Stolen iPad showing up on map. LE notified. What now?

Had an iPad2 stolen this past Sunday evening from our church. Noticed Monday afternoon it was missing. Immediately logged onto iCloud to attempt to track its whereabouts. Surprisingly, someone was dumb enough to connect it to their wireless network at home. I say dumb enough, because all restrictions are enabled on the device (including no Safari, no YouTube, no purchasing apps, no in-app purchases, etc).
I called local LE and informed them that I had tracked it and had it on a map. It is in a gated subdivision at a 4,000 sq ft house worth $800K. I'm assuming their teenager probably stole it. We have cross-referenced the address with our databases and do not know the person.
LE went to the house and waited a few minutes, but left after no one answered the door. They were very nice, but were very candid in explaining that the most they can do is ask the homeowner about it and if the homeowner denies any knowledge, that is all they can do. I understand this and don't expect much more than that.
Now, three days later. Because the iPad is still on and visible on the map, and because the battery is still at about 80%, my thought it to leave it alone and just continue to watch it. I have purposely not placed it in Lost Mode just yet so as not to tip them off that we even know its missing. I'm hoping they go somewhere with it in public (coffee shop, bookstore, etc). LE told me that if they take it out of the house and I can track it and remotely have it make a sound, they can walk up and seize it - otherwise, I'm outta luck.
My question for you guys. Is this the best route? Would you continue to wait & see for it to move or would you remotely put it in Lost Mode now? I do not suspect that they are willingly going to give it back or drop it off - unless it's a parent of a teenager that took it. I was thinking about waiting until battery goes down and then putting in lost mode during the day while the kid might be at school & hoping his mom hears it and wonders what it might be.
You guys have any other creative ideas? Any creative "lock messages" I should put on it?
Thanks!
Travis
PS - I have all documentation on iPad, including the original box and paperwork with serial number.

  • Stolen iPad removed from find my iPhone list. Now what?

    See above

If the device is still setup with the Find my... service on it, it will automatically re-appear the next time the device connects to the Internet.
If not, and the device has been wiped or wasn't protected with a passcode and the Find service deactivated, there's nothing you can do.

  • HT6058 During the installation of the ios 7.0.4 update my screen froze with the iTunes icon and arrow under that and a picture of the usb plug under that.  Thanks for messing up my perfectly well functioning IPad 2 with your lousy update!  What now?

During the ios 7.0.4 update, my IPad 2 froze.  The picture on the screen is an iTunes icon, and arrow inder that and a picture of the apple usb cord.  It will not go away.  I have tried hard and soft turn offs.  Please help!

    Philly:
When there is an iOS update available, iTunes asks if you want to install it. I chose to only download the iOS 7.0.6 update, but not to install it until I had done a backup of everything on my iPad. When that iOS 7.0.6 update failed, I had NO iOS at all, just a bricked iPad.
When my son did a "clean restore" that was the same thing you'd do to wipe an iPad - just install iOS 7.0.6 and install basic iPad apps.  When you turn the iPad on after that, it indicates it wants to be connected to iTunes. At that point, my son yanked the cord so nothing else was installed.  Then, with iOS 7.0.6 already installed, iTunes on my PC didn't say it wanted to update iOS, and allowed me to choose my previous backup to be restored. All was straightforward after that.
Again, there are places on he web where you can download various versions of iOS, along with a PC utility that will do the iOS update. I think these utilities are for when you want to hack your device, so I'm not crazy about this approach.

  • My ipad shows  this: not enough storage . this ipad cannot be backed up because there is not enough icloud storage available. you can menage your storage in setting. but I cannot do anything

my ipad shows this: not enaugh storage.

    Try this now.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • I just bought the new ipad for my dad, he is in china now. after useing three weeks , he can not turn it , it shows no copy with in two weeks

the new ipad shows no copys with two weeks, so now can not get in

Has he tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds after which the Apple logo should appear - he won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

What To Do If Your iDevice Is Lost Or Stolen
If you activated Find My Phone before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only if Wi-Fi is enabled on the device. What you cannot do is track your device using a serial number or other identifying number. You cannot expect Apple or anyone else to find your device for you. You cannot recover your loss unless you insure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty.
If your iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should have done in advance - before you lost it or it was stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:

Try going to settings. Tap Reset, tap reset network connection, wait until the apple goes restart your iPad,. Back to setting tap provider and put in your network password.

