Still hesitating...

So... I'm still not sure which one would be the best option for me between these two : A macbook (+external monitor keyboard and mouse for my home) or a Macbook Pro for everything. I won't be using the extra power from the MBP, but I will definitely prefer the 15 inch screen without having to buy an external monitor if I wanna watch a movie/video/serie, etc. It's not my main usage anyway. I'm a french canadian and I have always worked with a french keyboard and loved it. An option was to get a refurbished MBP for 1899$ instead of 2050$. But it's on the english canadian website, not the french one, so the keyboard will be in english and the os too i guess... so, it may be not ideal for me. I don't need raw power... My usual situation is simple multitasking, 1 to 4 websites + word + itunes + messenger... Both computers could handle it well and both seem really great for my needs. I'm not sure how often I will have to carry it around, but i know that it won't stay at home everyday. That's my dilemna at the moment. The prices are pretty much 1350 and 2050, a huge difference for 2 more inches on the screen... What do you guys think about that? If you need any more infos the help me better tell me.

i'm sure i'll have apple fan boys all over my butt for this...
if your multitasking consists of Word, Websites, iChat, and iTunes.... DO NOT waste your money on a Pro. apple products are overpriced (there i said it). unless you plan on running some intense 3D graphics or something along those lines just don't waste your money. the macbook will even run photoshop, illustrator, and other intense applications just fine. the gap is slowly closing between the Pros and MacBooks... theres tons of articles on the internet about it.
2.0Ghz Core2Duo is plenty fast enough and the 9400M gpu will do just fine for everyday use. if you need extra RAM or HD space and feel comfortable popping the thing open, you can save A TON of money replacing and adding RAM/HDs yourself. you'll pay at least 1/2 if you do the upgrades yourself.
and yes $700 is a lot to spend if you want a bigger screen. go ahead and get a nice display for that price, one that's far larger than 15" and looks just as nice as an Apple Display.

  • Album artwork not showing on iPod touch 5th gen

    Hey guys,
I really need help on this. The issue has been bugging me the last several weeks and it is driving me nuts.
After I updated my iPod touch to 6.1.3 as well as itunes on my windows to ver.11.0.2.26 (or the one before),
I could no longer add album art to any of the new songs I add to my iPod.
The weird thing is that album arts are there in itunes under get info ---> artwork,
but they just never show on the actual screen of iPod touch no matter what I do. I tried to hit the sync button,
remove/add the songs back to itunes again, even restored the iPod touch but didn't do a thing. Now all the previous songs' artworks are gone.
I like to organize all songs manually so are all the artworks. I google the image and copy/paste to each song by going under get info ---> artwork
Tried to get album artworks using the itunes feature but since some of the songs I have are foreign songs, so it wouldn't work either.
I also don't use library to organize my music since I have some duplicates and they just look really messy in library.
I simply just drag and drop music on the iPod itself.
Is anybody out there having the same issue? I called Apple and they had no clue to why.
It worked perfectly fine until the last update. Now I am really regretting the update. All the songs are now showing nothing but music
note on the screen with title and artist name.
    Help will be appreciated!

Glad to know I wasn't the only one with this issue.
As an update to my issue, the album artwork all the sudden reappeared on my iPod yeasterday.
Still don't know the actual cause or what actually got itself fixed but here's how I did:
    - Back up your iPod first. Since I didn't have much to lose on my iPod, for those who have alot of stuff on there should promptly do so just in case.
    - Go to this link: http://www.doctorchewy.com/album-artwork-woes/
      and follow the procedures.
    - Some people might get the album artwork back working properly again by the end of the procedure above, but it still didn't work for me so I suspected it was itunes so I uninstalled the itunes from my PC and reinstalled.
    - It still didn't want to show album artwork after reinstallation so instead of synching it to the PC, I used my Macbook (OSX 10.6.8) and downloaded the older version itunes (10.7) through here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1576
    - It still didn't show after days followed but while I almost bang my head against the screen, I figured
    that go to get info------> artwork, click add, select the image file, click ok, and if it still wouldn't show;
click on the image and delete the image. Repeat the previous step once again, and it should start synching to your iPod after hitting ok. If it doesn't sync automatically, hit sync and voila. The album artwork should once again, show on your iPod like before.
Again, the process is somewhat hectic but hey, it works now. I'm still hesitant to sync with the newest itunes though. I don't know how my iPod was able to sync with a PC and my Macbook but I was able to manage and keep all the stuff, minus the music, before the problem occured. Let me know how you guys did.

