoo problem.

  • Cannot send mail from iPhone using Godaddy account/email

Was working perfectly until recently. Incoming mail still ok.
Now get error message when sending mail "Cannot Send Mail - The connection to the outgoing server "smtpout.secureserver.net" failed.
Have tried various fixes including using cwmx.com server, other ports and SSL on and off but no luck.
Have spoken to Godaddy support but they can't help as say must be local issue with iPhone.
    Is GoDaddyGuy out there?

    SizzyB and Joe,
I've read over your posts and see that you've both tried a few different troubleshooting steps with our support. The next step would be removing the whole email address from your iPhone and setting it back up. When you set up the email address, you should use the step by step walk through instructions available at http://help.godaddy.com/article/3423.
SizzyB, please note that cwmx.com is an AT&T specific server. Your UK provider might list a comparable SMTP server as a default or you might need to contact them to get their settings.
Joe, I would also like to note that you would specifically need to have our Unlimited email plan to utilize the IMAP service feature.
If either of you have further issues, please post the full details (including any errors messages you receive) and we'll continue to work on a solution.

  • IPhone - cannot send mail

    Getting this message:
Cannot Send Mail - The connection to the outgoing server "mail.bellsouth.net" failed. I have spent hours reading various posts on this and still haven't found a solution that will make my phone work. I am so frustrated and have just been putting up with it. Not worth it at this point!
    Anyone have any advice?
The e-mails just sit in my outbox and it shows a bar that says "sending" but it never goes through.
    Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):
Host Name: mail.bellsouth.net:465 (was 25 and didn't work)
User Name: - my user name
    Password: - my password
I would really appreciate any advice anyone has. Thank you.

I am a bellsouth.net customer also. I had the same problems. The outgoing mail server is mail.bellsouth.net
I could not get this to work on Edge. It would work if I was on wifi on my isp at home.
I found these setting and they work but you have to turn wifi off to send mail. Does anyone know of a way to send and recieve mail with a bellsouth.net account using both wifi and edge?
    iPhone - bellsouth.net
Choose Settings in the main window.
    Choose Mail.
    Choose Accounts > Add Account.
    Choose Other.
Choose POP and enter the following:
Name: Enter what you want to appear in the From field in messages you send.
    Address: [email protected]
Description: This will default to what you entered in the previous step. You can change this if desired.
    Incoming Mail Server (POP3):
    Host Name: mail.bellsouth.net
    User Name: your_username
    Password: Enter your e-mail password.
    Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):
    Host Name: cwmx.com
User Name: Optional (You do not need to enter anything)
Password: Optional (You do not need to enter anything)
Choose Save. The device will check the settings.
Choose Advanced. Check to make sure the following settings are correct:
Deleted Messages: Choose the option best suited to your needs.
    Settings:
Incoming Uses SSL: Set this to off.
Outgoing Uses SSL: Set this to off.
    Authentication: Choose Password.
Delete from Server: Choose the option best suited to your needs.
Go back to the previous page.
Turn account on at the top of the page.
Choose the Mail button at the top of the page.
Choose the Settings button at the top of the page.
Choose the main page button at the bottom of the device.
Choose the bellsouth.net mail account or Inbox if you only have one account set up.
The device will now automatically login and retrieve your e-mail.

  • Cannot send email SMTP to yahoo business email

i have yahoo business email, with 3 email accounts. iphone 3g will happily read the emails of the one account i want it to, but i cannot successfully reply or create new emails, send fails.
i tried to create a gmail account and use its smtp server. this worked for the gmail account, but still cannot send mail to the yahoo account.
tried to delete the outbound email server, but seems to be a bug in the interface - no matter what changes are made in the smtp detail, (even 'delete server') the smtp server for yahoo wil not delete. accordiing to some posts i read, supposedly if main smtp server is deleted, others in chain will pick up. this is not happening, when outbound function fails, it does not try with other smtp servers. yet send does work from gmail account!
what is the correct setting for yahoo? why cant i disable yahoo's standard smtp server as preprogrammed into iphone?

I have the very same issue. Can't delete or modify the "primary" account. All attempts to send result in the same, "Cannot Send Mail" message. As yet, I have heard nothing and the latest update ... 2.0.1 ... had no affects. Let me know if you find the solution.

  • IPad receives mail just fine, but cannot send mail

I am using a POP3 server with shaw (the server for both incoming and outgoing mail is shawmail.vc.shawcable.net) and, as stated in the title, my iPad will not send any mail. It refuses to interact with the SMTP server. It says "Cannot Send Mail    The connection to the outgoing server "shawmail.vc.shawcable.net" failed. Additional Outgoing Mail Servers can be configured in Settings > Mail, Contacts Calendars."
I have already tried everything that I have found already suggested on these forums and others, including inputting both a username and password for the SMTP server, changing the port to 25, and restarting my iPad after each of these changes. All of the settings on the iPad match those on my mail program perfectly (which works without a hitch, and has been for some time now.) I am connected by Wi-Fi to my home network, the exact same router I use to get my mail on my personal computer.
One other detail: whenever I change the settings for the SMTP server in Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars, it says that the SMTP server does not support password verification, which is just plain untrue. What is wrong with my iPad?

What did your email provider, Shaw, say or suggest about settings needed for the iPad?

  • ITouch error Message  Cannot send Mail.

My first generation iTouch has quite sending mail. I can receive email, but can not send. When I try to send mail I get the error message
    Cannot Send Mail
The connection to the outgoing server "smtp.mac.com:jbleeg" failed.
I am using apples Mail program and have it set up as imap. When I right click on the inbox and choose Edit Imap Accout, I can see the incoming and out going settings match my ipod setting screen.
This used to work, but when apple went to this "cloud" and .me, it quit working.
I rarely send email from my iTouch so this is not a big problem, but annoying.
    Any suggestions.
    Jerry

The other thing you might want to try on your touch is to just delete the mail account and re-enter it. This seems to fix a number of problems with e-mail when you are getting these types of errors.

  • Cox WebMail "Cannot Send Mail"

I have set up my cox.net email account on my iPhone. I can receive emails without any problem. When I try to send a message it does not go through, takes awhile and then displays:
    Cannot Send Mail
The connection to the outgoing server "smtp.west.cox.net" failed.
Does anyone know how to slove this problem? I called Cox and they have no idea of what I'm talking about. They told me that since I can send emails through my Cox WebMail account online, everything should be fine.
    Thanks,
    Charlie K

I called Cox and they have no idea of what I'm talking about. They told me that since I can send emails through my Cox WebMail account online, everything should be fine.
This is usually par for the course in regards to cable companies that are also internet service and email account providers but an FYI - sending messages via webmail access does not use an SMTP server. Although not very common, a provider's SMTP server can be down or having problems which wouldn't prevent sending messages via webmail access but even if both are not working at the same time, these are not related and one working or not working has no bearing on the other.
