Stolen mac - possible recovery?

I'm not sure if this is even possible, but I figured it is worth a try.
I recently had my previous MacBook Pro stolen from my house. I had purchased several albums of music, as well as movies and apps in my iTunes that was loaded on that computer, and of course now that I have purchased a new computer I would really like to have them back. I did not create an external backup of my computer, or use the time machine thing, although now I think I understand its worth.
I had 2 basic questions about those purchases:
1) is it possible to recover the purchases and load them onto my new macbook?
2) is it possible to de-authorize that computer to play the content? I authorized my new computer and it indicated that it was 1 of 2. There wasn't any De-authorize all option that showed up when I checked my acct info.
Any help with either question would be greatly appreciated.

is it possible to recover the purchases and load them onto my new macbook?
Click here and ask, or just redownload the apps for free.
is it possible to de-authorize that computer to play the content?
See above. Note that the iTunes Store staff may not be able to change the copy of the iTunes authorization record on the stolen MacBook Pro.

Sounds to me like the file is probably corrupt. If you had hard drive corruption or damage, that could easily result in recovered files not being fully intact. If you were trying to recover accidentally deleted files, it's possible they might have been partially overwritten before recovering. There are never any guarantees with file recovery.
Without more information on the circumstances that led you to try recovery, it's hard to give advice on what to try from here. You could always try another file recovery tool, like Data Rescue 3. Just be sure you're taking appropriate precautions when doing recovery. See Recovering deleted files.

  • How to find a stolen mac book pro

i recently had a mac book pro stolen from me, it was locked and on. i have no serial number for it, and i was wandering if there is any way to track it?
    Please help.

Just about all of the easy methods of tracking a stolen Mac depend on you setting them up before it gets stolen. After it gets stolen, it is still possible, but for you to have any chance you would have to be a rather advanced network engineer who remembers a few key network attributes about your laptop and left some back doors open before the theft. And even then, it's a lot harder than if you had turned on anti-theft features before, not after, the theft.

  • HT203543 "Find my Mac" says "Recovery Partition Required".

"Find my Mac" says "Recovery Partition Required" after recently replacing my HDD with a Solid State Drive. I used Carbon Copy Cloner to mirror the hard drive before install. I am looking for some help to get this fixed on my Late 2011 Macbook Pro.

You did not transfer the Recovery HD from your old drive. CCC does not do that unless you specifically set it up to do so. Had you used Disk Utility instead it would have cloned the Recovery HD automatically. If you cannot restore the Recovery HD from your old hard drive to your new SSD, then you cannot use Find My Mac.
At this point you can try the following:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Download and install the 10.10.1 update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Strange question re stolen mac and App store log-in

I was unfortunate to have my macbook pro stolen a couple of months ago. It disn't have a login screen so anybody could use it without wiping anything etc [yeah, I know]
Anyway, I hardly ever used App store as I was experiencing a bug.... I couldn't launch it or update my software because of Network connection errors.... I subsequently found this was due to Little Snitch. When I successfully launched the App app today I noticed a strange email address in the Apple ID box that I had never seen before and Spotlight couldn't find in any variation or form. This was on my iMac which only I have ever had access to. I should stress that I only ever used the App store a couple of times under Snow Leopard about a month before my macbook was stolen and couldn't use it all once I upgraded to Lion due to the Little Snitch issue. My macbook was Snow Leopard.
I've been using macs since the Classic and regard myself a semi-pro user and I've never seen anything like this before.
What would be the odds of asking Apple to check this email addess as it seems to ba an Apple ID and matching against the stolen macs serial number?
..... as I said, no one has access to my iMac and this adress was the default when I tried to log in to the App store for the first time [about 3rd time ever] today.

  • TS4036 where does icloud store my mac osx recovery key?

where does icloud store my mac osx recovery key for file vault?

Note that you have to have specifically chosen to store the key with Apple at the time you created the FileVault encryption, and chosen security questions so that you can identify yourself when you come to retrieve it. If you did not store it with Apple in this way and do not have a record of it elsewhere then you cannot proceed. All this has nothing to do with iCloud and the process is not automatic.

  • HT1366 Any way to retrieve a serial number for my stolen Mac book without the receipt?

Please tell me there is a way to retrieve the serial number on my stolen Mac book I purchased about 5 years ago so I no longer have the receipt

    Hello Jrose33,
Sorry to hear about your MacBook.  I found a couple of resources that might help with locating the serial number for your MacBook.
If you registered yoru MacBook when you purchased it, you can view the serial number in the Support Profile of the Apple ID you registered it to:
Although Apple does not have a process to track or flag lost or stolen product, you can use My Support Profile to find a list of serial numbers that have been purchased or registered with your Apple ID.
    Go to My Support Profile*.
Sign in with your Apple ID.
View your purchases in "My Products".
You can find the full article here:

If you never registered your MacBook with your Apple ID, you can also find the serial number on the packaging:

    Hi!
Three Mac's were stolen from my office  wednesday night. One of them has Adobe CC installed. On a new iMac I have installed the apps again, but I can't open them.

  • Un-registering a stolen Mac?

My laptop has been stolen and I have bought a new one. But I can no longer synchronise my iPod in iTunes as I now have 5 approved devices - one of which is the stolen Mac. How to I un-register the stolen one?
    Peter

Believe it or not, your  registration may be your clue to where it is located.   Ask the iTunes store customer service to look for purchases with that Mac and try to track down its IP.  That may in turn lead you to the thief.  So don't be too quick to unregister it.
