*** Still trying to get good HDV to DVD image quality

Okay, so I thought I had a good solution, but I'm now back to square one. I'm shooting and editing in HDV with a Sony Z1U. I edit by using Final Cut Pro, 1 monitor and my 32" LCD tv (native resolution of 1366x768). While editing the image, and especially the text looks crystal clear.....beautiful.
My problem is outputting it to DVD. Currently, I am exporting my project directly from the timeline of FCP into compressor using the 90 minutes best quality 16:9. This gives my a 2pass VBR at 6.4mbps.
On a tube tv, it looks so-so, but it appears as though almost as if the lines are out of resigster. It reminds me of reading a newspaper where the print is off register. Definitely you can see interlacing around people and the text looks off register.
In DVD format on my LCD flat panel it looks really good (the best it can look).
On my 60" Sony SXRD new tv at home it looks really bad (granted I'm using a Playstation 2 to show it, and on the flat panel I'm using a DVD player with upconversion capabilities - maybe that's the solution right there....)
Currently I'm not adjusting the presets in Compressor.
Given all the variables above, is there anything that anyone can suggest that will give me better results? I don't want to import the footage in SD because then I'm editing SD and can never output the finished project as HDV when Blu-ray or HD-DVD comes out.
I would really appreciate some other workarounds that people have used to try and make their HDV footage look as best as possible in DVD format.
The frustrating thing is that you never know what TV your clients are watching your project on. Is there a standard set up that I could suggest they buy/use to get the best results?
P.S. When watching my project on the 60" SXRD I'm not only using a Playstation 2, but also it is connected through an S-Video cable. On the LCD flat panel, I'm using the up-converting DVD player and an HDMI to HDMI cord....Does the cord/way of connecting really make that much of a difference? How do I make it still look good for people that want to watch it letterboxed on a tube tv?

It's not the upconverting as much as the limitations of S-Video connections. And for true upconverting, you need to utilize the HDMI connection, which will produce better results over component, and qualitatively better over S Video.
As to client complaints as to image quality, my analog of the weakest link still holds. I always show my clients what it looks like on a good DVD player with at least component in to progressive conversion.
If their set up produces less, you simply identify what part of their set up is suspect.
Good quality blanks. Solid encode rates, and Dolby 2/ac3 audio.
Again, it has to be good going in
take care,
and I would appreciate it if you could award points.
It helps us all out.
david
BTW, go to http://www.lyric.com/video/losgatos/index.htm and look at the web samples of Los Gatos Then and Now, or buy the DVD.
Produce on a FX1.
best wishes
David

  • Still trying to get unconfused about drives

    Coming from the Mac world and using a MBP and external storage, all this talk of drives, raids, etc. is making my head spin!
    I know that I will be backing up extensively and can handle the downtime/risk of losing a days data (I'm compulsive about syncing my work on backups as I make progress), so I'm probably going to be avoiding raid since I will likely have 4 drives to start with.
    I'm going to have 1 x Crucial M4 256gb SSD for OS/Programs and most likely (3x) seagate barracuda xt 2tb drives in addition.
    So my first question is, should I be looking at also getting a small SSD for media cache/page files, or am I fine putting this onto a regular harddrive? If I do the latter, should the harddrive have a partition for the page files/cache to help with speed? How big are these files typically? Should I reserve the entire 2tb drive for them?
    I've read through the disk guide, but being a newb to a lot of this I'm still trying to get my head around it.
    So far I think I want:
    1. SSD for os/programs
    2. Drive for page files/media cache (what else goes on here?)
    3. Drive for media/input
    4. Drive for export
    Which drive should my project files go on again?
    Any help clarifying this is much appreciated! When everybody starts taking the math of throughput my head begins spinning still. I'm starting to gain a tiny bit of understanding, but I'm trying to still keep it really simple for myself right now, as I'm building my first workstation and this is only one of many technical concerns I'm currently wrapping my head around!

