Still No Preferences

GarageBand has no preferences. I've tried deleting the .plist files and anything else that says GarageBand in the preferences folder, but it still doesn't work. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mary.

Some additional info on this problem:
1) We've updated permissions on the boot disk, and replaced the garage band .plist file, but preferences still doesn't appear in GB.
2) The following error message is appearing in the log file:
2006-03-28 20:20:53.252 GarageBand[2207] * Assertion failure in -[NSMenu itemAtIndex:], Menus.subproj/NSMenu.m:713
2006-03-28 20:20:53.355 GarageBand[2207] GarageBand: Invalid parameter not satisfying: (index >= 0) && (index < (_itemArray ? CFArrayGetCount((CFArrayRef)_itemArray) : 0))
So.... any clues as to why the program isn't resolving the preferences menu item?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mary.<br>

  • Still No Preferences Window in 1.1

Ok, so I had and read about the problem with the 1.01 update, the preference window won't open, wether you choose it from the menu or shortcut. So I went back to version 1.0. When I heard about 1.1 I eagerly awaited hoping this would be resolved. After the 1.1 update I still can't open my preferences window. And when I quit Aperture, the application quits, but I get that window that says "The application Aperture has quit unexpectedly". Does anyone know whats up with the updates and the preferences window? I'm real close to swithing back to iPhoto.

    Hi,
Have you tried doing a clean install? Here are some things to try:
    Cleaning Aperture off system:
Here are the things to delete manually:
    1. Main Hard Drive>Library>Application Support>ProApps>Aperture System ID - (this will delete your serial number).
    2. User's drive (Home)>Pictures>Aperture Library - (NOTE: Only delete if you want to start with a clean Library. You can always rename it or copy somewhere to launch a new library)
    3. User's drive (Home)>Library>Application Support>Aperture - (Delete entire folder. This will get rid of your presets and keywords)
    4. User's drive (Home)>Library>Caches>Aperture - (Delete entire folder)
    5. User's drive (Home)>Library>Preferences>com.apple.Aperture.plist - (This is your general Preferences. I'd try this one first)

  • Final Cut X is ignoring import still length preferences.

I am trying to import a series of jpegs into an event.  I have gone into the preferences pane and changed the default still length of 4 seconds to 1 second, 15 frames, etc.  Final Cut is ignoring my changes, therfore I can't get the desired result.  Is this a bug?  Please help.

Isn't a bug, but I like to think of it as such. The duration of selection only works when you click on the icon of one clip. Select any more and the selection changes to 10 seconds. How is this useful? I've Googled and loads of people have the same assumption.
Of course, you can change the duration of all the images once they're in the timeline, so no big deal.

  • Missing preferences, tool bars, menu items after receiving CS3 file while I have CS2

    I have Indesign CS2. I rec'd a CS3 file not knowing it was CS3. A message appeared as follows:
Cannot Open. Please upgrade your plugins to the latest versions, or upgrade to the latest edition of Indesign.
I went into HELP, Configure plugins. Chose "all" and "required" plugins. I then clicked ok and it said "All plugins available when you restart application" and it still wouldn't open. Then I was sent an exchange version of the same file and it still wouldn't open. I received this message:
Cannot open. InDesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing or the file may be open in another application.
After this I wasn't able to get my CS2 screen back the way it was before. There's no introduction when I open the program, my tool bars aren't present, and the menu items aren't as extensive as they were before.
It was then suggested I reinstall Cs2. I logged in under the administrator. CS2 was different than the way I had it before but the tool bars were present. I then logged in under my name and there are still problems;no tool bars, missing menu items, no intro, etc.
    I then tried rebuilding my preferences using these instructions;
The fastest way to do this for InDesign CS2 (and any CS2 program) is to quit the program, then hold down Command-Option-Shift-Control immediately after starting it up again, and keep those keys held down. (On Windows, hold down Control-Alt-Shift.)
If you mashed on those keys quickly enough, youll get an alert when the splash screen appears offering to Delete InDesign Preferences File?. Click Yes, but dont release the modifier keys while you do so, because youre going to get a second alert to which you should also click Yes.
Now you can release the keys and InDesign will complete the boot-up process with fresh, clean Preferences.
Nothing happened so my program is still missing preferences, menu items and toolbars. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

