Stolen laptop reported to police without recovery software installed

Laptop is gone I have everything that came with it except the laptop and powercord. Box everything I desperately need it my whole life was on it I read you can track by ip or mac address but I didn't write it down anybody hsbe any magic they could work please I start classes this week also. Anything at all is appreciated

I am always sorry to hear of misfortunes like yours.
The chances of you having the notebook back are very slim if you don't have LoJack for laptops installed and with an active subscription.  I know it is not what you want to hear, but that is, unfortunately, reality.
With your next laptop, backup your data on an external disk at home in a safe place.

erico

  • I would like to know is it safe to use my ipad without virus software installed on it

I would lime to know,is it safe to use my ipad to bank and shop without any virus software installed on it.

There is no real functioning  Antivirus for iPad because currently there are no viruses that can affect an iPad.
The closed nature of the operating system prevents the Antivirus from installing and running itself, as well as preventing any Antivirus from being able to scan the iPad's file system in search of a virus.
So in short, usage of the iPAd is as safe as you make it.
Like has been said, don't  bank in open networks, don't click on links in emails you don't recognize, don't browse sites that look shady or untrustworthy, etc...

  • IPhone 4S stolen from my room, had no recovery app installed

Recently I upgraded to iPhone 5 and since then my iPhone 4S was kept in the table drawer. The iPhone 4S was factory unlocked and was originally on contract to Rogers but was taken off contract after I upgraded to iPhone 5. I had a housemate who knew I have two iPhones with me. Last week he left the house for another province and couple days back I discovered my iPhone 4S is not there in the table drawer. I called my landlord and told him everything about the incident. After that I filed a police complaint at local police station against that guy. To my surprise, the police says "thousands of phones go missing everyday and we can't search for every phone" and chances to get my iPhone seems slim. The phone was restored to factory settings and had no apps installed therefore it makes the search process more difficult. I know with the help of IMEI# the police can trace the phone which I'm **** sure is either sold or in-use by the same guy who stole it however the police seems reluctant to pursue such a case although they have registered my complaint.
Is there any way Apple can track down my phone? or any other possible ways to get my phone back.

Sounds similar to my story, and there isnt anything we can do unless the cops give u all the attention in the world!

  • Any way to trace a stolen laptop?

I know the answer to this is probably no, but I was wondering if there is any way that anyone knows of to trace a stolen laptop?
I'm in the UK. I have the system disks, box (and therefore serial number). I also have the MAC address.
Its quite distinctive, as it has a few defects. Does anyone know of any noticeboards or anything?
    Thanks

Sorry, but it's almost impossible to trace a stolen laptop, particularly if you didn't pre-install one of the utility/service combinations such as LoJack (if even they help at all). Except in one singular incident reported a couple of months ago (it involved the Back To My Mac service and the iSight camera), it's not been possible to trace a computer, even with the MAC address, over the Internet, and I can't imagine that posting a notice on some public web site would be fruitful (and it might even open you up to other problems). About all you can do is report the theft to your local police and hope for a lucky break. And of course your homeowner's insurance if you have same.
    Good luck.

  • SCCM query for Windows 8 machines without software installed

Would anyone be able to point me in the direction of an SCCM query for a collection that would list all Windows 8 machines without certain software installed?
    Thanks