    should the harddrive have a partition for the page files/cache to help with speed?
    Partitions do not help speed. On the contrary, it reduces speed but increases wear and tear. Compare it to a large loft you have to store your stuff. You can easily walk around your loft and get the stuff you need. That is comparable to a non-partitioned disk. Now imagine that same loft, but partioned into two or more parts with a wall and a door to separate the parts. You have stuff stacked against the wall you need, so you get it, but instead of getting the other stuff you need just  1 foot behind it, you have to walk 12 feet over to the door, open it, walk 12 feet to the other stuff you need, return 12 feet to the door, close it and then go about your thing.  You have just walked 36 feet, where without those partitions 1 foot would have sufficed. Not very efficient, right? Same with partitioning your disk.
    The basic thought on where to put what, is to distribute disk accesses across as many disks as you have. If you have a workflow where you export only a few times, or once when finished, then put your projects and exports together. Remember that SATA is half duplex, so you can only read at one time and write at another time. You can't do both at the same time. When exporting the project is already loaded, the media need to be read and written to the export disk.

  • SCCM 2012 - Deleted advertisement still trying to get installed on servers

    During 2012 upgrade I managed to deploy the SP1 Cumulative update 4 - server update - package to a group of servers that don't have the configuration manager installed.
    I deleted that deployment from the server group but the package is still trying to get installed multiple times a day leaving a random folder on D: (Example: D:\25234HDF344D6H72K)
    Please advise on how I can sort this out, the volume is filling up with new directories

    To clarify and verify, did you deploy the package or the software update?
    Either way, Garth's point is valid.

  • Help, still trying to get the basics of Java

    OK, I'm still trying to figure out the basics and on this program decided to write small amounts of code at a time and compile them so I could learn where I was making the mistakes. I keep getting stuck I am getting 5 cannot find symbols on the following code. I've made sure I have imported the Scanner class, checked my brackets, but can't figure out why it is still giving these errors. Can you please help? Why will it not recognize "input"?
    import java.util.Scanner;
    public class Inventory
         public static void main( String args[] )
         String productNum = "";
         String name = "";
         int units = 0;
         double amount = 0;
         Scanner scan = new Scanner( System.in );
         System.out.println ( "Please enter product #" );
         productNum = input.next();
         System.out.println ( "Please enter color name" );
         name = input.next();
         System.out.println ( "Please enter units on hand" );
         units = input.nextInt();
         System.out.println ( "Please enter dollar amount for each unit" );
         amount = input.nextDouble();
         System.out.println (productNum, name, units, amount);
    }

    Doesn't it not mean that your AlbumInventory class does not define a constructor that takes zero arguments?
    e.g
    public class AlbumInventory {
         public static void main(String [] args) {
             AlbumInventory brokenInventory  = new AlbumInventory(); // This will produce compile error
             AlbumInventory workingInventory = new AlbumInventory(5098) // This will compile
         private int id;
         public AlbumInventory (int id) {
              this.id = id;
    }

  • Still trying to get to the NetStream Object

    Hi, I am trying to get to the NetStream object so that I can listen to the NetStatusEvents. Unfortunately the code listed on:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/2725207
    no longer works. Is there another way? Thanks.

    It can be frustrating, especially when the workflow is so different from what we are used to with video. The idea behind the structure is to let OSMF manage the stream and expose needed events on the MediaPlayer. It definitely is a different way of doing things, but most events you need can be gotten from there.
    That being said, somethings require the NetStream object. You can extend the VideoElement, which is passed a NetLoader in its constructor. You can get the NetStream off the loader, though it is a good idea to check if it is there, since loader can be one of many classes that may not have the netStream property.:
    if( elementLoader.hasOwnProperty( 'netStream' ) )
      var netStream:NetStream = elementLoader[ 'netStream' ];
    Of course, if you're using a MediaFactory, you may need to customize it to use your custom VideoElement.
    Hope that helps.

  • Still trying to get on the network

    when pluging in the cable on a sprc staion5 do u use
    le0 or qfe0?le0 is at the bottom of the box and qfe0
    thru 4 is at the bottom..
    i still get link down cable problem on le0 and startting up dhcp on primary interface le0 no response.. iam useing this box as a stand alone for practice..can someone help me to get connected?
    also iam plugging into a d-link router and comcast cable
    i tried to use a crossover cable but that dont seem to work eather..my laptop at home gets the dns from esbrnw01.nj.comcast.net with no problem but for some resson i cant get the dns on my sparc5..

