Still Questions about Backing-Up Itunes

When I tried to reinstall iTunes (9.2.1) library from my external hard drive to a newly installed iTunes 10 on a new HDD, I noticed my play count, ratings, and EQ settings weren't present. Well, the new HDD was a bust in lease than 24 hours. I took out the new busted HDD and put my old HDD back in to my computer with iTunes and upgraded to iTunes 10. . . so I could finally play with my new Touch 4g. I'm getting another new HDD today; I'm going to back-up my iTunes 10 library and then move them to the new HDD.
My question , what am I doing wrong? I thought I read Apples instructions on backing up, and reinstalling an iTunes Library. Thank you for any assistance you can give me.

Thanks Katrina for joining the conversation. To be honest, I had copied and paste my iTunes folder back into Tunes. I'm sure I'm making this far more complicated than it is. Even so, I'd hate to go through 35000 songs and set EQ settings and ratings again. Thanks again for your assistance.
Here's Apples Support Instructions . . . I posted the wrong link but for me I don't think it makes any difference. lol! http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1751

  • Question about backing up iTunes library to hard drive

So I was looking at getting a MacBook Pro, and was going to buy an external hard drive (WD My Passport for Mac) to transfer the files to the new computer. I was wondering if my movie / digital copies will go to the external hard drive as well as music & everything. Also how would I go about doing the transfer, I'm sure it will be pretty easy to figure out just want to make sure everything goes to the new computer.
    Thanks

it may not be necessary to get an external HD, although you could use it for back up purposes.
one simple solution to transferring your complete library would be to connect the two Macs with a firewire cable, boot the source Mac in _*Target Disk Mode*_, and copy the entire iTunes folder (not just the iTunes music folder) from <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the source to <MacintoshHD>/users/<yourname>/music on the target (overwriting the iTunes folder in place there).
launching iTunes on the MBP should then take you to the exact same library you were used to on the old machine.

  • Please delete my question about backing up. I already found my answer.

    Hi,
Please delete my question about backing up. I already found my answer. Just wanted to make sure that it was okay to backup the iPod_Control folder. I've read that other people have done this and re-imported back to iTunes. Here's the question I submitted. When I get my iPod back in order I am gonna backup the iPod_Control folder .

No urgent reason to delete it. Just reply to yourself as above, if you care to, and then mark your own answer as correct. You won't get any points, but it will be clear you are closing out the topic.

  • Few Questions About Backing Up Files

Okay, I'm pretty new to this, and have checked the support pages, but I do have some questions about backing up my files.
I'm running out of room on my computer's hard drive, and am wondering if burning the library to CDs will allow me to quickly restore my library on my computer when I sync my iPod.
I know that when an iPod syncs with a comp, it will lose any songs that aren't on the library list. (If I deleted some songs to free up room, I'd lose those songs on my iPod when I synced it up.) Is there a way to prevent that from happening? Some way to save a headache continuously restoring my iPod's library every time I want to add a new song or recharge it?
I'm on Windows XP, if that matters.

Best and easiest solution is to buy an external hard drive. Then simply drag and drop your iTunes folder from your internal onto the external and copy the entire library.

  • Questions about mac mini iTunes server, streaming to macbook pro, ipads, etc.

I'm thinking about getting a mac mini to work with my NAS as a iTunes server. I have a bunch of questions about this. I will have two iPhones, a few iPads, and a laptop that will be accessing the files. I have iTunes match. This is basically to keep an always on computer for hosting the music/movies. My questions are as follows . . .
#1 Are there any good, comprehensive guides to show you how to do this?
#2 Can the movies be accessed when not at home on the shared network?
#3 Can the iPads or the macbook pro download the shared movies to be stored locally?
#4 Back to #3, how will it work on my macbook pro with listening to music (I have iTunes match)? Say i go to library and I break out my macbook pro and I don't have internet. What happens if I download music while at home onto my macbook pro to listen to it when I go to the library? Will i start a new library on my macbook pro? How will that mesh with the home server when I come back.
#5 Is there a way to mirror files or folders? So something that I have on my macbook pro will also mirror on the home server.
Thanks for your help on this. I'll post any follow up questions.

