Still need credit card info to download FREE apps in App Store

Why has this issue not yet been addressed by Apple? How is it even sensible that people must provide credit card information just to download FREE apps in the App Store? The App Store was launched months ago! This is very unusual of Apple and their policy of making things simple for customers.

That is Apple's policy.
You can setup an Apple ID without a credit card.

As a security precaution, Apple verifies your billing credentials with every transaction whether paid or free apps or using the balance of a redeemed code.

  • Why do I need to supply credit card info for a free app?

I've owned a 4s for 1 1/2 years and downloaded many free apps.  Now, in the last week, I'm asked for my credit card information to download a free app?  What gives?

In the world of digital financial transactions, the term "free" is a bit of a misnomer.  Everything has a purchase price.  The price in this case is 0.00.  In order to pay the price for the item, you must enter valid payment information.

  • No credit card--can't download free apps.

I printed out the instructions listed in the link (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534) because I am having the same problem not being able to download free apps. When I get to the step to select "none" for credit card, this selection is not there and won't let me go past without a cc. My daughter had here ipod first and she did not have put any cc info in and has no problems. How can I get past this?

Are you sure you're starting the account creation by clicking on the "get" button for a free application? I signed out of my account in the iTunes store, went to the App store and chose a free app. In the resulting sign-in prompt I clicked on create account and filled in the information, using an email address I've never before used with iTunes. When I got to the "provide a payment" screen I was able to choose None. Note that this won't necessarily work if you don't start the process by going to a free app and clicking Get.
If you're still having trouble, try making sure that your computer is running at least iTunes 8.0.2. Click your Help menu and choose About iTunes; the exact version you are running is in the very first line that scrolls up.

  • Why am being asked for credit card info for a free app of the day?

IIf an app of the day is free why am I being asked to update my credit card info?

If you have a credit card on your account then it has to valid and its details correct.
If this is the first time that you've tried to use the account in the store then unless the instructions on this page are followed when creating an account : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534
then credit card details will need to be entered before the account can be used to download any item from the store.
If you are being prompted to review your account then you could see if this post by mountaingoatgirl lets you do so without needing to enter credit card details : https://discussions.apple.com/message/24303054#24303054

  • ITunes is asking for credit card details to download free apps

I've never had an apple product before so im new to this, but i now have an iPhone 3GS on IOS 4.1. I can't update the iPhone as i have it unlocked and it will remove the patch. I know that to download apps you need to put in card details, but i dont own a credit card. Apparently, it's supposed to give me an option not to select any card, which would allow me to download free apps but that option isnt there. I can't download any apps, not even free ones.

There are instructions on this page on how to create a new account (the instructions won't work with existing accounts) : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534 e.g. select a free app in the store and click 'create Apple id' when 'buying' it

Why I need credit card. To download any item

Because Apple needs the information required in the event you purchase an item. Without the card there would be nothing to charge the purchase to.

Do I have to have a credit card to down load free apps?

You must have a method of payment on your iTunes store account to download free apps. The method of payment is used to verify your identity and age. It does not have to be a credit card; see: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534