    Hi,
    According to comcast, dns should not be configured !
    http://faq.comcast.net/faq/answer.jsp?name=17638&cat=Connection&subcategory=1
    Also, Obtain An IP Address Automatically indicates DHCP is used !
    I have asked you before to control settings for your DHCP server, but as this DHCP Server is controlled by a third party, you can't control these settings.
    btw: did they provide you one lease or can you have multiple leases ? If you got only one lease, you can only have one machine at a time connected to comcast.
    ==
    le0:
    May I suggest to open box and check card for physical damage or if it is properly seated.
    Also, if you have a spare disk, remove qfe and reinstall solaris (or solaris 10) on spare disk (only),
    while le0 is directly connected to laptop using null modem cable.
    NB: prior to this give your laptop a fixed IP or alternate IP Address.
    (this way you isolate le0 issue from other issues)
    NB: If you give your XP laptop IP Address 192.168.0.1 and set Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) it might give DHCP lease to other machines (but I'm not sure it will !)
    Please feedback, what you can do and what results you got.
    Good luck,
    Eric

    First of all, it is important to remember that "sometimes, things happen" to computers, and that a problem that you are experiencing may be a unique set of circumstances, and not necessarily a defect in the software.
    1. Is your printer driver up-to-date? If you create another printer queue for a Generic PostScript Printer, does the problem still occur?
    2. Create a brand new user account and test the problem there. If printing works, then the cause of the problem is something inside your original user account, like a preference file or a cache. Use a utility like Onyx to clear cache files and test removing any preference files in <user>/LibraryPreferences that seem relevant to printing. Remove the preference to the Desktop. If the problem persists, replace the preference file. If it goes away, trash it. Note that you may need to restart after removing a pref file.
    3. Reset the Printing System. In System Preferences > Print & Fax, right click on the list of printers. There will be a menu command "Reset Printing System". Note that this will delete all your print queues, and you will need to add them again.
    4. Is there a crash with every document? Try changing some of the print menu options. Any reason that you are printing as an image? Try not doing that.
    5. There doesn't seem to be anything reported in the crash logs, but do you have any third-party software that runs at startup, or in the background? Very often these things can interfere with many processes.

  • Still can't get good, crisp, video upload and export

    I have read the HD express manual, read the articles by Ken Stone and my video uploads are still not that crisp. When I export the MOV to my desktop it looks perfect, every detail. My original video is crytsal clear, beautiful, but when I upload it to "My Space" it looks a bit fuzzy or flat. Now I know what you're going to say, "it's MY SPACE, but you know what, it's not. There are plenty of very clear and crisp videos from musicians and music videos on MY SPACE that are clear as day and crisp - so I don't agree it's MY SPACE. My Space allows for .MOV/Quicktime uploads - 100MB. I tried H.264, still looks flat and washed out. I tried Sorenson, still looks flat. What's confusing me is the frame rate and key frame rate I should set it at for a simple 320 x 240 upload and all the other detailed settings that are optional. What are my best option, step by step. I have exhuasted myself with this - up until 2 a.m. for 4 days. Please help. I have tried so many options. Thank you for your time. Sheila

    Sheila,
    What is the source of the original video (original capture from DV camera, Quicktime video, rip from DVD ...)? What settings are you using when you export to your Desktop as a MOV? When you say it's crystal clear, what are you watching it on? Is the MOV file what you are uploading to MySpace, or are you doing a different export for uploading; if so, what settings are you using for that export?
    What versions of FCE and QT do you have installed on your Mac? And what are the model & specs of your Mac?

  • STILL trying to get Oracle to work on linux -- HELP!!

