Stock AMD cooler

I would like to know if Stock AMD cooler (that comes with Box'ed CPU) is enough to overclocking CPU a bit. What about temperatres using that stock heatsink???

What are you trying to achieve w/ OC'ing?  A lot of it depends on how far you want to OC and what your existing system is capable of.
IMHO the stock retail HSF is actually quite good if used with high quality thermal compound (ie. Arctic Silver).  However, you'll need to keep in mind the overall air circulation in your case.  Best bet is to take incremental steps with your existing system and monitor the temperatures (be advised of the inaccurate temperature readings with the current BIOS).
In my particular situation, I didn't notice too much of a difference going from the stock retail HSF to the Zalman CNP7000A-Cu, but there are a lot of folks who have benchmark numbers posted in this forum that can show significant benefits.  Again, YMMV.
IMHO cooler is better, and the expense of the aftermarket cooling option was worth the peace of mind.  Besides, it LOOKS cooler!
Good luck!

  • Replacement fan for stock amd heatsink

hey to all, Anybody know of a good high cfm fan(dont care about noise) to replace a stock amd 60mm fan. also maybe what the stock fan cfm is? this is for another pc of mine.  I found a all alum.evercool (  http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?Submit=ENE&N=2010110062+70002727+70001969&Subcategory=62&description=&srchInDesc=&minPrice=&maxPrice=  ) its 23 cfm and am thinking maybe the extra metal might help out that stock heatsink. anybody have any ideas. thanks for the time       Henry

HELLO, to all  Well If your as cheap as I its worth a 7c drop by changing the fan on a stock amd 64 cooler. Thats almost as good as my zalman 7000b-cu cooler. I tried two different fans, a 60mm evercool rated at 25cfm, and a Tt 60cfm 80mm case blower fan (epoxied to stock plastic fan frame) the 60mm fan lower temps by about 4c at full 12v, the Tt blower got 7c lower on about half speed, ya its noisey on full but cant really hear it over any other fans on half, Then I took the stock amd fan and mounted it in the right side of my case behind the cpu & board blowing in and it dropped my mb temp by 2c, dosent stick out very much either being that it is so thin. used screen for a grill.  Total cost $22.00, now idle at36c loaded 48c

  • Best AMD cooler

    Hey ppl
Quick questions. Which AMD cooler is the best??
My friend needs to get a new cooler for her 2400XP as it idle at like 55C. Bit too high dont u agree?
I was thinking of the Coolermaster Aero7+ cos I thought that was good. Could you guy pls post which cooler you think its the best without is being a lot of money. Around the same price as the Aero7+ pls.
    Cheers guys

    Hey Guys.
Thanks for the help I rekon I am gonna go for the Aero7+ (the all copper one)
One thing tho.... My friends brother has now got a PC that I am building him out of spare bits. But I have a Athlon Xp 2000+ and with its current cooler which is like a hoover it seems to idle at 65
So If my friend puts the her Aero 7+ on her 2400+   then would it be alright if I used to stock 2400+ AMD cooler on the 2000+ with artic silver as the thermal paste. Do you think this would produce better results then 65C idle that the current cooler is getting?
    Give some advice here
    Thanks

  • AMD cool n quiet

Can I get some BIOS with AMD Cool n Quiet option enabled?
I get irritate when my A8 5550m cant get higher than 2.1GHz when the CPU can handle even 3.1GHz. I can fix this with restarting only, and it get back to 2.1GHz when I power on my laptop
    G405s-7577 users. Thanks.
nb. Sorry for my bad english

64 bit I hope. Go into the device manager and look for the processor. Right click on the processor and choose properties then driver, then driver details. It should say amd processor rather than generic processor. The driver name should have amd in it (amdk8.sys) and not just processor.sys or something generic. For mobile processors the correct name is PowerNow! not Cool 'n Quiet although I cannot recall if the zv5000z actually uses a mobile processor or a desktop processor. I believe it is mobile.

