Still Images Going Black

I am working in Pro CS3. It's a HP 1.8 with 2 gig of RAM. I keep importing still pictures in different projects (different pictures in different projects). They keep coming up black. They do recover or if you click on them enough they do come back that way. Is it a RAM issue or settings. I can't seem to find the solution.
Thanks,
Steve

As well as size, I have read that pictures created by a device that puts "extra" information in the file header won't work well... solution is the same as Jim gave, open in a known good photo editor and resave so the extra header information is stripped away

  • Cropping bug: part of image goes black

A strange problem which cropped up after installing 3.2, and remains after re-installing 3.2.
When I go to crop a vertical image, the top 1/3 of the image goes black.  I can still select what I want (guessing for the border in the black part) and, when I complete the crop, I get the whole image I want, with no black.
Interestingly, if I rotate the vertical to horizontal, I can crop with no black part.  So I can use that to crop, and then rotate back to vertical.  But there's clearly a bug here.
    Any suggestions?

You are probably experiencing the crop and or onscreen proofing bug that was introduced with AP 3.2 update. It is summarized well in the posts on this page:
    http://www.apertureexpert.com/
We need to wait for Apple to fix this one (or you can look at some of the other posts in this forum for reverting back to 3.1.3 until the fix is issued).

  • Images going black

I use a Dual G5 2.5GHz with 2 GB ram. I shoot my images with a Nikon D200 in raw format. The G5 has a ATI Rad9800 XT with 256 MB DDR using a 23 inch Apple display. I have two internal 250GB 7200rpm drives plus 3 external 250GB LaCie drives.
I'm running the latest version of OSX.
Ever since I upgraded to Aperture 1.2 I have been experiencing images going black after I have been working for 5-10 minutes and using the crop tool or even the exposure tool. I thought version 1.5 would eliminate the problem.
Is it my system? Should I add more ram? De-frag the hard drive?
Do I have to upgrade my video card?
Could all of my external firewire drives be causing any problems?
(Maybe I should try Aperture with all of the drives off ??)
It's just getting a little frustrating having a lot of images to work with and then running into the blacked out image with high regularity.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated !

I also have the same problem (Dual 2.0GHz G5 with 2.5GB RAM and Radeon 9650 gfx card at 1920x1200 res screen - all my photos are RAW Canon 20D).
It almost seems like a problem with how the graphics card handles it's image overlays. I find the black image will often appear if I try and switch between images before the previous one has completed its display adjustments (i.e. the status monitor is still showing heavy CPU usage). I find that clicking and slightly resizing the display window shows the photo again until I let go of the mouse button, at which point it goes black again. Sometimes instead of black I have a solid grey fill instead.
Once the black image effect has started I also find that the handles when resizing an image or text area in the photo book editor disappear.
I also find though that the loupe tool never seems affected so I often end up using that for a while rather than having to restart Aperture again!

  • Still images rendering black

I have been trying to import a still image with ken burns effect. It is coming into the program and then rendering and going black with no photo. I have tried Jpeg, Tiff what can I do????

*Not knowing the origin to Your problem - General approach when in trouble is as follows.*
    • Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk if it is less than 10Gb should rather have 25Gb
    • Delete iMovie pref file - or rather start a new user/account - log into this and re-try
    iMovie pref file resides.
    Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/"Your account"/Library/Preferences
    and is named. *com.apple.iMovie.plist *
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this file out to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
    • Hard disk is untidy. Repair Permissions, Repair Hard disk (Apple Disc Util tool)
    • Garageband-fix. Start it, Play a note and Close it. Re-try (Corrects an audio problem that hinders iMovie)
    • Screen must be set to Million-colors
    • Third party plug-ins that doesn't work OK (not relevant for iMovie’08 or 09)
    iMovie updated ?
    QuickTime updated ?
    Mac OS version ?
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 5.0.2, up to Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK
    • Program miss-match. iMovie 6.0.3 or 6.0.4, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
    • Program miss-match. iMovie’08 v. 7.0.1, Mac OS X.4.11 AND QuickTime 7.4.1 - is OK (might work under Leopard)
From LKN 1935. (in this case = iMovie HD (5), I tried it all, but nothing worked.
Your answer (above) has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that
there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled
iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos)
to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before.