  • HP Laser Jet P2055 slow when printing Excel documents or from databases.

I work for a company that is deploying 100s of this model of printer and for some reason Excel documents and print jobs sent from databases print out extremely slowly. It takes 2 to 7 seconds per page depending on what is being printed.
The way we are setup is with a Windows 2008 print server with print queues on it. We use only the HP universal print driver on this particular print server and it is against our standards to install the printers locally. Also all of our printers have been updated to the firmware 20101025
After doing a lot of troubleshooting I found that this appears to happen anytime I use either of the following printer drivers with this printer.
HP Universal Print Driver ver 5.01, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3 Both in Windows XP and in Windows 7 and with both PCL 5 and PCL 6.
HP 2055 PCL 6 ver. 61 in Both Windows XP and in Windows 7.
I have also tried connecting the printer locally to see if that helps but I experience the same issues. So far the only work around I have found is to use an older print driver for a down level printer. For example the P2015 and 1320n print drivers appear to work better though there is still a slight delay.
An additional step I tried is leaving the tray open when I send the print job. This appears to force the printer to spool the print job correctly though there is still hesitation it just isn't as pronounced. For example with a 10 page Excel document once I push the tray back in the printer will print 4 pages then pause, print 3 more pages, then pause, then print 2 more pages, pause then print the final page. This has happened with all 5 P2055x printers that I have tested it on.
Please help, we need to get this resolved because this particular printer is the only model we are currently allowed to use. I'm hoping a newer firmware than 20101025 might be on the way?

  • Nokia Drive on Windows Phone- the future. What can...

    Hi Everyone,
The question is obviously pointed towards Nokia representatives here, but we're all probably interested in, more or less. So:
What can we expect from Nokia Drive (and Maps...) in future? Are we gonna be given back at least the basic functionality of what there was/is in Symbian Maps version?
    Precisely, I mean:
    - Destination selection basing on tapping the screen + FAVORITES
    - Route calculation customization (fast, short etc.)
    - Advanced planning, including multiple points on the route
    - POI handling in an up-to-date manner (menus and lists of POIs)
    - ... integration with ovi.com web service
I'm still hesitating between new Lumias and Android phones and, to be honest, Nokia Drive seems to be the deal breaker for me.
Another reason for asking is that, while we have a lot of info about Nokia Drive 3.0 featuring live traffic and all the magic stuff, that info still doesn't say anything about re-introducting the very basic functions of navi system.
I can imagine that maanny people think the same way and aren't happy with the navigation functionality drop with the WP introduction to Nokia.
    Thanks!
    Michael

    @jamiekt
No reason to assume that they won't get updated 3 - 4 times a year as Nokia Maps upon Symbian OS devices do currently.

  • In search of drivers for ATI Radeon 7000

I recently purchased a used ATI Radeon 7000 PCI video card for my G3 beige, OS 9.2.2. This is an older model card with just the single VGA output. This comes up as card name "ATI, Bluestar", and card model "ATI, RV100" under Apple System Profiler so I'm a bit confused about that to start with. However, since ASP recognizes it I guess it seems to work though I haven't plugged my monitor into it yet.
    The problem is the drivers.
I went to ATI's website to look for drivers to download to get this card working. They have an OS9 updater (ati-retail-9-2-2-jan2005.hqx) that should install a bunch of components. When I run it it only installs a partial set, contrary to what it says it should do. I've seen other postings on Apple Discussions about problems with this installer. ATI seems to make it impossible to contact them other than by telephone which is only open to original purchasers so I can't even tell them there's a problem (much less expect them to do anything about it). A search for Bluestar or RV100 reveals nothing on ATI's website.
Has anybody gotten this installer to work? Is there some other source for drivers for this card? Can somebody e-mail them to me (I don't think this violates any rules since in theory they are openly down-loadable)?
    Thanks,
    Brian
    G3 beiges:DT, 9.2.2, 120GBide; DT, 9.2.2/OS X.3, 120GBide; MT, 8.6/9.2.2, 128MB,

