Still Frames, Losing focus, PNG

I'm put some still frames into my timeline, however, when I playback the stills, it loses focus. When I pause the timeline on the stills, it becomes fine, perfect focus and everything. (These stills are being taken from a seperate digital camera.)
The stills I put in are jpg format...should they be in PNG format? How do I convert it to PNG format? Thanks in advance.
I have:
FInal Cut Pro 3.0
Mac OS X 10.4.10

Shane's Stock Answer #2: Blurry playback
ONLY JUDGE THE QUALITY OF YOUR MATERIAL ON AN EXTERNAL NTSC MONITOR, OR AT LEAST A TV.
1. Disable overlays on the canvas
2. Make sure you've rendered everything (no green bars at the top of the timeline
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24787
Video playback requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.

  • Any way to capture a still frame as an image in Imovie HD? "Create Still Frame" just gives me short MOV files

I'm trying to export a still from a project I'm working on so I can add some things to it in photoshop before importing it back in to the imovie project.
It's from the end of a clip I have. I know I could just use grab and take a screen capture but the quality would be awful.
Imovie HD has this feature, "Create Still Frame" and when I google this problem all the answers tell me to use that.
HOWEVER: When I do use Create Still Frame, instead of giving me a JPG I can use or another image format, it creates a short 5 second .mov clip of the still. If I wanted it in movie format I'd just use the original clip, what I need is an image format!
There doesn't seem to be an option anywhere to change what type of still frame format it uses. There must be a way to do this however, all the answers I've found say it should be JPG and I should be able to locate it then in the project package - what am I doing wrong?

The shortest way to accomplish this is to download a copy of MPEG Streamclip as relayed by longtime iMovie Discussion Group participant AppleMan1958
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/15808352#15808352
First, get an app called MPEG Streamclip, which is free. (google MPEG Streamclip from Squared 5)
    Open MPEG Streamclip.
In iMovie, select the clip you need. Then, right-click/Reveal in Finder.
Drag this clip into MPEG Streamclip
In MPEG Streamclip, move the playhead to the frame you want.
In MPEG Streamclip, click FILE/EXPORT FRAME.
Choose JPEG, TIFF, or PNG and give it a name.

  • How do i set still frame length default?

    hello,
an animator gave me some sequential .png files for a short 5 second clip.
they are all still frames, but my final cut keeps importing them each as 10 seconds in length as default.
how do i make it one frame each so that when i drag to my timeline it flows like a video?
    thanks!
    steven

Final Cut Pro: User Preferences: Editing Tab
First box is "Still/Freeze Duration." Set that to your desired length, in your case, one frame. When you place your frames on the timeline, they should now be one frame each.
You may have to create a new sequence for this to take effect (I can't remember right now if this is one of the settings that requires a new sequence or not).

  • Losing Focus to greedy dialog

I have a main JFrame and a JDialog to accompany it as a kind of toolbar. The user types in the main frame, and the dialog stays in the foreground of the frame at all times. It's a setup similar to MS Word with one of the toolbars (say the Font toolbar) floating - in which I need the main frame to keep focus so that the user can keep typing. The problem is, the dialog keeps wanting to steal the focus, so the user can't type.
I've tried all sorts of things, from telling the main frame to request the focus, the custom text area to grab the focus... I added a windowListener to the dialog so that whenever it gained the focus, the text area would grab the focus again. I even did a dialog.setFocusable(false); yet it still takes the focus.
When does it take the focus, you ask? Obviously it doesn't do it constantly - I have another dialog that pops up when the user clicks a button - an options dialog (modal), that when it completes, it destroys and creates a new accompanying dialog, and then after I tell it to set the dialog to visible, it steals the focus (even though it's not focusable). I tried immediately after setting it to visible, having the text area grab the focus again, but still to naught. I've almost resorted to using the swing thread to grab the focus every so often.
    What do I do?

Swing related questions should be posted in the Swing forum.
The dialog will only take focus if you click on it. Otherwise focus will stay with the main frame. You can always make your buttons on the dialog non-focusable. You can also try:
Window.setFocusableWindowState(false); If you need further help then you need to create a [Short, Self Contained, Compilable and Executable, Example Program (SSCCE)|http://homepage1.nifty.com/algafield/sscce.html], that demonstrates the incorrect behaviour.
Don't forget to use the [Code Formatting Tags|http://forum.java.sun.com/help.jspa?sec=formatting], so the posted code retains its original formatting.