I run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac.

  • Image goes black after levels adjustment

I've recently been using the Aperture Trial and have ran into a problem where the image in the Viewer will go black after I make a levels adjustment to the image.
It will show the image when I go into full-screen, but it won't show it in the Viewer window.
Has anyone else had an issue with this?
    JT

I have a cautionary report about this bug - I really did not see it much myself, but after the last OS update I have seen images go black two times when editing on a Macbook Pro.
Going full screen and back did not fix the problem - the few times I had it happen in the past, I could simply apply some adjustment (like exposure) and remove the adjustment and the image would also be fine. In this case however I had to restart Aperture to be able to see the image again.
I'll also file a bug report.

  • Still images appear black in final DVD

I am making a 12 minute film on a Dell dimension 2400 using elements 2 (which I have done several times before without problems).
Project includes video and still photos.
Some of the photos appear black in the timeline and some appear black on the DVD.
What might be causing this? Thanks

  • FLV Video Goes Black

    Hello,
I have a FLV video playing through the Media Display
componet, however, when the video is finished playing, the image
goes black. I've tried reseting the video, adding an extra frame at
the end of the FLV video, moving the componet off the stage when
finished...nothing seems to work. How can I get rid of this black
    box?
    Thanks,
    -Dan

    Nickels55,
Thank you so much for weighing in on this. I really
    appreciate it.
I've put the.swf on the web along with a quicktime version to
show how the players handle the video differently. I'm hoping to
emulate the quicktime way of doing things. Basically, the quicktime
player stops the video at the end and leaves the playhead there -
which is nice if you want the final frame to integrate seemlesly
with the site. The flash player is moving the playhead back to the
beginning of the video. That's what I hope to stop. I'd like to see
the playhead stay on the last frame.
You can see the two videos
    HERE. But I warn
you, it's obnoxious having two of the same video on one page, so
    turn the speakers down. Yuck.
Thanks so much for your willingness to look into this!!!!!!!!
    Jake

  • I get just a few seconds of video on my HDTV before it goes black.

I have a Mac Mini G4 1.25 with a DVI output. I recently bought a Belkin DVI-HDMI cable, which I used to connect it to a Panasonic 42" plasma TV. It worked fine for about 5 minutes (with a little overscan, but hey) and then the image started to sort of ripple and ended up going black. When I reboot, I can see the booting process in the TV, but as soon as it's going to show the desktop the image goes black. It works fine with an LCD monitor using the VGA converter.
Any ideas? At first I thought it was the cable, but I find it odd that it consistently works for 1-2 minutes.
    Thanks for any help.
    Antonio.

Yes, this was a common topic on these forums back with the G4 minis were current. The problem has to do with an obscure detail in the mini's spec relating to digital video that says the attached display must be of the coherent TMDS type in order for DVI to work above certain pixel clock frequencies. You can read it here in the following link. Search that page for the word "coherent".
    http://support.apple.com/kb/sp65
Probably your attached TV has a non-coherent receiver in it and the pixel clock is above 135 MHz for the timing being applied. The solution that worked in most cases was to use SwitchResX and lower the pixel clock to 135 MHz or less. That generally did the trick.

