STILL Estimating Indexing Time: Spotlight

Hi,
Spotlight is STILL "estimating indexing time". It's been doing this for weeks!
I have 175gb worth of sound effects (which live on an external hard drive) where I'd like to search for files via the Finder or Spotlight. However this "indexing" process is literally taking forever. As it is currently, the Finder or Spotlight is not locating / finder files that are clearly on the drive.
How can I speed up the indexing process or enable to locating of the files on the external drive?
Thanks.

I do not think it is true that TM requires Spotlight indexing of the TM (or any other) drive to work. (why should it? everything it needs to know is in the usual disk catalogues, it does not need to see/search the file contents). So you can put the TM drive on the private list in System Prefs/Spotlight and this should stop Spotlight pointlessly indexing the backup drive (which will still have the usual disk catalogues so you can examine it in the Finder or with TM).
Having said this there is a genuine problem here. My machine works fine with Spotlight and TM and even though it has not been manually excluded Spotlight does not, I believe, index the TM drive anyway, at all events it does not find all the backup near-duplicates of things on the TM drive. I think there is somewhere an invisible setting that ensures this. But on my wife's machine running the same system there was/is endless disk activity whilst Spotlight tries (apparently fruitlessly - the process seems to take forever without completing) to index the TM drive. I have tried excluding the TM drive as above but it still seem to try! One can manually kill the process using Activity Monitor but this may stop all indexing.
What I really want is direct control of the indexing process (clear include/exclude by drive, say) rather than having it hidden away somewhere - maybe Apple will provide this! I wonder whether indexing a TM drive presents problems because of all the similarly-named backup file copies....

  • Spotlight endlessly estimating indexing time

I see this has been an issue with several others. I've tried a few of the suggested UNIX commands in terminal, but no luck. This morning I reinstalled Snow Leopard plus the combo update and it's still "estimating index time" Prior to the reinstall, I did use Snow Leopard Cache Cleaner to delete the indexes, but I'm thinking it still shouldn't take hours to estimate the index time regardless. Any suggestions as to what I can do at this point?

Seems to be indexing now. Hopefully this will be the end of it!

  • Spotlight is "estimating indexing time" forever.

I just got this late 2010 Macbook Pro from a friend of mine after I broke my Macbook Air. I restored from Time Machine to get all my settings and files from the Air. Since I started up the computer two days ago, it has been "estimating indexing time" on spotlight search. I use spotlight search often so I really need to know how to get it unstuck from this loop! There was a CD in the computer, but I took it out and now I don't see what could be causing the problem.
I tried using sudo mdutil -a -i off and on, It still appears to be estimating forever.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Ok so turns out it was a special case, someone did something to this Macbook at some point in its life that kind of messed up the hard drive and then spotlight could not index it. Apple Support helped me and now all is well!

  • Time machine preparing forever and spotlight estimating indexing time

    hey guys,
Im having two problems that seem to be related. time machine gets stuck on preparing with the following error in console:
    Jul 18 17:03:19 Macintosh-5 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[6926]: Waiting for index to be ready (905 > 0)
Spotlight is also acting up and freezes indefinitely whilst estimating indexing time with the following console error:
Jul 18 17:03:44 Macintosh-5 mds[94]: (Error) Server: mdsync launch failed: (ipc/send) invalid destination port
I have not been able to find much on this last error on support forums. Any ideas? I have erased all spotlight indices, reset PRAM, this problems occurs when indexing both the internal and external hard drives. (The drive i am using for time machine has worked in the past.) I have also repaired disk permission etc. Any solutions without reinstalling leopard as the reason why i am trying to back up is so I can do a reinstall then!
    Thanks!

I had this exact problem yesterday (Waiting for index to be ready (905 > 0)). I rebooted with the shift key held down, rebooted again, and rebuilt my Spotlight index. Now there seems to be a conflict between Spotlight and Time Machine:
Aug 26 05:03:08 Musa /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[702]: Waiting for Spotlight to finish indexing /Volumes/Backup of Musa/Backups.backupdb
I thought of adding the backup drive to Spotlight's exclusion list, but doesn't the backup drive need to be indexed by Spotlight for it to work with Time Machine?

