Still no surround 5.1 on Gigabyte 945GME-DS2

The patch for acer 8940g didn't work for me. Even with the kernel 3.3.3-1, channels are mixed. Does anyone have a similar problem?

I putted your .asoundrc in my home directory and than loged out and in and, firstly mixer in the taskbar crashed with message:
"Plugin "Mixer" unexpectedly left the panel, do you want to restart it?
The plugin restarted more than once in the last 60 seconds. If you press Execute the panel will try to restart the plugin otherwise it will be permanently removed from the panel."
- which heppens now all the time when I try to change volume with scrool button.
And I could not start alsamixer. I got a lot of error. Should I do it again and paste that error here?

AirPlay and surround sound

Hi, set up my apple tv . I have managed to get everything working ok but when I use the AirPlay option I cannot get my surround sound to work, it only comes thought the speakers on my tv. My current scary lead goes from my sky tv box to the DVD player that has the surround sound. However, when I set my scary from tv to DVD p,Ayer there is still bNo surround sound- do I need ton change a setting?

I have no idea what your current setup is, despite your brief description. Go back a few steps to 'troubleshooting 101'. If your using the HDMI only, your ATV will output audio to whatever device the HDMI is connected to (uh, your TV?)
If you want audio sent to any other device, you must use the digital optical connector. It is always active, so no changes in your ATV are necessary - just hook the optical cable to your surround receiver, configure your receiver to work with the optical input you have the ATV connected to, and it will work.

I have new x-fi music soundcard and my old Cambridge Soundworks DTT2500 System. When I set the speakermode of the x-fi to 5. speakers it doesn't work correctly. The speaker test for the rear speakers is only audible on the left and right speakers. I am using the spdif/digital out of the x-fi card and the spdif in on my speaker system. I tried all options on the soundcard and on the speaker system, but I still don't get a successfull test on all speakers!?When I play a DVD using the spdif out, the DD signal is identified and it works fine. When I use the analog connectors for front and rear and turn on 4/4. speaker mode, the front and rear speakers are also working correctly. You can't get surround from the S/PDIF outs. If it's DVD that's been encoded already, then you could get it, but you won't get it otherwise. You won't be able to use the digital outs for games if you still want surround. Games don't use typical surround sound. I use the analog outs and it sound OK. No surround sound while watching cable TV

We have been trying to get our Coby 5.1 system to play surround sound while using our cable/dvr box. It works just fine when watching dvds, but we can't figure out what is wrong when connecting it to cable box. We connected an optical cable from our cable box to the dvd player...and still nothing. We have picture and sound from the projector, but no surround sound when watching TV...but we still have surround sound when watching dvds. Our projector does not have an HDMI cord, although it is an HD projector. Any help will be greatly appreciated! We have tried everything we can possibly think of! Thanks!

Check the settings on your cable box to see if it can put out a signal that is compatible with your audio system and select the appropriate output that works for your setup. Look for a selection that says Dolby Digital.

Surround sound in ALSA in KDE and dmix, a working case

After two days of searching the web, reading manuals, typing and constant rebooting, I ended up with a configuration for ALSA that works fine 95% of the time. Right now I am listening to 5.1 surround sound (through upmixing) from any app I want (flash not installed, so not tested). I am writing it here 'cause I didn't find this answer to any other forum and the solution on Archwiki didn't work, so it might help a lot of people. The following .asoundrc is a slightly modified version of a .asoundrc file that could be found on alsa.opensrc.org before it went down (found it on wayback machine). Here it is:

This will allow for both input and output mixing, togther with 5.1 sound. I think it can be summarized to 5 or 6 lines but my brain is too bloated with all the linux audio crap right now to even think about it..
In some cases, in KDE, when some phonon based apps like Bangarang or Amarok are the first ones to produce sound after boot, then the sound device is locked and no other app will be able to access it and play anything. If I exit the app, play sth else, eg speakertest -c 6, then everything works fine and I can have any app produce sound (even Amarok and Bangarang). In these wicked circumstances, I noticed that KDE notifies me of some sound devices not working and falling back to some other ones (that do not necessarily have a different name). Also the login sound doesn't play and maybe it is due to this that the notification appears. In any case, after rebooting the whole thing (usually) doesn't repeat.
Another thing with ALSA that mixed things more is that, in case you have a usb webcam plugged in, sometimes its microphone becomes the default device and the above .asoundrc will stop working. To prevent this simply change the order the devices are loaded by putting the following in a file under /etc/modprobe.d:

I am curious to see if this works for anyone else. Also, I don't know how to use alsa-equal with this .asoundrc, so any advice is welcome. (By the way, I never got alsa-equal to work with Amarok).