  • Photo goes black when editing it

    Hi,
I acknowledge this is a fairly common matter, but let me try to share my on experience.
For the past few days, I have been importing photos in my iPhoto library either from .jpg docs or brand new ones from my digital camera.
Each time I try to edit one of those, the image goes black. Surprisingly, if I try to crop a picture, the image comes back to view !?
    I have unsuccessfully tried to:
    - repair iPhoto library permissions
    - reconstruct library
using the Cmd+alt keys when lauching iPhoto.
I have NEVER experienced such a painful behaviour in the past, as I have to go back and forth between the editing and normal modes to see the results of my editing.
Any educated advice would be appreciated.
    Mac mini Core 2 Duo - 2 Go RAM - OS X 10.7.5 - iPhoto 9.4.1

The fact that you can edit those photos and get them to display correctly via a new, modified file indicates that the originals are damaged somehow.
Select one of the thumbnails and use the File ➙ Reveal in Finder ➙ Original menu option to take you to the original file located inside the library.  Copy the file to the desktop and try the following:
1 - download Convert to JPG and Embed sRGB profile from Toad's Cellar and unzip it.
2 - drag the file from the desktop onto the application.
3 - import the converted files into iPhoto and see if it appears as it should.
If the above works you could run it on each file in the library.  Unfortunately you would have to open each subfolder in the Masters folder and drag the files onto the application.  That will be a lot of manual work.

  • The screen on my MacBook goes black often. I can still see a faint image of what's on the screen, and can only get it to illuminate by moving it back and forth. What could the issue be? How can it be fixed?

The startup disk may need repairing ...
Launch Disk Utility located in HD > Applications > Utilities
Select the startup disk on the left then select the First Aid tab.
Click:  Verify Disk  (not Verify Disk Permissions)
If the disk needs repairing, restart your Mac while holding down the Command + R keys. From there you can access the built in utilities in OS X Recovery to repair the startup disk.

Could be the graphics card, run the Apple Hardware Test
If the hardware test doesn't reveal any problems, use Lion Recovery.

  • Still images turn to black backgrounds in the exported movie

I am still using Premiere 2.0. I produced a ca. 25 min project with still images at the beginning and at the end and short videoclips in between. Still images are only ca. 40-50 kB large. When working on it I occasionally got a few problems (e.g. an audio transition across two clips was making Premiere hanging up) but I could easily get around them and successfully preview the project and export it to a folder and directly to a DVD. However, when viewing the movie on TV I found out that almost all (BUT NOT ALL!) the still images had turned into black backgrounds. I have exported the movie as MPEG, more still images were fine but not all of them. I have tried to drastically reduce the number of still images (max 5) but nome of them were fine. I do not have any error message and this problem is driving me crazy! Does anyone have a brilliant idea?
Last year I bought the new version of Premiere (3.0 I believe, surely not 7.0) but I stopped using it after one week because there was no way to successfully export the project I was working on. I made several videos, always got problems but so far I always found a solution on Premiere forum. Hope this time too!
    Many thanks for the attention

Try sizing your photos to 1000x750 pixels in size.
Also, right-click on each photo on the timeline and select Field Options and check the Flicker Removal box.
These will give you the best quality.
I am also concerned, however, that you are having technical problems and, especially, that you can not use a newer version of the program.
I'd recommend you install the latest version of Quicktime and the newest RealTek drivers, as we recommend in our FAQ.

Also, using my recommended computer maintenance will remove temp files on your computer and make it run like new.

  • Screen goes black audio still works

I've noticed for the last couple of days when I am watching tv (YES network), the screen suddenly goes black, the audio still works.  If I flip the chanell selector on the remote up or down a few chanells it comes back.  This is happening on both of my cable boxes.  Any suggestions?

I am sorry to hear about the issues you are having with your TV service. Is this happening on any other channel other than the YES Network? Are you still having the trouble? We would like to see if we can reproduce this. How often does it go to black like that? Is it during a certain time of the day? Thank you for your time in answering our questions so we can look into this further.

  • HT1551 I'm able to watch netflix's for about 15 minutes then the video goes black but I still have audio.

I just set up my Apple TV. I'm able to watch netflix's for about 15 minutes then the video goes black but I still have audio.

Is it always at the 15 minute mark?
To make sure it's not a connectivity issue
What is your connection via speedtest.net?
