Stolen MacBook Air

My 13" Macbook Air, S.N. RM632234U9B, was stolen from my office in Glendale, CA over the Christmas Holidays. I reported it to both company security and the  Police. I had Find My iPhone on it, so I activated the lock code and set the erase function.
This evening, two weeks later, (January 10th) I received a notice that my MacBook Air was being erased. When I logged into Find My iPhone I discovered that it was no longer possible to track the location of the computer. Although I am relieved that my data has been wiped, I'm quite frustrated that the erase function also removes the tracking ability. (I don't recall seeing any explanation to that effect when I selected that option.)
Given the cost of Apple hardware and the sophistication of the product, I was expecting to have the ability to report stolen product to Apple and a way to track it even though personal data has been erased. Have I just made it easier for the thief to fence a six month old MacBook? Apparently Apple does not offer this, even though I registered so they have the serial number and mac address.
There ought to be a better way to handle this sort of situation.

After having browsed around a bit on the web, I'm very disappointed at the fragmentary nature of the information that is available about how Find My iPhone works.  I've read that once you erase the computer it can no longer be tracked, that the system will only report the last known position for 24 hours and that if the computer is eventually found you can unlock it with the four digit code you used to lock it. Currently when I log into iCloud and do a search it reports that computer was erased an hour after the earlier message. I have to say that the User Interface for Find My iPhone appears simple, but the details deserve a much better explanation. There should also be a way to track and hold the last known position indefinitely and immediately scroll to it wherever it was.

  • How will i be informed if my stolen macbook air is tracked?

I had my macbook air stolen at about 2 weeks ago. I activated the track my mac, but since then it was never turned on as I can see through the net. So, I ask: how will I be informed if my stolen macbook air is tracked?

Thank you very much!!! I just wanted to express my frustration to know how simple it is to get away from this "weak" sense of security that is the "track my apple device". It should be something independently of the OS, but at least linked to its serial number!!!!! Congratulations to the Apple to be so kind to the thieves!!!!!! (I was sarcastic now!).

  • What do I do if I do not have the Serial Number of my Stolen Macbook Air

I bought my Macbook Air last year in February while in the States and I left the Box it came in there. Recently my Macbook was stolen and I dont have the serial Number. I had it linked to Find My iPhone App and I have currently put a lock that has a pending status till they (the thieves) connect it to the internet.
How can I get the serial number maybe via my Apple ID so that I can call Apple Care and report it stolen.
    Please help.

    Catherine Nassimbwa,
I would recommend you try following this article http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1941 or http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1366 to find the serial number of your MacBook. See if that helps any.

Hey, sorry for a late answer. I got very busy setting up my MacBook Air hehe.
Yes, it worked really nice to just install Mac OS X on a usb flash storage and then i just created 3 partitions on the SSD storage where i have Windows 7, games and programs and partition for music.
Ofc, Mac OS X is really slow by having it installed on a USB flash storage though. But i will only use it to try out Mac OS X and to update important things.
After that was done, then i just installed Windows 7 on the first partition on the SSD. When that was done, then i installed the Boot Camp drivers for Windows 7.
When that was done, then i could choose to just use Windows 7 as the main OS under Startup tab in the Boot Camp program. If i don't have the USB flash storage plugged in, then i don't even get up the choice to choose Mac OS X there.
I also found out that if i have a USB flash storage plugged in while booting Windows 7 (not with the USB flash storage with Mac OS X), then it can slow down the time the white picture shows before the laptop starts to load Windows 7.
So now i have installed everythging in Windows 7 of what i need and everything works good. I even tried the new game Fallout New Vegas on the MacBook Air. And suprisingly, it ran the game pretty well even when i had the graphic on max.
It was fully playable with the graphic on High (Ultra is the best settings for graphic there). It was even running good with full Anti-Alisaing and Anisotropic Filtering. But just because i like to have a smoothest possible game, then i don't use the AA and AF now. So it runs good.
I'm even gonna try S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call Of Pripyat on the MacBook to see how that will go.
So far i'm very satisfied with the MacBook Air 11.6 inch version with 64 GB SSD storage, 2 GB RAM and 1.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo CPU.

  • HT3255 Any way to find my stolen MacBook Air?

Stolen yesterday. How can I find it?

    First,
Did you have "Find my Mac" enabled and configured on your Air? This is the built-in means for the Air to be somewhat protected against loss by making the unit locatable if the thief were to use the guest account to login and use internet features.
If no such preventative meaure was taken, then ordinary means of law enforcement are what you are left with.

A MacBook Air was reported stolen
From a room at my hotel that belong to a guest. I request a apple Id and password from the guest in order to track it though iCloud, when I login into the account the MacBook was not their, however I saw other device. A few days has past then the MacBook appear. How does that happened, please explain?

