Still no Firewire

If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. The only thing I can think of is to reinstall the OS.
Is there any other means of resetting the Firewire - shutting down/unplugging had no effect. Could find no Prefs to toss - could a Firewire extension be corrupted?
Are the FW 400 and 800 ports on the same board? The 400 is still working. Is it possible the CF reader fried my 800 port when I plugged it in? Is there any other way to test the port other than buying another 800 component? Would resetting the PMU help/hurt/or make no difference.
Any thoughts or suggestions...thanks a bunch.

1. Shut-down your Mac, and unplug the power cord
2. Turn the power off on your external FireWire devices
3. Unplug the FireWire devices from the Mac
4. Wait for 5 min.
5. Plug the power cord to your Mac only
6. For PPC Macs: Restart the Mac while holding the Option-Apple-O-F, and keep holding until you get the ">" prompt, then release the keys
7. At the ">" prompt type:
reset-nvram and hit the Return key
set-defaults and hit the Return key
reset-all and hit the Return key
the last command will restart your mac
8. Shut down your Mac
9. Connect all your FireWire devices to the Mac and turn them on
10. Restart your Mac.
All your FireWire devices should reapear, if not repeat the procedure
How to avoid the issue :
The only really proven way to avoid burning up a FireWire port is to connect all devices and to turn them on PRIOR turning on the Mac. Likely, one must unplug them and turn them off AFTER the Mac has been turned off. If you need to connect another device, then you're on for a shutdown of your machine...
It's a tad annoying but it guarantees that the FW ports won't be damaged.
Be careful when using self powered devices such as webcams, iPods, hard drives or hubs, as they can destroy the port pretty easily. Another thing is to avoid daisy-chaining hard drives.
When the FW port doesn't respond anymore :
In this case, peripherals won't be mounted upon plugging, and won't be displayed in Apple's System Profiler. The self powered devices will still be fed by the port, but won't respond either.
It happens that the PHY just hangs after a surge or a random problem. Once hung, the port will not respond any longer, it is possible to reset the component by going through the following steps :
1° boot the PPC mac in Open Firmware by holding [ Apple key - Option - O - F ] after the startup chime.
2° you'll get to a command prompt. the keyboard mapping will be QWERTY, so pay attention when you type the following :
RESET-NVRAM (enter)
RESET-ALL (enter)
3° Now the mac should restart itself and the port should function properly again.
If it still doesn't work, then it means that the PHY is damaged.

From Kappy post:
922 is only used in dual drive cases to provide a "build-in firmware RAID support"
912 or 912+ is FW800, the "+" means USB2
911 is FW400
924 adds eSATA support along with FW400/800
MacSales, OWC Tech Support library is where I would go first, as they do tend to have or links to, firmware updates for Oxford.
From Wiebetech:
I just upgraded my Mac OS, and now I'm having trouble with my FireWire device. What can I do?
A: With nearly every OS update Apple releases, some external drives are not recognized after the update. The typical symptom is that the device will not mount but the volume is visible and grayed out in Disk Utility. This means that the device is working properly, but the OS does not recognize the volume as mountable. Sometimes the drive does not show up at all.
The first thing to do is to see if repairing Permissions with Apple's Disk Utility First Aid feature solves the problem. If not, try repairing the disk with First Aid. Another possible solution is to zap the PRAM. This is done with a keyboard command while rebooting. Restart your computer and hold down the Command, Option, P and R keys. Consult the Apple web site for details.
If this does not work, then try pushing the PMMU reset button on the logic board. Consult the Apple web site for locations of the button for your Mac. If the drive still does not show up, shut down, disconnect all peripheral devices, and boot from the Mac OS Installation CD. The later the OS version, the better. Do not reinstall the OS, but when the Installer is loaded up and ready to begin, go to the File menu and use the Disk Utility program. Connect the drive that is having problems, then start the Disk Utility application. If you see the external drive and it is not grayed out, you know the drive is okay. Run Disk First Aid on it anyway. Then run it on your internal boot drive while you are at it. When done, unmount the external drive and UNPLUG it! Then restart the Mac.
When the Mac has restarted and is running on the internal boot drive, reconnect the external drive.