  • Spotlight hung, displays "Estimating Indexing Time" indefinitely

After I used iPhoto Library Manager, Dup Annihilator, and Thumbnail Annihilator, I have seen Spotlight crippled with this endless "Estimating Indexing Time" message. I removed an external hard drive after seeing this message, but this didn't help. I re-installed Snow Leopard--likewise, no help. What can I do? Help Appleheads!

If the problem is indeed iPhoto, you can go to the Spotlight prefs pane, open the Privacy tab, and put the iPhoto Library into it. That will remove it from Spotlight's indexing attempts. If Spotlight is then able to finish indexing you will know for sure that the problem is iPhoto. If that turns out to be the case, follow Barry's advice and post about the problem in the iPhoto forum.

  • Spotlight stuck at "estimating index time"

During normal work, Spotlight tries to build an index and remains stuck at "estimating index time". I have reviewed various threads about the problem but none solves my issue.
In my case the time machine volume is set as "do not index" in the privacy settings of Spotlight. Nothing else is there. Right in this moment no volume is connected and estimating index time remains there, at the cost of high CPU usage and fan noise.
    What can I do?

  • Spotlight - Estimating Indexing Time

If I don't exclude my RAID partitions with a privacy setting, spotlight never finishes indexing.
Unfortunately I want to spotlight search my RAID partitions. A few don't have Journaling, and a few do. Is Journaling a requirement for spotlight to work? Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get this to work?

    Hi OS Lucinity;
Having never heard of the 3Ware Sidecar before, I went out and read the link you provided.
I then did some searching and discovered this link
    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/external-raid-storage,1922-4.html
In this one it says this product is extremely slow when used in the Raid 5 configuration as you are. I would suggest talking to the vendor about your problems and seeing if they can help you.

  • Never-ending indexing in Spotlight

I recently restored a Retrospect backup to a new internal disk and updated to 10.5.8. Now Spotlight does not work at all -continually says it is 'estimating indexing time' (for three days at last count)
I have run Cocktail and all of the various mdutil commands suggested here and elsewhere but nothing helps.
Interestingly, I started up from an external disk and it also said 'estimating etc…' but after twenty minutes or so it finished and gave me Spotlight access to both the external startup disk and my internal disk. This external had never been connected to the iMac before so it must have been accessing some index which existed on the iMac internal disk - no way was it going to index a 250g drive in 30 minutes.
When I restart from the internal I am back to no Find capabilities and interminable 'estimating…', on both external and internal startup drive. Does this mean some corruption in the internal HD system? I have run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility etc and repaired permissions and files but still same problem
    Roger

OK, here's what I did and what happened.
1 tried to install 10.5.8. Installer hung at 'configuring…' after 45 mins I forced quit .
2 Booted from external HD. All OK, spotlight can find things on internal disk. Question - where is the index for the internal disk, on it or the external boot disk?
3 Installed 10.5.8 on internal disk. Rebooted, Repaired permissions
4 Still no find capability on internal. Spotlight not indexing. Opened Cocktail, tried to erase Spotlight index, Cocktail hangs - 15 mins so force quit.
5 Ran various mdutil commands to clear indices and directory. Below is console log
Last login: Thu Nov 12 09:26:00 on console
    michael-corsars-imac-g5:~ michael$ sudo mdutil -i off

    michael-corsars-imac-g5:~ michael$ sudo mdutil -E /volumes/michaelsdisk
    No index.

    michael-corsars-imac-g5:~ michael$ sudo mdutil -E /Volumes/MichaelsDisk

    michael-corsars-imac-g5:Michaelsdisk michael$ sudo rm -fr .Spotlight-V100
    michael-corsars-imac-g5:Michaelsdisk michael$ sudo mdutil -i on /Volumes/MichaelsDisk
Error: unable to perform operation. (-103)
    No index.
6 Tried to force indexing by moving disk to Privacy and then out again. BUT, Privacy would not accept hard disk, message that 'an error has occurred'.
7 Safe boot on internal disk. Now I can move hard disk to Privacy pane. Cl;ose Prefs, wauit ten minutes, open Spotlight Prefs/Privacy, remove hard disk.
8 Spotlight starts to index hard disk: message 'estimating indexing time
Question: Is all of this normal? How long should 'estimating…' message appear - it disappeared after a few minutes when booted from external disk and Spotlight index for internal hard drive appeared almost immediately? So far it's been running for an hour and it's still estimating,no sign of how long index will actually take to appear.
    Thanks

