Stolen Apple device - Serial Number Issue

I have recently lost my iPod touch device through property theft. I had iCloud on and "find my iphone" as well. I have found that no apple device can track without the help of cellular of wifi, however though using the device I can track my movements on mapping apps without actually being connected to any particular wifi or cellular network. This form of tracking does NOT work over iCloud functions, so there is no way for me to track my iPod touch. I have been told by Police to obtain my serial number which is registered to my apple account. What concerns me is that according to other posts people can hook my iPod touch up to another computer and iTunes, wipe it clean and re-register so they can use it themselves. Now I remember that when using older Microsoft programs I had to enter a serial number and register it online to use the program, and if all "uses" had been used I could not register and use that program. Similar I should assume applies to apple with its sophisticated policies, that a stolen device has to be registered before syncing with another computer by way of serial number and that I should get an email to say that somebody is trying to re-register my device on another computer. The same prompt system used for apple password changes. My main issue is that the iPod touch is forever registered to me unless I remove it, but does Apple allow a thief to register the same device, the same serial number twice? If that were so, there are laws in most countrys that would classify this as an accessory to a criminal act, allowing and encouraging a black market of stolen apple goods. Apple puts up a front with its "find my iphone" app, but doesn't the world agree that serial number tracking of registrations should play a part. I can give my serial number to the Police, but only apple will know if somebody has tried to register my device a second time. In short, can my iPod touch be wiped? (it is locked). Does apple have a policy indemnifying them of criminal black market activities? Can apple notify me if somebody tries to re-register my property? Can apple block re-registration attempts?

gail from maine, you said
"You said: What concerns me is that according to other posts people can hook my iPod touch up to another computer and iTunes, wipe it clean and re-register so they can use it themselves.
"What I said was - no they cannot. Period. It is a brick to them.
"So, your statement: All I have queried is if somebody COULD wipe the device and re-register it, then apple makes it easy to use a stolen device.
"Is invalid, because someone CANNOT wipe the device if you have your device signed onto iCloud and you have the Find My iPhone application enabled. Since they cannot wipe it, they cannot use it. Apple has made it virtually impossible to use a stolen device."
The OP said theyhave "iPod touch, iOS 6.1.6". That means they have a 4G. Theus, all onne has to do is place the iPod in recovery mode and restore via iTunes. Then they can use/sell the working iPod.
iOS 7 introduced the Acivation Lock
iCloud: Find My iPhone Activation Lock in iOS 7
Which, while allowing restoring the device with recovery mode, does not allow use of the iPod unless the Apple ID andf Password of the previous owner is entered. Of the iPods, only the 5G iPod can go to iOS 7

  • Apple should make something where you can enter your apple devices serial number and find where it is so that when its lost or stolen it can be retrieved easily, the only negative i can think of is people can be injured. Then again thers always lawyers

My i pod touch was stolen about a week ago. Ive been looking for ways to find it and its been pretty hopless. I have owned 7 i pods in the last 5 years and they have all been stolen, I guess you could say im pretty unresponsiblle but I prefer to call it unfortunate. There should be some type of website where you can just type the serial # of your i pod and it could use google maps or something the track it down. I mean what age are we in, I'm sure if cars can drive them selves there should be no problem to construct an i pod traking app. I dont thing lawsuits are a good excuse either. America has the best justice system in the world and i dont think they be to agaist my idea. And if media were on our sides then CNN would on it like whie on rice. there word is very persuasive to people all over the world and everyone watches it. i know I'm just venting but something needs to be done to end the madness! I dont wana buy another I pod. i wana buy accessories for my i pod.

Apple provides the Find My feature through iCloud for those that want to take advantage of it.  But to go further would most likely create invasion of privacy issues and raise legal concerns for Apple.  Only police have the statory authority to track and that requires court orders.  This comes up repeatedly when users loose objects, but Apple continues to say they do not track or attempt to find the lost objects.

Sorry if my English isn't correct because of I'm Italian.
You must switch on the lost mode on the app " Find my iPhone ".
If you can see it on the map of this app, you will know where is your iPhone in that moment.
REMEMBER: you can see your iPhone on the map of  " Find my iPhone"  only if it is online. Indeed you can't see your iPhone if it's offlined or switched of.

  • HT1349 APPLE CARE SERIAL NUMBER NOT VALID

Alright so I know this is elsewhere in the forum but I recently purchased AppleCare for my iPhone 4 (I live in Canada) and I went to register the product and it's telling me the serial number is not valid.
I tried calling Apple but I keep getting in this enraging speak your problem loop that doesn't seem to pick up "AppleCare" as an item that I'm having issues with. What am I supposed to be saying to the prompter to get me to a service representative. It wants the serial number for my iPhone. That's not the issue, it's my APPLECARE that has the wrong serial number.
I have zero patience for teleprompts so I'd like someone to walk me through how to get to a REAL human being.
I just want to register my product that I paid 90 bucks for. And have it actually work. I'm not asking much
Any help would very much be appreciated!!!!