  • ITunes 10.6 + Firewire iPod

I've been scouring the Apple Support Website for inforrmation about my problem but haven't found an answer yet.
My situation is that I'm running a Powermac G5 (final model) with OSX 10.5.8 installed, which I just updated with the new version of iTunes (10.6). I have been running iTunes since setting up this machine with a (don't laugh) 3rd Generation iPod (40 GB), and more recently a 2nd Generation iPod shuffle. Last Fall I added an iPhone 4S to the mix. iTunes has been handling all three devices reasonably well, but I will admit that there has been a bit more instability since adding the iPhone.
Beginning Saturday night, the firewire iPod is no longer recognized by iTunes, which becomes unresponsive (spinning beach ball) and stays that way until I force it to quit. The iPod never as much as shows up in the device list. When I disconnect the 3G and restart iTunes, it still recognizes the iPhone and Shuffle just fine. Add the 3G iPod back into the mix, and boom, spinning beach ball.
At first, of course, I just assumed that my antique iPod had simply died, but I had an older Mac sitting around so I connected the 3G iPod to see what would happen. The older machine is an iMac G4, running OSX 10.4.11 and iTunes 7.3. iTunes launches and my 3G iPod shows up in the devices list. All my music is there and plays, device information checks ok. I did run Disk Utility, and it found and successfully repaired a directory error, so I thought that might be the culprit so I reconnected it to my G5, but again got the dreaded spinning beach ball. I did also try the iPod troubleshooting procedures, up to but not including restore. Since the iPod appears to be ok in an earlier version of iTunes, I decided to focus on iTunes.
I reinstalled iTunes and removed the Apple Mobile Device Service files, as instructed at http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1747, but that did not rectify the situation. I couldn't find anything that definitievly states that firewire support was removed from iTunes in this lated version, but neither could I find anything specifically stating that it still supports firewire iPods.
    Any ideas or suggestions?

Wish I had the link but I read last December that new versions of iTunes would no longer support FireWire iPods.
Which would explain your iPod working on an "older" machine than your venerable G5.
Not long ago the friend to whom I had given an old Windows Sony laptop made the mistake of accepting an iTunes update from 9 to 10.  9 ran fine on the old laptop with its 1ghz processor and 1 GB of ram.  10 absolutely, positively did not.
I was able to find her a retrograde install of iTunes for Windows, which put her back in "business."
Don't know if there's any way to do the same on Mac.  There are sites that offer complete old versions of some software.  Worth a try to find one.  You may have to do a wipe and install from your Leopard discs since Apple isn't much on about letting users retrograde.  Good luck!

  • External drive enclosure, USB 2 mounts, firewire invisible!

I have a venus ds3 external enclosure with a 300GB 7200rpm WD hard drive inside it. The enclosure works fine with windows and usb2, and it is also detected and mounted on usb2 on my mini (1.25ghz ppc mini). However, nothing happens when I try to use the firewire connection on the mini. In system profiler, I see:
    FireWire Device Tree
    FireWire Bus
    Unknown Device
It is an oxford fw911 chipset, and I did run the updater to FW911V4_00_0000Release.bin, but still no firewire action. The updater saw the enclosure via firewire on my mac, but os x will not see the drive itself.
Am I doomed to using usb2? Would it still be possible to boot from this drive on usb2 instead of firewire?
mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   upgraded to 512MB ram

    problem is
you cannot use 300 gigs as fire wire on any mac mini
the max you can use is only 200 gigs before mac os x
    no longer recongnizes the drive
so you need a 200 gig hard drive sorry
Is there some documentation that you could cite on the 200gb barrier?
I'm also interested if it's a ppc-mini only problem or if it affects other systems as well.
I have a 250gig firewire drive on my wife's intel mac mini
and it works fine. Even if it only regognized on 200gig and
I didn't notice, it mounted and worked.
I now have it partitioned into 2 samller volumes. So, if it's
a problem on the PPC mac, then he should be able to
partition the drive and make it work.
I just now tried partitioning it again via usb, and made two 137gb partitions (or whatever odd number it came out to be), and it was still not recognized when I switched over to firewire.
If it turns out that john was right, and nothing over 200gb will work, can I still get some use out of the drive? Can I install applications on it or move the swap files over to it?

