Stock iBook G4 RAM: soldered on?

I noticed at Crucial's iBook G4 (14.1") page that it can support up to 1536 MB of RAM, and since it only has one available (and difficult to get to, heh) RAM slot, I took it to mean the stock 512 MB of RAM is soldered on the board. Is that correct? Thanks.

Yes, the stock 512MB is soldered to the board. Even if you could remove and replace the chip, I don't think the firmware would recognize anything bigger than 512 in that slot.

  • Macbook Pro RAM use VS. iBook 4 RAM use

    Hi everybody,
This is kind of disappointing to me. I just bought a new Macbook Pro 13" with a 2.26Ghz intel core duo processor and 2GB of RAM memory, with the hope to have twice as much space to have more applications open at the same time than on my old iBook; however, when I opened Activity Monitor I could see that first off, the System Memory window says that .25GB are already being used (by the video card, according to what I´ve read here), but most disappointing of all is that opening just as many applications as I used to on my iBook, the RAM is being fully used, even though I've got 2GB!
Also I can tell that Wired processes are using much more space on the MacBook Pro than on the iBook resulting in a decrease in memory right from the start!
Does anybody have answers for this?
    Thanks so much guys!

    Hi alexfa,
You'll find http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/Performance/Conceptual/Mana gingMemory/Articles/AboutMemory.html provides a useful summary of Mac memory usage, including information about the relationship between some aspects of application design, RAM size and "wired" memory use.
You may find http://episteme.arstechnica.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8300945231/m/412007272041 useful, too.

  • I replaced my iBook's RAM (256MB) with a 512MB, and it wont start up now!

Hello! I just replaced my existing 256MB RAM with a 512MB of RAM. When I started up my iBook, all that came up was a flashing OS 9 looking folder to the same folder with a question mark on it. What does that mean? Do I have to reflash the P-RAM or something (whatever that means)? I never attempted to replace laptop ram before, so I do not know if I did something wrong, or if I just don't have the right kind of memory. Could someone help me? Thanks!
Just for the record, I think im running OS 10.4.9. Thanks!!!!!

Have you removed the RAM and reseated it? Here is the link to the Apple Knowledge Base article that tells you how to do it:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=111918
If reseating it doesn't help, it could be that the RAM is defective. (This happened twice with RAM I ordered. It was defective from the very start, and the vendor replaced it for me.) Try starting up with the 512 MB module removed and see it it starts up that way.
Please let us know how things go.

  • Ibook g4 ram addition

i just bought adobe cs 2 and to run two applications at once it runs really slow. I called adobe and they told me that if I get more ram it will speed up my system so they will run correctly. I know that i need the 2700 ram to add to my computer and i found it for about $70 on macsales. my question is to install is all i need to do is take off the keyboard and install it into the slot underneth. i would appriciate it if someone could help me with my installation of this product. also if i do this myself will it void my AppleCare warrenty.

RAM is a user replaceable part, so you will not void your warranty if you put more RAM in. Your looking for PC2700 RAM (no rpm attached). The instructions for replacing RAM are located right below your keyboard. Just push the tabs on the keyboard and lift it gently towards you, resting it on the trackpad. The rest is also easy. Just follow the instructions right on your iBook from there.

  • 2100+(stock) and 400mhz ram?

I'm running a 2100+ in stock form and will be getting Mushkin Black Hi-Performance L2 PC3200 dual ram in on monday and was thinking about the performance of my machine.  Would it be better to do 1:1 ratio or just SPD?  If I do SPD wouldn't my ram be at 400 mhz but then my ratio is gonna be 1:4? isn't that bad or at least inefficient?  I was wondering if I can run 400 and not lose performance since it seems from other threads that not running 1:1 can actually make you lose performance.   ?(

i haven't read that..but in any case..here's the link that's been making it's way around and around:

  • G40-70 RAM soldered?

I recently purchased the Lenovo G40-70 Laptop - 59427087, and I am loving it. I would like to upgrade my RAM to 8GB sometime in the future. This model came with 6GB of RAM in it and I was wondering if any of my RAM modules were soldered into the slot in this particular model?
    Thanks

The memory is socketed.  If you currently have 6 GBs installed there should be a 2 GB and a 4 GB module in the slots.  Upgrading to 8 GBs will be a simple swap of the 2 GB module.
Page #40 of your model's Hardware Maintenance Manual will explain how to remove and install the memory modules.  The link below is for your model's Hardware Maintenance Manual. When working inside your system please follow all precautions and recommendations that are noted in the manual.

I would like to know if the flex 2 14 has a soldered RAM or not.  4 gigs of ram wont be enough for me.

It is unclear to me if you actually have to remove the keyboard. I think you will be able to access the RAM, if you remove the bottom plate. Removing the keyboard may be very tricky if you have no experience. But shouldn't be too hard.

  • My P75-A7200 laptop with bad ram - Is the ram soldered to the motherboard???