  • Spotlight in Mountain Lion still keeps indexing and slowing everything down

    Hi
I am still have issues with the indexing in spotlight and mountain lion. I have tried all sollutions ( I gues not all as it is still not fixed) but i tried to trash the V100 file and reindex again. Now it basically indexes when ever it does not give a time sometimes it indexes for 5 min then again for an hour and it seriously slows down the system

  • Six months later: still cannot get Time Capsule to  back up my PowerBooks

I have a 500g TC and two Powerbook G4 (Al) computers. I have the same problem with both computers. I reinitialize the TC disk ("Erase" in the Airport Utility) then do an initial backup over hardwired Ethernet. Both PBs have about 60GB of data on them. The initial backups take the expected 12-18 hours. Thereafter, the automatic Time Machine backups work for about 3-5 days, then they stop. Time Machine gets into the "Preparing Backup" state and stays there for hours (I give up after 24 hours).
I tried turning off TM and doing the backups manually (selecting "Backup Now" from the TM menu). That has the same problem, although it takes longer to appear.
I have no reinitialized my TC disk 5 times and had the same problem 5 times.
I have turned off Spotlight indexing of the backup disk and of the PB disk. That has not helped.
Can anyone suggest anything to get this to work?

    Rob & tubwreck,
Thanks for the redirect. However, I have already revised that info with new data. See below...
    *_Spotlight And Time Machine_*
    *Runaway MDS Process*
For Spotlight searching to work, it needs to have metadata. Every time a file is created, modified or deleted, the system notifies Spotlight that it needs to update the meta-data store (mds). First, Spotlight (mdworker) seizes the file, determines its’ type, and then assigns an appropriate importer (mdimport).
While some bits of metadata (modification dates, file type, path name) are easy to gather, most of the interesting data is embedded inside the file. To gather this embedded information Spotlight must use an importer (mdimport), a small plug-in that extracts information from files created by various applications. Each file type has its’ own importer. For instance there are unique Spotlight importers for JPEG, MP3, Word, PDF files and so on.
It’s the importer’s responsibility to read the data file and construct a dictionary that contains the appropriate metadata. When finished, the dictionary is delivered to Spotlight (mdworker), which then updates the meta-data store (mds). The original file is then released to the system to complete the originally intended action.
Ordinarily, this process is virtually instantaneous and invisible to the user. At times, however, it can hang, or loop causing Spotlight (mdworker) and the meta-data store (mds) to monopolize the CPU and interfere with other system events like Time Machine backups. The Console logs may report the following over and over again for perhaps hundreds of times.
+“mds(32): (Error) Import: importer:0x8f8c00 Importer start failed for 503”+
Eventually, the Time Machine backup may fail with the Console logs reporting
+“Indexing a file failed” / “Copy stage failed with error: 11”.+
Or a backup may be completely stalled in midstream, never seaming to end.
Go to Applications --> Utilities folder and launch Activity Monitor.
Clicking the “Process Name” column and scrolling down to the “m”s will reveal that one or all of the Spotlight components (mds, mdworker, mdimport) is maxing out your CPU.
Highlight “mds” and click “Quit Process” in the toolbar.
In the dialoge box that appears click “Quit”.
Enter our Admin password and click “OK”
The stalled backup should now resume and complete. If not, choose “Stop Backing Up” from the Time Machine menu or click the tiny “x” icon in the Time Machine Preferences. When the backup has completely stopped, select “Backup Now” from the Time Machine menu.
*Waiting for index to be ready (909 > 0)*
One of the processes Time Machine relies on for accurate backups is the indexing of the backup disk. With this index, Time Machine can quickly search the backup disk for files the user wishes to restore. When a routine backup begins, often the “Preparing…” stage will include a phase that permits Spotlight to update its’ index of the backup disk. Momentarily the Spotlight icon in the menu bar will pulsate and the Console logs will report “Waiting for index to be ready”. Generally, this phase is so quick that the user is unaware that it occurred.
Unfortunately, this phase can hang thus preventing Time Machine from completing a backup. During this period, the Spotlight icon will continuously pulsate. Clicking on the Spotlight icon will reveal a progress bar with no estimate of the remaining time or it will indicate many hours of indexing still remains. The Console logs will continually report “Waiting for index to be ready”.
