Stolen Time Machine Backup drive - security questions

Hi,
I had my Time Machine Backup drive stolen out of my bag at the airport. My question is, is there any security on the drive? i know its not encrypted, but i'm wondering if someone can plug the drive into another computer and have full access to all of my files w/o any need for password etc?
thanks,
-g

Yes is the short answer.
If you were using File Vault, I think your backups would be encrypted too, but I don't use File Vault so I don't know for certain.
What I do is create a small encrypted disk image and store all of my sensitive information such as passwords, etc. on it. Your keychain on MacOS X is similarly encrypted, so those passwords are automatically safe. But any documents you had or e-mail messages, or address book info is all available.

My time machine backup drive is full. The computer will not back up to it, telling me that the drive is full. I thought the software would start deleting the oldest backups and continue using the drive. Is there a setting that I need to change?

Here you are. It is a lot of data, but I think I have only captured from the start of the last attempted backup to the failure.
I had posted a question about copying my wife’s data from her backup to my hard drive to allow her to use my computer while hers was in for repairs. You gave me the answer and I followed it. This has been happening since then. (Her computer data has the name “Linda” which you will see occasionally.
    Thank you .

Yes you can make multiple backups on one hard drive, for example if you’ve 1TB hard drive installed in your PC and you’ve two Mac Machines with 500GB drive each then you just make two backup images with size of 500GB each.

  • How do I repair a damaged time machine backup drive/remove pictures from library on locked/failing external drive

I have a WD 1TB external hard drive that I use as my time machine backup drive as well as to store a number of things including my iphoto library (due to its size of about 85 GB) as well as documents. I began using the WD 1TB external drive with my 2007 13" MacBook and when I purchased a brand new 13" MacBook Pro in 2013 I used the WD to transfer what I wanted to the new laptop. My new MacBook Pro is running OSX 10.8.4 (2.9 GHz Interl Core i7 with 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3) (not the retina display). The WD 1TB product # is WDBACX001... and it's only about one year old so I'm super bummed that it's failing and trying to take my life with it It has only ever been used with my two MacBooks, never with a PC.
The external WD was working fine until this week when I noticed that it wasn't appearing on my desktop. I rebooted, unplugged and replugged the WD drive in each USB portal, and still nothing. I ran Disk Utility to verify and repair the disk, which did force it to show up on the desktop again, though it made everything painfully slow. After running the repair function Disk Utility told me that the drive couldn't be repaired, and that I should backup whatever is on it and restore the WD drive. I managed to pull off most of the documents before it decided to freeze up my laptop (I had a couple of folders with a few documents each left), but I wasn't able to move the iphoto library over before the drive disappeared again. I got it back by running the repair option in disk utility, with the same message that the WD drive is failing and to back it up, and tried to move the iphoto library. It told me it would take 180+ days, and kept going up. I left it up anyway for about a day to see if it would change, and instead it gave an error message, and moved nothing. I can't open the library in iPhoto- it tells me it's on a locked disk. I checked the permissions and it's set to Read & write by me (the admin user) but then under that it says read only for "everyone." I can't get into the library to pull out my pictures, which I cannot afford to lose.
I would appreciate any help or advice on how to crack into my iphoto library on this failing drive to remove the pictures. I read a lot about DiskWarrior but I also read that it won't work on newer macs (anything after June of 2012 supposedly), so I'm wondering if that's true or not, and if not is that a good program to use?
I can't afford to take it to a professional right now, so any help or advice would be so greatly appreciated! Also if anyone then could suggest the best way to back up in two places (digitally and perhaps a better brand of external drive) it would be amazing.
If you need more info let me know!