  • Creating a quiz in iMovie: Showing multiple still frames simultaneously

I am trying to create a short quiz in iMovie which involves choosing one of 4 video clips. After each of the clips has been played I want to show 4 still frames (one from each clip) together on screen. This will allow participants to see all their options at once, insted of relying on memory. I have the frames saved on my hard drive but cannot figure out how to create a four window display. Is there any way of doing this on iMovie HD? Or is it possible to make such a collage in iPhoto and then import it?
Any help would be much appreciated

Because you've suggested "..doing this on iMovie HD? Or is it possible to make such a collage in iPhoto and then import it?.." here's a simple way to do it with those programs ..and with QuickTime!
With iPhoto, just import your stills into iPhoto, then use the bottom-right 'magnify' slider to give yourself a 'four-up' view (..four photos onscreen together). Then hold down Shift and the Apple key and jab the '4' key to give you a set of cross-hairs, and hold down your mouse/trackpad button while you drag the cross-hairs over the four pics, then release the mouse button/trackpad.
That'll give you a .pdf file (..or .png file..) which you can view using Preview:
Optionally Export or Save As a .jpg and import it into iMovie - or just import it in its default format - where it'll appear as a 5-second still which you can add onto the end of your four clips.
Doing a similar thing with QuickTime, open individual QuickTime players, each with one of your chosen clips in. Arrange them into a rough 4x3 shape, and take a snapshot of the four together, using - as before - ShiftApple4 and drag the cross-hairs to cover all four:
If 'Ken Burns' is on, by default, in iMovie, any extra black edges will be trimmed off when you import the still which you created with ShiftApple4 ..or, if you turn OFF the Ken Burns effect before importing, any black edges will remain, so that you get the most of your four images. [..You'll get black edges if your overall composite of the four pics is not exactly the 4x3 ratio which iMovie normally expects..]
When you import into iMovie, your '4-up' pics should look like this:
For larger images, click on 'Start Slideshow' on this homepage..
Oh; and welcome to iMovie Discussions!

  • How to export still frame from Quicktime movie?

    Hello folks
I often need to use a still frame from a quicktime movie as an image file to work with in PhotoShop for windows.
If I export a frame via the export command and choose "Movie to picture" I end up with a .pct file, that Photoshop will not open.
I can open the .pct file with the Quicktime PictureViewer and then export it from that app as i.e. a JPEG-file, but I would like to avoid that extra step and just export a usable file straight from QT.
Anybody know how that can be done?
    Best regards
    Kris

Same problem here - no matter whether I choose Photo - JPEG or PNG format as the "compressor", QT 7 Pro wants to save with a .pct extension, and changing it to .jpg or .png extension fails to open.
The two workarounds I've found are:
    1. Save it in Photo - JPEG or PNG format with a .pct extension, open with Photoshop CS4 or below, save to desired format.
One may be able to accomplish the same using Preview instead of Photoshop, but on my Snow Leopard machine I get the error "The PICT file format is not supported in 64-bit mode. Try selecting "Open in 32 Bit Mode" in the Finder's info window for Preview." and I don't feel like bothering to do this.
    2. Use Grab to take a screenshot, copy into Preview, crop as necessary and save to desired format.
Which is easier depends on whether you feel like having to do precision cropping or not. Totally agree with above commenters - whither PICT, Apple?

  • Airport Losing Focus??

I have a Mac set as an FTP server at a second location for backing up. My server at my first location will start backing up, completing some files. After a while, the network light on the modem at location 2 will stop blinking (indicating no traffic). The message from my backup software is "(FTP: server disconnected or timed out)". I can browse the web with no problems when this is happening. Is my Airport Extreme just losing focus?
Also, pod casts will not down load to same FTP server. I'll get anywhere from 1/8 to 1/2 of a pod cast before the network traffic light stops blinking.
Help! Boss is getting nervous. Thanks.