    Hello,
I have a quesiton about my laptop and issues I've been having.
It has been blue screening a lot over  the past month or so and when I took it back to the store where I bought it for service, I was told that there was nothing that they could do to it since the ram was soldered to the mainboard and that it would have to be sent back to the factory for repair.
I'm just trying to find out more about my laptop and hopefully avoid a costly repair if possible. I thought my laptop had 4 dimm slots, if so, where do I find the slots and can I replace the ram???
Is it really soldered to the main board???
    Thanks for any help.

the link but it doesn't talk about the 2 dimm slots under the keyboard that I was reading about earlier today.
You must not have looked at the video! It's out of focus, but you can see that the RAM is replaceable and inserted in slots.
That video is for a Satellite P75-A7200. As you can plainly see, the RAM is not under the keyboard.
Even the spec says there are four slots!.
    Memory
     Configured with 8GB DDR3L 1600MHz (max 32GB)
 4 main memory slots. Two slots are occupied.

  • Upgraded my G4 iBook's RAM, now Airport is weak

Just yesterday I installed 1GB of RAM in my 14" iBook G4 (1.33GHz). The RAM's working great, but immediately on restart my Airport signal has been very very weak. But not gone - I can still see my network, but it's too weak to connect to anything.
Could I have done something to the antenna during install?

Compare the antenna wire connection with the photos in KB 108039, Properly attaching the antenna on an AirPort Extreme Card.

  • How do I tell if iBook G4 RAM is working?

Just got a iBook 1.33 GHz from a friend. System Profiler says it has 768 MB installed but under Diagnostics/Power On Self-Test is says:
    Failed
    Failure Type: Memory
    Memory slot: DIMM1/J7
And under Memory it says the DIMM1/J7 status is OK. What is going on?

Download and use memtest at http://www.memtest.org/
    It works.

  • Soldering additional RAM to ibook G4 possible?

    Hello,
is it possible to soder additonal RAM to an ibook G4. The ibook 12" 1,2GHZ 2004 model logic board has RAM soldered on the bottom side, but not on the to side, but the later 1,33GHZ mid 2005 has. So I was wondering, if one could solder chips on this.
    Look at this picture http://d3nevzfk7ii3be.cloudfront.net/igi/jUPecNjJcjbcsWXB.medium
Yes, I know, I can add 1GB as a module in the slot, but that makes 1,25GB RAM and this way it would get 1,5GB (just like the later ibook).
There is someone in the archive who had this idea, but he did not report back. https://discussions.apple.com/message/11102805?searchText=Soldering%20additional %20RAM%20to%20ibook#11102805
I got an ibook from Ebay that was said to be defective, but it isn't, it is just a lose cable. I got it for 22,-EUR, so not much money would be burned, on the other hand, selling it working might get me 60,-EUR, so actually that would be 60,-EUR lost.
Hm, I actually wanted it for parts for my ibook 1,33GHz, but the ebay description was wrong and it turned out to be the 1,2GHz model as described above and that for example has a different Airport card.
What am I gonna do, I don't know:
    1. tinker
    2. upgrade the combo drive with a spare Dual Layer Drive, I got for 2,30EUR (had the luck of getting plenty of tham for that per piece price), to create additional value
    3. sell parts seperately

Ah, I suspected a possible firmware restricton.
If it does not work, is it re-doable?
    I meant the 12" 1,2GHz
On my mid-2005 1,33GHz one. I allready upgraded to a 320GB IDE drive years ago and I got a mSATA SSD with IDE adapter at hand, which I maybe use here (on the other hand it is an expensive part and it would be better suited in another application PowerMac, or so). Allthough I do not expect very much speed increase (despite OS loading).
I also have a problem with the sleep function, which I do not know, where it comes from. (instead of sleep, ibook goes dead and can only be resurected by disconnecting battery and powerchord). So maybe the metter idea wwould be leaving it and buy another 1,33GHz model and put the SSD in there (as well as the DVD-DL drive).
I was pointed to that the capacitor holding the PRAM info may be bad and I should replace that, someone else said it could be the DC-in-Board and a third person said, it should be something I could come by, by watching what kext prevents it from going to sleep (looking at the log) and the corresponding kext's hardware would then be the cause, but I did not get any information out of the log, only that some more things were reported as problematic. (OS reinstall, wipe and install, did not help).
PS: I guess also the RAM chips on the other side would have to match, I can't use some that are 128MB together, just to test it, right?

  • How much ram can i put in my ibook dual USB G3?

I am not sure if it has one or two slots available. Is there some ram soldered to the logic board? I am using this laptop almost exclusively for iphoto and just want it to be as fast as it can be.
    Thanks
    Tim

Depending on which model you have, there is either 64MB or 128MB soldered to the logic board. There is one expansion slot. The largest RAM you can get is 512MB, which will give you either 576MB or 640MB.
You can check the amount of RAM you have by going to System Profiler and selecting memory. That will show you what you've got.
You need either PC 100 or PC 133 144 pin So-Dimm RAM. Make sure it is Apple compatible.

  • Maximum installable ram for ibook g4 800mhz?

i get conflicting answers...can i install 1g of ram into this thing?

