Still image size?

Hello, Can someone please tell me the best file size and type of picture to use in a standard DV 4:3 project? Should I resize my pictures to 720x480 and if so what resolution, 72dpi or higher? Also when I capture in FCP it tells me that my audio capture does not match the project. My camera audio is set to 16bit. How do I set my project to match? It tells me that the audio might not match the video but it seems to be spot on. Thanks for your help.
One more thing, I just installed FCS 2. When I used compressor I noticed that I get that beach ball when I try to do just about anything. Seems like every click of the mouse from one location to another causes the system to think a bit. Anyone else notice this? thanks again!

This is about the still image size changing from what I see on the computer monitor and what the burned DVD shows on the TV

I have Prem.El 12 and have used PE4 for years. I have a new PC that runs Win7Pro. The still images on the computer monitor are within the "safe margins". The still images after the movie has been burned to a disk are MUCH smaller on the TV screen. Is this an issue of 16:9 vs 4:3 ratios? My TV is 4:3. Can I tell PE12 to make the movie a 4:3?

I am still trying to buy some DVD-RW discs and will hopefully do that in a
bit. Meanwhile, I have more info for you and some simple (I hope)

My camera (for stills and video) is set to the 4:3 ratio. It is capable of
being set to a 16:9 ratio if I wanted to do that. I looked in its TOOLS
menu and saw this info.
My TV is definitely a 4:3 TV. (I measured it with my tape measure and
divided W/L to get 1.33) The TV can show a 16:9 movie and just adds the
black bars on the top and bottom. Question: What will my old 4:3 movies
look like on a 16:9 TV whenever we buy one of those?
It seems to me that I want to set PE12 to the NTSC DV Standard you
mentioned.
I do NOT know how to “size your photos so that each has a 4:3 aspect”,
unless you mean doing that in Photoshop Elements, which I know how to do
(*see below)
I had NOT considered that I would need to watch the preset for the
‘Publish+Share’ step; so that’s good to know (I copied and pasted your info
for later use).
BTW, years ago when I had difficulties with my XP computer working on PE4
(had only 2 GB RAM), an Adobe tech told me to resize my photos * to have a
720 pixel width (the height would be automatically adjusted) to lower the
file size to something my computer could handle without crashing. (That
was back in the good ol’ days when Adobe support would actually talk with
their customers and try to help them in the first month)
My new computer has 16GB RAM. Do you think I still need to reduce file
size? One does lose some sharpness in the resizing process…..however,
these videos I’m making are travelogues and are for a fun way to view pics
and videos of a trip…nothing Earth shattering….and just a hobby to keep me
off the streets.
I truly appreciate the time you take to help me (and others). I was even
tempted to try to install my old PE4 on my new computer just to be able to
enjoy my hobby again.
My reply to the above....
1. If you camera is giving you 4:3 photos and your Premiere Elements 12/12.1 is running on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 64 bit, then leave
the photos as is unless you have a lot of photos and each has pixel dimensions sizes way over 1920 x 1080 pixels that are giving your computer resource issues. If you have to down size them because of computer resources, then copy the photos to a computer desktop folder and also create an empty folder on the computer desktop.
a. Photoshop Elements Editor, File Menu/Process Multiple Files.
Process Files form Folder
Source - browse to and select the computer desktop folder with photos to be resized
Destination - browse to and select the empty computer desktop folder
Image Size
             Check Mark Next To Resize Images
            (no check mark next to Constrain Proportions)
            Type in Width = 1000 (set units for pixels)
            Type in Height = 750 (set unites for pixels)
File Size
           Check Mark Next to Convert Files To
           Set for JPEG High Quality
The above should work fine for a NTSC DV Standard project with a burn to DVD disc with preset NTSC_Dolby DVD (4:3 video).
2. With regard to the TV Set and 16:9 video....when you have the DVD-player attached to the TV, do you have the opportunity to bring up a display of menus with
controls for Picture and Aspect Ratio? From what you have written so far, it looks like the answer is no. I am not sure how your TV DVD
player will handle 16:9.
Best do a mini test run
1. Project preset set manually to NTSC DV Widescreen (please refer to post 1 link)
A few photos sized for 1600 x 1200
In the Premiere Elements project, use the Safety Margins inner rectangle for text placement
Publish+Share/Disc/DVD disc with preset = NTSC_Widescreen_Dolby DVD.
See what that looks like on your TV DVD player.
If you discovered that your current TV DVD player can be set for a 16:9 display, then I have a preferred workflow for
NTSC DV Widescreen which typically gives best possible results. Hints of things to come.