Thanks to all for answering my questions. I decided in the end to just plug my monitor into the card and give it a try despite not haveing the groundwork properly set up. It works so it must be a Mac version of the card. This website (http://www.welovemacs.com/radeon7000vga.html) describes the card, including the model number (but I paid a LOT, LOT less than their price!).
Yes, the installer does put all kinds of things in the System, but not the promised control panel. It looks like the CP isn't essential to the working of the card so I'm not worrying anymore. I used the Apple monitors control panel to set the resolution a few times but it froze up on me once when setting it to 640x480. After that I pulled a copy of Super Res that I had in storage and have been using that.
As to the graphics acceleration, it's kind of hard to tell. I tried viewing a mp4 video clip I have with Quicktime 6. Before the card I could maybe watch a minute before my computer would freeze up. Now I can watch maybe 3 minutes before it freezes up, but the video is very jerky, even when compared to the one minute before card installation. I may now be experiencing the limitations of my 266 MHz G3 in terms of decoding mp4, but this doesn't explain why video seemed smoother before, brief though it was before a freeze.
I then tried a video game. Actually video wasn't too slow with this even with my old configuration. Now things seem to hesitate when the play gets busy and it remids me of when I used to play Crystal Quest on a Mac SE. In this case the card has made things slower.
With general scrolling I don't really notice a difference. There's still hesitation at times. In all the cases I have mentioned the ATI thing in the menu bar says grahics acceleration is on.
So in actuality I haven't really noticed any improvement with this card. If anybody has any tips on ways to tune the system to take more advantage of the card I'd welcome them.
    Thanks,
    Brian

  • I have 35 GB worth of photos i need to move off my laptop.. HELP! (more)

Whew am i glad i found this forum! Here is my dilemia. I have 35 GB of photos in my iphoto program on my mbp. I have them backedup on dvds but i am still hesitant to move them off my laptop.. crazy i know. Anyway.... we have a G4 (with additional memory in it) that we use for media storage and an imac that i could use to store my photos. I need to get these off my laptop.. and i want to start shooting in RAW and i cant do that until i move to free up space on my laptop.
What i want to do is move the entire library off my laptop. Do i put a copy on the imac and on the G4? and then just import new photos onto my laptop and then save the new photos to the imac/g4 monthly? Can i automate this provess? What about keeping a back up "off site" are there any online places i can use?
I dont have any idea what the best way to do this is.... thoughts?
    MBP 17 inch   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

WOW thanks for the quick response!
i think at this point im looking to just store them elsewhere. I think i will leave a few "favorites" on my laptop but i want to get the bulk of them off my laptop. -- i wouldnt run iphoto off another machine or external drive thru my laptop .. i think for the most part those pictures im done with editing and/or putting them into imovies. I just wanna have them stored somewhere else for back up purposes to free up space on my laptop. ...
does that make a difference w/ what i should do next?

  • Trying to understand low SSD lifetime

Hi. I’ve been using an OCZ Onyx SSD for two years and today had a look at its SMART values. I’m told the disk has already reached half of its lifetime:
    205 Max_PE_Count_Spec 0x0000 --- --- --- Old_age Offline - 5000
    206 Min_Erase_Count 0x0000 --- --- --- Old_age Offline - 792
    207 Max_Erase_Count 0x0000 --- --- --- Old_age Offline - 3838
    208 Average_Erase_Count 0x0000 --- --- --- Old_age Offline - 2513
    209 Remaining_Lifetime_Perc 0x0000 --- --- --- Old_age Offline - 50
    This seems wrong because:
User Capacity: 64,023,257,088 bytes [64.0 GB]
    Sector Size: 512 bytes logical/physical
    199 Write_Sectors_Tot_Ct 0x0000 --- --- --- Old_age Offline - 1881433528
According to these values 1881433528*512 = 963293966336 bytes have been written to the disk (963 GB).
According to OCZ (pdf) the formula to measure the amount of data that can be written to an SSD is: DriveSize * PECycles / WriteAmplification, and the worst possible write amplification is 17.
    For my disk that makes: 64 GB * 5000 / 17 = 18823 GB.
    Which would give a remaining lifetime of: 100 - 100 * 963 / 18823 = 94%!
And we’re talking of a worst case scenario here.
    So what is wrong?
The 963 GB of data written to the disk corresponds to about 1.3 GB per day, which seems plausible since I’ve taken care not to write too much on the SSD. I still have pacman’s cache on the SSD, but not Firefox’ cache. I remember using iotop to measure my disk usage and finding that it was low enough (though maybe I didn’t measure disk writes during an update… I don’t remember that.)
I’m using LVM and its snapshot feature (every time I backup&update arch, and the snapshot is removed after the backup is done) but without encryption. Filesystem is ext4 with options discard, noatime, commit=60. There is no swap partition.
My SSD has firmware 1.6 and I see that 1.7 has a fix for a bug that could possibly cause extra wear, but they don’t say how much:
    - Enhancement: Change of the behavior of meta data save. With 1.6 FW, there could be such cases that will save the whole meta data even when it is not necessary, for example, during idle time. It depends on usage. Now, the policy of saving meta data is fine-tuned
    - Bug fix: Sanitary erase may corrupt write log history. It was fixed.
Can someone see what is going on?