Ordinarily, Spotlight indexing is a good thing. And at times, if an index has become corrupt or untrustworthy, Spotlight will require a period of time to rebuild the index. If it has only been a couple of hours then let the process continue. However, if it has been many hours, and the Spotlight menu progress bar still does not indicate an estimated time of completion, then things have hung. You will need to force Spotlight to clear its’ indexes and re-catalogue all volumes. [http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2409]
    *Force Spotlight to Rebuild Indexes*
Go to System Preferences --> Time Machine.
Using the slider on the left, turn OFF Time Machine backups for now.
Next, click “Show All” in the toolbar.
    Select the Spotlight Preferences.
    Click the Privacy Tab.
First, drag your Macs’ internal hard disk from the desktop to the Privacy list.
Wait 10 seconds, then highlight the Macs’ hard disk in the list and click the tiny “-” button at the bottom to remove it from the list.
Spotlight will initiate a reindex of the hard disk. If you click on the Spotlight menu icon you may see the message:
+“Spotlight helps you quickly find things on your computer. Spotlight will be available as soon as the contents of your computer have been indexed.”+
A progress bar will indicate perhaps 10-20 minutes remaining depending upon how much data there is.
Once completed, drag your Time Machine backup disk into the Privacy list of the Spotlight Preferences.
Wait 10 seconds, then highlight the Time Machine backup disk in the list and click the tiny “-” button at the bottom to remove it from the list.
Spotlight will now initiate a reindex of the hard disk.
Once completed, if you have any other hard disk attached to your Mac that are also being backed using Time Machine, then force a reindex as well using the procedure outlined above.
*For Time Capsule / AirDisk Users*
To properly force a reindex of networked disks, you will need to mount the Time Machine disk image so that it appears on the desktop. This will appear as a white drive icon. There is no need to index the green Time Machine drive with the clock icon on it.
Drag the white backup disk image to the Spotlight Privacy list.
Wait 10 seconds, then remove it using the “-” button.
Reindexing disk images can often take much more time, particularly if this is being done wirelessly. Initially it may report upwards of 15-20 hours of indexing remaining. However after a period if time this estimate can begin to drop to just a few hours. Let is proceed without interruption. (Note: This period of reindexing can be reduced by connecting the Time Capsule to your Mac via ethernet cable, and then forcing the reindex to occur.)
Once completed, turn Time Machine Preferences back ON.
    Now initiate a backup.
Naturally, the first backup after a Spotlight reindex may be a lengthy one.
    *Deleting the .Spotlight-V100 Directory*
At times, simply forcing Spotlight to reindex a volume is not enough to clear corrupt indexes. Additionally, stopping a Spotlight index while in progress can itself introduce further anomalies. In these instances, it may become necessary to delete the .Spotlight-V100 directory on the backup disk entirely. [http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/stopspotlightindex.html] This can be accomplished with the following Terminal command:
    +sudo rm -ri /pathtovolume/.Spotlight-V100+
where /pathtovolume is the path of the volume in question.
The volume can then be reindexed by any of the following methods:
    Restarting your Mac.
Using Disk Utility to first unmount, then mount the volume.
    Issuing the command: +sudo mdutil -E /pathtovolume+
*Redirect the Backup to a Different Hard Disk*
It may be that directing backups to a different hard disk, performing a full backup, then redirecting Time Machine back to the original hard disk clears this issue up.
One contributor reported: “However, I have fixed the problem by accident! Concerned at not having a backup, I did a new backup to an external USB drive which worked fine. I then set my backup device back to the Time Capsule, ran backup and it now works fine. Doing the backup to a different device appears to have cleared the Spotlight problem.” [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8272650#8272650]
Let us know if any of this helps further.
    Cheers!

  • How to get Outlook email indexed by Spotlight after reinstalling Office 2011?

I reinstalled Office 2011 and my Outlook email index stopped updating. I forced a reindex of the entire drive, but the email still wasn't indexing. Stopped by the Genius Bar and they suggested reindexing the drive and repairing permissions (didn't work).