  • No Firewire on Late 2009 MacBook

It's official. Apple isn't listening. No Firewire on Late 2009 MacBook.
Hoping to see FW800, got nothing instead.
No target disk mode or DV? No sale.

After the uproar last time, I don't see the point. They aren't listening or don't care. Apple wants users to compromise basic, critical functionality when they buy a $999 MacBook.
Agreed! I can see dropping Firewire off a $449 laptop, but the MacBook?
Oh wait... you CAN still get Firewire on a $449 laptop:

  • How  to start in TDM or transfer data from an older Mac without FireWire??

For the MacBooks that don't have FireWire, how do you transfer data from another Mac since you can't start in Target Disk Mode?
Similarly, with a FireWire Mac, if I need to do some disk repair, I can start in TDM and run Disk Utility's Repair Disk or rebuild the directory with Disk Warrior. What do you do with these non-FireWire Macs?
(What is Apple thinking by removing FireWire???)
    Chris

For the MacBooks that don't have FireWire, how do you transfer data from another Mac since you can't start in Target Disk Mode?
    I would still use Firewire.
The hard drive is fairly easy to remove on the Macbook. I would remove it and install it in an external Firewire enclosure temporarily to transfer your files quickly and reliably, then put the drive back in the Macbook.
You 'can' use USB or Ethernet, but it's not as reliable as Firewire.
Firewire is "isochronous", basically meaning that you can pump "clocked" data though it in real time. USB works more like TCPIP, with the data chopped up into packets and later reassembled. (Thus, at a minimum, you have latency, that is, the wait for the data to be "put back together".) Second, the Firewire protocol allows more direct address to memory (including mass storage) with minimal intervention of the CPU.
Putting the drive in a external Firewire enclosure is a bit more work, but nothing will interfere with it. No collisions, no glitches. Firewire is rock-solid.

  • Non training for tech support folks in store or on line for no firewire

Has anybody else found that the Apple support people themselves have no idea what to do without the firewire?
I went through four different people and four different opinions at the store about how I could migrate from my old iBook G4 without firewire with some telling me wireless or ethernet was impossible.
WIth no thanks to the apple people or support documents on their site, I got a wired ethernet network created between my two computers using a ethernet crossover wire. But then I couldn't get migration assistant to work because my old computer runs 10.3.9. I got on line with a woman who did not listen (I said off the bat there was no firewire -- though she should have known without my telling her from knowing it was a new macbook) and that I had set up the ethernet connection. I followed hersteps for 10 minutes before she said, "oh wait, you don't have a firewire cable" and put be back on hold. After she came back again, and finally transferred me over to a "specialist", all he could tell me was that I had to do everything manually and that it was my fault because my computer was too old and because I had chosen to buy the MacBook and not the MacBook pro.
I have been with Apple since the IIe. I got to play once on the proto type for the first little Mac. But now I am very very angry with a company that I think no longer cares for its customers. To not provide needed documentation (I found documents on line that spoke of 10.3 and migration assistant and no where in them did I find useful information, like this just isn't possible) and not to provide training so that your so-called support people have clue one is outrageous.

Yes, the omission of a FireWire port on the new MacBooks is definitely going to be an issue with many of us loyal Apple products users and owners, especially the ones holding the bag with FireWire HDs, Audio Interfaces, high end video, etc. Even if FireWire is going to be omitted because of future upgrades to faster USB and other port based systems, now is not the time to stop installing FireWire ports, especially without a technical alert for customers.
Most lower end PC laptops, Dell, etc. have FireWire ports available on those systems and probably will continue to offer them until new technologies take hold.
I was really excited about the new, more powerful Aluminum MacBooks and was looking into an upgrade from my older white MacBook 2.2 MHz, until I read the specs about no FireWire port and from reviews in MacWorld and various posts I have read about other customers concerns about this same issue.
Actually I use the FireWire port everyday, more than USB, like 8-12 hours to hook up my Tascam FireOne FireWire audio interface. The better audio interfaces are mostly FireWire supported presently anyway.
Companies are still manufacturing FireWire peripherals and some music software requires FireWire audio interfaces for best performance and lessen latency problems. Although some USB audio interfaces are better than others, Apogee and other fine audio interfaces are still designed to be connected via FireWire.
My little MacBook runs GB and other music software just fine, and I don't see a need to invest in USB products, nor buy the more expensive MBP just because it still has the FireWire 800 port. Unless there are USB/FireWire based adapters made available that work flawlessly, workarounds to connect Firewire peripherals to the new MacBooks, many of us that are buying FireWire hardware are being left out in the loop. We already have made substantial investments in FireWire based hardware and shouldn't have to purchase other USB peripherals because the new MacBooks don't have the ports available anymore.
I have been supported and buying Apple products since 1992, so I guess that makes me a loyal Apple customer. I feel I have to address the FireWire issue, because this issue alone puts a real roadblock in upgrading to the new MacBooks. Hopefully Apple will address these concerns, which seem to be many from their customers. Hopefully a solution will be offered, such as the ports being installed in the next generation of MacBooks. Then I can justify an upgrade.