Still image sizes in Premiere Pro CS5.5

I've been looking for quite a while on Adobe's help pages, these forums, and also the PDF manual, but can't find the info I'm looking for.
I'm moving from Final Cut Studio to the Adobe suite of video production for various reasons. I've purchased (though not yet received) the Production Premium upgrade. I have a new project I'm starting, and want to correctly size my images for Premiere Pro. For instance, Final Cut Studio has this handy chart:

So for a standard 4:3 DV NTSC video, I make my still images 720 x 540 pixels. 16:9 anamorphic, 853 x 480.
For whatever reason, this type of information is completely missing in the manuals for CS5.5. I did however find this information related to Premiere Pro 4:
4:3 DV (NTSC) or ATSC SD—create and save the square-pixel file at 720x534.
4:3 D1 (NTSC)—create and save the square-pixel file at 720x534.
4:3 DV or D1 (PAL)—create and save the file at 788x576.
16:9 DV (NTSC)—create and save the file at 864x480.
16:9 D1 (NTSC)—create and save the file at 872x486.
16:9 DV or D1 (PAL)—create and save the file at 1050x576.
16:9 1080i HD—create and save the file at 1920x1080.
16:9 720p HD—create and save the file at 1280x720.
So did this apply to CS5.5 as well? Meaning if I'm creating a standard 4:3 DV NTSC video, my still images should be 720 x 534, and 16:9 anamorphic 864 x 480? Not quite sure what the distinction is between DV and D1, other than the anamorphic sizes are different.
I also know these are different from Final Cut Studio. In Apple's manuals, they come right out and say the pixel sizes FCS uses for stills are different from most video editing software. So I'm not surprised to see 720 x 534 for for 4:3 NTSC in Premiere Pro rather than Apple's size of 720 x 540.

The list is valid if you save the file in square pixels.
However, I believe there is an easier way if one has
Photoshop.
In Photosohop, you can change the image pixel
aspect ratio directly. The drop down for that parameter lists common video formats.
Change the PAR first (e.g., 1.33) and then, using the crop tool set for the frame dimensions, e.g., 1440 x 1080. Save the file. Premiere will recognize the image format. There's no reason to keep track of what the square pixel frame size is.
You can create Photoshop Actions to somewaht automate this process.

Still image size when importing to Premiere Pro CS3

I was wondering if someone could help me. I do a lot of Still Image Slide shows with music and all that jazz and I used to use Premiere 6.5. When I would import the still images I could just lock the aspect ratio and it would automatically size the picture to fit the screen. I recently upgraded to CS3 and when I try to import a photo it imports it at actual image size so if the pic to too big it just looks zoomed in. I'm wonder if there is a setting in I can adjust so it autosizes the pic like it did in version 6.5? It may sound lazy but I do these with a lot of picture and I don't have time to adjust the size of each photo in Photoshop prior to import.
I have figured out a temporary workaround where I import the files into 6.5 and then open the existing project in CS3 but my new computer runs Vista and it's not allowing me to install 6.5 on it. I would appreciate any help.

Still image size for 16:9 video

I want to crop and resize my images before bringing them in to PE10 on my iMac running lion. What pixel dimensions are best? The preview of my first image in the playback viewer is terrible. I used 1920 wide by 1080 high in my export settings for the image editer (Lightroom).

I Scale and Crop all of my Still Images in Photoshop (PSElements works well too), to exactly the pixel x pixel dimensions of my Project's Frame Size. If one needs to Pan on a Zoomed Out Still Image, then I would calculate the Pan, and Scale/Crop to that size. You do not want to have overly-large Still Images. This ARTICLE goes into much more detail, and will show how to Automate to>Batch with Actions in PS/PSE.

What is the optimum still image size for use in Premiere Pro?

I'm pretty new to Premiere Pro so please excuse any extreme stupidity.
I'm creating a film comprised of various interview footage. I intend to drop in stills (and possibly scan and pan around on them). The still images are coming from various sources and will have been shot on various formats.
I requested high res images but have been asked what size I want the images to be in mm. Can anyone advise?
The resulting film will be shown on Vimeo and on a website, but there is also further scope for high def projection possibly. The film is HD 1080x1920

Make sure that whoever is supplying stills is measuring them in PIXELS. Not MM, not Inches, not DPI - but PIXELS. Nothing else matters in video.
Your "canvas" in Premiere will be 1920x1080 pixels (for 1080 HD), so that is the minimum size any still ought to be in order to fill the frame without having to scale it up (quality loss). Of course, if the image is portrait-style, then it will NOT fill the frame, but rather will have black on the sides, or replacement background as others have suggested. In that case, make sure that the height is then at least 1080 pixels (width will be narrower than 1920).
You said you wanted to pan and scan, like Ken Burns, so then you'd want images larger than the 1920x1080, such as the 3456x2304 that was suggested. This allows you to zoom in to some degree using available pixels in the image without actually upscaling the image at all. The more you wish to zoom in, the more pixels you need to accomplish that without degrading the quality by "blowing up" the image.

Still image size limit?

Is there a pixel count limit for still images one wishes to use in iMovie '09? I want to do a long Ken Burns from top to bottom over a piece of art around 10,000 pixels tall.

I couldn't get the tall image (10800 pixels tall--a credit roll) to even enter the timeline. So I shrank it to 7200 pixels tall and it did enter the timeline and I could do a looooong KB move. It animated okay, but the image of the letters was fuzzy junk. There must be some unpublished internal limit and it would be nice to know what that is for more normal KB moves...