    Hi
As per the information and details provided by you, to get Outlook email indexed by spotlight after reinstalling Office 2011, please follow these steps: -
Outlook provides a custom importer to Spotlight to index email. It is typically found in:
    "/Applications/Microsoft Office 2011/Microsoft Outlook.app/Contents/Library/Spotlight/Microsoft Outlook.mdimporter",
    You can use the command
/usr/bin/mdimport –L to list all installed importers. When I did that I saw that the importer from the old installation of Outlook was still installed because it was still in the trash can. When I tried to manually import an email using the
command usr/bin/mdimport –d2 /[ path ]/x00_138.olk14Message I saw that it was failing to load the importer from the trash.
Emptying the trash fixed the issue. Wish there was a way to selectively empty the trash without deleting everything.
Once I emptied the trash,  had to force Spotlight to reindex the email folder by adding the /Users/jim/Documents/Microsoft User Data folder to Privacy
tab of Spotlight System Settings, and then removing it again. After spotlight reported the indexing was complete (via the Spotlight dropdown in the upper right) the email was all indexed again.
I hope this information will be helpful for you.
    Thanks and regards
    Shweta@G

Then i try and plug it into my pc with iTunes on (i've set it to do not automatically sync devices) but it still freezes every time. the only way to unfreeze it is by detatching the ipod or resetting with menu/centre (until it loads up again, where it immediately unfreezes and comes up with a load of messages saying "cannot read iPod" and when i try and restore it by pressing menu/centre button while it's plugged in, it says "cannot restore as it is being used by another program" or "error 1415". • Estimated Start time in notification based on Time defined in Work center

    Hi,
Following Satish post- I am trying to find solution to the same  problem so i will appreciate any advise.
When the notification is created ,the estimated start time should be based on priority .This in iteslf is pretty straight & simple. However if the reported time is after work hours or towards the end of work hours or weekends , the estimated start time should be reflected accordingly based on factory calender & work center time schedule.
In other words the estimated start time should fall within the window of work hours available.
    Example:
Presume the the working hours for the Organization are 8:00AM to 5:00 PM & a call comes for service at 4:00 PM. Also say , for high priority the defined response time is 5 hours. In such a instance the estimated start date should be set to next day at 11:00 AM.
Appreciate your help for the configuration that need to be done
    Shirly

    Hi,
I think ur talking about notification malfunction start time .. currently it just takes the system date and time by default .. and if you need work center timings i believe first u need the eqpt /F.loc to get the work center data in notificaiton ...
I think u can get these dates can be modified while saving by using user exit  : QQMA0014 QM/PM/SM: Checks before saving a notification or BADI   IF_EX_NOTIF_EVENT_SAVE , but at the same time the eqpt or F.loc have work center details in master record ...or work center needs to be entered manually in notification ..., pls check up ..

  • How to check if a given folder is indexed by spotlight?

    Hi Friends,
I have this well known indexing issue with spotlight in mountain lion where it doesn't index Microsoft Outlook for mac 2011 e-mails.
I have tried all the solutions in web like:
    1. Re-indexing Microsoft User Data Folder
    2. Re-indexing Entire hard drive
    3. Re-installing Office 2011 for mac (14.2.4)
    with no luck.
Now what I am trying is, remove Office 2011 completely and install Office 2011 for mac version 14.2.3 (assuming the indexing issue is not in this version of office) and re-index entire hard drive.
Is there a way (other than the Privacy tab of Spotlight preferences), e.g. a command in Terminal to check if Spotlight is really indexing the ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data folder at all?
i.e. once the indexing is completed, is it possible to go into that folder or right click-->Get Info and see if this one has been indexed by spotlight?
Why I am asking this question is, generally when we try to re-index entire hard drive and try to add this in Privacy tab of Spotlight preferences, it pops up a warning message asking for confirmation. But such a warning message is not seen when I add ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data folder alone. This makes me suspect wethere Spotlight is indexing this folder at all?

    Hello Rui,
Use the function module ENQUEUE_EVVBAKE with the interface parameter VBELN as the Sales Order number. If sy-subrc is not zero after execution of the function module, then that Sales Order is being edited.
