Stop firefox from pausing a tab when going to another tab or window

I am running firefox v5.0 and I have noticed that ever since v4 when I open another tab, the other tabs are paused and when I have an upload (ie: a video to youtube) going in another tab and I want to browse the internet using a new tab/window, it is stopped. I tried looking through about:config but I couldnt find any thing to disable firefox from pausing tabs.

I uninstalled Viewpoint Media Player, which fixed my problem with the plugincheck tab always opening. Viewpoint Media Player is responsible for the plugin called "MetaStream 3 Plugin r4", and I believe this plugin is triggering Firefox to open the plugincheck page. It is not enough to disable the plugin, it must be uninstalled.
Since it seems you don't have the "MetaStream 3 Plugin", it may be that some other plugin is causing the plugincheck tab to pop open. Try going to Tools (menu) -> Add-ons -> Plugins. Look through the list of plugins, and see if any of them have a red warning icon next to them. If one of the plugins has a red warning icon, it may be the plugin responsible for triggering the opening of the tab. Try uninstalling that plugin, or updating it to a newer version.

Try to delete or rename/move the prefs.js file and other possible prefs-##.js with a number and user.js files in the Firefox Profile Folder.
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

Make sure that Firefox isn't running when you delete files in the profile folder.

• How to stop firefox from opening new tab when opening a pdf that is previously saved on my desktop?

PC Windows 7 Pro 32 bit
I have previously saved PDF files on my desktop. When I open the PDF, firefox sees fit to open a new tab even though I do not have the browser open. This is annoying because after I close the PDF I then have to close the New Tab browser window as well. This costs me a lot of productivity time as I open a lot of PDF's for work. The PDF file use to show the Adobe logo on the file on desktop. Once I installed firefox it now shows the firefox logo?
I have already set PDF's to open with Adobe as default through Menu-Options-Applications

Hello,
In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
#Go to Tools > Options (or Firefox > Options).
#In the Options window, select the Applications tab.
#In the Search field, type PDF. You should find Portable Document Format (PDF).
#On the right handside you should find an Action column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose Preview in Firefox.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
Thank you.

• How can i stop firefox from trying to exit, when i just want to close a tab, using my custom button on my mouse?

I use the Microsoft intellimouse explorer 3.0 since many ears. Ever since i started using firefox i set the small thumb button to the action "close" in the mouse settings. This worked fine with firefox 3.x, it closed the tab i was reading. In firefox 4.0 it kills the whole firefox. How can i change it back?

• How do i stop firefox from blocking my taskbar when downloading?

Every time I download anything using Firefox, the downloads dialogue box blocks use of both my popup taskbar or the side to side scroll bar making me clear the downloads list EVERY TIME I do a download. I hate that the previous version of Firefox did this, and see that no one has bothered to fix this annoying glitch in the new version. It's maddening trying to save large pics as you can't see them until you clear the downloads list.

The downloads manager is a regular dialog box, unlike the door hanger variety, so you can put it wherever you want it. You can resize it, and the resizing should stick on subsequent usage. You can toggle it on or off anytime with "Ctrl+J", and you have some control when it appears automatically or closes automatically.
Tools > Options > General > (Downloads section)...
If you are still using the "Firefox" button introduced in Firefox 4
"Firefox" button > Options (2nd column) > Options > (Downloads section)...
Mine is set as follows
[x] Show the Downloads window when downloading a file
[_] Close it when all downloads are finished
I'm on high speed access so if I download something, I'm probably waiting for it so don't mind the window.

• Stop Firefox from starting a new tab when a new window opens?

This might be answered, but I cannot find a solution. I will give a scenario for my issue.
I am on the UPS website and click a button to print a shipping label. This opens a new FireFox window, BUT... the new window defaults to a generic tab that ALWAYS opens in circumstances like this. It does NOT open to the tab with my label. The print menu opens, but I cannot switch to the tab with my shipping label. No right click to print either. So I have to go to another browser. Absolutely annoying.
So how can I STOP Firefox from starting this generic tab when a FireFox window opens? BTW, the tab has a search bar at the top and several boxes that I can click on for Facebook, Instagram, etc. Thanks!

Start Firefox in <u>Safe Mode</u> to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem.
*Switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window

• How can I stop firefox from opening hundreds of tabs when I click on an embedded email link?

Every time I forget and click on an embedded email link, firefox tries to open multiple tabs(sometimes hundreds). I can't shut down firefox when this happens, I can't do anything else. I have to manually shut down the computer and reboot.

Check to make sure that mailto has not been set to open Firefox.
To do that open the Preferences dialog by selecting "Firefox > Preferences". In the Preferences dialog go to the Applications panel. In the "Content Type" column locate mailto, and make sure the Action column is not set to "Use Firefox" This procedure is explained in more depth in the Managing file types article.

You can have infinite tabs opening if you have selected Firefox as the application to handle a file if you get an Open with download window.<br />
Firefox should not be selected as the application to handle a file and you have to remove the action that is associated with that file type.<br />
You can delete mimeTypes.rdf in the Profile Folder to reset all actions or set the offending action in Tools > Options > Applications to 'Always Ask'<br />

• How do I stop Firefox from crashing? It crashes at various times, not when loading any specific pages.

My crash problem has been going on for week, now. I tried uninstalling FF and reinstalling it. I hoped that would fix the problem, but it didn't. Crashes occur randomly, when loading or reloading pages but they are NOT specific pages. The Report ID listed below is just 1 of several reports from the past week.

I am unwilling to attempt navigation away from these sites. The pop-ups that occur on the attempt to leave a site or to close the browser are exit traps offering incentive to stay.
Once upon a time, when the internet was less dangerous, I would be willing to close the exit pop-ups. Now, after twice being infected with malware trying to close the pop-ups, I now force close whichever browser I am using.
Recently, I clicked on the red X to close one pop-up, and it installed a trojan that I had to pay to be removed. When I clicked on 'Leave' in another exit pop, it didn't exit and it turned out I was giving permission to run a script file. Now that criminals have learned these exit pop-ups can be used to force a click action, the sites using them have become dangerous.
If I force the browser to close using Task manager, Please tell me how to stop FireFox from sending me directly back to the same site because it mistakenly believes it crashed when it did not. I forced it to close because I was on a site that had taken control of my browser and was not allowing me to leave the site.
No other browser sends me back to the potentially dangerous sites. I prefer Firefox, but the new version must have a setting that allows me to get safely away from a problem site?

• How do I stop Firefox from going to Google everytime I open the browser?

In my organization, we have well over 2,000 PCs. Every time Firefox is open, it connects to Google IPs (74.125.x.x) even when we are not on Google's site and do not have Google as the search provider. From what I understand (and correct me if I am wrong), Firefox links to Google for anti-phishing/anti-malware lists. The problem I have is with over 2,000 PCs going thru our web filter, it is bogging down our web filter with these connections.
Is there any way to stop Firefox from making these connections to Google (74.125.x.x)?

First update your firefox to 24.0 from Mozilla.org.
Second In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter. The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear.
# Click I'll be careful, I promise!, to continue to the about:config page.
Search the string "browser.startup.homepage",double click on it and change the value. Then press OK and restart firefox