  • Crackling Issues with AMD Cool'n'Quiet and Intel SpeedS

After enabling AMD Cool'n'Quiet on my Vista 64 computer ([url="http://forums.creative.com/creativelabs/board/message?board.id=Vista&message.id=2093">see this thread[/url]), I noticed that I had crackling in my audio from my Creative X-Fi. I put my Minimum Processor State back to 00%, and the crackling is gone. With both Minimum and Maximum Processor State on 00%, I have no crackling issues. I haven't tested Intel SpeedStep, but I would imagine that will also cause this problem. Can anyone verify this?Message Edited by dypsis on 03-25-200706:32 PM

I am running MSI K8N Neo Platinum/SLI 64FX? with 4gbram?I have never really used the cool n quiet utility becasue it always seemed to make the motherboard fans whine somewhat, for this purpose I enabled and disabled cool n quiet several times, and I honestly didnt hear any difference in sound, albeit the fan whinning was there. I dont know if this is conected or not, its possible cool N quiet creates other noise as well. I never did like the util. But, it might stand to reason that if the utility was creating voltage or signal variations it could cause the rice krispies syndrome so many people have been talking about. Have to get some more feedback on this issue.

I was wondering why that is, recently because summer, I have enabled AMD Cool'n'Quiet option, when I switch it on, the X-Fi (Elite Pro) begins to crackle. I turn it off, it becomes flawless once again.
    I'm on nForce 4 chipset (A8N32-SLI)

  • Better?? Stock chipset cooler or Vantec IceBerg on Neo 2 Plat

In your experience as I am hoping not to have to remove my mobo to try this and find out my stock msi chipset cooler cools better than my vantec iceberg.
What do you ppl think is a better cooler??

Yeah I know it will fit and is just marginally larger.  I test fitted it when I first got the mobo from newegg.  And its not like its alot of trouble getting the mobo out of the case.  I am just lazy.  All I do all day long is work on other ppls computers.  I kinda like just coming home and having a computer that works.  But lately my computer room has been getting warmer and if I restart my computer I will get bsod's in x64 v1433 with error "Page fault in non paged area"  And I go into bios and the chipset temp is 42'C  To me that is just way to hot.  I have pleny of cooling inside the case and ie; 6 80mm fans and a Arctic Cooling freezer 64 on the 3200+.  But I am wondering if maybe it is due to memory overheating.
I did just take my memory down from 2.85v to 2.55 and it works just fine.  So maybe that is my trick.
Also I did remove the stock hs and put some as5 under it and that lowered my temps by about 2'C

    Its the same as powernow-k8.
Dont understand whats wrong with this:
Yes the CnQ is enabled in BIOS, and YES, ACPI is also enabled (also tryed disabling it).

  • AMD Cool and Quiet Driver

    Just added in MSI
The link is for the Kn8 NEO2 but is good for any mombo
     Link  http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?UID=607&kind=1

    - 98/ME/2K 1.0.1.7
    • Windows XP 64-Bit Edition or Windows Server 2003 64-Bit Edition

It appears that this was added to MSI today.  I had already installed the AMD 64 driver 1.2.2.0 (even though it appears as 1.2.2.1 at AMD) over a week ago, but C'n'Q never worked with it with my 3200+ Venice chip.
I did get C'n'Q to work with both 1.9b5 and 1.9b6 beta BIOS's but went back to 1.8 (official) for my peace of mind.  Is this driver different to the one at AMD?  Modified in anyway?
I would really like to get C'n'Q to work with approved drivers and not betas.

  • AMD Cool n Quiet support? [SOLVED]

How do I set this up? What do I need to enable or install?
    Thanks in advance.

Hmmkay. So here's what worked :
    Edited /etc/conf.d/cpufreq to:
    #configuration for cpufreq control
    # valid governors:
    # ondemand, performance, powersave,
    # conservative, userspace
    governor="ondemand"
    # valid suffixes: Hz, kHz (default), MHz, GHz, THz
    # PREVIOUSLY, MIN FREQ WAS 2.25GHZ AND MAX 3GHZ
    min_freq="1.0GHz"
    max_freq="2.3GHz"
I have powernowd and cpufreq in my DAEMONS array.
I'll try disabling those two from the array and see if it still works, as I'm interesting in getting it to work from within the kernel.
    Btw, it's an X2 4400+ on an Abit Fatal1ty AN9 board.
    Thanks tam1138!