I have this query to for systems without software installed:
    select SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceID,SMS_R_SYSTEM.ResourceType,
    SMS_R_SYSTEM.Name,SMS_R_SYSTEM.SMSUniqueIdentifier,SMS_R_SYSTEM.
    ResourceDomainORWorkgroup,SMS_R_SYSTEM.Client from SMS_R_System
    inner join SMS_G_System_COMPUTER_SYSTEM on
    SMS_G_System_COMPUTER_SYSTEM.ResourceID = SMS_R_System.ResourceId
    where SMS_G_System_COMPUTER_SYSTEM.Name not in
    (select SMS_G_System_COMPUTER_SYSTEM.Name from  SMS_R_System
    inner join SMS_G_System_COMPUTER_SYSTEM on
    SMS_G_System_COMPUTER_SYSTEM.ResourceID = SMS_R_System.ResourceId
    inner join SMS_G_System_ADD_REMOVE_PROGRAMS on
    SMS_G_System_ADD_REMOVE_PROGRAMS.ResourceID =
    SMS_R_System.ResourceId where SMS_G_System_ADD_REMOVE_PROGRAMS.
    DisplayName like "%SOFTWARE%")
The query works, but I would like to modify it so the query only includes certain versions of Windows. Any suggestions would be appreciated

Hello- My laptop needs the OS X recovery run. Can I download the software directly to a thumb drive without affecting my desktop unit? The Geek Squad said they need to wipe my hard drive and re-install the operating system. Thanks.

They already damaged you Mac by fooling with the BootCamp partition without knowing what they were doing. I wouldn't suggest haveing them help you do anything.
Here is the article that describes the Recovery HD: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
First, see if you can boot into the Recovery HD. Restart and hold down cmd-r until you see the gray screen. It should boot into Recovery. If your Mac shipped with Lion or Mountain Lion, it will boot into Internet Recovery if it cannot boot into the Recovery HD on the hard drive.
They should have tried this at the store.

  • Stolen laptop recovery?

My wife is really happy with her new Air, but as others have noted, it's so easy for an unscruplous person to walk away with it, especially since there's no security slot for a cable lock. I know of three software tools intended to assist in recovery of a stolen laptop (of any sort) each of which claims to be the best ever. I wonder if anyone has direct experience - normal daily use, or an actual theft event - with any of them that they could share?
    The candidates are:
    1. LOJACK FOR LAPTOPS (http://lojackforlaptops.com/products/theft_recovery.asp) - the original in the field. Best sounding recovery service.
    2. Orbicule (http://www.orbicule.com/) website vague on details, attractive rate for family license' offshore (Belgium) company which could be a disadvantage for US buyer.
    3. GadgetTrack (http://www.gadgettrak.com/products/verey/) best price (one time fee); also has "coming soon" product for soon-to-be-my G3 iPhone which I like and stickers & service for other less exotic devices. Otherwise web site is vague on details.
    Thanks!

    4) the recovery cd gives me NO FREEDOM at ALL!!!
    5) I've installed ms VS.net 2005 beta 2 Team edition, and after a reboot it tries to do some settings to Norton, and It fails and tells me that I have to reinstall Norton... which I can't do without deleting every thing on my computer, and start all over with install of ms VS.net... and vupti you've got a dead loop...

perhaps this should have been sendt as a mail to toshiba, but they don't HAVE AN EMAIL ADRESS TO SUPPORT...
so I hope someone here can help solve my problems, and help me to the software I've paid for!!!
    //Jop...(Jonas F Jensen).
by the way, I couldn't awoid to see that on my desktop it says "Toshiba -Choose freedom". In anyway that NOT my first impression of toshiba!