  • No Firewire on newer DV7 models?

I'm looking to get a new laptop, and I'm especially looking at HP laptops. Due to requiring a large screen I'm looking at the DV7 series. From what I've seen these come in two styles - the slightly older black ones with the swirl patterns and the newer, brushed aluminium models. I'm leaning towards one of the aluminium ones (partly because I like the idea of having switchable graphics and, as far as I can tell, only the aluminium ones have this) - however, none of them seem to have a firewire port. This is an essential feature for me, because I'll need to use the laptop to capture footage from my video camera, or even record directly to the hard drive, and would like to be able to use it to set up the camera using software such as Adobe OnLocation.
So do none of these laptops have firewire? Any reason why not? I was looking for alternative solutions, such as an eSATA-Firewire adapter, but I'm not sure if that would be a viable option because the video software may not detect the camera through that. What are my options (if any)?

Yeah, I just spoke to a retailer and they said that newer laptops do not have firewire in favour of eSATA and USB 3.0. Great for removable drives, bad for video cameras (at least for professional ones - USB might be useful for accessing memory cards on cameras, but when it comes to using a computer in the studio, with software such as Adobe OnLocation, even the latest video cameras still have firewire for that).
Unfortunately it seems that the aluminium DV7s don't have an expresscard slot either, so I'm currently looking for USB-Firewire or eSATA-Firewire adapters instead. Or I might just go with a different model of laptop.

  • IMovie and Firewire Free MacBook

I bought a MacBook. I want to edit movies. Do I have to go out and buy another camera because my MacBook doesn't have a firewire port and Mac Help says Use a Firewire Port? My cameras are all tape-based and work just fine thank you.
Or should I buy another video editing software and jettison iMovie?
    Thanks

Or should I buy another video editing software and jettison iMovie?
The problem is not iMovie, it is the lack of Firewire.
Other software will still want Firewire.
You can buy a USB camcorder, but USB camcorders use formats that use high compression to store the video files thereby lowering quality. This may be good enough to give you "decent footage" if so, then you won't have a problem using a USB camcorder. However I have never been happy with the quality that a USB camcorder provides (they always look grainy to me).
A miniDV tape cam will give you lossless quality video and is best for any editing purposes (iMovie, Final Cut etc.). So without Firewire make sure you get a chance to try out any USB camcorder before you buy.
Many import on another Mac, then copy the movie to the aluminum Macbook for editing.
iMovie 06 and iDVD 08 is a terrific combination.
MANY equipment manufacturers are coming out with NEW Firewire equipment next year.

  • No Firewire after update

I've just updated my 40gb iPod photo using the 23-03-05 update from my iMac G5, via Firewire.
Following this the "Do not disconnect" sign was displayed on my iPod for about 10 minutes.
Checked my iPod guide, said it was ok to remove if iTunes was not transferring data, which it wasn't.
Also checked that the installer had quit and iSync wasn't open either.
    All seemed ok.
Re-opened iTunes and my iPod was not visible, not mounted on desktop and no do not disconnect symbol.
iPod was still charging through the Firewire cable though.
Read a few other posts here, and info on the Apple site. Saw something mentioned about people not being able to connect via USB2 being able to connect by Firewire. Same problem but the other way around -so thought I'd have a go at connecting via USB2.
    This worked fine!
I restored my iPod via the CD that came with it, still no Firewire.
Re-updated to the latest firmware, still no Firewire.
Seeing all the problems people here are having with USB2, I want to get back to using Firewire asap!!
    Can anyone help!