First, you need to realize that resetting preferences will put them back to ground zero, not the way they were the last time you were happy.
You can try the key combination again and see if you are any faster (we're talking near instantaneous) or you can open your user profile, show hidden files and folders and navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Adobe\InDesign\Version 4.0 and rename the two files InDesign Defaults and InDesign SavedData.
In your case, a better first option, I think, would be to try System Restore which you'll find in System Tools under the Programs > Accessories heading on the start menu. Go back to the first restore point before you tried to open the file, if you can.
In any case, for you to open a CS3 .inx file you will need to be fully patched the the last CS2 update, and you should expect to see some text reflow issues, as well as missing any CS3 features that the author used which aren't supported in CS2.

  • How do I create an animation from stills (100's of stills!)

I have a load of still images that I want to make a straightforward animation from. Current I have to for each frame:
click still image to get it in the 'viewer'
select duration box and enter 1 frame
Drag from viewer to canvas 'insert' box
With hundreds and by the time I have finished thousands of images this is very slow and labour intensive. Is there a simpler way to do this? I am sure in my distant memory there was a free third party program I used where you could select all the stills and it would string them together but ideally I would like to do it in FCE.
    Thanks
    Ed
    Only other points to note are;
    Images are 1504 x 1000
    Version 3.5 of FCE
    Still on OSX 10.4

Put your stills in a folder numbered sequentially in the order in which you want them with leading zeros. Set the still import preference in the second panel of user preferences to one frame. Import the folder. Drag the folder to the timeline.
You can also open the image sequence in the QT pro player, set the frame rate you want, and convert it to a QuickTime movie.

  • Livecycle Designer ES 8.2 and Preferences Folder

    Hello all,
the question I'm asking here is actually related to a different issue, so I'll give the whole context.
I have issues with image fields in Livecycle Designer, no matter if I use the one that comes with Acrobat Pro 8.0 or 9.0.  Image fields have at least one bug:  The anchor position in the layout is ignored, the image is *always* anchored top middle.  In version 8.0, the picture was always scaled to fill the rectangle, causing a skewed aspect ratio, no matter what scaling option was selected.
After talking for more than 1 hour to the Adobe customer support, I was told to see if the Preferences folder was there (not sure what this has to do with the image field issue, but whatever).  It's supposed to reside in C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\9.0 and is supposed to contain 2 folders and 1 file.  Oh yeah, I'm driving Windoze XP ...  For my user, I do not see the preferences folder at all, other users that log in to my coputer, the preferences folder exists, but is empty.  I tried uninstalling Acrobat Pro and re-installing as local admin as suggested by customer service, but still no preference folder.
My question is:  What could be the reason for not having the preferences folder?
    Thanks and Cheers

  • No Mail Preferences Need to Look at My Account Settings

Ok - Someone got my email password and I had to call my email company. They had me change my password. But now I cannot send mail. I can receive it. And all my other email address are working. Something happened with my mail awhile ago where when I click on mail preferences the only thing that comes up is a box with rules. I don't know how to fix this. I have tried everything that I can think of. I have browsed through here, but I am not too familiar with this new OSX mac stuff. So if anyone can help me I would really appreciate it. Oh, maybe this will help you too, I downloaded Eudora, a mac email program (cause there are no mail programs out there for us mac lovers) and I set this up. I am still getting the same problem, I cannot send emails. Which leads me to believe there is something I am missing.

When you have opened Preferences (which isn't giving you any choices), still with Preferences pane open the next thing to do is to go back up to the top menu bar click on View
and from that will be a choice Show Toolbar (in preferences)
After doing that you should once again have General, Accounts, Junk Mail, Fonts and colours, Viewing, Composing, signature, Rules.
You are only seeing Rules, because the toolbar is not showing.