  • P4 vs AMD

    Hi
    Sorry for my english
I need to change my Barton 2600 system ( temperature problem, loudly cooler ).
    What mobo and cooler is better for Pentium 4 2,8E 1MB L2 ? MS-7008 or MS-6728.
    thks in advance
    Mike
PS. I don`t need to overclock my system. I need stable chipset and less bothering system.

i don't think you need a cooler, you might just need to re-apply your cooler    um... take cooler off, put cooler back on...
you have to make sure you use thermal compound correctly...
because you shouldn't have temperatures that high with a heat sink and fan the size of yours... maybe you need more case fans?   a stock AMD cooler should keep your CPU at 55C full speed maybe 45 or a bit higher idle
prescotts run hotter than bartons (maybe not yours, but in general) and the 1 megabyte of cache isn't really effective at clock speeds lower than about 3.5ghz.
if you must go p4, go northwood, get an 865 or 875 for stability...
PT880 is a cheaper board, and isn't too bad, but i'd imagine a intel chipset board would be more stable.
    also... what does
    "AMD 2600Barton ( 2300 )"
    the 2300 mean?

  • Thermalright xp-120, Zalman ZM80D-HP and msi k8n neo?

Does anyone have this config? Does anybody know if it fits? My gpu fan is noisy .. :(

    Hi
Not sure about the Thermalrights, but I know that the following do not fit together on my K8N Neo Platinum:
    Zalman 7000CU
    Zalman ZM80C
Both fit fine individually, but the CPU socket is too close to the AGP port for both to fit.
So I stuck with the stock AMD cooler with cool n quiet and the Zalman ZM80C.
Anybody else got a good recommendation for a good silent cooler that is not too fat or allows the fan to be mounted vertically on the opposite side of the AGP slot??

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum / Phenom II 940BE overvolting and buzzing at load

I have seen many posts related to this issue, but have found no solution.  The only thread which seemed to be going somewhere went off topic and was closed before anything could be resolved
My Phenom II 940BE, at load, is constantly being overvolted between 1.37-.38 and 1.40v.  In the BIOS, after a fresh CMOS reset, I see the processor is set to 1.80v in the cell menu.  This is a false reading, though, since the hardware monitor still has it between the aforementioned 1.37-.38 and 1.40v.  Regardless, the lowest setting I have available with the CPU voltage setting in the Cell Menu is 1.375v then AUTO.
I have tried using many BIOS images with freshly cleared CMOS (remove battery, power cables from motherboard, wait a few minutes etc.): 3.4 3.5 and a MSI tech provided 3.6B1 BIOS all produce the same behavior.
When my CPU is at load, a light buzzing sound can be heard from the CPU area of the motherboard.  This is especially noticeable when cool n quiet is enabled and the system decides to go from 800MHz to 3GHz, the buzzing is for the duration of the up-clocking until clocked back to 800MHz.  I had the same issue on Vista x64 as well as Win 7.  After some time at 3GHz the buzzing seems to go away, but may be drowned out by a fan or two.
Has anyone found some sort of resolve for this issue?
    System Specs:
    K9N2 SLI Platinum
    Phenom II 940BE stock
    Stock AMD cooler
8 gig of OCZ DDR-II 800 RAM (OCZ2N800SR2G) at stock
    BFG GeForce 9800GT 1gig stock
    Windows 7 X64 RTM
    EDIMAX Wireless card 802.11n
Enermax Liberty Power Supply 500W (link)
    2x Samsung Ecogreen 500gig in RAID0
    Pioneer DVD-RW (SATA)
    Onboard sound

Problem 1: solved.  The metal curly thing by the RAM was buzzing.  Unfortunately I do not have a hot glue gun and pressing on it with an eraser from a pencil did not alleviate buzzing, so removing 2 sticks of ram did it.  I had 4x 2gb sticks.  Taking out 2 stopped almost all of the buzzing sound, but sadly now I am running with only 4 gig of ram vs my mighty 8
Problem 2 still remains, the mystery of my CPU being at 1.38 - 1.40V instead of 1.350 when set to AUTO in the BIOS.

I would just push the FSB up till it starts to give problems and then back off a little and stop. If not unlock it and go for 200Mhz FSB and see where you can get to without adjusting the power.
There are quite a few articles on overclocking the 2500+ on the net and well worth the read to see what Voltage they are using.