Maybe true with older generation models, but the Vertex 4 is a great product.
Yes it uses a new controller, too. They learned a bit there. Haven't heard of any common problems with it.
Still as a company they lost a lot of reputation will take them a long time to regain it.
Ah yes, this brings back memories...
Lost all data on home partition, would really appreciate advice
It's a bit irrational, but i am still hesitant to buy an OCZ ssd again, some 5 years later...

  • Oracle 11g table compression feature

Is anybody using Oracle 11g's compression feature in production? I read a whitepaper on this and also read some forums/threads on this topic and so far I haven't read anything negative yet, that doesn't meant that there isn't anything that could have an adverse affect. I wanted to check with you guys out there to see if anyone is really using is this feature in production and see if there are any affects on the performance or any disadvantages of using this compression feature. I have tested this on one my major tablespace and I did see a big difference in the reduce size on the tablespace but I am still hesitated to put this into production. I would like to hear from you guys to see what you guys think?

  • Very slow performance; external boot drive the cause?

    Greetings.
I bought a 500 GB Hitachi drive for my iMac intending to install it myself. But, alas, I have an iSight iMac and I think it's beyond my ability to do the job. A Mac dealer nearby can do it for me, but wants the computer for two or three days, even thought the installation takes about an hour. They will not make an appointment for me to come in with it and wait.
So I installed it the drive in an OWC Mercury Elite case, cloned the original drive, and have been booting from the Hitachi via Firewire 400. Just about everything is running at well under previous speeds. Lightroom now takes as much as two to five minutes to spool a large file for printing and sometimes does not even send the file to the printer (in fairness, the latter issue happened sometimes with the internal drive – I wrote about it here before – but at least it didn't take a long time to spool the file, which has to happen each time I click "print" until at last it actually goes to the printer).
I'm getting slow performance from Safari (4.1.3), Mail (2.1.3), Lighroom 2, Photoshop (CS3). I can't say I've noticed problems elsewhere, but I rarely use other applications.
I have done all the usual maintenance tasks, besides those the computer does automatically. Repaired permissions. Emptied caches. Burned sage. Etc.
If this is the inevitable result of running from an external disk, then I'll have to brave the installation or pay someone to do it (which I would do immediately if I knew someone who would do it "while-u-wait").
If, however, this sounds like booting from the external drive should not be the problem, and there is something I might do to speed things up, I'd be grateful for your suggestions.
    As always, thank you.
    Leonard B.

Too bad about the site redesign. I had a draft of this message started, then got busy. Now I have no idea where to look for it. (And what happened to the Preview function?)
ANYWAY…  I talked to a tech person at Other World Computing about the problem. He was of the opinion that the iMac SHOULD be showing some slower response if booted from the external drive, but that maybe the sluggishness in this case was excessive. He had me run a hardware scan to see whether there were any bad blocks. After 24 hours, Speed Tools reported no problems. So now I have run every diagnostic and repair tool I know of and every one that was suggested (every one that I own, that is), and the computer is still hesitating so much that I just have to get up and walk away from it sometimes in order to stay sane.
I am booting from the original hard drive when I have to do extended internet research (Safari being the biggest speed offender), but run the iMac from the external drive when I have to do photo editing, since all my preferences, Lightroom libraries, etc., are located there. If I had the time to figure out just where the essential, and relevant, system and application files are located, I suppose that I could copy them and move them onto the internal drive. Then I could just use the external for storage of the image files (can't do that on the internal; there's not enough space). However, if what is going on (slowness issue) is indicative of a faulty drive, I'd rather not use it at all, even as a storage or backup drive.
Any thoughts? Do you suppose this might be a problem with the computer, not with the new drive? I'd hate to ask OWC to exchange it (even if they would do that) and then find out I've got the same trouble.
    Thanks again in advance.
    Leonard

  • MacBook 17" C2D is.....PERFECT

just got a 17" MBP C2D, used the migration assistant to transfer everything from my PowerBook 1.67 2 Gs of RAM. and the transfer was a success.
everyhting works just fine, even Office.
FCP flies compared to PB 1.67, WIFI is perfect, better reception than the PB
and now let's talk about the screen, many users have discussed issues like uneven lighting, grain...
this screen is much much better than the PB 1.67, way smoother, less grany and brighter. I love it
Grain is so present in my PB's screen not on the MBP.
as for speed, well, I did a small rendering test using a short FCP sequence. it took 45 secondes for the PB to complete while the MBP did it in just 15 seconds.
huge is the difference and for those who are still hesitating I would strongly recommend the switch. it's really worthy.