"Accusing me of smoking crack lol... wish i had been though because at least then i would have an understandable reason for things not working right !"
LOL !!! You are too funny. About the "smoking crack" thing though, that's what I felt I went through for many years when my cards stopped working and having to 1) replace, 2) work, 3) break down and repeat the same process, until I started building things on my own. Even still I built my own machine, it does come with it's own issues, but now I'm in more control of those issues at 1/3 the cost and the same speed (if not faster) and that's my WHOLE POINT So when are you going to stop being tired of 3 step process of how Graphics Cards work on a Mac? You know the definition of "insanity" right? I don't think I need to define it for you. Later all...

  • Preferences: Beating a horse that should already be dead

I installed Safari and set up my preferences and like many other people, my preferences did not take. I am using Windows XP at work on a corporate network so I made sure the Preferences.plist file was everywhere I thought it should be and still my preferences do not stick.
Basically, I put that file in C:\Documents and Settings\username(every username on my machine)\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer\Safari. I put it in Local Settings\Application Data and straight into the Application Data folder.
What else can I do? I am already sending a bug report multiple times per day

  • Duration of stills

    Hi people!
I'm a COMPLETE beginner with premiere pro, the problem I'm having is changing the duration of stills.
I keep right clicking the still to change it's duration to 4.30 seconds, but then it just changes back to 5.05 seconds and I don't understand why.
I've googled it and people keep saying to change the duration of stills by changing it to the number of frames i want, but I don't know what they are talking about.
I want every clip to last a different amount of time, is there way of doing this?
    Thank you
-someone who is at the verge of breaking their laptop.

That depends how many frames per second you're working with.  In the UK, we're 25 fps,  In the US it is usually 30 fps (29.97).
So, in the UK, 125 frames = 5 seconds.  In the US = 4 seconds and 5 frames (5 frames = 1/6th second in the US). So...
    4 and a half seconds:  UK = 112 frames. US = 135 frames
HOWEVER, changing the default duration of stills in Preferences ONLY alters still that you will import.  It does NOT change the duration of stills already imported.
To change the duration of stills already imported, right click on the still  - either in the Timeline or Project Panel  - and change the "Duration/Speed" setting.

  • Missing Final Cut Pro 7 preferences. Where could they have gone?

I've been using Final Cut Pro 7 for years on my MacBook Pro with no problems at all. Back in the fall, I noticed something weird happening in my timeline. Every time the cursor would approach an edit point, the playback with stop for a beat then jump ahead. This has happened with every project that I've imported since then.
I wanted to trash my preferences and, lo and behold, none of the four files (nor their folders) are anywhere to be found.
I even reinstalled the Final Cut Pro application and, even after opening one of my old projects, there was still no preferences folder.
    Help!

Can you confirm you are running OSX 10.7.5?
The easiest way to deal with FCS preferences is to download Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion (free) at

  • Where are all Final Cut Studio preferences located?

I have to re-install Final Cut Studio 3 (FCS), due to a failed install. Support sent me new audio discs, which seemed to have caused the crash of the install. Those also failed.
Support needs time to investigate. In the meantime, I want to wipe everything so we can start anew. I have trashed and emptied everything I could find that was FCS and that support could think of at the time. But when I install, there is still something that remembers the previous install and won't let me install from the beginning.
I have another internal drive, also with OS Leopard (10.6.4) on it, which I use to check my Boot drive with Disk Warrior, Drive genius, and/or TTPro. I booted from that drive and that drive allowed the FCS installer to start from the beginning, with no memory of previous installs. I didn't do the install, but now I know that my boot drive still hase preferences or something from FCS, and I would like to trash all of them so the install disc can start fresh. In fact I would like to completely uninstall FCS, before trying any new installs.
Can anyone tell me exactly where the files that contain the FCS info reside?
Also, can anyone tell me how to uninstall the whole Final Cut Studio 3?
    Thanks,