According to this link in the iBook G4 developer note, the iBook G4 800 MHz has a single RAM slot that can accept a 512 MB SO-DIMM for a total RAM of 640 MB.
Crucial.com and 18004Memory.com seem to agree that 640 MB is the maximum memory for that iBook.
The information in KB 302333, iBook memory (RAM) guide is confusing. I would be willing to bet that the writer of that article made a mistake.
However... if you want to experiment, you could purchase a 1 GB module and try it out. Trying it shouldn't hurt the RAM or the iBook. The iBook either will or won't recognize the additional RAM. If you do try this, please report back with the results.

  • Just bought an iBook G3

I just picked up an iBook G3 off of ebay today, and I don't have super high expections. Earlier this summer I bought a Macbook, which I love. I wanted to get an inexpensive backup that I can tote to school every day and abuse. For $200 I thought why not? I was considering getting an Asus EEE 701 when it came out, but now it is delayed until October, so I looked for an iBook G3, and I found one with a 500mhz cpu, a tiny 10gb hdd, and 384mb of ram. I plan on running schoolhouse, neooffice, and Safari.
Any issues I should be aware of? Was this a wise move? Have any of you found better deals than this? I am just using this thing to take notes in class, and sync with my network at home.

    +Any issues I should be aware of?+
The iBook G3 (Dual USB) is somewhat prone to logic board failure. The failure is more common in later models (the program was started for the 800 MHz models and was expanded to include them all), however, it would be wise to handle it with a bit of care, taking care never to pick it up by the left front corner alone. If you're picking it up in your left hand, grab it in the center under the trackpad instead of by the left corner.
    +Was this a wise move?+
It depends. Were the original software CD's included in your purchase? Has the OS been upgraded? If so, to what version of the OS and are the upgrade discs included? You are going to need some software discs for maintenance, and your MacBook discs won't do since it has an Intel processor, while the iBook has a Power PC processor.
That 10 GB hard drive is a real OS X killer. I have kept my 500 MHz iBook in OS 9 because that small hard drive really isn't up to running OS X, in my opinion. When the 500 MHz iBook came out, OS 9 was the default OS on it.
The 500 MHz iBook came with four options on the optical drive: CD-ROM (only reads CD's), CD-RW (reads and writes CD's), DVD-ROM (reads CD's and DVD's), or a Combo drive (reads CD's and DVD's; writes CD's). The CD-ROM version has 64 MB of RAM soldered to the logic board; the other models have 128 MB of RAM soldered to the logic board. The fact that the one you've purchased has 128 MB of RAM (384 - 256 = 128) says that the optical drive is something other than the mere CD-ROM. The RAM can be maximized to 640 MB by removing the 256 MB module in the one available RAM slot and replacing it with a 512 MB 3.3 V, PC100 or PC133 compliant, 1.25 inch SDRAM SO-DIMM.

Only time will tell if this has been a wise purchase for you. I bought two 500 MHz iBooks through eBay almost five years ago, and they are still chugging along, although they now sit idle a good deal of the time, since I've bought an 800 MHz G3 iBook and a 1.2 GHz iBook G4 since that time (also on eBay).
If you're going to want to use it with the battery, you may need a battery replacement, too. The typical lifespan of a lithium-ion battery is two to three years. An iBook G4 battery works in the 500 MHz iBook G3, too (but the color of the battery is a little bit different).
As long as you're not expecting it to measure up to the MacBook, you may be satisfied. Keep in mind that it is six years old.
    Good luck with it.

  • IBook OS Install problems

I am preparing to sell my iBook G3 600 to move up to one of the new G4's.
I deauthorized the computer for iTMS, and then erased the HD a few times. I had upgraded to OS 10.3 and wanted to reinstall the 10.1 that came with it. It just won't take. It either freezes at the happy Mac start up screen. That happy Mac, staring at me with its smug smirk. Sorry. Other times it will freeze just before it gets to the Agreement. If it gets to the install, it just says that there were problems with the install and to try again.
It only has the stock 128 MB RAM, nothing 3rd party at all. Now that I have erased the drive, software restore doesn't do anything for me.
I ran the Apple Hardware test and everything was fine. Maybe my Combo drive is failing? I just don't know.
I do have a FW HD if I could use that in any way to get an OS loaded onto this guy.
    Any thoughts or ideas?

Hi Jeff, Okay lets get this straight---you can boot up using your backup HD--Now your Backup is your primary drive.....
You could try to re-format the disk.
While booted from the backup go to disk utility and choose the iBook's volume and select erase choose the mac extended format
and os 9 drivers(if offered) click erase.
Insert the install disk into the drive and
Restart your computer holding the "option" key after you hear the chime and release it when the blue screen appears.
wait for the computer to finish looking for all bootable drives and select the install disk..then the arrow on the right side. If the disk does not show up hit the arrow on the left to recycle it--if it still doesn't show there may be a prob w/ the disk
from the install you should be able to pick the volume---Your iBook and install---good luck, glynn