If you're very lucky, you might be able to salvage the drive mechanism, and the data, by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • HT204350 USB Time Machine backup drive not visble in Mavericks Migration Assistant

    Hi all,
Yesterday I updated my dad's iMac from Snow Leopard (SL) to Mavericks. Seemed to work ok apart from the fact that turning on iCloud wiped out the calendars. In order to get the calendars back I restored from the most recent SL Time Machine backup. This turned out to be a big mistake! It did get the calendars back but stopped all programs not included in the OS X install to stop working!
I then managed to get a bootable flash drive installer for Mavericks sorted out and installed a fresh copy of Mavericks on the computer with the plan of using Migration Assistant to bring all my dad's files, settings, etc over. The problem is that when I open Migration Assistant and try to migrate from the USB Time Machine backup drive, the drive doesn't show up in the list.
I have also tried restoring from the Time Machine backups that were made straight after the upgrade to Mavericks as I have exported copies of the calendars now and that was the only issue at the time but when I do that the restore fails after about 4.5% progress.
Any help would be amazing as my dad runs two small businesses with the computer and the down time causing quite a few issues.
    Thanksin advance!

If you synchronize any of your calendars with a server such as iCloud, disable that synchronization. Quit Calendar.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Calendars
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder selected. Enter Time Machine and restore that folder from the snapshot you want.
Relaunch Calendar and test. Your calendars should be as they were when the snapshot was taken. If you don't sync with a server, stop here. If you do sync some of the calendars with a server, select each one in turn and then select
    File ▹ Export ▹ Export…
from the menu bar. You'll get ICS files with the filename extension ".ics". Re-enable sync. Usually, all the calendars you just restored will be deleted. That's not a problem. Create a new calendar on the server for each one you exported and want to sync:
    File ▹ New Calendar
Then import the calendar from the corresponding ICS file by double-clicking it. Follow the prompts to import the new events to the calendar you just created. For calendars that you don't want to sync, just import them again. They'll appear in the calendar list under On My Mac.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • FIOS router drive as a Time Machine backup drive.

  • Mavericks doesn't mount my Time Machine backup drive

Since I downloaded and installed Mavericks, it can't find my external Time Machine backup drive. Not found by disk utilites - not on my desk top.

I had a similar issue but I think I've solved it (temporarily atleast). You can try this and see if it works for you.
I restarted my MacBook with the external drive still plugged in. Once the system restarted, it ran the file-system check process (i.e. fsck_hfs process under Activity Monitor. If you're wondering what it does or why it utilizes a lot of CPU, here is some information: https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/Darwin/Reference/ManPages/ man8/fsck_hfs.8.html).
It ran the process for about 10 to 15 minutes (probably depends on your external drive size) and then Time Machine recognized the backup and just completed a backup minutes ago.
If you're interested in more information about the make of my MacBook, external drive and the problem I had, continue reading:
I've a 500GB WD My Passport with two partitions: Mac-Journaled partition for Time Machine backups and a FAT-32 partition for other stuff. My computer is a late-2009 white MacBook on which I've been running Mavericks since mid-October.
Yesterday I noticed that though both partitions showed up, the backup partition was orange and not green (which is the color usually) and the backup hadn't started automatically. I manually selected the partition in Time Machine and the backup began.
But today when I connected the external drive, only the FAT-32 partition showed up. The backup partition was not to be found anywhere other than the Disk Utility, where it was greyed out. The Repair Disk/Erase Disk didn't work (even when I did that in the boot screen after using the Command+R). I tried to earse the whole disk and partition it but even that was unsuccessful.
So that's when I restarted my MacBook with the external drive plugged in. My two cents: keep another backup (flash drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, or a good old DVD) of very important information.