About a week ago, I ordered a brand-new 40GB iPod Photo from Amazon.com. When it arrived a few days ago, I connected it to my 1.8GHz dual-G5 running OS 10.3.9 with all latest patches installed
    - I connected the iPod dock to the G5 with the supplied FireWire cable.
(Later, I confirmed that it made no difference even with the USB cable.)
    - I put the iPod Photo in the dock.
    - iTunes 4.7.1 launched automatically.
    - Asked by iTunes, I installed the latest iPod update: iPodUpdater2005-03-23
    - After the update, 'Do not disconnect' on the iPod Photo never went away.
    - So, I ejected the iPod in the Finder and quit iTunes.
    - As I re-inserted the iPod Photo in the dock, iTunes tried to launch but quit prematurely.
    - The iPod did mount on the Desktop.
    - The launch/quit issue with iTunes was 100% reproducible.
This meant that I had no access to the iPod via iTunes. I tried all standard measures I could think of under circumstances such as this, but the launch/quit issue remained. So, I finally resorted to reinstalling the iPod software from the CD that came with my iPod Photo:
    - The CD installed the iPod Updater Version 1.1 (circa 2004-10-20).
    - Since a newer update (2005-03-23) is already installed, the Update button was dimmed.
    - So, I clicked on Restore.
    - Upon restarting iTunes 4.7.1, I chose NO for updating the iPod software to 2005-03-23.
    - All functionality of my iPod Photo and its interaction with iTunes 4.7.1 were restored.
To further experiment with all this, I re-applied iPodUpdater2005-03-23 and the whole launch/quit & 'Do not disconnect' death trap returned. As I did a reinstall from the CD for the 2nd time, all returned normal again.
Once I was in the death trap, the USB connection for the iPod Photo did not change the situation.
So, if someone lands in the same situation as I was in, I would recommend to live with the 2004-10-20 update for the iPod with OS 10.3.9. Of course, Tiger will bring another chapter to this.

  • No Firewire bus?

I have an iMac G5 that I upgraded to a larger HDD, and used Migration assistant to move some applications. I shut down the old and new Imacs and the next day I started them both back up to transfer more applications. Now both show no firewire bus info in system profiler, and obviously will not connect through migration assistant. I have since powered both down, removed the power cords for 2 minutes, changed the button batteries, and reset the SMU's. Still no firewire bus info. I also downloaded and installed the 10.4.11 combo updater on the old iMac, also to no avail.
Any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance!
    Dave G.

    Try an Open Firmware reset:
After the startup tone, hold down <command><option><o><f> until the text screen is visible. When text can be entered, type the following commands, followed by the <return> key (there are no space characters in each command):
    reset-nvram
    set-defaults
reset-all (the Mac will boot up after this command is entered)

  • Firewire Devices

oddly enough, some folks still think firewire is plug and play. not so, even sony says so (for some odd reason i've been trolling the sony broadcast and industrial site today and drooling over a bvm and i found this warning). most of ya'll know this but it's always good to reiterate and remind:
Firewire Devices ARE NOT Plug and Play!
even sony says so! http://bssc.sel.sony.com/BroadcastandBusiness/markets/10018/docs/FirewireNoticeG enericVersion6212006.pdf

I think that "hot swappable" refers to the fact that you can pull the plug while the COMPUTER is on, not the drive. Before you had to shut everything down, then disconnect the drive, then power on. Hot means that the computer can be hot, not the drive.
Or did that link say that the computer shouldn't be hot either? I am to lazy to click on the link and read.
But yes, the hot-swappable misperception is very wide indeed.