    1. I want to replace the Optical drive with a 2TB SATA. can I use this 2.5 inch?
I do not know if it is the same model number, but this one will work in your MBP:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/SEAGATE%20OWC/ST2000LM003M/
    2. I want to replace the HD with a 128GB SSD 840. When I replace these drives, will my OS still be in tact? I have never done this job before.
No. You will have to format the drives in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then install the OSX by using the original install disks.
3.) I want to replace the ram sticks to max capacity. This is 2 2GB sticks, Correct?
No.  An early 17" 2008 MBP will accept 6GB RAM with the following specifications:  200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    4.) Most difficult...
I want to extend the monitor wirelessly to a projector. I thought about using Apple TV and Airplay. However, support for airplay is for MacBooks 2011 and newer. I thought of using a PS3 and the media server, but I think this brings on a format compatibility issue. (my library is so large I could not afford to convert all my movies to MP4.) So, how would you recommend I put my extended monitor with VLC player onto a projector?
Could I possibly connect the MBP to a Mac Mini as an extension? would this work natively? I would rather use a VGA cord than F with 3rd party app BS.
    Cannot help you there.
5..) I want to Bypass iTunes this time around. I would prefer to use Finder and VLC to manage all of my music. I mostly play all my music on shuffle, so, could I create a playlist on VLC with all of my music and play it randomly? (im sure this is possible but i'd like to organize all my plans with confirmation.)
You are not obligated to use iTunes.
6.) Can i upgrade the keyboard to backlit? i've read that this is possible.
All MBPs have back lighted keyboards.  Your either needs a NVRAM reset or a repair.
    Ciao.

  • HT4859 question about backing up iphone

if I back up my iphone/ipad to my computer, then delete a file (say, a picture) from my iphone/ipad, then back up the iphone/ipad again, will the previously deleted file still be backed up, or will it be gone?

The iphone backup that itunes performs does not include photos or itunes content.  You should be including this content in your regular backup of your computer files/docs/pics/music/etc.

  • Questions about movies in iTunes

I like our new iPhone and still need the iPod Classic because of its nice large hard drive (which still doesn't hold all podcasts).
I bought the Classic more for its ability to share pictures than to play music.
Photo Stream's nice, but not for > 1,000 pictures... which for us is not for > 3-4 months ago.
So having all pictures on the Classic helps us share with Mom and others, via the Classic, and better... via the TV screen (via the cables).
To do this, I have, every few weeks, dragged and dropped the home camera movies from iPhoto into iTunes.
When that happens, only the name comes across, no date information.
So, to then have the movies in a good sort order (since we had more than one camera, sorting by file name doesn't work), I needed to manually name each one.
    Questions:
    1) How to get all deails about the movies, especially the date/time stamps, from iPhoto into iTunes?
    2) If we can't do that... is there a way to use automator to, after I highlight a movie or group of movies and press the macro keystrokes (does it support that??), read the number of the current highest-number movie (I rename to Video###) + 1?
With either of these, my life would be easier getting all content onto the iPod Classic.
    On a related note...
Some podcasts don't download in a format that works on the iPod.
Is there a way, beyond the manual one I use, to convert the file formats automatically to the one that plays on iPods?
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Hi there,
I'm new to the part of buying movies in iTunes store and got some questions about it. I live in Cologne, Germany. iTunes settings are set to English (US).
I found myself in the US Store but after all I can't buy items there, which is pretty annoying anyway and got forwarded to the German store, which is missing .. lots of content (e.g. Echelon Conspiracy).
go to the iTunes store. click on "TV Sendungen" (tv shows), and find the entry +exclusive: unaired TV shows in english+ in the upper right corner.

  • Question about Backing Up apps and using Migration tool

Since installing Leopard on my G5 PPC, I have been having a strange problem with the sleep, screen saver. Anytime the system goes into screensaver or sleep, it will not come back and will be frozen. Needless to say I was told by the Mac Genius guys that I need to do a clean install.
So my real question now is about backing up all my apps and then using the migration tool to bring them back into the new install. I was going to attempt to use Carbon Copy Cloner on a second internal drive (Time Machine has never worked for me on my Lacie 500gb.) Once I have a full bootable copy, I will do a clean install (erase and install option) on my original drive, then I guess I am going to use the migration tool.
    So my questions are:
    1) Does this strategy seem like it will work?
    2) Is the migration tool straightforward? IE - Can I pick and choose what to put back on the new install?
    3) Any pitfalls that I should be aware of?
I have already backed up my docs and data to the external, but I have so many programs with plugins installed that getting my apps back the way they are is essential to me.
    Thanks.

Remember Time Machine is designed to do constant, incremental backups of your HDD. If you delete something from the internal HDD of the Mac it will no longer be backed up to the external HDD and will eventually be deleted from the backup archive as time passes and TM keeps doing its backups.
What will probably be a better solution is to simply drag-n-drop the entire iTunes folder to an external HDD for backup and use that as the main iTunes library. The drawback to this is that to play the music you'll need to have the external HDD connected. Unless your plan is not to delete all the music from your MBP, just some of it.

  • Question about BACK BUTTON on MIC

My back button is a thick arrow, not the arrown shown on the pictures of the zen micros. Does that mean I have the old or newer micro.

