Stolen iPhone4S, is AppleID at risk?

My son's iPhone4S was stolen in Vietnam on 4 January. He locked it remotely using find my iphone then tried to wipe everything using iCloud. The status of that request is "pending" which I understand means the phone has not yet been connected to the internet? Will all data wipe the first time the phone connects to the internet? Should he also change his AppleID for extra security? Someone in Vietnam somehow got into his contacts stored on the phone, because I am suddenly getting calls and SMS from a random person in Vietnam asking me to contact the owner of the phone and ask him for the AppleID so they can use the phone! As if.
I am in Australia by the way. And my number was not stored as "Mum" on his contacts, I am wondering how could they know to contact me out of the 100s of contacts he had listed on the phone. If they have done this, is his AppleID at risk? He has changed all passwords to Facebook, bank account etc. This is my first question to the community thank you for any insight!

Hi Winston, thanks for getting back to me.
Yes I agree with you - I guess I'm confused because they've managed to get into the phone and find my number?Even tho the phone is disabled? And had a passcode?
Or could they get my number from the SIM if they put the SIM in another phone? My son says that nothing is stored on SIMs but I'm not so sure.
Today I had 18+ calls (which I ignored) and multiple texts pleading for the Apple ID (ignored) and for my son's contact details (also ignored).
Is the phone just a useless piece of hardware to whoever bought it (or stole it)?
If the Apple ID can't be discovered somehow from breaking into the phone then I'm relieved.
(I'm still a bit freaked that they chose to call and text me. None of his friends or other family have had any calls or texts from Vietnam).

What To Do If Your iDevice or Computer Is Lost Or Stolen
    iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad
If you activated Find My Phone before it was lost or stolen, you can track it only if it is connected to the Internet by Wi-Fi or cellular. What you cannot do is track your device using a serial number or other identifying number. You cannot expect Apple or anyone else to find your device for you. You cannot recover your loss unless you insure your device for such loss. It is not covered by your warranty.
If your iPhone, iPod, iPod Touch, or iPad is lost or stolen what do you do? There are things you should have done in advance - before you lost it or it was stolen - and some things to do after the fact. Here are some suggestions:

  • Thoughts on recovering photos from wiped, stolen iPhone4

My daughter's iPhone4 was stolen - and recovered but the thief wiped it. can the photos be recovered? we have a sync from a month ago, but the photos are the loss

Nope, sorry. Anything after the last sync is gone, photos and anything updated or added since then. Apps can be re-downloaded, but that's about it. Sorry she lost her photos, but glad she got the phone back.

  • Stolen iPhone4s questions!

I got my iPhone stolen the other night and I have been tracking it on iCloud and Find my iPhone.. I have watched it go from location to location as it has been turned off and on. It is locked and in lost mode, has a contact number and a message saying where to return it. I have also reported it to the police. It is currently in offline mode but the last place it was located is a few blocks from my place surprisingly and it was there for quite awhile since 1am in the morning last night. I have Verizon and I have heard from other people etc that it makes it a little better and more secure.. is this true? I dont want to report it to Verizon just yet because I want to still be able to track it. But if they take it somewhere I don't want them to be able to activate it.  And will the theft ever be able to use it or uncrack it? if so, how?  And will I be able to see if this happens from iCloud/ FindmyiPhone ?
What should I do?  I'm hoping that wherever they go they get rejected or can't activate it and hopefully end up returning it or something. I mean who wants a useless phone ? I would even offer them money but I wouldn't even know how to do that.
    Any suggestions?

Unfortunately the phone isn't useless to whoever took it.  A couple things you can do to keep it from truely becoming "their phone" is to constantly ping it from either iCloud or another Apple device with the Find My iPhone app.  That way if the individual decides to try to take it someplace and you ping it, it will be a dead giveaway that it is not their phone and is most likely stolen.  Also, see if the police will meet you someplace near the last known location of your phone.  That way you have a better chance of getting it returned if the officers can hear the audible tone when the phone is pinged.  Unfortunately, I do not know of any service provider being able to make your phone "more secure".
Let me know if anything works and don't hesitate to leave me a message if you need to.
    Hope this helps!