I'm editing an HD video with several formats, 1920x1080, 1440x1080 and 1280x720. I was asked what format (TIFF, PNG, J-peg?) and size some graphics and pictures should be that will be created for the video. I would appreciate any advice.

Make the graphics the same size as your project resolution (1080 or 720 square pixels).
You really don't have to resize the photos but if you have a lot of them it might make editing easier. If you do resize, for stills without pans and zooms make one dimension the same as the project frame size (width for landscape and height for portrait) and with pans/zooms, I'd do double the project frame's width or height.

Question: How can I change still image sizes in Program Monitor

All of a sudden, when I create a new title, it saves it as 1920 x 1080. But my video is only 720 x 480. I had hoped it was just the view in the Program monitor, but I saved the project, exported it and viewed it, and sure enough, my full page titles fill the entire screen, but my video is a tiny box in the middle of it. I have tried to change the titles properties but can't figure out how. I then changed the export size to 720 x 480, but it didn't help.

Correct your sequence settings or create a new sequence with the correct settings and import your existing sequence into it.

FCP still image size limits? Working with still panoramics.....

I am working on a project with panoramic stills. Usually I make panos with more than 1 picture hight, lets say something like an array of 3x4 pictures, that ends in a typical resolution of something like 15.000 x 5.000. I like to make some motion with the pictures inside FCP since they are great situations to show entirely. Those pictures goes into FCP without problem, but when I tried to render them (in order to show them) get a "General Error" window......
I tried later to test different heights in order to find if there was a limit. Initially I made them smaller and limited them up to 1080 pixels (since I am working at full HD) and they work without a problem with motion TAB inside FCP. Later I tried to make them bigger and up to 2000, 1500 and 1200 pixels height and they NOT worked, but with a test up to 1150 they worked and FCP could render them.
Somebody knows this issue or limit?
Is there other way to work with moving panos at FCP?

I did several tests with different height and wide pixels and found that for wide it up to 15.000 pixels the pictures can be motioned as panos in FCP without problems.
However, no more than 1.100 pixels wide is possible since that anoying window error just saying "General Error", as you get usually at windows OS systems.
So the 4.000 x 4.000, from my "on field" experiencie, it is not a limit, moreover the height on those kind of pictures indeed put a limit in my panos.

Since downloading the 2013 Keynote upgrade, the slide image size on handouts with 3 slides per page option is very small. Is there a way to make the slide size larger while still keeping 3 slides per page lines?

With the new Keynote upgrade (version 6.1), the slide image size on handouts is very small, which makes it difficult to read slide content when compiling lecture notes for students. Is there a way to make the slide size larger while still keeping to a format of 3 slides per page with lines?

A number of posts have reported the same issue, two workarounds:

check the paper handling options or equivalent in your print dialogue box and set to scale to fit

in the Keynote option, in the dropdown menu in the Print section, select Individual Slides
then choose Layout, and set the number of pages, when printed you will have multiple pages on a single sheet.

Why are still images importing larger than their size?

Per instructions in a thread I had here last week, I created all of my DVD still images at 720 x 534 pixels for Premiere Pro CS5.5. But when they are brought into a DVCPRO50 NTSC Standard sequence, they are being heavily clipped. The original in one example is this:
But when that same images is brought into PP, it is sized up like this:
It's still proportionally correct, but a lot of the top and bottom of the image are gone. The encoded MPEG-2 sequence and disk I've done as a test display just like that.
Why is PP doing this, and how can I get it to use images built to the correct size to be used 1:1 in a sequence instead of being scaled to about 115% of size? Hate to compare this way, but this was never an issue with Final Cut Pro, which I'm switching from. Stills created to the size FCP needed of 720 x 540 displayed and finished exactly as they were made in Photoshop. The only image area lost was the normal bit of overscanning DVDs display at on your TV.

I guess I don't understand. This is an excerpt from the CS help. This seems to be inconsistent with what the last two posts said.

Size of Custom Still Image Transcoding Settings

I need Custom Still Images, but want them not to exceed 40kb in size. Is there any way to control the size of a custom Still Image?

I don't believe so in FCP 1.1.1, but if I am not mistaken 1.5 has that capability.

What size still images work best for iMovie to create a book trailer?

I'm trying to create a book trailer using still images and text in iMovie. I purchased some 280px images from gettyimage and find they are too small. When viewed on a full screen the images are degraded. What size still image works best to make a book trailer in iMovie that will be posted on You Tube. Thanks in advance. I am an iMovie newbie.

iM supports a max. export resolution of 1920x1080 pixel ..
if you need to add Ken Burns effects, res should be, of course, higher..
no such thing as 'dpi' with video, only absolute pixels count ..
due to the many conversion processes happening on import, processing and export, care for as less compression as possible for the imported files ..
this YT-demo is done in iM09 with some pics from my Lib, native res of originals is ~6Mpix/~3MB size/jpegs ..
