Still Won't Start Up Mac OS X

I did the Quicktime update that came out a few days ago... When I restarted, everything went okay until the "Mac OS X" screen. It went about a half a centimeter on the progress bar in the "Mac OS X" window and then the window disappeared and I was faced by a blue screen. I tried restarting repeatedly. Same thing every time. The "Mac Os X" window disappears. The screen changes to a lighter shade of blue after a few seconds. Every few seconds, a progress wheel like the one under the apple when you first start up the computer appears, makes half a revolution, and vanishes. I have run Techtool Deluxe, Disk Utility off of the install disk (a volume had to be repaired, but as far as I can tell repairing it didn't help at all), Mac OS X Boot Utility, reset the Pram, and booted in Safe Mode as well. Mac OS X Boot Utility said that I had a memory error--the error code was "post/0/2048". Is there anything else I can do? I don't want to have to send my laptop in to Apple.
Someone said something about a "Setup Assistant" in a reply to my earlier post, what is that? Would it help?
Also, I was just wondering if any of you knew how to get a disc out of the SuperDrive outside of the actual OS?
And one more thing: I think the sound file OS X is supposed to play when it starts up is corrupted. Sometimes it doesn't play at all, and when it does it sounds like the speakers are blown out. How do I fix this?
Man, I have a lot of stuff wrong with this my computer.

Hi-
There is a known memory slot problem in certain Powerbooks. See this article.
If you can reseat the memory module, it might work long enough for you to get your disc out, test your startup, etc.

my 2002 iMac G4 went down during a power out. won't restart. tried PMU button. still won't start. fan tries for 2 sec, but nothing

Sometimes, a replacement 1/2AA 3.6v Lithium PRAM battery is needed
to get these back into running form again, because these are one-way
and without a good battery, settings are lost or easily corrupted. And this
can contribute to a failure on startup. But that is a troubleshooting measure.
There could be another issue, although these batteries are only good for a
few years at best. A power outage can revoke any remainder of life out of it.
The take-apart is tedious and detail oriented; to include new thermal paste
and some special tools, good instructions, and some skills also help. An
ifixit.com repair guide may help; as would an original Apple Service guide.
Not sure if other good online guides or youtube video are available.
If the power supply is bad, the test ports near the PMU button are where
to check; with multi-meter. Also power supplies may develop issues with
bad capacitors. They have been said to be repairable.
Here's an older site with a take-apart from some time ago.
    http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/imac_g4/imacg4_takeapart.html
This also would be a good time to consider, if battery is all that's failed, to
upgrade the internal RAM chip, or upgrade the hard disk drive, etc.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Oovoo won't start on Mac

    Hi,
I've got a 13" Macbook Pro. I had installed oovoo on it and it was working perfectly. But once I updated my MacBook to from Mac OS X 10.6.5 to 10.6.6, it won't start anymore. When I click on it, it goes into the dock, but suddenly it closes itself.
Does anybody know how I can get it running again?

Well, I just checked their website and that application hasn't been updated for some time; it still mentions "PowerPCs" in their system requirements.
So, just because something worked in 10.6.5, there may have been some improvements in the OS that your oovoo version can not support. You might want to try one fix I found on their website: They say their app does not support running in 64 bit mode. Highlight Safari in the Applications Folder and hit Command + I - check the "32 bit mode". Close window and restart Safari.
Other than that, you will need to contact their support.

  • Win7 install dvd won't start on mac mini

I'm trying to install windows 7 on my mid 2007 mac mini (running snow leopard) in a bootcamp partition. I created the bootcamp partition (32GB) using bootcamp assistant (no problem there) and inserted the installation dvd, but once the mini reboots to start the installer I just get a black screen (symptoms very similar to those with the late 2006 iMac).
I tried using both the 64 and 32bit version but no difference there.
The win7 install DVD (bought, not downloaded) seems ok as installation as a virtual machine using vmware works.
I'ld really much prefer running windows in a bootcamp partition than through virtualization, so any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

If it won't start past the screen with the Apple logo in the center, there's something very badly wrong with your system. Try starting in safe mode (hold down the shift key at startup, starting when you hear the startup chime and letting go when you see the Apple logo). If it starts up fine then (keeping in mind it will take longer than normal to start up in this mode, so be patient), but the problem returns when you reboot normally, you have some incompatible third-party software installed. What that might be is hard to say.
If safe mode doesn't work either, your system is probably badly corrupt. Try reinstalling. Hold down command-R at startup to enter recovery mode. Once you do that, go to Disk Utility and repair the hard drive. If problems are nonexistent or fixed, quit Disk Utility and then reinstall the system. (This will simply replace the existing system files, and should leave all your other stuff alone.) If problems cannot be fixed, report back for more instructions.