Thanks, I ended up using the "EXPRESS LANE", which I definitely recommend to anyone that dislikes speaking to a computer as much as I do.
    https://expresslane.apple.com/
Also, to anyone else that may be having this issue: The serial number you're inputting is for your PHONE, not the one on the applecare box.
If any apple people are reading this, the form should read "DEVICE serial number", not everyone knows what hardware means (though in hindsight that makes sense but why not call it what it is and save potential client frustration, and save yourself a phone call). Or even make a drop-down list to select the device you're registering would be helpful. Then have the registration applet show "AppleCare Registration #" and "[device name: e.g. iPhone] serial #".

  • 2 issues - Invalid Serial Number issue & Lightroom 5 Trial vs full version folder hierarchy question

    Hello
not sure if I should split these two questions...
1 - Invalid Serial Number issue
I'm helping out a friend with their large photo collection and they bought Lightroom 5 and received the serial number but when we add this to Lightroom it states that it's invalid - I tried leaving it until the following week (I visit them weekly) and it still refusing the number - when I went into their Adobe account and took a look at downloads the option to download the full version is greyed out (or an x - I'm not sat on their computer right now so can't double check) but it wouldn't allow me to do anything so we just had the trial version.
anyone know what the issue is - shall I get them to contact Adobe to get them to take a look - I also had issues trying to find a customer support email address lol. (I seem to faffing with lots of websites/software/companies this week so getting a little frazzled!)
2 - Lightroom 5 Trial vs full version folder hierarchy question
This question is linked to the above i- I am wondering if the folders in Lightroom are different in the trial version vs the fully paid version.
I had set up some greeting card templates and contact sheet layouts for my friend and tried to transfer them to her computer but whilst, LR 'sees' the folders it just doesn't acknowledge the templates - I tried it several ways but I've not had that issue before so will that sort itself when I get the serial number fixed?
Thank you for any help or suggestions - hope you all have a good weekend :-)
    Lenny

Hi Lenny, the two questions may be related but the trial is actually the same as the full version. I would suggest getting the serial number issue sorted out first. There have been known issues where a paid for product still shows up as a trial. There is not a lot the community can do. You need to contact Adobe directly using the link below. Use the dropdown menu for boxes (1) & (2) to scroll down the list and choose:
    1. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
    2. Serial number issues or activating my product
    3. Click on the blue button: Still need help? Contact us – then click the button marked “chat now”
It’s usually possible to start a live chat, if an Adobe agent is free, and often to get the problem fixed right away.

  • Material Serial Number Issue.

    Dear Friends,
    Material Serial Number Issue.
Its better to explain with the example.
Material Number : ABCD with serial number as 123456
There is a reservation for the Material ABCD from work order, now the warehouse person Goods Issues for the reservation ABCD with serial number 06-123456.(he issued wrong serial number)
Correction action - Reverse Goods Issue for serial number 06-123456, now Goods issue for correct number as 123456. But the systems doesnot allows the serial number, error Material ABCD 123456 is already installed. Thenin  IQ09 the material ABCD with SNO 123456 is INSTL Status.
    Now question.
    1. In 1st place how system allows the Goods issue for particular reservation with different serial number?
    2. Without issuing the serial number 123456, how the status changed to INSTL???
    3. How to solve this problem, need to change the stauts of Material 123456 as ESTO, then i can do goods issue,. how to change the status??
    Regards,
    Saravanan.S

    Hi,
Ask the workcentre to give that materail with 202 or 262 mvt to you. Now with the new reservation issue the required serial number material to site.
System does not have the serial number in reservation slip.Manually u are assigning it diuring the MIGO.

  • CS4 Extended Serial Number issue

    Hi
while registering CS4 Extended I have a problem. As Upgrade Version only CS3 Extended is shown, not my valid CS3.
    Any ideas?

Serial number issues can only be handled by calling Adobe.

  • HT1391 Can I report a stolen apple device so that the theives can not use the device ever?  I have the serial number and imei #

My ipad was stolen and I want to permanently disable the device.  Is this possible

What To Do If Your iDevice or Computer Is Lost Or Stolen
If your Mac, iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should do in advance - before you lose it or it's stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:
      1. Reporting a lost or stolen Apple product
      2. Find my lost iPod Touch
      3. AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon can block stolen phones/tablets
      4. What-To-Do-When-Iphone-Is-Stolen
      5. Lost or Stolen iPhone? Here’s What to do
      6. 6 Ways to Track and Recover Your Lost/Stolen iPhone
      7. Find My iPhone
It pays to be proactive by following the advice on using Find My Phone before you lose your device:
      1. Find My iPhone
      2. Setup your iDevice on iCloud
      3. OS X Lion/Mountain Lion- About Find My Mac
      4. How To Set Up Free Find Your iPhone (Even on Unsupported Devices)
There is no one you can report to but the police. If you report it to Apple they will just note that it was stolen. If you did not activate Find my Phone for your device, then you cannot disable it.