    Hi all-- a dumb newbie problem if I may:
    I have Oracle 8.0.5 installed now on Linux (RH5.2).. As per the
    install instructions, I created a file /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbora
    containing the following:
    # Set ORA_HOME to be equivalent to the ORACLE_HOME
    # from which you wish to execute dbstart and
    # dbshut
    # set ORA_OWNER to the user id of the owner of the
    # Oracle database in ORA_HOME
    ORA_HOME=/home/oracle/8.0.5.0.0
    ORA_OWNER=oracle
    if [! -f $ORA_HOME/bin/dbstart -o ! -d $ORA_HOME]
    then
    echo "Oracle startup: cannot start"
    exit
    fi
    case "$1" in
    'start')
    # Start the Oracle databases:
    su - $ORA_OWNER -c $ORA_HOME/bin/dbstart &
    'stop')
    # Stop the Oracle databases:
    su - $ORA_OWNER -c $ORA_HOME/bin/dbshut &
    esac
    In the instructions, it then says:
    5) Link dbora by entering:
    # ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbora /etc/rc0.d/K10dbora
    # ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbora /etc/rc2.d/S99dbora
    .. this is where I am assuming it is set so that this dbora gets
    executed on system boot.. correct?
    Anyway, it doesn't work. First of all, I am logged in as root.
    Second of all, I am assuming the # signs in there are a mistake
    since they are comments in the bash shell. Third of all, if I
    just try:
    ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbora /etc/rc0.d/K10dbora
    It returns an error saying:
    ln: cannot create symbolic link `/etc/rc0.d/K10dbora' to
    '/etc/rc.d/init.d/dbora': No such file or directory
    So, I tried a 'ls /etc/rc*' and I got:
    init.d rc.local rc.sysinit rc1.d rc3.d rc5.d
    rc rc.news rc0.d rc2.d rc4.d rc6.d
    ... so, rc0.d IS there... so, THEN I tried: ls /etc/rc0.d and
    got:
    ls: /etc/rc0.d: No such file or directory
    huh?? why won't this work? does it or doesn't it exist?
    Thanks for any help.

    A very obnoxious feature of ls in many UNIXes is that
    'ls foo*' will show you the contents of the
    subdirectory that matches foo* without reminding you that
    the file names you are seeing displayed are NOT in your
    current directory but, rather, in some subdirectory whose
    name happens to begin with foo (you have NO IDEA, precisely,
    WHICH directory contents you are seeing.)
    For example, in RedHat 5.2, do the following:
    cd /etc
    ls pp*
    What you will (probabably) see displayed APPEARS to be a
    list of files in /etc:
    chap-secrets ip-down ip-up options pap-secrets
    What, IN FACT, you are seeing are files in /etc/ppp.
    One way to avoid this confusion is to use the -d option to ls.
    'ls -dl pp*' will display one line, showing you the existence
    of the directory ppp within /etc, rather than its contents.
    As an exercise, also try doing: ls -dF /etc/p*
    And, don't forget to thourougly read: man ls
    Continuing to the specific problem at hand...

    The problem here is [email protected] thinking that ls /etc/rc*
    was showing him files in /etc. This was not the case. Rather,
    ls /etc/rc* was showing him a list of file names in /etc/rc.d
    and rc0.d in in /etc/rc.d, not in /etc.
    This further implies that the Oracle instructions (as quoted by
    [email protected]) are incorrect. Instead of:
    ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbora /etc/rc0.d/K10dbora
    On should instead do:
    ln -s /etc/rc.d/init.d/dbora /etc/rc.d/rc0.d/K10dbora
    (and similarly for other startups)
    (at least this is how the file system on my RedHat 5.2 is
    structured -- your milage may vary -- another somewhat
    annoying issue with the different UNIXes -- but they all
    still make NT amd its registry nonsense look silly)

  • Is anyone still trying to get a USB 551L to connect?

    I have had this device for a year and it disconnects constantly for me and my coworker (who has same device). I have tried everything mentioned on the website- power changes, updates, checking for driver conflicts, LAN settings. Still doesn't work. Contant dropping. I have errors in my Windows Event Log so it seems that the device is not compatible with Windows - (Windows 8, coworker is running 7). This is maddening and I can't believe Verizon still sells this product.

    When working with USB modems its important to check (as-ses is an illegal word apparently?) the USB connector to see if it is somehow defective.  Open up your device manager and keep an eye on the Network Adapters area.  If you suffer from another disconnection that is related to the USB connector your USB modem will drop from the list and the device manager will refresh.  That means that either the USB port on your laptop is bad or more likely the USB on the modem itself is bad and needs replacement.
    This is a common issue with USB modems and a big reason why we migrated over to Jetpacks.  Now we only have to replace Jetpacks whenever someone gets overzealous with the charging cable which is much less of a concern.
    If the USB connector appears to be fine and its connection to the PC remains solid then that would mean that there is either a service problem in your area or the USB modem has some other kind of defect that causes it to drop its connection to the local towers.  In that case you would still have to contact VZW and have them explain your options.  You cant do much about a service problem without investing in boosters and antenna kits.  Issues with bad USB modems need to be coordinated with VZW support for replacement or repair work.

