Still Frames Time Length

I am making a slideshow thing on iMovie and I have all the pictures in it and in order and have quotes popping up in between them, while music is playing! The majority of the pictures last for around 5 seconds so you can see the pictures, but a lot of them are one second and you cannot even see the picture or read the quotes! I cannot get them to stay on the screen for longer. I've tried moving the time cursor to make them longer, but it moves then reverts back to its original position! Can anyone help me figure out how to make the time length longer on the pictures? Thanks!

Sometimes permissions and preferences can get corrupted. Whenever iMovie starts acting funny, a common maintenance procedure is to do the following: Delete preferences by closing iMovie and trashing the file com.apple.iMovie.plist found in User (the House icon)/Library/Preferences. Then do a permissions repair using the Utilities/Disk Utility App on your Mac. Open the Disk Utilities window and select the Mac hard drive icon at the top of the side pane at the left. Then click on the Repair Permissions button. When you have repaired permissions and deleted preferences, restart your computer and launch iMovie. iMovie will replace the .plist file that you deleted. Be sure also that you have sufficient free disk space on your hard drive for iMovie to function correctly. 25GB often is recommended by users of this forum. After doing all of the above, relaunch iMovie and see whether you still have the problem.

  • Premiere pro CC  - still no time lengths on clips

So, I finally broke down and bought CC subscription in hopes of needed upgrades. Great to see thst the timeline now shows changed lengths as you drag one end shorter or longer, but as all other professional editors do now, please can Adobe add standard Clip Lengths to all clips on timeline as an additional option. This request seems to be a "No Brainer" and/but for some reason Adobe continues to leave this important feature out... Why?  (I know it's probably pretty hard to add the codec to the program as I notice that the initial clip 'names' are a floating layer upon themselves that don't scroll with each clip but rather stay on top of the clips on the left side, but I have faith in you that it can be done).

Jim, your assumption is correct.  As you all sould know, being in a hurry iS part of the editing business. Since Premiere is probably one of the only editors that does NOT include Clip lengths (next to or just below the clip name) I am absolutely dumbfounded on how anyone could zip around the timeline with many layers and have to stop everytime to wait for the mouse-over-clip way to see such a simple, essential property of what you are working on. Your 'not understanding' the reasoning for my request here is either missplaced, or you don't live in the 'real world' of editing with clients and producers breathing behind your neck asking for many things at the same time, including partial and total clip lengths.  It's such a "No Brainer" why editors, would need this information simply by looking at the screen, as this REALLY isn't an over-the-top request, and need not affect your editing experience, as this is an 'OPTION' in most all other editors.  Please forgive my intense response. I do not mean any disrespect to you.  Rich

  • Dragging stills to timeline, default time length?

How (or can I?) set the default still photo time length when I drag photos to the timeline? I am creating a slideshow of sorts, and would like to set the default time for all the stills I drag to the sequence. Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Good idea David. I was however, refering to changing the duration in the browser.
Your tip changes the duration of that instance of the image(s) in the timeline but does not change the default duration of the original in the browser. Each time you use that image again from the brower, you have to change the duration. I suppose you could always copy and paste the instance from the timeline if needed...
    Nice tip though.

  • How do i set still frame length default?

    hello,
an animator gave me some sequential .png files for a short 5 second clip.
they are all still frames, but my final cut keeps importing them each as 10 seconds in length as default.
how do i make it one frame each so that when i drag to my timeline it flows like a video?
    thanks!
    steven

Final Cut Pro: User Preferences: Editing Tab
First box is "Still/Freeze Duration." Set that to your desired length, in your case, one frame. When you place your frames on the timeline, they should now be one frame each.
You may have to create a new sequence for this to take effect (I can't remember right now if this is one of the settings that requires a new sequence or not).

  • I am having issues with adjusting the duration of time for each still frame and transition in imovie 11.  Each time that I adjust these times, the app does not accept the change, and automatically enters its own time. Am I doing something wrong?