    Hello jopsen
Before I answer all your questions I just want to give you some information. All Toshiba notebooks are delivered with Recovery DVD or CD. This recovery image contains Operating system, all necessary drivers, tools and utilities. The software is bundled with hardware and you can use it just with your unit. Like you know it is not necessary to make any Windows registration.
    1. False. You can use recovery CD or DVD to create different partitions. In this case you must use expert mode option
    2. False. Just if you use Standard installation the whole HDD capacity will be used.
    3. As far as I know the Norton security software installed on your unit is additional service from Toshiba. I am not sure but you can use it for a year and after that you must pay for the update license
    4. False. You can do with your unit what you want and nobody forced you to use just Toshiba image. You can install on your notebook what ever you want (WXP Home, WXP Pro. Or Linux)
    5. Have no experience with MS VS and can not give you a proper explanation. Just a advice. Before you want to install something make a restore point in System Restore tool. On this way you can go to previous status. Try to deactivate Norton before you try to install MS VS
    6. as far as I know I386 folder is copied to HDD and if you need some files browse to I386 folder
    7. Why not? Install the unit using MS WXP full version.
    8. Download the Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 Trial from the Microsoft website:
    https://microsoft.order-4.com/onenotedl/welcome.asp?id=front
Install the OneNote 2003 Trial, using the Product Key from the Certificate of Authenticity which is provided with your computer, rather than the Product Key provided on the Microsoft website. The Toshiba-supplied Product Key will unlock the full version of OneNote
    9. All necessary drivers, tools and utilities you can find on Toshiba download page
    10. That is right. The OS on your unit can be used just with the notebook and must not be activated. You have bought a recovery version.
By the way, the recovery installation can be finished for 20 minutes and the unit is ready for work. It is very good for users who dont have a lot of experience. Believe me for usually installation you need about two hours and there is no guarantee that you will be able to configure the unit properly.
About impressions we can discus but, in my opinion, the recovery installation is absolutely user-friendly for non expert users.
    Good luck!

  • My computer somehow restarted then deleted all my progress from Word documents. Is there any way to get these documents back without purchase of a data recovery software?

Recently when I open my Mac the screen stays black until I press the start button a few times. Usually at this point it's in sleep mode. This time, however, the computer restarted completely, losing any word documents that I had left open prior. Is there any way I can recover these files without a purchase of a data recovery software? I've tried looking in the 'recent' tab, but it didn't save anything I have done in the last week, and finals are this coming week. Please help!

If the system just Restarted on it's own, Shut down while you were working on something then started back up all those changes, edits, you had done in that app, document, are gone.

  • CQ57 Create recovery software from one laptop to fix a second w/ new hard drive

My son's CQ57 will start in Safe Mode only.  I ran the setup diagnostics and the hard drive failed.  I bought and installed an equivalent size hard drive.  The disks that may have come with this laptop are at my exwife's house and she can't find them.  I have a similar CQ57 that was my other son's.  Can I create the necessary recovery software from mine to get the new hard drive going?  It is Windows 7.

Usually Recovery Discs from one machine will not work on another ,unless they are the same model.

  • Hi, my iPhone 4 was stolen two weeks ago, and I called ATT to suspend the service. Today, we were able to trace it and it is under a different name.  What should I do? Should I report to police?

Hi, my iPhone was stolen two weeks ago, and I called ATT to suspend the service.  Today, we were about to find it using my iPod, and it is now under a different name.  What should I do?  Should I report to police?  I did called ATT again, and they told me that they cannot do anything, since the SIM card might have been replaced.

Doesn't hurt to call the police.
The SIM wasn't replaced; if it were, you wouldn't have been able to locate it.

  • How to track stolen laptops?

I lost my Lenovo G580 Laptop last week.
It doesn't have any tracking programs installed.
But i have the serial number and MAC id of my Laptop.
Is there a way that i can be able to track my laptop...

    hi Arul_Prakash_V,
Welcome to the Lenovo Community and sorry to hear about your trouble.
AFAIK, the only method to track a laptop is via the Anti Theft Technology. It's a lojack for laptops that's embedded on the motherboard's BIOS (chip) and is usually bundled with tracking software (subscription) like the Absolute's Computrace.  When this chip is activated with the help of Absolute CompuTrace then they should be able to track or remotely lock the unit. Otherwise, there's no technology yet to track the laptop via the serial number without the abovementioned methods.
I recommend you report the stolen laptop to the local authorities so that you can claim the unit back once it's recovered. You can also contact lenovo and flag the laptop (via serial number) as "stolen" so anyone who calls for support on the unit will also be flagged.
    Regards

  • Recovering from a stolen laptop.