  • Stolen Iphone4 with new Apple ID

HI, my phone is purchased from USA last summer by a private individual. The end of winter was stolen from purse in Bulgaria and then filed a complaint with the police about his theft. The phone was discovered by IMEI seized by the girl who bought it from the thief, probably. During this time she has recorded a new Apple ID and now we can not run the phone in action. Please help!
    Thank's.
    K.S

Settings>iTunes/App store...tap the ID shown...sign out...now, sign back in with the ID you want to use.
Be aware, any content obtained with your old ID is forever tied to that ID. Apps can only be updated using the same ID used to originally obtain them.

  • HT201304 how to get files from my stolen iphone4

how do i get my files from my iphone that was stolen

    Hi,
It depends on what files, what you had synced to Itunes or Icloud and when you last did a sync.
If the phone is gone and or wiped you can forget that. You next chance is from sync sessions and backups.
Do you have a new Iphone yet?
    Cheers!

  • Is it possible to locate a stolen iphone4 using IMEI???

Help!!!!!!! I never had the chance to activate find my iphone..I made the registration....What I really want to know is...if they ever try to use service support, will they contact the real owner of the device?????

No, if Find My iPhone is not activated. All you can do is go to your carrier and ask them to block the number so you don't get huge call bills.
Sorry, unless the finder is honest enough to call you, it's gone.

  • My iPhone4 was stolen in Barcelona on SEP11. The serial number is 111*****4T

I went to Barcelona on September last year and my iPhone4 was stolen around Mt Mujic.
At that time I haven't registered the product yet.
Now I tried to register the serial number '81*****A4T' but the system said it registered with another appleID.
How could I find out who is register with my STOLEN iphone4 serial number?

Put in your serial number here: Apple - Support - Check Your Service and Support Coverage
and follow this advice at the bottom of the page shown after your serial has been checked
If you believe that the information shown for your product is incorrect, you can submit your proof of purchase online or by fax. Your sales receipt is needed for warranty validation, so be sure to keep it in a safe place. Your warranty is the same whether or not you register.

  • How do I change the AppleID associated with my iPhone4?

My iPhone4 is associated with AppleID me@work I also use AppleID me@home The email account me@work no longer exists.  I want to reassign my iPhone4 to AppleID me@home.  How do I do this?

iOS5 installed? If so, try the following:
Under Settings --> Store, sign out. Then sign in again using your preferred Apple ID
In Settings --> Messages --> Recieve At --> Click Apple ID, then sign out and sign in with another ID
In Settings --> iCloud, click "Delete Account" to unlink the phone from current Apple ID. Sign in with the new preferred ID.
If at any point it asks if you want to delete locally stored data, tell it no.
If that doesn't work for you, then open iTunes, plug in the phone, and reset it to factory defaults. Then set it up again as a NEW phone with the preferred Apple ID rather than restoring from backup.
Caveat: If you install apps that were purchased with me@work, there is no way to transfer them to me@home. You can install them if the computer used to set up the phone is authorized for the me@work account. BUT this means every time you need to update apps, you will have to sign out of me@home in Store, then sign in again as me@work... it will only update apps purchased on currently signed-in Apple ID. Only SIMPLE solution to this that I know is to re-purchase all the apps.

  • Can apple locate a lost or stolen iphone

Can apple locate a lost or stolen iphone4 ? My son thinks he left it at a local store yesterday and of course when he went back no one knew anything about it. He did not have the "find my iphone" app installed and also did not use icloud. So we're wondering if their any options open at this point or do we just move forward with an insurance claim and be done with it.
    Thanks, rgares!

The only way to locate/disable/erase any lost/stolen iPhone is through Find My Phone or a similar app. However, this requires that Find My Phone be setup/activated, on your phone, before it was lost/stolen. You would then login at iCloud.com & try to locate it. This requires the phone be turned on & have an Internet connection. There is no other way to locate a lost/stolen iPhone. Apple can't/won't help you, nor will your carrier. Report the loss to the Police, your carrier & Insurance company. Change all of your passwords.