Thanks JJMack.  I was hoping it wasn't the card I was using.  This is the first time I've used a geforce card on my work PC.  However it's not the first time I've used them with Adobe's apps.  For years my personal PCs had them and usually without issues like this.  We chose to attempt to use this new Geforce GTX980 card because of how much further advanced it is over midrange Quadro cards at the moment, and because of some of the other software I am using that is more viewport and video ram dependent.  Adobe applications are still my mainstay but we couldn't justify the purchase of older technology midrange K4000 cards that were supposedly newer than my older 4000.  As these still had older PCI connections than the HP workstations we built, among other tech such as cuda core amounts that are drastically behind the times.  Jumping up to 6000 level Quadro cards for up to date technology just isn't in the budget as the prices are astronomical. As with the Titan cards cards that are high priced and yet older tech.  So we made the decision to try the GTX card for a while.  Right now this sporadic window focus issue seems to be the only new issue I've run into so far.   I'm sure I will see more in the near future doing something if the card is the issue.  Maybe the new types of hardware being used such as the PCI express hard drive, or very recent photoshop updates can be blamed.  Just not figuring it out just yet.
I was informed by an IT professional here that has application creation experience that this truly seemed like an application problem more than a graphic card problem.   But until someone can corroborate that thought I guess I'm going to keep blaming the newer GTX card or wait to see if an App update makes this go away quietly.  No one else has chimed in yet.  Thanks for the link.

  • Problem Previewing HD Project on NTSC Monitor - Only Still Frames...

    Hello all.
I have a calibrated NTSC That i purchased for accurate monitoring of my projects.
I thought I tested on a HD project, but for some reason, now that I'm working on a major project it's not working properly.
When I'm editing, it will display still frames but not video. Before anyone suggests it, i have triple checked that the External monitor setting in the view menu is on All Frames.
    Any suggestions?
    -aj

But it won't for HD. For HD you need an HD capture card and HD monitor.
If you are working with DVCPRO HD from a Varicam or HVX, then you can monitor to an HD monitor routing thru an AJ-HD1200 or 1400...or if you have a capture card with analoge outs like the Kona 2 then you can monitor on an SD monitor.
You cannot monitor HD with the same setup you use for SD. Sorry.

  • Problem with rendering still frame capture in FCP7

I'm a hack, so let's keep that in mind as I ask this question....but I *did* try to look through the forum for a similar issue before I created this post.
My situation:  I am pulling some HD video from a Canon Vixia into FCP and basically just piecing it together with some minor editing to match music beats, etc. for some local sports leagues.  Generally I find no issues with FCP, although I've only been dabbling with it for a few months.
My problem:  My latest creation here: http://anothermotherproductions.smugmug.com/Movies/2011-Lacrosse-sample-movie/17 693649_L5rr8X does something annoying.  I pulled a still frame from the video clip to let it hang there for a few seconds.  See the 1:01 mark.  The still frame looks clear in FCP, but when exported (and I've tried a few different formats, like h.264, pro-res, and "sharing" it for iPod) the image is ugly - looks like a motion blur from an old TV or something.
I've checked that the last frame of the video clip is the frame BEFORE the still frame, so walking step by step through the sequence reveals a normal sequence of motion, with the final frame "hanging" there for a while because its the still frame.
    Make sense?
    Anyone have constructive input?
    Thanks.

Thank you so much - that helped tremendously.  Image looks great now, AND I learned something.

  • How to create and export a still frame from a movie in iMovie 09

Are you working in iMovie and realize that certain frames in the movie would be perfect as photographs? Here is how to extract them...
*To get a still frame from an Event*, right-click on the frame and select "Add Still Frame to Project". The still will be added to the end of the current project. Right click on the still frame in the project and select "Reveal in Finder". You will see a jpeg file that is highlighted. Drag this jpeg file in the finder to the iPhoto icon on your dock.
*If you want a still from a project*, rather than an event, the process is similar, except you right-click on the frame and select "Add Freeze Frame", and it adds the freeze frame at the end of the clip rather than at the end of the project. Right-click/reveal in Finder, drag JPEG to iPhoto icon in dock.
*If you are not using iPhoto*, and just want to save to your desktop, click Reveal in Finder as above, then COPY, then PASTE to desktop.
Hint: If you do not want to clutter up your iMovie Project with stills at the end that you would have to go back and delete, then create a separate iMovie Project just for your stills, and follow the instructions for capturing stills from an Event.
Note: If you do not have a right mouse button, then control-click will work instead of right-click.