The original silk screening used finer graphics; the thick back arrow indicates this is the second generation of face plate. That still could go back to Feb or March when the AC adapter and cradle was still included, so that does not necessarily mean your Micro was made last week.
Not sure if that helps ...
    cheers,

  • Question about backing up library in iTunes

Before I post my question, I just wanted to say that I did searches for the answers but couldn't find a concrete answer, so here I am.
I am using iTunes 7.x for Windows (Thinkpad X41 Tablet, Windows XP Pro, 2GB RAM) and it works fine (except for burning CDs but that's another topic!).
I just have one major question: I keep my music and library on an external hard drive, and had to perform a restore of a backup from a week ago. Anyway, I lost ALL of the album art, lyrics, and other customizations I had made to the library. I spent the entire day getting everything back the way it was before and I'm now backing up the library to DVDs. Is my album artwork also backed up with the library, or is there an additional process I have to take to do that because I don't want to have to search for and download all that stuff again.
    Thanks!

When you do your backups, do you back up the itunes metadata library ITL file?
That holds all your ratings, playcounts, etc.

Where are you storing these? By using itunes defaults?

  • I have a tricky question about metadata and iTunes Match!

    Hi,
    Here's my question:
I have purchased some content from the iTunes Store, most of it classical music (although that's not so relevant for my question). The Store metadata is generally poor, so for every purchased item I changed the metadata to suit my tastes (for example, all albums by J.S. Bach have "Bach" as artist, instead of the performer, which is the default in the iTunes Store).
I have read some nightmare stories about metadata reverting to the original iTunes Store metadata, when subscribing to iTunes Match.
I have also understood that iTunes Match does not change the metadata stored locally on my HD.
So here is my question, which is twofold:
    1) Say I bought a song by the artist "John" on the iTunes Store. On my library, I changed the artist field metadata to "Jeff". Now, I subscribe to iTunes Match. Naturally, it will match my song to the one on the Store. On my iPhone, will my song appear under "John", or "Jeff"?
    2) In the same setting, after subscribing, will I still find this song under "Jeff" on my local library? In other words, what will change in my Desktop experience with iTunes?
If having bad metadata when browsing my music on my iPhone is the price to pay for having all my music at my disposal anytime, I won't mind. But if iTunes Match messes up all my hard work getting my library just right on my Desktop, then I have to pass.
Can you guys help me make a decision?
    Thanks,
    Paulo

    Thanks,
Here is what another user got on https://discussions.apple.com/message/23028717#23028717 :
"I can say that when my spouse gifted me with iTunes Match it was a disaster for my music library. It's all classical, and I also standardized names of composers, performers especially when there were multiple ones, and a ton of other stuff. Whatever matched, iTunes just upped and erased that, and used the title, artist, and whatever else from the store."
This is *exactly* what I don't want to see happening! However, I could not find any other reports of what he describes. What do you think?

  • I may have a relativly dumb question about the newer iTunes

ok, I got a video iPod for my birthday, which was in the first week of august, and I put iTunes on my comp, but I haven't updated iTunes since because I have been reading there were so many bugs with the iTunes they released. Then I see they came out with a newer version, but I haven't downloaded it yet because I was afraid about the problems and bugs. My friend told me that apple fixed the problems, but I read a thing or two here about people having trouble with it.
So I guess the question I'm building up to is, should I still be on the catious side and not download the newer iTunes, or is the newer iTunes ok?
Me being computer illiterate, I'm not too sure what my comps insides are running other than Windows XP home edition

Downloading videos on 7.0.2 hasn't worked as well as everyone had hoped. I still can't get mine to work, but i do know a few people who haven't had trouble with the newer itunes.

  • Newbie question about setting up iTunes to sync across multiple computers

    Hi,
Right now I am using iTunes primarily for listening to streaming radio. However in about 2-3 weeks after I move, I am considering importing all my CDs into iTunes.
So my question is this. What can I do before I start that will make my life easier for syncing my iTunes across multiple computers.
I don't expect the computers to connect to each via internet but I do have a 4 GB flash disk and 230 GB firewire drive that could be used. And since one of the computers is MacBook Pro, I could use it in target mode I think.
    Thanks.

Authorization only applies to computers. When you update a device any protected content on the device for which the library is not authorised will be removed. Otherwise no attempt is made to remove content that was added by a now deauthorised library.
There is a separate scheme permitting up to 10 devices (computers, iPhones, iPad or iPod touches) to be registered for automatic downloads of your purchases with a different mechanism for deregistering devices.
Once you have a file on your computer you can physically copy it to any other computer in the same way that you would copy any other file like a Word document, put it on a disk, email it if not too large, burn it to DVD, stick it on an external hard drive or move it over a network. You can use Get Info. To tell you where it is now and you can drop it into the library at the other end.
The user tip shows how to backup the whole library and then update that backup efficiently. Such a backup to a portable drive also provides a possible tool for transporting any content to another computer.