Please, Just the install of the Install disc of FCS too me hours. Then there are multiple DVDs, each of which takes a long time. I already did it twice, getting as far as the end of the first Sound files dic, and having to start over. And the technician, who is a member of the special team that handles FCS, took me through long periods of trying a lot of things, each of which took time. And it is not just that the applications cannot be removed my Apple (so I thought), but that what remained and could not be removed so far by Apple Tech Support, crashes the installation and does not allow the software to be reinstalled. I don't think I made that clear.
And I don't believe you if you were installing either of the Microsoft Office Suites from scratch. They are long installs first, which installs are then followed by many updates, one after the other. And I have both the latest and the previous Microsoft Offices on my computer for various reasons.
Then we come to the Adobe Suite CS4 and CS5. I have both, again for various reasons. Also very long installs.
And a lot more. It takes a long time, especially because I cannot sit there and watch it steadily.
I tend 7 computers here, including 2 PCs, and an careful install of a new computer is a major endeavor, in my opinion.
And the Adobe software has to be specifically uninstalled centrally with Adobe, in order for it to be allowed to be reinstalled on a new installation.
It is time intensive work and can be very aggravating.
It is since Saturday, and Apple support has not gotten back to me, even though an inquiry about it a couple of days ago told me they should get back to me yesterday or today.
And if I do an full system re-install, there is no assurance at all that the same problem that happened twice will not happen again, i.e., is it the software copy I have, or what? The technician tried to find the problem and then decided to consult the rest of the team.
Anyway, the uninstaller worked on a copy of my boot drive, which I have now made my boot drive, because I improved the Partition layout.
I thank you for the help getting rid of FCS, and I will consider whether I try again, or just return the software. Either way I will live happily.

  • Toast and wonky preferences on a Powerbook G4?

I am having trouble even force quitting Toast in Tiger. the machine has to be completely shut down by holding the power button.
I notice that the Toast preferences and even some others, while they have the correct name have the Microsoft Entourage symbol on the icon. What is happening here?
I have run Disk Utility, Diskwarrior and deleted the preferences and still the preference icons are wrong and Toast 8 will not shut down or run either for that matter.
    Help
    paddy

    First,
What versions of Toast and M$ are you using?
Be sure to update to the latest ones as there have been some fixes to both.
    Second
What are you doing with toast? DVD's, Movies, Data, etc?
The reason I ask this is I had a similar problem a while back while trying to make some DVD Movies. The problem turned out to be that even though the file sizes showed the correct size the actual files internally were corrupted. I trashed them and re-exported the files to make the DVD Movies.
Search for Roxio on the hard drive you will find these Prefs to delete:
    com.roxio.Toast.plist
    Roxio Toast Prefs
You may also want to delete com.apple.finder.plist
Sometimes one has ot manualy reset the icons via info as the icon will sometimes get imbedded into the app's info.
Have you tried to also create another user account and see if it happens when that user is logged in? If it doesnt then it is within the login that it happens on, if it happens still then you may need to reinstall the app. You may need to trash all references to the app including the app itself.
More than likely you have a conflict or corrupted file.
Worst case though is hardware failure of one type or another.
    Good luck

  • How can I view my friend's itunes library?

Is there any way that my friend and I could browse each other's itunes music libraries?  It would be ideal to be able to click and sample songs as well.  We don't want to share the actual music files.  This is strictly to expose one another to each other's music, and hopefully broaden our scope.  Any music we're interested in, we would purchase from the itunes store (or elsewhere).
Is there any way to do this?  I read an Apple support article (link below) explaining how to share itunes playlists.  It even had the ability to sample songs.  This would have worked out pretty well, except I can't find the option in the current itunes(11.0.5).  Was this feature taken off?
    http://www.apple.com/findouthow/music/itunes.html#playlists-shareplaylists
I read there was a program called 'Mojo' that did exactly what I'm looking for, except that it went an (illegal) step further and allowed friends to download each other's music.  Which is probably why it no longer exists...
    Any help would be appreciated.

Sharing playlists still works - Preferences/Sharing - but only if the computers are on the same network, so you and your friend would need to be in each other's homes to be able to share playlist through iTunes. Otherwise, you can export your playlist and your friend can either read it - he'll need an XML viewer - or import it into his iTunes:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1156612/itunes_playlist_share.html
There was a playlist sharing service:
    http://www.getplaylists.com
but it seems to be dead now.