  • HT201250 Can I take my time machine backup drive and put in on another iMac

Can I take my time machine backup drive and put in on another iMac

Setting-up a new Mac from an old one, its backups, or a PC

  • Time Machine and drive permissions question

I'm using Time Machine on a MacBook with two admin accounts (let's call them admin1 and admin2). admin2 is the account used daily. admin1 is the account used very infrequently.
Things were set up with admin1. I noticed today when I was logged in as admin2 that TimeMachine reported that the last backup was more than 2 week ago (when things were set up), and that the last backup failed because the user didn't have privileges.
I did a Get Info on the drive, and it seemed to confirm that (admin 1 had read/write privileges, but admin 2 had only read access).
To get around the problem I logged in as admin1 and turned Time Machine off. I then logged in admin 2 and selected the disk from there, and turned Time Machine on.
My question is - is this normal behavior? Or if there's something wrong, how to fix it?
    Thanks...

After a few minutes, an external drive that is mounted on the desktop will spin down--like it should. But...each time a "Save" or "Save As..." dialog box is opened in any application, things will grind to halt for a few seconds while the external drive spins up--even though I will not be saving files to that drive. I've always hated that, which is one reason I've always done manual backups.
Does that happen with Time Machine (either with a drive physically or wirelessly connected via Export Extreme) and is there any way to avoid that?
It happens with TM. I am not sure of any convenient work-arounds. You can of course eject the drive and reattach it when you want to make a backup, but that's a bit inconvenient, IMO.
Is it possible to manually turn on and turn off Time Machine (and the external drive) so as to only do manual backups like I'm doing now? I don't really care about looking up a prior version of file that I've changed. I just want a reasonably current whole-disk backup.
Yes, TM has an on/off switch. Just turn it off until you want a backup. It will simply continue where it left off. It will not create a completely new backup.

I have been using a 500 GB LaCie firewire external drive for my Time Machine backups since March 28, 2008. It has recently come to my attention that this drive is formatted using the Apple Partition Map, rather than the GUID Partition Table, as recommended for Intel Macs. Will this render my backups useless should I need to restore from Time Machine? For the most part, it has worked without incident, except for a strange quirk: some of my backups seem to disappear. The most current backups are always there, as are the earliest. But it seems to purge some of the backups in between, as if the disk were full (however, there are 251 GB available). It also eventually collapses multiple backups done at different times throughout the day into a single backup for that day. I'm not sure how much of this is normal behavior for Time Machine; it was my understanding that nothing was to be purged until the disk was full, and then the earliest were the first to go. As long as I have my most recent backups, I am happy, but I'm not sure they are usable in the Apple Partition Map. Also... in the event I need to erase my LaCie and reformat it, is there any need to backup some of my current Time Machine files (say the first and most recent backups)? I would just burn them to DVD, but that might take awhile. Thanks so much for your help.

    Hello x:
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
I run an Intel-based Mac and have an external LaCie firewire drive that I use for both TM backups and a bootable clone. The drive is formatted Apple Partition Map and the volumes are Mac OS X extended (journaled). I have used the TM backup to retrieve data and I have restored the bootable clone from the external drive. Everything worked well.
In answer to your question, no.
This information is from a knowledge base article:
+Now that Time Machine is setup, you can forget about it until you need to restore files, folders, or even your entire system! Time Machine will continue making automatic backups for every hour of the last 24 hours, every day of the last month, and every week past that until your backup disk is full.+

  • Should my Time Machine backup drive have a disk image on it?

My Macbook Air recently went in for repairs and got a near-total refurbishing (thanks Apple!)—new logic board and new SSD drive. When I went to restore it, it turns out that my network-attached drive (on an AirPort Extreme) was NOT creating a reliable Time Machine backup, and had not been, since last April, even though the Time Machine menu bar tool would regularly report that a Time Machine backup was complete.
Meanwhile, I also had a second, portable drive that I would periodically plug in and run a Time Machine backup on as well; it was more current (early February), so I didn't lose too much work. But Time Machine wouldn't recognize that drive to let me restore from scratch the way that I've done with Time Machine before. I could go in and pull files from it manually, which I did, but how tedious! What I ended up doing was restoring from last April from one drive, then pulling over newer files from the other drive.
Obviously I'd like to avoid this sort of thing in the future. Now, as I'm making some changes to how I do all of this (I bought a new super-small portable drive that will be my main Time Machine backup; I no longer trust network-attached storage to work flawlessly with Time Machine, at least if it's not an Apple Time Capsule), I want to make sure that my backups are reliable.
In the process of all of this, I noticed that the old Time Machine backup (the one on the NAS) had a disk image on it, while the other drive didn't. I've just finished running the first round of Time Machine on the new drive, and there is NO disk image.
Thus, my question: is this disk image required for Time Machine to work the way it is supposed to in a catastrophic loss and restore? And if so, how do I "force" Time Machine to create this image on my new drive?