I am having issues with adjusting the duration of time for each still frame and transition in imovie 11.  Each time that I adjust these times, the application does not accept the change, and instead automatically enters its own time. Is there a work around this? Or am I doing something wrong? Please Help!
    Thank you,
    lagrl

Have you tried turning off automatic transitions ? Choose file - project properties and follow the dialogue box to change duration with a slider.  iMovie also doesn't allow a transition to be more than 50% duration of the clip its attached to. In other words if the clip is 4 seconds the transition cannot be more than 2 seconds and remember that relates to the first clip as the following clip (right side) is pulled back to overlay it.
Does this help.  Perhaps you already know this ?

  • Cross dissolve and still frame problem

Sorry for reposting this issue but I am still have problems.  In fact, it is extremely frustrating and I don't know why.
I am using FCP X 10.0.8 and when I try to add cross dissolves to some still frames it will not allow me.
I get the following error msg.
The Japanese error msg says that there is insufficient media length outside the clip edge to make a transition.  And it asks whether I want to make a ripple trim to the media in order to make the transition.  It says that if I decide to do so then the overall project duration will be shortened.  However, even if I decide to do the later it will not let me make the cross dessolve.
As you can see there should be enough length outside the clip edge to allow this.  Or am I misleading myself in this view?
According to me - and I know that I am a sheer novice at this, there should be enough media length to allow the transition.  This is happening in not only cross dissolves but any other dissolve which I attempt to add.  The problem seems to be intermittent or varies.  If I replace the still frame then sometimes it will allow the transition but effects subsequent frames.  Either putting in "flash" or bogus frames - even just a black frame.  These I can only detect when I expand the timeline to the very limit.  And on some occassions there is nothing whatsoever that seems to be blocking the adding of the cross dissolve.  This will be the 3rd time which I have had to restart the project and it is getting rather annoying, not to say that I am approaching the time limit which is adding even more pressure.
Can you suggest what the problem is and how I should go about rectifying it please?  Is anybody else having the same issue?
    Thanking you,

This is what I see but it doesn't quite make sense to me.  One, I don't know why there should be two AUDIO01 files showing.  The still frame which I am trying to add the crossover to is FRTOTSUKA.  It will allow me to add to the end but not to the start.  The same is happening with a couple of other frames.  If I add one to the start it won't allow me to add it to the end.
    Hope I am making sense.
    Thanking you,

  • Odd Time Lengths Displayed In iTunes 9?

Curious question: I recently got a new laptop (details displayed at the bottom) and I downloaded the latest version of iTunes (9.1.1). When I go to add songs and then later on, I edit the silence out of them, the total time of the song is displayed as the original length instead of the fixed length.
Example: I get a song that's 4:16. I take the silence out at the end with Adobe Audition 3.0 and get the song to be 4:11. However, the song's still shown as 4:16 on iTunes but plays correctly 'til 4:11. Plus, it makes that length show like that on my iPod too (iPod Classic). What's up with this?
As the length was getting me annoyed, I tried something different: Editing the silence out and THEN adding the songs to iTunes. It begins to show the correct total time length but sometimes, randomly, I won't even do anything to the song and it'll show a different time length (like it really added seconds onto it or something). For example, I got this song (original length was about 4:34), cut the silence out to 4:33, added it and it would show 4:33 on my iTunes and iPod. Then, outta nowhere, I go to look at it yesterday and it's showing 4:39. Huh, 4:39? Where'd the extra time come from? Yeah, it would play the regular 4:33 but if I wanted to burn a CD and so on, why do I have to be confused with the lengths?
I also remember the other day, I had a lil' something I made of only 5 seconds and when I went to put artwork on it, the time shown went up to 25 seconds. I didn't know what to do so I took the song off my library, re-added it, re-added the artwork and it was the regular, fixed 5 seconds. Still, I don't know why it would even think of jumping to 25 seconds anyway...
What should I do? I don't think I can transfer my library to an older iTunes ('cause I tried that with my 2008 desktop computer and it didn't let me 'cause the iTunes was older). I have a very organized library of all the music and date added stats since I first got iTunes back on June 23, 2004 and I don't want it erased or anything.