  • Still trying to get the free PS CS6 upgrade

    I purchased a full version of PS CS5 Extended version about a month ago from GovConnection.  At purchase time, I was told that the purchase qualified me for a free upgrade for the CS6 version when it started shipping. I went to the Adobe site, registered the product and filled out the online form to see if I qualified.  I received an email message a few days later saying that I had qualified and that I should not contact Adobe again until they emailed me about how to redeem the upgrade.  I waited what I thought was a reasonable time (May 25th came and went) and tried to chat with a representative to see where my email redemption was. The representative said that they were going to open a case for me and that I should be hearing back in 1 or 2 days.  More time went by and still no response.  I re-contacted Adobe using the case number that I was given.  I received what looked like a boiler plate response with "Dear XXXXX" in the header and addressing me as "Susan" (I had signed my note with my name which is "Jim").  Long story short, I'm still without my upgrade, the trial version of PS CS6 that I downloaded is about to expire and I still don't have a CS6 serial # or product that I'm entitled to have.  What do I have to do to get Adobe to take some action on this?  Every representative that I've chatted with has had to escalate the issue to another tier and has not been able to resolve it.
    Thanks,
    -Jim

    1 month later...still no answers from Verizon on when my bill will be fixed, or even how much it should be on a monthly basis...I thought I was making progress through the forum, but before my issue was resolved they changed the status to resolved now nobody will answer...again... Just when I thought giving Verizon another chance to make their screw up right was a good idea...must not have been.... Comcast...here...I...come...

  • Still trying to get more space on my hard drive, how to move final cut?

    Is it possible to just move final cut pro, all the videos and everything inside, to my external hard drive? My macbook pro 2012 hard drive is getting full and I think its because of all the HD video clips... I am trying to store them on my external, but not sure of the best way. Move all the events or just move the application as a whole?

    It depends whether you imported with Copy Files to Final Cut Events Folder in your Import Preferences. If you did then moving the contents of Events and Projects should do the trick. One way you can check is simply move a project/event out of the Movies folder and relaunch with your external drive.
    If the projects load without any issues or offline media then you can safely delete the copy on your system drive. And yes you'd need to have the external drive attached to use any Events or Projects stored there. FCPX will still launch if the drive isn't attached- it will just not load those contents. Projects and Events will default back to the system drive.

  • STILL Trying to get 802.11n!

    Well, when I chatted with Sales, they said their FIoS modems support 802.11n.  On the phone, sales could not tell me the same thing.  Phone tech support said my Actiontec MI424WR already supports "N wireless" but there is not a single setting that allows this, even after a firmware upgrade.  I figured sales and tech support are flat out LYING to me.  Tech support chat says I have to join Verizon's Beta program.  This might come as a shock to Verzion, but 802.11n has been out for a litle while now... (notes from July of 2010 said Verzion was claiming "soon.")
    Other feedback tried to suggest that 11g is just as fast; show to be a lie when I used a Netgear N-to-N hardware bridge and experienced a dramatic increase in throughput.  Unfortunatly I cannot connect all of my devices, which are N capabile, so I'm stuck with Verizon's years-old technology.
    When will Verzion stop treating 802.11n for wireless and let us upgrade?  When will Verzion stop lying?

    Follow on: Text from the 9 July 2011 Verizon Tech Support Chat session:
    Mohd: We have Verizon FIOS G router and it is the latest in G router technology.
    WW Gordon: I'm glad to hear that the g router is the latest in "g" technology. Too bad this is years old technology. It's like being proud of having the fastest donkey cart.
    Mohd: Mr.Gordon, there is good news for all your FIOS customers, you can opt for the N router by registering yourself, for the latest products provided by Verizon FIOS.
    Mohd: Verizon FIOS is still working on providing the N router to all our customers, it is still in its testing face, we are providing Beta Version of N routers to the customers.