  • Ati Radeon 9800 Pro won't start up mac!

I just got this Ati Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB AGP from ebay and installed it promptly but my mac just won't start up!
I tried placing back my existing nvidia card and it booted up fine. Am i being ripped off with a PC version or something? I noticed there's a extra piece of chip to insert from my old nvdia card but not the new ati one.
But i checked on the net and found that the ati radeon 9800 mac cards also do not have that extra chip.
    Here's a URL of the card i bought. (http://i4.ebayimg.com/01/i/000/da/aa/1988_1.JPG)
Any idea or advice guys? Thanks in advance.

    Hi-
The image is just a stock image from ATI, of a 9800 Pro- which one is impossible to tell.
Since you are calling the card a 256mb version, the card is a PC card (unless it,s blue). It was advertised as a Mac card? If so, it has been flashed. BUT, if it is an 8x AGP card, it needs pins #3 and #11 taped to work in your 4x AGP QS. See this article.
Do you have the eBay link to the card that you bought (the listing)?

  • After Effects CS5 Won't Start on Mac OSX 10.6.3

Production Premium arrived yesterday, and having tried all the software, After Effects is the only one that won't start.
I'm pretty sure my computer meets the spec needed.
I have Intel Core 2 Duo processor, at 2.66 GHz, with 4GB of RAM and loads of hard drive space. Premier Pro works fine, it's just After Effects.
    Help!

I am having similar problems to those described above. I have Master Collection CS5.5 on a Mac running OS 10.6.8. The full suite had been running fine until late October, at which point After Effects stopped loading on launch. Illustrator and Photoshop start and run without problems, but After Effects will/would not launch. It hangs while loading MediaCore. When I launch in safe mode, I get an error with the Verdana font, so I've addressed that problem as suggested above (see my notes below). I successfully launched After Effects one time last week before uninstalling the Master Collection and taking all the steps outlined below, but the software has since refused to launch at all. I have not made any major system changes in the past two months. The most recent change I've made that might be relevant is the installation of FinalCut Pro, but the two packages have coexisted without incident since summer. I regularly use VLC, Quicktime Pro 10 and Quicktime Pro 7, but I have not made any changes to these recently.
Here are the steps I have taken:
    delete user preferences
    remove VLC and Quicktime
run software updates on Mac OS; my last update was a Java patch in late October; roughly coincides with when my troubles began. There are no ATI/Radeon patches available for Mac OS 10.6 that I can find, and I believe that the system's "Software Updates" provides such updates
completely uninstall and reinstall Master Collection and install software updates using "Updates" within Photoshop (have done this sequence three times)
    remove font list ("AdobeFnt11.1.lst" and "AdobeFnt11.lst") in /Library/Applicatio support/Adobe/PDFL/9.0/fonts
use Appzapper to remove After Effects before reinstalling it
boot in safe mode and launch either from .app file or from Package Contents/MacOS/ terminal executable
remove MediaCore components completely by placing them on the desktop
Please help. I can not afford to lose production time on this machine.

