Stills Resolution - Photo Browser vs. Importing into Event

All,
I am preparing a slideshow with photos of varying size.  I manage my photos in Aperture and usually use the photo browser in Final Cut Pro X to access them. Some of the photos are low-res (0.1 MB 286 x 369 pixels, for example).  If I bring the example photo into my project via the photo browser, the resolution is cut in half (143 x 184).  If I import the photo into the Event Browser and add it to the slideshow the original resolution is preserved.  Its obviously an easier workflow to use the photo browser but many of the photos I am working with are of poor quality to begin with so I don't want to have to first export from Aperture then import into FCPX.  Does anyone know why I am seeing this behavior?
Thanks very much,
Peter

You're probably transcoding to Proxy.
This halves the size of the imported media.
Andy
That's what I thought at first, but that is not what I see in my machine.
I set the playback to proxy media, and in the Proxy Media folder I get an alias to the original file (sitting in the Original Media folder, naturally), so even using proxy does not halve the dimensions of the still image.

  • Unable to view photo browser to import photos

    Friends,
I'm running FCPX 10.1.  I am unable to easily view the photo browser to import photos.  The screenshot below shows what I see when I click on the photo import pane:
The screenshot below shows what I see when I click on the under photos to display the entire photo (Aperture) library:
    How can I fix this?
    Thanks!
    Steve

I also had the same problem. Then I open iMovie, clicked on the iPhoto and Aperture section. When I got back to FCP X my photos, Gearage Band sections were back. But the photo section must be selected before you quit FCP X. Then open open FCP X, and the photos en Garage Band and other audio effects will be back. But when you select another section like themes or transitions before you quit FCP X, the photo section wil be gone again and had to start the procedure again to get it back. That is my experience of the missing photos and audio effects.

    Many thanks Jaz Eilles

Sounds like you have a folder with an album named fred inside of it.  Folders can only hold other folders, albums, slideshows, etc. but not just photos.  So you must be sure to drop the photo directly onto the album titled fred that resides inside that folder otherwise it will create a new album.
So expand the folder so the fred album is visible and drop the new photo onto the album.

  • Where can I find my photos I've imported into iPhoto in Finder

Can anyone tell me where to find the physical location of my pictures that I've imported into iPhoto?

I've backed up my MacBook with Time Machine because I've just purchased a new MacBook Air. Since I have less hard drive space I wanted to transfer only some of the pictures.
    Be very careful now.
Time Machine is a rolling back up. It's not an archive. If you restore only part of the Library then eventually the remainder of the Library will be deleted.
To do what you want you'll need an external Hard Drive not used for Time Machine.
Here's one way to do what you want:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using  iPhoto Library Manager
As to the location of the Photos:
By default, your photos are stored in the  iPhoto Library in your Pictures Folder.
Since iPhoto 7 (iLife 08) the old iPhoto Library Folder is a Package File. This is simply a folder that +looks+ like a file in the Finder. The change was made to the format of the iPhoto library because many users were inadvertently corrupting their library by browsing through it with other software or making changes in it themselves.
Want to look inside?  Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
Standard Warning:  Don't change anything in the iPhoto Library Folder via the Finder or any other application. iPhoto depends on the structure as well as the contents of this folder. Moving things, renaming things,, deleting them or otherwise making changes will prevent iPhoto from working and could even cause you to damage or lose your photos.
    FYI:
There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

  • Renaming clips that have already been imported into Event Library...

    Hello all,
Would anyone know how to change the filenames of clips that after they've been imported into my iMovie Event Library?
To keep track of my clips, I changed all the video filenames BEFORE importing them, so in Finder, they look like this:
    clip_0001.mov
    clip_0002.mov
    clip_0003.mov
    etc...
A few dozen videos that I imported a while back have different names, and I'd like to change them to the easier numerical filenames above.
Problem is...I've already created projects using those clips, and simply changing the filenames in Finder would break those Projects. And I'm unsure if I'd have to reimport the files after I change their names.
    Please help! Thanks!

As long as the default iPhoto Preference to "copy imported items to the iPhoto library" is checked you can delete photos once they are imported and tested within iPhoto
You, of course, still need regular backups to avoid loss due to hardware/software/human failure - I use time machine and a daily clone plus other periodic backups

  • HT204655 My photos won't import into Word for Mac after OS X upgrade

After upgrading to the new OS X Yosemite does anyone know how to import photos into Word or Excel for Mac? That library is now grayed out for me and I am in mid-project on Word. I used to be able to copy and paste right into my document, now it seems I must exclusively work within the Photos program.

I actually found that the issue started for me after the MS Office update last week. It was originally working fine with the new Photos for Mac App until the MS Office update. Now Word can't find the photo browser, it only shows Photo Booth. I also can't drag drop photos from the Mac App into Word, like I used to be able to. At the moment I export the photos to a directory then I can input from file in Word. That works, but it's a bit untidy.
I'm thinking off trying the Office 2016 for Mac, which are available now as demos. Unfortunately Microsoft don't reply to questions that are raised, so I'm not sure what the underlying issue is with photo's not working.

  • Certain photos won't import into catalog...

