Still Pictures Pixelated in FCP

I just finished a piece where I incorporated video footage and stills from a photographer. I exported the project out using DV/DVCPRO and for some reason the pictures became blurry and pixelated when I put the project on a DVD. All the pictures are clear when it is viewed on the internet.
To make matters more confusion I put together another slide show in FCP just using JPEG Files (in fact some of the JPEG were used in both videos) and all the stills came out perfect. The second video I exported the project out in the same manner DV/DVCPRO.
Why did this happen?
What can I do to solve this problem in FCP?

Hi -
Are you scaling up the vertical images (479 x 639) to fill frame? If so you are enlarging them quite a bit, and anytime you enlarge an image, you will see the sharpness decrease.
Couple this with your DV codec, which is at the bottom of acceptable imaging codecs to begin with, and your expectation may be exceeding what the combination of small source images and editing codec can supply.
And, to add to the problem, jpegs can range from very high quality to very, very compressed images. If your original images are highly compressed jpegs, that may be adding to the problem.
The best way to help with this problem would be to obtain higher quality source images - the same images in a large frame size. As you have already discovered you get much better results reducing a large image to fit the screen then enlarging a small image to fit the screen.
If this in not possible, you just need to use your judgement as to how far you can enlarge the image before it starts to look objectionable.

  • Still pictures size in FCP HD

What will be the size and format for the pictures to be edited in FCP in a NTSC HD project? I know DPI is not important in video.
I am planning to zoom a little bit on some pictures.
Is it better to convert the pictures to the Apple RGB color space in Photoshop? Is it ok to use the HDTV 1920X1080 preset?
I`m going to add the pictures to a project that was filmed with a Z1 Sony.
    Thanks.

I'm a bit confused by your post. Your heading mentions FCP HD, which is version 4.5 (the only version of FCP release that had the HD moniker as part of its name). The only HD video format that version works with is DVCPro HD - it does NOT work with the HDV recorded by the Sony Z1 you mention in the body of your post.
FWIW, FCP needs the images to be in RGB color mode - NOT Grayscale, Indexed or CMYK. I'm referring to "color mode" - NOT "color space" as your post indicates and NOT color profile as the "Apple RGB" would indicate.

  • Still pictures from new canon XL H1

    Hi everyone,
Why are there horizontal lines showing up in still pictures pulled out of footage shot with the new canon XL H1?
Footage is shot at 1080i, and 60 frames a second, directly into the Panasonic deck AJ-HD1200 via SDI out, and so supposedly uncompressed. Imported into FCP and the still pictures are saved as a tiff without compression.
Horizontal lines show up around edges where contrast is higher or where the object was moving.
    Am I doing something wrong?
    Thank for your help!

These are likely interlacing artifacts and there are two ways to get rid of the them.
    1. capture a still with NO motion in the frame
    2. use the deinterlace filter in photoshop. It will throw away 1 field (1/2 of the image) then interpolate between the remaining pixels to maintain the pixel count. The amount of degredation of the resulting image depends heavily on the original image quality.
    good luck.

  • Still pictures for HD

When I prepare still pictures for HD, should I save them at 72 dpi?

DPI is irrelevant in video world.
What matters are the pixel counts (width and height measured in pixels).
    For DV/NTSC, you need a minimum of 720x 540
For 720, you need a minimum of 1280x720
For 1080, you need a minimum of 1920x1080
You'll want a few more pixels than those sizes if you plan on zooms and/or pans. Just be aware that the maximum still image size FCP will deal with is 4000x4000 pixels but it doesn't do you any good to have a great number more pixels than you need. FCP doesn't have the most elegant scaling engine.

  • Still pictures lose resolution when transition added?

i'm making a slideshow in FCP using still pictures. when i add a disolve, or key frame a crossfade between two pictures the pictures lose their sharpness/resolution. the last frame before the dissolve ends the picture remains sharp, but as soon as the picture comes up by itself it drops to a lower quality. i hope that makes sense.
the problem only occurs on some of the pictures i scanned, but not all that were scanned (problem doesn't occur with pictures that came straight from a digital file (i.e. a memory card/camera). i scanned the pictures with a resolution setting of 200.
any ideas with what i'm doing wrong? any thoughts, criticisms, are greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance!

the clips exhibit the problem both rendered, unrendered, and exported.
    thanks for responding nick!
oh, and i like where you're from nick, but i couldn't find the answer when i consulted it.

  • Premiere Elements 8 - Still pictures in PE are blurred compared to original

My system is Intel Q6600 CPU, Windows 7 64bit, 6GB memory, 1TB C: drive, 2TB E:drive, NVIDIA GeForce GT 220 video card, Premiere Elements 8, using Microsoft Office Picture manager to look at still originals.
The Premiere Elements 8 project settings include editing mode = DVNTSC and Frame size = 720H x 480V.
My issue is the still picture in PE is blurry compared to the picture viewed in MS Picture Manager.  The pictures are either scanned or downloaded from web pages.  Here is a list of pictures with their file size and pixels count:
Scaned Pics not as good in PE as original
    Cecil about 1921 - 1.5KB - 954x1440 pixels
    Stephson & Nancy Shirey - 147KB - 480x720 pixels
    Cecil about 1927 - 678KB - 768x870 pixels
    Cecil about 1928 - 736KB - 696x948 pixels
    Cecil 193X - 1MB - 1044x1608 pixels
    Ceceil HS basketball team - 2.4MB - 2070x1416 pixels
    Cecil 1941 at gas station - 250KB - 924x1482 pixels
    Cecil Marian 1942 gas station - 336KB - 1092x1746
    pixels
Web Pics not as good in PE as download
    Cotton_field 1928 - 372KB - 1600x960 pixels
    Cotton plant 17KB - minor degrade - 350x304 pixels
    Turner School 1919 - 22KB - 450x275 pixels
    Douglas Aircraft Front - 299KB - 720x587 pixels
I burned a trial DVD to see if the picture quality would be better after processing onto DVD but it was not.
What can I do to improve PE picture quality?