  • Video playback on external monitor only producing still frame

I am trying to use a HD TV as a playback device as managed to get it to work, however it has now stopped working and only produces a still frame. When I hit play it will play fine in the timeline but display only a still frame on the second monitor. I have made sure that the settings under video playback are set to full screen and that mirroring is turned off.
Even when I play back on Main the image on the main monitor only displays a still frame until the second monitor is unplugged.
    Am I missing something?

    How is the TV connected?
If via firewire and an analog/DV converter, are you feeding the HDTV something other than a DV signal? If so, it won't work.

  • Still frames not staying still...

I've had this problem on a couple of projects and have manned up to make my first post ever in a forum to try and solve it. Any help would be appreciated.
In Final Cut I made some still frames using the Modify--Make Freeze Frame command, then used a cross dissolve between the two images in the sequence. These are the only still frames in the sequence, the rest is video.
I've exported to Quicktime movie, then brought that movie into DVD Studio Pro, created the project and burned the disc. When watching the DVD all video footage is fine except for--the still images, which flicker like crazy. It is a long dissolve, nearly a minute, but I've had this problem on other projects where the freeze frame lasts only a few seconds and there is no transition used at all.
Any idea why this flickering (ghosting?) would occur with freeze frames? Know how to fix it?
Thanks in advance for any help.

If you have very thin horizontal lines you will get flickering due to the interlacing that TVs do. You can try running your stills through the de-interlace filter or the flicker filter. See which works best for you.

  • Still frame not included in rendered video file

I've been working on a video project for the last couple of days, and have run into a puzzling issue. My video ends with a still frame that lasts about 3 seconds, with text on top of the image. When I share my video to iTunes and select the "Mobile" size option, the still image shows up fine. When I share my video to iTunes with the "Large" size option, the still image no longer appears under the text. Does anybody know why this would occur? Any help would be much appreciated!

Oddly enough, I went through the whole delete-reinsert routine just before I did the mobile-sized render where the still image showed up. Of course, when I did the large-sized render immediately afterwards, the image was gone. I just went through the whole rigamarole again and am currently rendering an HD version, so we'll see if it works. I figure if I get a successful HD copy of my project, I can always use that to create smaller versions rather than rendering those from iMovie itself. Right now I'm just in wait & see mode.
Unfortunately, adding a few seconds of black after the still frame spoils the effect I'm going for with my project, so it's not a feasible solution in this instance.
EDIT: So the HD version finished rendering, and no still image, sigh. What the heck is going on?

  • OT: DVD Slide Show - How to do still-frames?

I want to make DVDs containing my photos, so that I can inflict them on
family members and other unfortunates. I have not yet been able to discern
if any of the commercial packages allow for the creation of still-frame
shows - if that is the correct term to describe what I want.
I have commercial DVDs which, as extra content, contain documentary
collections of still images. These groups of images appear to be
single-frame images, and do not automatically advance -- they require the
user to press the Skip button to see the next image.
THAT's what I want to do... have the slideshow require a manual advance, so
that each photo could be viewed for as long (or short!) as desired, before
    moving on to the next.
Of course, I would also want to create traditional "moving" slideshows as
    well, when desired.
Can anyone advise with regard to this quest?
    TIA,
    Byron

    Byron,
To the best of my knowledge, Photoshop Elements will not allow you to create DVDs of any sort - let alone whether it is possible to manually advance your way through a collection of stills.
PSE's primary purpose is as an image editor and since version 3 as an image organiser. Sure it has a few bells and whistles that allow you to present your images in a vareity of ways, but it is not strong in this area. Maybe that is why there isn't a great response to your orginal post.
I do know that Adobe Premier Elements allows you to create DVDs and once installed, there is an option on the file menu in organiser that allows you to send images direclty to PrEl.
Once again however, I would advise caution. Premier Elements is a cut down video editing suite, so it might be overkill for your needs and have a steeep learning curve!
Many people have mentioned a product called Proshow Gold in here. I don't use it and so cannot comment personally, but plenty of people like it and if I recall correctly, you will be able to create DVDs.
    Best of luck
    Mark