When I attempted to import about 650 photos from an 8GB CF card, the last 100 photos failed to import. I received a catalog error and LR was forced to restart. However, even after the catalog was fixed and I resumed the importing process, the same 100-photo segment failed to import without a catalog error.
I then decided to create a new catalog and import the photos here (while copying the RAWs to my computer). This worked. I tested the new catalog for integrity and usability, and it was fine. However, when I tried to merge the new catalog with my main catalog, I received the same catalog error.
I'm not sure what the issue it. I'm guessing that it might have something to do with an issue with copying the RAWs to directory in my main catalog, but I'm not sure. This still makes no sense to me. At the moment, I'm working on those 100 photos separately with no problems, but would really like to incorporate them into my main catalog for archival purposes.

Is your catalog 2GB and on a FAT32 volume, where 2GB is the maximum file-size?
Can you import anything else into this catalog, such as JPGs or other new test RAWs?

  • IPhone sometimes won't delete all the photos after I import into iPhoto

Every so often, my iPhone 3GS won't delete some photos after importing into iPhoto and choosing "delete originals." It deletes most of the originals but strangely keeps a certain number around. My basic routine is to "Import All" and then "Delete Originals." This works 98% of the time, but sometimes the iPhone just gets hung up and won't delete the originals until I manually do it from the iPhone itself.

I was looking further into this and I found out that on my Macbook Pro's System Preferences. In the iCloud settings, the "Photos" setting was checked and in the Options next to that, the "My Photo Stream" and "Photo Sharing" was also checked.
I think this was the main problem. After I used iTunes to sync with the photos maybe there was some cache settings or something residual left on the iPhone which let to it being continuously restoring.
This is the fix which I used. It is fine now.
Check in System Preferences for - iCloud >> Photos is unchecked.
Check in System Preferences for - iCloud >> Photos >> Options >> "My Photo Stream" and "Photo Sharing" is unchecked.
Temporarily delete account for iCloud settings on iOS device - Settings >> iCloud (This didn't affect my main iCloud account only deleted my information on the device)
    Re-sync iOS device with iTunes.
Set up your iCloud account on iOS device again.
Hope this helps for anyone having this problem.

  • Certain photos won't import into iPhoto?

Today I tried to import all of my photos from the past few months into iPhoto from my iPhone 5s. But what I discovered is that all of my pictures from February 21st until May 9th won't import or won't appear in my iPhoto library, but they are obviously still on my phone. All of my pictures from May 9th until now imported, but it's just within that specific time frame that none of those pictures will import and I have absolutely no idea why. I tried rebooting my computer and phone, force quitting iPhoto, selecting only the photos that won't import and trying to import those individually, but nothing is working. Please help, I'm really upset and frustrated.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • How do I remove all of the photos that have been imported and start over. The photo did not import into folders by date

When I imported the photos, I thought I had it set to import them into folders but it didn't happen. I have one file of 10000+ photos in the same folder. I would likede to start over, remove what has been imported (not delete) and start over importing them into folder that I choose rather than all in one.

    Okay - but after that..
I followed the instruction in the tutorial and did the following:
    Click Import (Existing Files)
Select source - (pictures appear in grid)
    include sub-folders if appropriate
    Select “add”
File Handling - Changed build preview to standard
Apply During Import - Nothing added
    Add keywords - Added keywords
Import (Tutorial says to click “Import” but import is greyed out and not available)
What am I missing? The destination information does not appear. I tried selecting that before I clicked "Import" but that didn't help..

  • Iphoto imported into events out of order

I did not state the problem very well the first time.  My pictures I just imported, showed up at the bottom with the correct dates when I viewed them as "photos" under Library on the left; but when I choose to view Events; they show up with among other events from 2010 or 2009.  WHY?   This has happened with several imports in the last 2 weeks.  All dates of photos are correct, but Iphoto places them among events created 2 or 3 years ago.

  • Where is the Apple Photos library to import into LR6 - it's seemingly vanished...

On my Mac, in import sources on LR6, there is no Photos option to select.  I had Aperture, then imported this library into Photos a few week back.  Hated Photos and now wish to use LR6.  But no Photos library to be found to import...Any ideas?

Lightroom doesn't currently support importing from Apple Photos library. Therefore, the only way I know to get to the files in the Photos Library is to do so manually.
First you'll need to select the Apple 'Photo Library' in your 'Pictures' folder then right click to open the context menu. On context menu you'll see an item named 'Show Packages Contents'. Click on this to open the Photos Library. In the Photos Library you'll find a 10 or so folders, one of which should be named 'Masters'. Copy this folder to the Pictures folder folder. This is where it can get messy. Apple stores your files in dozens, if not hundreds, of Hex numerically named folders. If you want all of the photos to be in their correctly named album etc then your out of luck. The best you can do is import the contents of this copy of the Masters folder into Lightroom using normal import procedure (make sure 'Include Subfolders' is checked in top left corner of import window). You can rename the Apple folders from Lightroom Folder panel.

  • How can favorites from a premium msn browser be imported into firefox?

We have been using qwest.msn.com, a premium msn browser for email. We need to move to firefox. We do not know how to import "favorites" in to the firefox bookmarks.

Sorry, Firefox doesn't have a way to import a "session" from another brand browser. And I don't see a way to export that data from Opera, either.

  • IMovie - import into events by date?

    Hi gang,
iMovie used to have an option that would automatically create a new event for each new date that clips were filmed.  This was helpful when importing video that was filmed over long time periods spanning multiple events.  I can't find the option for doing this in the new iMovie.  Is there a way to replicate this old iMovie functionality in the new iMovie?
    Cheers!