  • Urgent!!! 5.0.1 Still Won't Start

I upgraded from iTunes 4.9 to 5.0.1, and like many others in the group, it simply won't start. I do have digidesign software, but I did all the latest upgrades. I followed the instructions for the reinstall, but had to use the following variations. My original OSX disc got left behind in the other side of the country when I moved, so I used disk warrior to repair the HD instead. Does that do the same thing? Or do I need the original OSX disc? Also when repairing permissions, the the following permissions never got fixed:
Permissions differ on ./usr/share/man/man1/less.1, should be -rw-r--r-- , they are -r--r--r--
Owner and group corrected on ./usr/share/man/man1/less.1
    Permissions corrected on ./usr/share/man/man1/less.1
Permissions differ on ./usr/share/man/man1/more.1, should be -r--r--r-- , they are -rw-r--r--
Owner and group corrected on ./usr/share/man/man1/more.1
    Permissions corrected on ./usr/share/man/man1/more.1
2005-09-26 22:39:48 -0400 - The privileges have been repaired on the selected volume.
Even though it says they have been repaired, each time I run disk utility, this still comes up. Could these permission errors be causing iTunes to not start?
Most people in this forum seem to be running panther or tiger. I'm still on jaguar. Does this make a difference?
I really need my iTunes library back soon! I'm need to put together music for a show that I am doing tomorrow!! Any help would be much appreciated.

Sorry, I can't tell you specifically since I don't run any Digi software (I'm going on what Digi and others have said re. conflicts with iTunes). Try searching this forum for "digidesign" or "protools" and you should come across other threads on the subject.
One other thing that can cause iTunes not to launch, particularly in the presence of the Digi drivers, is if any third-party iTunes plugins are installed. Removing any third party iTunes plugins from the iTunes plug-ins folder may resolve the issue. The plug-ins folder is located at:
    MacHD>Users>your account>Library>iTunes>iTunes Plug-ins
    Hope this helps.

  • IMac won't start in mac. Will only start in Windows, option key won't work to allow me to get to mac side. downloaded avast last week. Worried this could be the problem??

iMac was making a strange sound yesterday. I shutdown and restarted now it will only boot in windows vista.  I've tried option key that doesn't work, I've tried command R no luck.  I've left un-plugged, not sure what to do. I don't even get the white screen like it's trying to load, it goes directly to windows vista, once in windows I can't get anywhere to try and go back.  I did download avast the other week, it seemed to be running fine until yesterday. UGH

If you are running OS X "Lion" or later, boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. For Snow Leopard, start your Mac while holding the c key with its original OS X Install DVD inserted in its optical drive.
At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
If you manage to boot OS X, uninstall Avast. Its effect on a Mac has progressed from complete and utter worthlessness to maliciousness.
Be sure to use its latest uninstaller, which will remove it completely.

  • My iPod won't charge and start, t happened when i came home from camp. it puts the apple sign but it just stays there i tried lots of cords and still won't start, whats going on

If you are stuck on the Apple log you may need to restore.
    Before you do, try this
Hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until the screen goes dark and the Apple logo appears
    If that doesn't help, restore:

  • I have a late 2011 mac mini.  When I power it on, it won't start up.  The wheel just spins and spins.  I tried Safe Mode, and it still won't start up.  I bought the computer new a month ago.  It came with Lion installed.  Ideas?

I press the power button and the chime sounds.  The screen goes gray and the wheel begins to spin.  This just continues.  It won't finish starting up.  I have tried to start up in Safe Mode with the same result.  It doesn't recognize my external dvd drive, so I can't test the Hard Drive with drive genius or disk warrior.  I'm at a loss what to do.  I don't want to dive to Ann Arbor (30 miles) and have the geniuses look at me funny for not knowing the simple solution....assuming there is one.

Disconnect your HD and any other devices (iPhone, iPad, iPod, etc...) and boot up into the Startup Manager holding the Option key.
Startup Manager: How to select a startup volume
Now try selecting the Macintosh HD, then if nothing happens go to the Lion Recovery Disk and follow the instructions for Repairing or Restoring Lion from your Backup.

Try deleting your iTunes preference files (com.apple.itunesxxx.plist, in your user's Library -> Preference folder) and see if that helps.
    Hope it does.

  • Can't open any program of CS6 on windows 7. The windows of the program open and close right after. I allready uninstal et re-instal all de CS6 but it's useless, CS6 still won't start.

Of course, I'm register. I used CCleaner for the uninstalation. I try to start with the "control-Alt-shift" key pressed, also unsuccesfull... The most strange is that before Chistmas hollyday, everythinks was working fine. When I came back, on january, it wasn't.

Allright, I uninstall CS6, clean my computer with "Adobe Cleaner" et re-install.Now It's working !