Well, yes and no.. In KDE running fuser (and lsof) shows "kde4" and "kmix", but I doubt these are actually using the device, because, even with software mixing disabled, they are still listed, yet I can still play surround sound with speakertest.
Also, in KDE, I diabled/enabled (on the fly) samplerate_best several times while trying things, without restarting KDE and the results where mixed. The same with your .asoundrc and other configurations. As a conclusion, while in KDE ALWAYS restart it to be sure that the new .asoundrc is used (fastest way ctrl+alt+bksp to kill X).
A question:
Generally, in linux, everything uses ALSA (ok, also OSS) to produce sound. So .asoundrc is always in effect no matter what app we are using, right? However, before even enabling surround sound, with alsaequal installed as the deffault device (as te wiki suggests), the equalizer was used only by apps talking directly to ALSA (eg VLC, speakertest) and was ignored by phonon apps. Any explanation? On the contrary, VLC seems to ignore .asoundrc as far as surround sound and samplrate_best are concerned. What is happening?
In any case, how could I change .asoundrc to make use of alsaequal as the default, together with 5.1 sound and dmixing?

New rig problem: SB Audigy successfully installs but there's no sound

Recently I tried putting a simple little rig together but am running into an issue getting my immortal SoundBlaster Audigy gamer PCI card working with this new system.
I can confirm the card works, however when used in this new build, windows detects the card successfully & I install the newest drivers. Windows says the device is working, but there's no sound regardless of analog/digital bring selected or what output devices like headphones/speakers are used.. & no, the volume isn't muted
I also set the Audigy as the default device & selected 5.1 surround sound speakers in windows settings & I disabled the onboard sound in the bios, however the drivers are still installed, don't think that makes a difference though?
I feel like I tried everything, not sure why there's no sound. Like I said I can confirm the card works as does the PCI slot (just tested it with a LAN card). The board i'm working with here only has 1 standard PCI slot, so I can't try the card in another slot. But I tested it in another one of my systems just now running XP SP3 and it works flawlessly.
Did a fresh install of Windows XP/Vista/7 & tried getting the card working but the results were all the same. Successfully detected & installed, but no sound.
I'm currently trying to get it working on Windows XP SP3. My board is a gigabyte a55m-ds2, running AMD A4 3300 2.5GHZ APU, 4 GB ram.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've had this card literally for about 10 years and it's never gave me any issues whatsoever, until now

QuickTime expects video files with separate video and audio tracks, but many MPEG formats used a muxed (multiplexed) single track that contains both. Therefore, iTunes & the iPod (both of which use QuickTime) only show the video and no sound.

Sound Blaster Audigy + Logitech G51 problem

Before I replaced the motherboard, graphics card, and processor, I had the SB Audigy [8000] version of the software for my Creative Sound Blaster Audigy sound card. All of the new versions I have downloaded, including the old one, are now [BF00]. Also for some reason, the drivers on the CD install [BF00] as well. Previously it didn't. I have the Logitech G5 surround sound speakers, and when I try to use the Matrix mode in-game, only some speakers will work. When I turn off the matrix, it becomes more surround sound, but I still do not hear some things - It shouldn't be doing this when the matrix is not turned on. When the matrix is not turned on, you would only be able to hear from the front left and right speakers only. When not playing a game, the Matrix seems to work fine, however when I don't have it turned on, I still get surround sound. Again, that shouldn't be happening.
The Matrix mode in game seems to not play all of the sounds in-game, and while not in-game, I still get surround sound without the matrix mode on. This shouldn't be happening; I should only be getting the sound from the front left and right speakers when the matrix is not turned on.
Outside of games, when I turn the bass and treble via the sound controls by the time display all the to the max (Not the acutal volume control for the speakers) it sounds garbled. Before this, that wouldn't happen.
Its all worth mentioning that for some reason, my computer does not have the " Audio Device on Definition Audio Bus " driver installed. My computer cannot find the drivers for it though.
With the [8000], when you didn't have the matrix turned on, you would only be able to hear the two speakers in the front. I cannot find the [8000] version online. Does anyone have any idea what the cause of this is?