    Hi all,
I'm posting this on my wife's account, since she owns the iPod in question, yet I'm lumped with trying to fix the thing.
For the fourth time, we've been broken into and on this occasion lost the laptop to which her iPod (which was not stolen) was authorised and synchronised. So what we have now is the situation where we have an iPod full of content that we can't do a **** thing with.
So far I've done the following:
    o Installed iTunes 9.0.2.25 on Windows 7,
o Authorised the iPod again with the original account,
o Synchronised the iStore content back into the Library (and this is the point of contention)
What I can't seem to do is to synchronise "all" content. This software only lets me bring back into the Library content that was purchased through the store. How on earth is this a practical solution? The majority of the content is from our cd collection and the likes, and it's not particularly practical to have to sit down ripping content for the next weeks to months ahead trying to reconstruct the library as it exists now on the iPod.
I'm aware that I can copy the content in its raw format from the iPod at the filesystem level, but I'm unsure if there's any value in this, since the directory and file naming structure is randomised. There wouldn't be much point in bringing a directory named "AszDg" back onto the computer. I'm assuming the filenames wouldn't be an issue, since they should contain metadata with the correct information in them. But if the directory name is used in something like the "Artist" column, then that's the kind of thing I'm concerned about.
Am I missing something, or is there no other option here except to let iTunes do as it suggests and wipe the entire iPod? So, in a nutshell, if you have either your laptop or pod stolen, thereby creating a decoupling of the authorisation process, does Apple leave you high and dry?
    Cheers,
    Lain

Are you saying you have reformatted a PC drive that is now connected or installed in your MBP or are you asking how to recover files on a reformatted drive in a PC? If the latter you would need to purchase recovery software that works on a PC. You cannot use OS X software to recover PC files on a PC formatted drive although you could give it a try. You would need recovery software for OS X:
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten with recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.
Much depends upon how you reformatted the drive. A standard full PC format (not a quick format) would render any data unrecoverable.

  • Lenovo Laptop report that Windows 7 is no longer genuine

    Hi all,
We have a Lenovo Laptop and we use the recovery disk to downgrade the Windows 8 to Windows 7.
We used the Laptop for about 2 Months and suddenly today it reported that the Windows 7 is no longer genuine. We contacted Lenovo for this issue and they said it is the problem of Microsoft's Activation.
However, we contacted Microsoft Licensing Team and they said our key is not valid!
Is there anyone who can figure out what is the cause of the issue and how to fix it?
    Thank you very much!

  • How to use sharing to find a stolen laptop

I saw a news story about a guy whose laptop was stolen. He accessed the laptop remotely and watched the activity on it. He finally saw the thief enter his name and address to register on a web site, then he sent the police to that address and they recovered the laptop. (That was a windows machine.) I saw another article - a few months ago - about a stolen Mac laptop that was recovered when the woman who owned it accessed it remotely and used the built-in camera to take a picture of the thief. Cool stuff - which I could not do!
I use a Mac laptop as my only computer, and I travel a lot. If it got stolen, I'd like to be able to access it remotely and try to recover it. I looked at the sharing preferences, and there are ten different options that can be turned on or off. And the descriptions of each of those options are very minimal.
After reading the news stories about people who recovered their stolen laptops, I'd really like to know how to set up sharing services on my Mac to be able to do the same thing.
Are there any articles or web sites or support notes on the topic of "How to set up and use sharing to recover a stolen Macintosh"? If there are, can you direct me to them? If not, this would a great article or support note for somebody to write.
What sharing services would you turn on? If there are configuration options for those services, how should the options be set? If the computer is stolen, what actions would take to track the computer and try to recover it?

that's correct but there are ways around that too (if one knows them). physical access to the computer trumps any safeguards you can put. of course, not every thief would know how to circumvent a firmware password. Still, it's not such a great secret. the method has been discussed many times on this forum for example. I'm not trying to discourage you from buying the software. I just wanted to explain that none of this is foolproof.