Use Photoshop or Photoshop Elements to scale the pictures before you import into PreElements
    Photo Scaling for Video http://forums.adobe.com/thread/450798
Also, do be aware that photo dpi (dots per inch) does NOT translate to video... I don't have the exact number handy, but I think a DVD resolution video is "about" 72 dpi (BluRay is higher, but since I don't do BluRay I have not even a guess at picture resolution)

  • Enlarging still pictures

I have added some still pictures as a slide show.  With some of these old pictures (not digital) I've cropped them to remove people who I did not want in the picture.  My picture is now pretty small when I watch my completed video on my TV.  Some of the pictures are all the way to right of the TV screen and some to the left.  Is there a way I can edit these pictures to be centered and larger with the CS4 pro editing while they are in my timeline?

If you are using PrPro CS4, you are in the wrong forum. PrPro CS4's forum is HERE.
However, for what you want, I would do all image editing in Photoshop, as it offers so very much more control.
Not knowing how you plan on delivering this video, I'll just assume NTSC DVD so we have something to work with for this example. That would be a 720 x 480 pixel Frame Size. In Photoshop, do your Cropping, and finally Scale (Image>Image Size) to about 720 x 480. If you wish to Pan on a Zoomed out image, then go up to 1000 x 750 pixels. I would Save_As PSD from Photoshop.
This will get you material that will come very close to fitting your video's Frame Size. If necessary, you could do one of two things: you could choose to enable Scale to Frame Size, or you could Keyframe the fixed Effect>Motion>Scale, and perhaps Motion>Position if necessary. That is also how one animates still images in video, a la the Ken Burns Effect.
    Hope that this helps.
Now, if you have verticals and horizontals, you will be putting these into a horizontal video. This TUTORIAL might give you ideas on how to handle the Aspect Ratio differences.
    Good luck,

  • Still pictures and titles vibrate on my dvds

Still pictures(photos and titles) edited with Final Cut vibrate on the dvds I burn with DVD Studio Pro. What can I do?

How are you exportin g from FCP? You should use Uncompressed (8 bit/10-bit) whihc helps cure some quality issues. Some color combinations also seem to "vibrate" more and also smaller fonts can do that. In general larger fonts (20pt+) Sans serif work well if you can use them.
If you have a bit more detail of the entire workflow you are doing, it mmay point to what the problem may be

  • How to set the default duration for still pictures ?

    Hi there,
At the moment, when I drag a still picture from Viewer window to the Canvas window, a default 10-sec duration of the still picture will appear on the timeline.
How do I set this default to 8 seconds ?
I tried looking at User Preference and System Preference but cannot locate them. Maybe I miss them ?
Can someone help me on this, please ?
    Thanks

Also there is a bug in FCE and FCP which affects PAL.
If you set the still for 8 seconds it will come out at 6 seconds and 20 frames.
So if you want a really exact figure you will have to set it longer by maths or trial and error.
Yes Ian, just noticed that there is a bug !
Mine was set to 12 secs & I always got 10 seconds.
    Now I set to 12 secs & I got 8 seconds.
It looks like it is always 2 seconds less from what you set ?

  • Still Pictures

I have a set of still pictures that are going to be used in Wide definition movie. As an example one of the pictures is 3072 pixels wide and 2304 pixels high. I know that I can import this picture into FCE and then reduce its size so that it fits onto the screen. When I do this, the picture does not totally fit the screen ( there is a black border on both sides). I could also use Photoshop to change the dimensions of the picture to 1280 X 720 and then import. When I do this, the picture fits the entire width of the screen but it seems to me that the proportions of the people in the picture have been slightly distorted. What is the correct way to import stills into FCE?

I want to make a video clip using two still pictures, placing side by side.  I am able to make with only one at a time.  Also, I am able to move the picture using Transform.  But unsuccessfull in making with two stills in same clip.  Thank you for reply.

If you want a Picture in Picture effect, stack one still on top of the other with a connect edit. Use Transform to scale and reposition the top image.

  • Is there a way to add transitions to several still pictures without doing them one at a time

Is there a way to add transitions to several still pictures without doing them one at a time

You don't say which version of the program you're using but, in version 10, if you select several media clips on the timeline at once, you can right-click and select the option to Add Default Transition between them all. (You can also designate any transition as the Default Transition.)
You can also use the Slideshow Creator in the Media panel to apply the Default Transition between any stills you've gathered to create a slideshow from.
And, if you create your slideshow in the Elements Organizer (prior to sending it to Premiere Elements), you can select the option to add random transitions between your slides.
You can learn how to do all of these thing step by step in my books, by the way, if you're interested.