  • Stolen ipad! How do I know it's erased

Hi I have been reading these posts as my ipad was stolen the other day. I enabled a pass code and have the find my iPhone enabled.
The thief connected to wifi because it notified me where it was but i haven't recieved an email to say that the remote erase has started or anything
    Is my ipad erased?
I enabled the function and it says pending  until connected to internet, but it must have connected to the internet or I wouldn't have recieved the email saying where it was!
I have changed my Apple ID password \ iCloud password my email passwords
I'm just worried and wanted some clarity to say my info has been erased
    Thanks in advance
    Benny

  • Stolen iPad recovered with Find my iPhone - It works!

Thought I would take a moment to share my experience using find my iPhone to recover my stolen iPad.
I recently had a layover at an airport in Michigan on my way to Toronto. Like an idiot, I left my iPad in the seat back on the first leg of my flight. I didn't realize it until I arrived at my destination in Toronto. I called the airline and was told that they couldn't send someone to look for it, but would happy to notify me when it was turned in if I filled out a lost article report on their website. They were confident that since it was left on the plane it would be turned in by their cleaning team.
After a few minutes I remembered Find my iPhone and activated the App on my iPhone. Within about 30 seconds I had a location on my iPad. It was still sitting in the terminal at the airport!
Fast forward to about 5:00 PM.....
I pull up the App again and see that my iPad is now moving away from the airport on the highway. After several minutes I watch as it turns into a neighborhood and pulls up outside of a house. There it stays for about 20 minutes. Meanwhile I have been sending alerts to the iPad screen with my contact information asking whoever has it to contact me immediately. Luckily they had not turned it off.
Now I am able to note the intersection nearest the location of my iPad and plug it into Google Maps. I find the house and drop a pin on it to reveal the street address. I then call the local Police, but they can't help me because I am not physically there to identify my property. Not what I was hoping for, but understandable.
My next idea was to find out if I can learn who owns the house and work out a way to conact them. I start looking for the local tax assessors office on the web and sure enough the database is accessible online. I now have the name of the owner in addition to the address! Now I figure I can contact the airline and give them this person's name to find out if they were working on the plan I was on. If so, at least they would be able to share that information with the airline and make it uncomfortable for the thief.
Now I am wondering if I can find the guys phone number! After a few web searches, I get a hit on the local version of the whitepages that gives me the phone number. I go ahead and call the number. To my surprise the guy answers the phone!
After getting hung up on a couple of times I was able to leave a voicemail with my contact information and let the person know I was pretty sure they worked for the airline since that is where I left my iPad. I assured him that I would not stop calling the airline with his name address and phone number until he lost his job unless he called me by tomorrow morning and made arrangements to return my property. Sure enough it turned out he works for the airline and called me back at 10:30 that night. After explaining to me that this was all a mistake he agreed to return it to me via fed ex next day delivery. I agreed to consider the matter closed and not pursue it any further with his employer if I received it back undamaged.
36 hours later I received my iPad back! I had initated a wipe on the device, so had to restore from back up, but besides that everything was great!
The moral of the story is to make sure you know how to use find my iPhone!! It could save you a lot of money!
PS, I know that I lost my iPad by leaving it on the plane. However, that does not give the airline employee the right to keep it. When he took it home with him, it went from lost to stolen...

Great sleuthing and story.  It's great you got your iPad back.  And that guy should really lose his job, but you said you wouldn't report him and I'm sure you're going to keep your word.  I wonder though, how many other people's possessions he's taken home with him.  How some people can sleep at night is beyond me.
I once went to the grocery store to pick up one item.  I didn't need a cart. so of course I manged to remember other items I needed, and when I realized I couldn't hold everything, I put a bar of soap in my coat pocket and knew I'd remember to pay for it at checkout.  When I got home, I realized I still had the bar of soap and I had not paid for it.  So, I drove right back to store and walked up to the manager and explained what I did and that I wanted to pay for the bar of soap.  I think he thought I'd lost my mind, but I could never take something that didn't belong to me.
Anyway, thanks for the good story with a great ending!

Check the serial number (located on back/bottom) in this lost/stolen iPad database. However, most owners are not aware of this database and don’t enter the serial number.

Also do a search, using the serial number, on your local Craig’s List. Some users list the serial number of a stolen iPad to thwart the sale of a stolen device.

  • Track stolen Ipad by using it's Itune registered email address

I had my new Ipad stolen within months of my purchase, not even have to chance to try out all features including the Icloud. So I couldn't track it by using the "Find My Iphone" apps.
Wondering if I could get notified (or how) if anyone is registering my Ipad with a new email address for Itune. So if the thieve "smart" enough to use the email address which is the same he registered for any other social network, I can track him down.