  • K9N2 SLI Platinum with Xigmatek Dark Knight S1283V Mounted - w/ Pictures

((I've updated my Temperature results in MY FIFTH POST DOWN; so please refer to the results in that post before jumping to conclusions!))
    So.
I had some Credit available at a local Micro Center after returning a couple items to there that didn't work.
I decided to apply this credit to a new Cooler for my Phenom II 940 BE; and I settled on a Xigmatek Dark Knight S1283V.  It is basically the same thing as Xigmatek's HDT-S1283; just with black nickle over its aluminum fins and copper heat pipes.  Read a lot of reviews that seemed to put Xigamtek's HDT model Coolers "on par" with both the TRue120 and OCZ Vendetta.  I settled on the Black Knight primarily because I didn't want one that was all shiny and flashy; and this one supported the "snap on" lever set up of the AM2+ socket; rather then having to removemy Mob and bolting it on.
Got it mounted; though it didn't quite mount the way I had wanted it to; was hoping to have vertical, it so the fan blew through it and out the back of the case, via the case fan on the back.  But it mounts horizontal the AM2 Socket.  So the Fan is flat and blowing downwards.
    Anyway.
I am thus far not as impressed as I had hoped.  It does not seem any better then my Stock Cooler; with my Phenom II 940BE on stock settings at 3.0ghz..
    Idle temps around 44c.
Running Prime95 and it immediately jumped to 55c as soon as the "Torture Test" started, and gradually rose to 64c where its been holding there.  I get the same results from my Stock Cooler.
This, is with Arctic Silver 5 applied to the base of the block as opposed to the thermal compound that came included with it.
Anyway, here are some pictures of it mounted on my K9N2 SLI Platinum.
Dark Knights Fan is blowing air DOWNwards.
Case Fan immediately to the left of the Dark Knight here, is blowing air out the back of the case.
The Case fan just above that, is blowing air into the case, as my HDD used to be there but no longer is.
The Case fan at the roof, of the case, is also blowing air into the case.
There is a large 120mm fan on the front of the case which is not shown, that is also blowing air into the case.
Left side of the Dark Knight; just barely touches the CIRCU PIPE Heat sink.
Right Side of the Dark Knight, just barely covers DIMM Slot 1.  It pushed my Ram to the side by a couple Milimeters, so I moved them into Dimms slots 3-4.
Perhaps, the rest of my Fans need to be adjusted to work best with this; I am not sure.
But I expected to see at least a difference of 5 - 10 degrees celsius when compared with my stock cooler.  I was, hoping to use this thing to push my chip into a higher Overclock.  As it is, with my stock cooler, I can not overclock much higher then 3.4ghz.  But if this Xigmatek is preforming about the same as my stock cooler, then I am afraid it just won't do for a suitable cooler for overclocking...

The Stock vCore for the chip is 1.350v.
I was able to go as high as 3.5gz with that.  When I pushed to 3.6ghz, I had to push the vCore up to 1.375v.
At 3.7ghz, I had to push the vCore up to 1.4v.. and am now running at 1.450v for 3.8ghz.
This particular chip is claimed to be able to push 4.0ghz at 1.5v; though most people haven't been able to achieve this without Liquid Cooling.  Infact, AMD set a Worlds Record with this chip, pushing it to 6.5ghz under Liquid Nitrogen... They did the same with the PhenomII x3 720BE.
Also; I was using the Stock Cooler on mine at 3.5ghz and was getting similar Temps to what you're getting.   The Stock AMD cooler can't take that chip much pasted the 3.5/3.6 marks, depending on Chip, as bare in mind, not every chip of the same model is the same.  Your 940BE may run differently from mine...
You're also using a different motherboard; so your Heat Pipes layout and configuration is different from mine; nt sure if this would have much effect on your CPU heat, don't think it should.... But it looks like your Mobo has more room to mount that V1 in a vertical position, with the fan blowing out the rear.  Coolers like mine, can't mount that way.
I honestly believe though, if Xigmatek were able to supply their S1283 series coolers with a mounting bracket that would allow it to mount vertically like that, then it would dramatically improve its performance.
At present, mine is blowing air up, from the Video Cards, through the Cooler, and up towards the fans at the top which pulls it out the case.   My video Cards are pushing 70c under load so I'm already pulling hot air.   I also have two Thermaltake iCage's now, with 120mm Fans on the front, blowing air out the back.   One of those is blowing air directly over the Cooler, and out the rear case fan.... which is why I think if I were able to mount a cooler in a vertical position, the CPU would probably run even cooler.