  • Recovery/serial number issue - stolen iPad

Help - recovery issue with a stolen iPad.  Wish there was a toll-free # I could call Apple Support for on this, but here goes.  Yesterday my first gen 32GB iPad was stolen out-of-state.  (Can't retrieve it via the Find My iPhone Location app, that's another issue and I've given up on that as a means of recovery).
But I am trying to go to my Profile and update it by adding my stolen device on there with serial number for tracking purposes (I do have the original box).
When I go to "add device" and then type in the serial number, it's telling me that that device is already registered, but it's not registered in my profile (all that's registered there is my iPhone and iPod).  Then the directions begin taking me down a path where it wants me to change my password which I don't need to do.  Any thoughts? Could whoever had my iPad have gone online already and "registered" it as theirs with the serial number?
Greatly appreciate any thoughts or help here!  Thank you!

To clarify, I thought it best that I go on and make sure that my iPad too was listed in my Apple profile (should have been previously)...  so I entered its serial number, and got the following message back...
"According to our records, this serial number is registered to another Apple ID. If you have more than one Apple ID, log in to My Support Profile with that Apple ID to see your other registered products. Not sure if you have another Apple ID? Find out"
This to me sounds fishy.  The iPad was a refurbish when originally bought - so could have been from the original user, BUT... could someone else have gone online to Apple and registered my stolen iPad under their Apple account?
I have changed my email passwords and my Apple ID password as a precaution, in addition to issuing an "erase" order for my iPad since it has a security lock on it which renders location services useless on it.

  • Apple Time Capsule Serial Number Issue

Can anyone from Apple explain why when you add in a Time Capsule serial number it is recognised on some areas of the site and not on others?

    Welcome to the discussion area!
We're all end users here on the forum, just like you. Apple likely does not even read these boards, and even if they do, there has never been an official response from them.
You need to call Apple customer support directly to review your issue.

  • Stolen Mac, no serial number

I have been stolen my MAC BOOK Pro and I obviously don't have my serial number with me, so I cannot contact the apple support team. I am wondering if by erasing my MAC it only gets erased when connected to the internet, like when blocking it, and if that information i erase will ever be found again.
There is not much info about this on the sites. I don't understand what's the point of blocking it if it only gets blocked when the person who stole it connects to internet. I just don't want them to get into my personal data and photos and information. Thanks

It must connect to the internet in order to be erased because that is the only way it can receive the instruction to be erased (i.e., how else could it be told that you want it to erase). The following has more information about Find My Mac, locking, erasing etc: https://www.apple.com/support/icloud/find-my-device/
The following has some ways to get the serial number if you need it for filing a police or insurance report: Find the serial number of your Apple hardware product - Apple Support
This won't help for this time but if you get it back or buy a replacement you may want to consider turning on FileVault. It will protect your data and information from being available to anyone: OS X: About FileVault 2 - Apple Support

  • Finding stolen iPad using serial number

My iPad 1 was stolen in September. I tried using MobileMe, but because it was the simple WiFi version, MobileMe couldn't find it. I had an unlock password set up, so the thief probably did a full reset of the iPad to use it. In any case, when everything moved to iCloud, my iPad did not follow and I was told by a tech that it won't, so I have no way of using MobileMe to find my iPad now.
That being said, can't Apple notify me if someone tries to register an iPad with my serial number? Parenthetically, I get 2-10 emails a week about trying to reset my Apple ID password; is it possible the thief is trying to get my ID? (I'll go ask that Q in the appropriate forum later.)
    Cheers,
    d

    Hi Dave, thanks.
You'd think that since Apple automatically 'sees' the serial number when the device is plugged in, they could use this info. Oh well.
And yeah, don't you worry, all my passwords were changed that very evening. I was on a plane for eight hours after I noticed my iPad wasn't in my bag and I was paranoid that I'd land and find everything had been hacked! But this continuous stream of Apple ID emails is still making me nervous, even if it does try to reassure you with the "If you didn't ask to reset this password, don't worry!" message. When you get two a day daily for two weeks, it does make you worry, ok Apple?!
Never getting another iPad ever again... too much anxiety and hassle and no ROI, even before it was stolen! Sticking to my iPhone and BOOKS!
    Cheers!

  • Recovering a lost devices serial number

    Hi,
I have had an iPad Mini and an iPhone stolen how can I find their serial numbers in iTunes. I no longer have the boxes.

Finding serial number for a device - https://discussions.apple.com/message/18246553 - from box or backup file, not from Apple.
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2526 - If you registered a device you can use My Support Profile to find a list of serial numbers that have been purchased or registered with your Apple ID.
    My Support Profile - https://supportprofile.apple.com/MySupportProfile.do
Maybe a way to find serial number after a device is no longer in your possession - https://discussions.apple.com/message/19524469 - "The easiest way to find your serial number is this Open Itunes...click help... run diagnostics.....(tick or untick as necessary) so that you just have ticked the last two, device connectivity and device sync. run these tests. it will say no ipod/ipad found but will give results of test....scroll down to bottom of results... here you will find the serial number of your last attached devices."
iPhone: Locating the serial number, IMEI, ICCID, or MEID - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1267 - from phone itself, a computer to which it has been backed up, or packaging.