Would you post a screen shot of the disk images so people can see what you are seeing? Make sure you cover any personal information using Preview. Post the screen shot in a Reply using the camera icon. Copy and paste doesn't work.

  • Time Machine Backup/HDD/FileRecovery question

Ok so lets say hypothetically, my dad put his SS number and as well as other important documents in his mac. I told him to delete it right away and here's the steps I did. (We're just very cautious since someone stole my sisters identity once already)
So here's what I did, backed up his files in a external hard drive, reformatted his hard drive. Then reinstalled Mountain Lion and put back all his pictures, applications and music.
What I want to know is if I make a time machine backup of this new reinstalled like new Mountain Lion, will it also SAVE the old traces of what was in the hard drive?
Like for example, I buy a 1Tb external. I use time machine to back up the whole thing (the Fresh Mountain Lion I just reinstalled) Then smash the old hard drive that had the SS numbers etc. Will Time Machine SAVE the traces of the sensitive data? can they be recovered from the TIME MACHINE back up? Sorry I don't really know about file recovery etc, lets assume one of the best file recovery/hackers gets a hold of that TIME MACHINE backup, will he be able to recover that data?

No. It only copies files currently on the Mac's internal HD.
Going forward, if things are changed or deleted, it will keep copies of the old versions, for some time.  How long varies: depending on the circumstances, it can be as little as 24 hours or until the disk is full and it begins to delete the oldest backups.
But that's only files that have already been backed-up, and there is a way to delete all backups of selected items.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #12 for details.

  • Primary Hard Drive Recognized as a Time Machine Backup Drive

    Hi,
I am having some trouble installing the latest OSX Mavericks due to the installation application erroneously recognizing my primary hard drive being used for Time Machine backups. I have removed my backup drive from Time Machine, removed the backup drive from my laptop altogether, turned off Time Machine in system preferences and restarted numerous times in an attempt to get the OSX Mavericks installer to recognize my primary hard drive.
Is anyone else having this problem? Is there something I am missing?
    Thanks!

As Time Machine deletes files when the drive gets too full (deletes the oldest backup to make room for a new backup), it would depend on which backup your movies are and when they'd get deleted. Once you delete them on your hard drive, they won't be in the newest TM backups either. I'd suggest you copy them to another hard drive or a flash drive/USB stick - of course they'd need to be large enough.

  • Reuse A Time Machine Backup Drive Without Wiping It

I recently wiped my imac and reinstalled ML cause it was really misbehaving. It has been running as smooth as it's ever been so I don't want to restore it from my time machine backup. Now I need to set up another time machine backup but want to use the same drive since I still have so much space on it. Is it possible to use the same drive without erasing it and prevent time machine from erasing the last backup when the disk gets full?
    Thanks

  • Change Time Machine backup drive

Hello...I've been using Time Machine for about a year or so, and recently purchased a larger drive for backups. I know how to designate which drive is used for Time Machine, but is there someone way to migrate the existing Time Machine data from my old designated drive to the new drive in other words, if I switch to the new drive as my Time Machine backup, do I have to lose all my existing backups on the old drive (I would like to repurpose the old drive)?
    Thanks!

you can clone your old TM drive to the new one using Superduper or the restore tab in Disk utility. then when you set the new drive to be the TM drive in TM system preferences, TM will continue the existing backup sequence.