Actually, I'm not havin' a problem at all playin' 'em back; it's just how they look. I just checked Windows Media Player and yup, they're displaying the lengths fine. Even when I just check the file info in the folder, it says the correct length without even opening any programs. It might be an iTunes problem.
And, the reason why I'm editing the files is because:
    1. I like to have them converted to 112 kbps (that's my choice 'cause it's smaller on my iPod but still sounds great).
    2. If their volumes are low at times, I like to fix them. Sometimes, the actual artists themselves send me songs and then, I would have to increase the volumes to where it sounds equally the same as other songs.
    3. I don't like to have silence. It's like, I have to wait for an additional 5, 6 seconds 'til the next song. I like things to sound consistent.
    4. With the lengths, I like to play a "guessing game" with myself. Like, when I'm doing my Top 500 Most Played songs on my iPod of the year, I try to guess by last played, times played, genre and time length. Time length is the most important. If the time's screwed up, then it won't be able to register in my head that good...
Overall, I think it's an iTunes problem.

Are you working in iMovie and realize that certain frames in the movie would be perfect as photographs? Here is how to extract them...
*To get a still frame from an Event*, right-click on the frame and select "Add Still Frame to Project". The still will be added to the end of the current project. Right click on the still frame in the project and select "Reveal in Finder". You will see a jpeg file that is highlighted. Drag this jpeg file in the finder to the iPhoto icon on your dock.
*If you want a still from a project*, rather than an event, the process is similar, except you right-click on the frame and select "Add Freeze Frame", and it adds the freeze frame at the end of the clip rather than at the end of the project. Right-click/reveal in Finder, drag JPEG to iPhoto icon in dock.
*If you are not using iPhoto*, and just want to save to your desktop, click Reveal in Finder as above, then COPY, then PASTE to desktop.
Hint: If you do not want to clutter up your iMovie Project with stills at the end that you would have to go back and delete, then create a separate iMovie Project just for your stills, and follow the instructions for capturing stills from an Event.
Note: If you do not have a right mouse button, then control-click will work instead of right-click.

  • Why can't I change the duration of a still frame?

I am running Final Cut Express 3.5.1
When I try to change the duration of a still frame it generally snaps back to the existing duration rather than changing. Occasionally it will change but never to the duration I select which is ususlly :20 to :50 of a second. It sticks on a variety of durations between 1:20 and :05. I have tried both altering and rewriting the duration.I have tried restarting as well as all of the following methods:
1 Changing the duration in the User Preferences > Editing, still duration field.
2 Ammending the browser duration column .
3 Double clicking on the still to open it in the viewer and changing the duration field.
4 Draging the still into the timeline, control clicking and changing the duration in the drop down menu.
5 I also clicked on the still in the browser > edit > item properties but there was no timing tab available to select (as suggested on another posting.)

This project is just a short animation so every time I import the stills they are of the wrong duration so I try changing the duration by the other methods described previously, fail to be able to do that, erase everything from the project, restart and start again, initially with the preferences. So there's nothing for the still frames to conflict with. It's not the fact that there is a batch of stills that is the problem either as I keep experimenting with with single or small groups of stills in that context. I've also tried importing a variety of still formats into other projects. This is fairly new software. Could this be an incurable fault?

  • Imovie 10.0.4 crashes after adjusting 2nd photo time length

After I try to adjust the photo time length imovie 10.0.4 gets the spinning beach ball and imovie says it is not responding, so I have to force quit and reopen.  I finished editing the rest of the video portions of the project with no problems until I attempted to shorten the time length of my photo.  The first photo would adjust fine but after adjusting the second photo it gives the spinning beach ball.  It does this every time after the second photo.  Macbook 10.9.4

Earlier this week Apple released an update to iMovie that has fixed this for a lot of people. Are you running version 9.0.7? You can update to it by running Software Update or checking the Updates tab in the Mac App Store. If it's still crashing after the update, this seems to be doing the trick for a bunch of people: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4319

  • Still Frames Disappear in Project Frame

Working with imovie 08, at work, I capture videos from hdv camera. I have to select short clips of work video and create projects from the clips. Then I use the "add still frame to project", and usually the still frames stay in the project frame while I'm doing this. I then use finder to locate them once I am finished. The stills are now disappearing from the project frame and are no where to be found. I had done this procedure many times (30+) with no problem, now I can't find them anywhere. help!