You can be so lucky. It's all about perception. I bought my son a MBP Core Duo (Rev A) and yes it was a lot warmer than the C2D and yes we could hear the whine. The thing is I have 17" PowerBook 1.33 Ghz and I am used to it getting quite hot along with the LCD not having even backlighting and the only reason I paid any attention to the whine is because of people complaining about it on these forums.
But for the fact of reading these posts I wouldn't have given the whine a second thought, as far as I am concerned it's just another computer noise that I wouldn't have paid attention to because the computer functions perfectly. Do I think these are problems or issues? Nope. Should I expect perfection at any cost? Nope. Nothing's ever perfect.

  • Slow profile manager

    Hi gurus!
Got a clean install of server 10.7.4 with all updates done. DNS and Opendirectroy are runnung ok and I have no firewall.
For some reason, Profile Manager is terribly slow; it takes him up to 10 minutes to update a workstation; is that normal?
I'm working at night with no traffic on the network, testing 4 machines out of 70.
I've also seen that the devices can be set to be update manually; is that a good option. If yes, can you force that from the workstation or is it pushed by the slow server?
I'm still hesitating to implement this in our school, can anybody give me a strong advice, like "don't use it" or "great stuff" ?
Help and shared experience would be much appreciated.
    Thanks, Guy

    Hi,
Thanks for your feedback and sorry for the late answer. In facts, doing that operation takes ages…
Somehow it is as if a firewall (there's none) was blocking something. If you look at the attached screenshot you'll notice that this simple "update info" operation is really slow. I don't know what those values should be or what they are on your server.
    Is there any error log… I don't think so…
Thanks for your feedback on that, Guy

  • My next laptop...

    Hi guys (and girls),
I'm starting college soon in multimedia and I need a computer for homeworks. At school, we'll use both Windows PCs and Mac (not sure yet about which models). So I taught I'd be better buying a Mac so I can run both OS X and Windows XP on it.
A couple years ago, I used an iBook G4 and had a **** of a hard time with it, the logic board, LCD screen, video card problems... name it, I had them. So I'm still hesitating speding almost 2000$ on yet another Mac laptop.
So my question is : does the overall quality of the new MacBook vs. the iBook G4 has been been raised?
Also, I know that BootCamp isn't emulation or virtualization of Windows. It's native right? And if it's native, does it still run as fast as a Windows laptop? Because for my multimedia applications I'll need full speed processing on both operating systems.
    I appreciate your help!
    Cédrik

all computers have problems.. some more than others..
    your G4 experience sounds ruff..
i have had two issues with my macbook 1 batt died and hard drive died (managed to save the data on it though "lucky") no issues since then all were fixed fast..
native speeds for window via bootcamp.. a pc mag voted the macbook pro the best laptop for vista..

  • Any problems with i5/i7 yet?

All you lucky people that received their i5/i7 Quads.... anyone having the C2D problems like screen flickerings, black outs, slow flash.....??? I cancelled my order when I saw all those problems and is still hesitating to place my order again. Until I know the problems are/or being solved, I really wonder if I should wait a bit longer. Please let me know it's safe to reorder.. please please please..

Well my i5 arrived at 3.15 this afternoon. No problems setting it up. Very user friendly. Connected to wireless hub without any problems whatsoever. No cracked screen, no noisy fans, can hardly hear the hard drive. Connected an external to do system backup. The full backup only took about 20 minutes using firewire 800. Have tried playing this video and looked at activity monitor of flash.
    http://www.flashvideofactory.com/test/DEMO720Heima_H264500K.html
It got up to 75-80%. No jerkiness. Been into Youtube and played some video in there without any problems. Couldn't get BBC Iplayer going in HD mode but that is due to a slow connection at this time of day. I'll try that again later when all the kids are tucked up in bed!
So far I am absolutely thrilled and love the wireless keyboard and magic mouse. This is the first Mac I have owned and I have no regrets whatsoever. It looks and feels like quality kit.
