Stolen computer

Recently my computer was stolen and I am in need of the serial number so the police can track it. I called the compaq company which is the brand of my computer and they told me to file a police report and give the police the number to hp security so the police will get the information they will need to track it. Im afraid that this isnt working. So i was wondering if it was possible for best buy to look up the serial number if they can figure out when my computer was purchased. My mom bought it about two three years ago and its a compaq notebook i believe. Its a smaller laptop.

Best Buy doesn't record serial numbers at the time of purchase for most items. If there is any record, it'd be on the receipt.
The other chance, which I'm betting is a long shot... If the device was sent to the Best Buy service center for repair, they may have record of the serial number.
Receipt look-ups usually aren't difficult, with the exception of cash purchases that were not linked to a phone number or reward zone account. If it was purchased with plastic, it should be a simple look-up. If your mom made the purchase, she may have to be the one to have the receipt looked up, though. Quickest way is to contact 1-888-BESTBUY.

  • How to deactivate an account on a stolen computer

Hello, my computer was stolen and now I am trying to install the CS6 Design and Web Premium on my new computer, when the system tells me to put my serial number in, it says it is incorrect, I think this is because the Suite is still installed on the stolen computer, I want to deactivate that account so I can install and activate it on my new one.

You are allowed to have two machines with activated installations, so if you only had the one then the problem might be you are using the wrong number.
To get the lost installation deactivated you need to contact Adobe Support thru chat and ask them to reset your activations.  Then you will again have the two your license provides for.
For the link below click the Still Need Help? option in the blue area at the bottom and choose the chat option...

  • Stolen computer with Adobe Photoshop 8

Is there any way I can obtain the software for my new computer without purchasing it.  My stolen computer came with the software installed on it.

If you purchsased any of the Adobe software separately, you might be able to download it from the following link:
    http://prodesigntools.com/tag/ddl
But if you do not have the serial number info you might not be able to do more than the trial version allows.
If your stolen computer came with certain software as part of the purchase package, and you did not receive disks for this software, then chances are you are not going to be able to get the software freely otherwise.  As far as I know, software that comes with a purchase, even if you receive the disks, is normally intended solely for the machine purchased.

  • Can't retrieve my old purchases (on my stolen computer) on my new one even though i logged in with Adobe ID

    does anyone have any suggestion??
    Thank you

    thanks Shreya.
i don't think i could do that, given that the acsm files were in my stolen computer, and it's now impossible to download them again. i thought Digital Editions had some sort of way of storing the information about the purchases, but i guess i was overrating it. My bad.
    Thanks for your answer though!!

  • Computer Stolen. Need Stolen Computer to Deauthorize devices? Help?

MacPro computer Stolen. New MacPro purchase. Itunes will not authorize because more than 5 devices authorized. Must find stolen computer to deauthorize all devices. Don't have stolen computer. Some miserable low life stole it. How can I authorize my new computer?

You don't need the other computer for that:
You can de-authorize individual computers, but only by using those computers. The only other option is to "de-authorize all" from your iTunes account.
      1. Open iTunes on a computer
      2. From the Store menu, select "View my Account..."
      3. Sign in with your Apple ID and password.
      4. Under "Computer Authorizations" select "De-authorize All".
      5. Authorize each computer you still have, as you may require.
You may only do this once per year.
After you "de-authorize all" your authorized computers, re-authorize each one as required.
If you have de-authorized all computers and need to do it again, but your year has not elapsed, then contact: Apple - Support - iTunes - Contact Us.
For more information on authorization and de-authorization: iTunes Store- Authorize or deauthorize your Mac or PC.

  • HT1420 deauthorize a lost or stolen computer

How do I deauthorize a stolen computer?

You will have to deauthorize all your computers, then reauthorize the ones you still have. Note that you can only deauthorize all computers once per year.
Open iTunes Store, click on Account link under Quick Links. The option is available in your account screen.

  • Deleting adobe on stolen computer?

How do I delete my adobe program on a lost/stolen computer? I have the serial number and cd still.

Don't think that can be done. Adobe can extend your activations for other machines. You would have to talk to them about the situation (try chat).

  • HT1420 deauthorize a stolen computer

I have 5 authorized computers on my account, 2 of which I am no longer in possesion of.  Is there a way to deactivate a stolen computer without deactivating all my computers and reactivating the ones I want?
    thanks

No, individual computers can only be deauthorised directly on them, you will need to 'deauthorise all' and then reauthorise the computers that you still have.

  • Report a stolen computer?

    Hi there,
Over a year ago, my Powerbook was stolen from me: an eBay purchaser gave me a counterfeit certified cheque! I reported it to the police, and ultimately the culprit has gotten away scot-free. I've pretty much gotten over it, but a fellow MUG member suggested I contact Apple about this, and provide my stolen computer's serial number, in case they should run into this computer again. Any agreement on this issue? And if so, how would I go about doing that?
    Cheers,
    Aaron.

    Good morning,
Sadly though you can file a serial number with AppleCare support it is filed away and forgotten by Apple, it is not something that they keep a record of.
It is a common misconception that Apple keeps a 'Hotlist' of stolen equipment, however the possibility that this system could be abused is astronomical as anyone with a Serial Number from a machine (They are on the boxes) could register the machine is stolen and cause a legitimate user problems in the future.
If you reported the theft to the police you have done all that you can.
    Hope this helps! 

  • Can I use Time Machine to recover backed-up files from a stolen computer?

    Hi everyone,
I used Time Machine to back up my MacBook Pro but unfortunately it was stolen this week. I'm going to buy a new MacBook Pro and would like to recover the backed-up files from my old computer via Time Machine, though not necessarily transform the new computer into a clone of the old one. Can anyone point me to step-by-step directions for how to do this with Time Machine? Is there a way of using Time Machine to select, a la carte, which backed-up data you want to restore to your new machine, or is it an all-or-nothing deal?
Thanks for your help and advice!

    Yes. Use the migration assistant.
First, I'd set up the new computer and choose not to migrate any data (this sometimes causes issues). Run all software updates, then run the Migration Assistant (In applications). It will allow you to choose a time capsule to migrate information from. You will be able to choose what information to pull from the time capsule: it won't simply clone the old computer.

  • Stolen computer!! can i get my music files back from my ipod?

I had my computer stolen! And stupidly hadn't backed up my music files... All the files are however on my ipod. Obviously, i don't want to lose them so i'm looking for a way to transfer my files from my ipod onto itunes 8 on my new computer...
I've read about transfering the iTunes file to a new computer but obviously i can't do that because i don't have the old file.
Furthermore, i know i can listen to my files on my comptuer by, instead of syncing my ipod, chosing to manually manage my files. What i want to know is if it's possible to actually transfer the files permanently onto my new computer as independent music files instead of leaving them forever precariously sitting on my ipod.
IF i have no choice but to leave all the music solely on my ipod without backing it up on my computer, how do i go about syncing new music without deleting the old stuff?

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. There are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content only from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync.