So what I am realizing is that all of my sequences have been created with incorrect settings, thus greatly downgrading the film quality. I wish I had picked up in this earlier rather than the last bit of my production. Because now the 25 minutes of sequences, and nested sequences are all basically incorrect. I figured that the poor display was related to Premieres program monitor, and that after rendering, it would display more clearly. But that is just impossible, when placing uncompressed progressive footage 1366X768, square pixels and 30fps into sequences that are 720X480, 29.97, and a non-square pixel aspect ratio...
So I'm wondering, is there any way to change the sequence settings  or place all of the edited footage in new, matching sequences without essentially re-editing the whole film?
    Any helpful words are appreciated.

  • Still Frame altered in Photoshop resizes in iMovie

    Hello,
When I export a still frame as a pict file from iMovie and then edit that still frame in photoshop (resaved as a pict file), the file imports back into iMovie resized. It enlarges a bit more than the previous still frame. Does anyone know how to avoid this resize issue?
    Thanks for any help

I am not at home now to verify or play with it first hand, but if I was to take a guess it would probably be because of the 640 vs. 720 conversion iMovie does behind the scenes with the horizontal pixels. See TVs use rectangular pixels while computers use square pixels. TV pixels are slightly taller than wide or put another way, the pixels are thinner than on a computer. So 720 thin TV pixels equal about 640 square computer pixels. What iMovie does is it will show you everything on your screen as 640 horizontal pixels so everything looks correct (height to width ratio looks right and nothing is stretched or squished), but really everything in iMovie is 720 pixels wide because that is the format needed for standard TV sets.
So because of this, and since Apple wants everything very simple for this application, when you import still images, it expects 640x480 (for North American TV; PAL has a different vertical size), which it then will (behind the scenes) convert to 720 thin/TV pixels. If you import something other than that, iMovie will resize accordingly.
OK so here is what I am not sure of but am speculating might be going on but can not check at the moment. When you select a frame and export that frame as a still image, I am guessing you really are getting a 720x480 image. This would be noticeable when opened in your image editor in that the image should now look a bit stretched out horizontally (yes, the camera really does add 10 lbs!). Now you do your edits, save the image which is still 720x480. When you import this image back to iMovie, it sees 720, is expecting 640 and resizes accordingly, so your image ends up pinched in (gets thinner). So on the screen it will tend to look like it got taller, when in fact it instead got pinched from the sides. Is that what you are seeing?
Again I am only guessing here and maybe saving a still out of iMovie gives you a 640x480, in which case none of what I said above applies.
However if it all sounds correct above, then the solution is after you open the file in Photoshop, resize it and this is one of those rare times where you actually want to UNCHECK the box that keeps the ratio of the photo the same. So now you tell it to resize from 720 to 640 but not to change the 480 dimension. Your photo should now look normal (not stretched out) and after editing, saving, and re-importing to iMovie should look correct.

  • Still frames in project - Possible to Save as individual photos?

    Hello ...
I have taken a number of still frames from my video event and made a picture project ...
However when I export it .. it ends up as a video file ...
Is there a way of saving single pictures into iPhoto or whatever ... so that I can use these single pictures in another application ...
Thanks ... for any info ...

Is there a way of saving single pictures into iPhoto or whatever
    1) Select frame in Event window.
    2) Use "Add Still Frame to Project" option to move the selected Event frame to your Project window.
    3) Select the "Still Frame" in the Project window.
    4) Use the "Reveal in Finder" option to select the stored JPEG image.
    5) Image file can then be copied or you can double-click to open it in Preview which will allow you to save a copy to your preferred storage location and, if you wish, change its compression format at the same time.
    6) Now return to iMovie and if the "Still Frame" is not needed in your Project window, simply delete it.

  • Creating a still frame without timex

Hi, I'm wondering if there is a really quick way to create a still frame without using timex (it freezes up my entire tree for some reason when I use it with the keymix layer), without having to render out a single image (I dont want to loose quality) and without having to drag it through timeview (I get real finicky trying to drag the time bar back and forth with the mouse or pen)?
There has got to be an easy way!

Just change it from 1145-1325 to 1-5000 or something(you are allowed to change those values). Either that or do a new filein and only pick the frame you need, not the entire frame sequence and it will automatically set the in and out as infinity(uncheck the "sequence listing" in the file browser).