I'm having a similar problem as well i've had my card for a year now and its just this high pitched sound. it doesn't happen right away but it happens after a period of time of using sound of any type music, games....it getting iritating and gives me a headache i think we have a simlar problem i've looked into the drivers and i'm not all to sure what i need none seem to mach my needs? does anyone have any idea's please help!

Need Help with iMac 350 - Won't boot - keyboard or mouse not working!

I've scoured the web looking for answers, and can't find any, so maybe someone here would be kind enough to help. I'm working on an imac 350 blueberry for my sister and I'm having all sorts of trouble.
She bought it last week, it started up (8.6 os) no problem. Powered up and down a few times, then all of a sudden, it won't boot. I'm currently getting blinking folder/happymac/question mark when trying to start up.
Here's the big problem - the keyboard and mouse do not work now. I've tried three different mice and three keyboards and no dice with any of them. I have the 8.6 CD from her previous imac (bondi), and I can hear it spinning, but there is no way to start up from cd.
I've also tried 2 other hard drives with the same results.
Tried resetting CUDA on logic board, taking out battery, no change. Bought new battery- no change.
I would love to at least get the keyboard working to see if I can even startup from cd, anyone have any clues on how to get it working? The strange thing is that the keyboard has a power on button, and it works to start the thing up, but dies when it tries to boot. Sometimes I just get a grey screen with the pointer icon, and I can move the pointer with the mouse for a second or two, then no response.
I appreciate any help or suggestions on locating the issues!

When I said "but dies when it tries to boot" and "..then no response." I meant that the keyboard works to power up the computer, but won't work for anything else. So, I am figuring that the usb ports are supplying power to the keyboard and mouse, but the usb ports aren't relaying information from the keyboard or mouse.
How do you know the mouse isn't working? Won't you have to wait until later in the boot to tell?
The poweron key is a special case. I think that it works by lowering/changing the voltage on one of the usb cables. I read about this somewhere. Anyway, this function was eliminated from later usb keyboards and macs. Maybe a working power button doesn't mean what you think.

Could you try powering up from the machine? Is there a power button on the lower right of the machine?

The letters are in lower case. Hold all down then poweron the machine. I'd poweron from the machine as apposed to the keyboard.
You could try another usb keyboard.
We actually did boot up the computer several times with it upside down. Not for any reason, except it's become a real PIA to flip it over every two minutes to start it, then take it apart and boot again. When booting either upside down or right side up it shows the same thing - blinking folder w/finder icon and question mark.
Yes, I agree. You could try removing the clear plastic around the bottom of the machine. At least you will not have to slide in the carriage. Note. The tv portion will still be surrounded by plastic! Don't remove the plastic around the tv!

Richard: Is this the orginal keyboard? When did Apple get rid of the poweron key from the keyboard? My iMac 600 didn't have the key and my iMac 233 does.

Images in my Aperture 3 libraries have lost their original "date created"

Just made a very discouraging discovery regarding the "date created" field for my photos. Noticed that all photos in any project default to the same date created, even if they weren't shot on the same date. Not sure what date they're all defaulting to (it's different for each project) but I've noticed two oddities:
1) The mm/dd/yy - mm/dd/yy when you view the projects by name show up with the correct date spans but when you look at each individual photo in the project, they all have the same created date.
2) If you transfer a photo from one project to another, it's creation date will change to the same creation date as all the other photos in the new project. Transfer it to a different project, and the same thing happens.
So, in short, the creation date doesn't seem to be locked into the original date when the photo was taken. What gives? Is this a bug or am I missing something? The thought that I might have to go in and re-enter all the creation dates on my thousands of photos is a bit exasperating.

There is still confusion surrounding this issue fore me.
There are three metadata views which have a Date field, General, Photo Info and EXIF Info. In each of these views the capture date and time is correctly displayed for the selected image.
The IPTC Core metadata view has a *Date Created* field. If I switch from any other metadata view to IPTC Core, the Date Created will be correct for the image that was selected when I changed views.
However if I select a different image while still in IPTC Core view, the date created does not change. Only by switching to any other metadata view then back to IPTC Core does the correct date and time display for the newly selected image.
Is this by design or is it a bug?