  • How to reinstall Mountain Lion while disabling firewire extention

I am reinstalling Mountain Lion but get stuck at the reboot stage, because the installation procedure re-enables my fried FireWire port, which I had previously disabled by removing all FireWire-related extensions.  When FireWire is enabled (i.e. there are FireWire extensions in /System/Library/Extensions), my computer never starts up because it is busy printing a "handleunrecoverableerrorint" message about FireWire.
How can I reinstall Mountain Lion while avoiding the re-installation of FireWire extensions?  I already have a bootable ML USB drive from which I am running ML Install.
My AppleCare is long over, but I've managed to squeeze a few extra years out of my 2008 MBP by removing FireWire kexts.
Here's what I've tried so far:
The problem seemed to be that /OS X Install Data/BaseSystem.dmg contains FireWire extensions, which I believe is the system that is loaded during installation.
I have already tried rolling my own identical BaseSystem.dmg minus its FireWire extensions (properly chmodded), but somehow I still get FireWire error messages during startup.  /OS X Install Data/kernelcache might be the culprit, but I don't know how to rebuild it.
I can't think of anything else to do... any ideas?

Open the Mac App Store, click Purchases, select ML, then re-download and install. However if your machine has the abillity to run Mavericks I'd just upgrade to that and bypass ML.

  • No firewire no video?

Hi, I bought a new macbook, and I tried to connect my sony camcorder mod. DCR-PC106E with the USB cable, but imovie not see, I tried to look for usb drivers, but do not exist, how can I solve this problem?

You will need Firewire to import from a miniDV camera. You can either find another Mac and import your events there. Then you can move them to an external drive (USB), which you can then attach to your computer.
Or you can go out and buy an AVCHD or MPEG2 Hi definition camcorder, which works with USB. Here is a list.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1014
If you are still in the two week window, you can return your MacBook and exchange it for a MacBook Pro or iMac, which still have FireWire. Also, the White low-end MacBook may have Firewire, but double check me on that.
There are probably other options, but I can't think of them right now.

  • Cloning with no FireWire

To my surprise, my new white MacBooks have no FireWire ports. This is a school setting, so how do I clone systems using Carbon Copy Cloner? Does it not require FireWire Target Disk Mode to work?

    I would still use Firewire.
The hard drive is fairly easy to remove on the Macbook. I would remove it and install it in an external Firewire enclosure temporarily to transfer your files quickly and reliably, then put the drive back in the Macbook.
You 'can' use Ethernet or USB, but it's not as reliable as Firewire.
Putting the drive in a external Firewire enclosure is a bit more work, but nothing will interfere with it. No collisions, no glitches. Firewire is rock-solid.

  • FireWire 400 died, got FW 800 back

Yes both Firewire ports were gone after a Migration try to the 17"er. The 15"er did not come up (in Target Disk Mode, altho it was in that mode) on the 17"er, did not find it on Desktop, in Finder, in Disk Utility or in System Profiler. Shut both down before unplugging.
Went to try my external drive (not mounting either). In the Profiler under FireWire it said "No Information Found". At this point I had neither FW port (400 or 800).
First tried what Apple says; unplug, remove battery, leave for 5 min... and restart. Nothing. Left it off again for an hour... in Profiler I now had "Firewire Bus, Speed up to 800MB". Figured since I did not have to reset the Date and Time, after the hour off, that maybe the internal battery was holding the 400 out. So I removed all power overnight. In the morning, had to reset Date and Time, but still no FireWire 400. Have FW 800 still.
Next did a Hardware Test from the CD. Shows all as "Passed", Logic Board included. I have tried 3 different cables and still nothing. Even the drive with the FW 800 plug works fine, and if I use the 'conversion' plug (FW 400 to FW 800) both work on the FW 800 port, but not the FW 400. And both work on USB. One external drive is USB/FW400 the other is USB/FW800.
It seems not to be the external drives, nor the FW 800 (any more), only the FW 400.
Is there something else I can try to see if the FW 400 can be revived?

    Thanks BGreg,
Well the PMU did not do it.
After inspecting the FW 400 port plug-in... BOY IS IT LOOSE! It moves every which way, north, south, east and west, and every other direction... but not stable. The FW 800 is far more stable (firm).
If it is disconnected from the Logic Board, does it have a connector, or is it soldered? The answer will determine what I do with it. (And yes, I have used that FW 400 port a very lot... maybe should of left the external just plugged in. But that did not fit with the mobility of this unit.)
PS: the 15"er is a 1.5/1.67 model (PowerPC 5,6) Middle of '05; came with 10.3.7