For a stolen Macbook to appear in iCloud - the person who stole it must turn it on.
You can't track something that's turned off.

  • My Macbook Pro was stolen, and I have replaced it with a Macbook Air. New hard drive is too small for a Time Machine restore. How do I restore my more-expensive apps (ie iWorks) on my new Macbook without repurchasing them?

My Macbook Pro was recently stolen, and I have replaced it with a Macbook Air. I attempted to simply do a restore from the Macbook Pro's Time Machine backup, but since the new Macbook Air's hard drive is significantly smaller, a Time Machine restore was not possible. I even tried to choose only settings or only my User Profile (option) when restoring, but the backup was still too large to do a restore onto the new machine. How do I restore my more-expensive apps (ie iWorks) onto my new Macbook without repurchasing them? Also, I reaad somewhere that if you went to the Mac App Store and attempted to repurchase the app and clicked BUY, it would simply alert you that you have already purchased the app (and trigger a re-download)... NOT THE CASE... So I just dropped another $19.99 for a second copy of Pages... Not my intention....
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you should get a usb backup drive as well.  time machine has limited use in my eyes. it saves things. but older things can be errased ad space drops without telling you
nothing beats data redundancy.  2 saves is. 1.    and 1 is none
im personally not fond of time machne though i use it only for a recovery parameter for a mac
id never ever myself consider time machine a genuine data backup tool.  though most do consider it as such
drive clones such as superduper and carbon copy cloner can clone your entire drive for emergency recovery.  and you can boot from them as well o. another mac

How can I check that second hand macbook air is not stolen?

Ask for the original purchase receipts.
Take it to the Apple store  and make sure that the computer is not stolen
provided they have any such information.
    Best.

HI, My Macbook Air was stolen this week from my checked baggage.
I have the box with all the information SN etc.. Is there a way to disable this device?  Block it from my Yahoo email? Locate it? Any ideas?

If you activated "Find My Mac" in iCloud before the loss, maybe. Otherwise no.

  • MacBook Air stolen, how do I sync with new one?

My MacBook Air got stolen a few weeks ago. After trying to recover it, offering rewards, 'find my [Mac]', etc. I bit the bullet and bought myself a new one. I had Time Machine backups, so restored those onto my new MBA and off I was as if nothing had happened. Pfew.
That is, until I tried to add some music on to my iPhone. A new Mac, so it needs to be set up to sync with the new Mac. I use iCloud for backing up my iPhone, but music still requires a link with my computer. And so now I'm worried ... what will happen when I link the phone to my new MBA? I don't care about the music I'll lose, I have this in my library. But will it require me to re-download my apps, what about the app settings and content? What about my photos?
Without access to the original Mac, with the new Mac set up and in use for a while now,
how do I get my iPhone to 'sync' with my new computer, without losing anything other than music and videos on there?

Try this document. It should help. https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141

  • What should i do? my macbook air got stolen.

hi, it has been 3 days since my macbook air got stolen, when i try to locate it on find my iphone it always says offline. unfortunately i removed the password, i want to know if my find my iphone feature in mac is still on, or it will still show up in find my iphone app even if the feature in my mac is turned off? what should i do to locate it? it always says offline. on my app the lock is still on pending.

Sorry to hear of the lose. The only thing you can do is contact the police and report it. Even if you find it with that "Find My iPhone/Mac" thing I doubt you will ever see it again.

  • MacBook Air stolen recently. Can I re-install my purchased standalone LR5 onto a new laptop?

I purchased a standalone version of LR5 in February of this year. My  MacBook Air was stolen a few days ago (so sad), and I want to know - can re-install LR5 onto a new laptop (I have the serial number and my previous laptop was the first installation)?
This is a side question that perhaps I need to post into another thread, but I have over 7000 photos backed up onto an external HD, many of which were edited, yet previously I had lost many of those edits when I retrieved the images from the ext HD.
I have been managing my library outside of LR5 and only making LR5 aware of the location when I am editing a set, rather than importing into a main catalog inside of LR5. If the raw files are saved elsewhere (ext HD for example), then where is the non-destructive edit information saved, and should I be doing something different in the future in order to preserve the edits I have made?
Typically, when I am finished with a set, I have been exporting them as full-sized jpegs, which I know are saved, but how do I keep from losing the edits that haven't been exported?
    Thanks in advance...

I recently replaced a laptop. When I tried to activate Adobe CC it gave me a warning that CC was installed on 2 computers already, and a choice of going to one of the others and signing out, which I did, or singing out of both from that screen on Adobe's website. Point is that you should "sign out" of Adobe CC on the stolen computer so you still have another license to use and so the thief cannot use it. I am not entirely sure how to do that, but am sure there is a way.
Original post talked about purchasing the stand-alone version, so none of this applies.