TERRIBLE Vista drivers/suppo

I'm forced to use vista (new machine, raid setup, windows xp cannot cope with the raid disks). I'm mucking around with Vista more than a week I generally surprised how well its working. However I got a bottleneck, a HUGH one that degrades my machine to a bubble-headed sound system when it starts giving any kind of sound... SB Audigy 2 ZS Gamer.
Let me say that on windows xp I couldn't ask for better card and performance. Drivers working perfectly, the original install disc with the webupdate is flawless.
HOWEVER...
The original drivers disc is not compatible with vista. It does install -with errors though-. The webupdate driver... ohh man that is like a chewed down bone throwed onto my face! You have 20% of the configuration options then on the original discs! But hey I wouldn't say anything if my install discs would work properly on vista.
-Unable to setup EAX in a proper way, no CMSS2 option (which standing for full 3d instead of the stereo upmix CMSS).
-I'm lucky that the original speaker settings applet is working from the install disc! Otherwise I couldn't redirect my bass to use my 5. speaker system (that is yet flawless and still one of the best sound system so no, this is NOT a speaker flaw!)
-The rear speakers acting like they are broken. Quiet, noisy, not even mentionable what they are performing just now when I'm listening to music. I got no *real* 5. sound now. ;(
-The webupdate latest driver and the settings I set in the control panels seems hindering each other... Of course they do this isn't a vista compatible installation isn't it (except the webupdated drivers but thats not even worth mentioning as I say those settings and speaker configuration is zero)...
So all in all... Terrible how this is sounding and terrible that I got no chance to even configure the stuff properly... Because I could do that under windows xp perfectly.
Any chance that I'm able to get an install disc for vista and that the nice fully functional control panel would work on vista somehow?
Really hope that someone laughingly throws me a link for a download disc with original vista installation discs that I could use and be happy forever and ever.

ITs an unofficial driver. TBH I'm using it but still quote:
- Surround Mixer 4.00.63 (Windows XP only)
- Advanced EQ and Special FX not available on Vista - These presets don't work on Windows Vista.
Seriously! A fun have to update the drivers?!! Honestly I'm not going to buy another sound card because of non-supported drivers. But if I really forced to do that then it will definitely not a creative product with this many driver issues.
I would love to sound my voice into the wise president of creative or the shareolders what would they say if they hear such words from a buyer... :S
We are unable to use our product on the same quality on new operating system because of the lack of drivers! We demand support for our money! :S

IPhoto library contains lots of gb but will not open pictures after upgrade to iPhoto ´11

Upgraded from iPhoto ´08 to iPhoto ´11 (9.5.1) and to OS Maverick (10.9.1).
In "Finder" the library still seem to contain lots of gigabytes of data, but when iPhoto open the library it reads 0 photos. I have tried rebuilt (option+cmd key when opening iPhoto), iPhoto library manager, I have purchased aperture which acts just like iPhoto. Quite a few pictures missing, starting to become desperate - anyone with other ideas? Any help appreciated!

Give this a try:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
1. Open the library package like this.
2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note: your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

Exporting completed logo

Hello,
I have completed a logo in Illustrator CS6 for my business to be used for printing and a website I am trying to build. I have made the art board fit to the logo and saved a jpg version in the Save For Web option but have noticed the white art board area around the logo has been saved also. Is it possible to get rid of the art board?
When attempting to use the logo whilst building a web page and importing the logo, the white art board is still there surrounding the logo which means the logo can only be used on a white web page.

Exporting video for Palm T5

I have a new Palm pda which plays Quick Time videos, but I can't get them to fill the 320x480 screen. I tried rotating them, which at least gets them in the right direction, after exporting them as Quick Time movies, but they show up in a much reduced size. I tried setting the screen pixels in Quick Time video properties to 320x480 but that makes no difference when viewed on the Palm (which, if it matters, converts them in the synching process to .asf files).

Well, that worked in the sense that it produced a nice image on the Palm screen, but still one surrounded by a big black border with more than enough area to allow the image to be quite a bit bigger without changing its aspect ratio or going beyond the edge (so to speak). It's probably something to do with the Palm importing procedure, although the same thing does not happen to still pictures from iPhoto.

ITunes U syncronization

Hi to all,
I have a number of iTunes U podcast lessons downloaded in local into my library and I sync these lessons into my iPhone 5.
When I connect the iPhone to the computer iTunes starts to sync all the lessons, every time, even those that are not modified. It 's normal?
I have about 5gb of iTunes U contents and every time I sync I have to wait for the copy of all content.
Otherwise, the music sync copy only the contents that have been modified or added.

I'm having the same problem. This is very weird! I deleted I-tunes U and it's still downloading episodes and eating up gigabytes of space!!! Do I have a virus? I'm deleting files but the APP is deleted!!!!
How can it continue downloading when the app is deleted?
