Stop forcing software on us

I'm going to add to the long list of users who are in outrage on your decision to force software on users.
There's no reason why we should be forced to use this new ui. Skype just keeps on digging this hole it seems, over and over. This isn't the first time I've been upset about this it's just the first time I've decided to post anything about it.
The "auto-upgrades" (auto-downgrades) are intrusive and need to end immediately.
Making the UI look more fancy and removing the functionality of the software isn't making people happy, it's driving them crazy. Even if I lower the font size to the lowest setting in this new version 7 of Skype, it's still too hard to fit enough text on the screen in the chat window. This is because these gigantic emoticons appear along with the avatar of the user in every single chat message and a gigantic chat bubble. You're making higher resolutions pretty pointless. This is a step backwards, not forwards. Let's just force all Windows users to use 800x600 while you're at it Microsoft.
Even if I deny the update with firewall your software still updates somehow, that's classified as a virus. It's downloading and installing things without my permission and WITH my explicitly chosen "no" answer to the software. I also find it very funny that you are suggesting we enable automatic updates to keep Skype updated yet it will automatically update regardless of that setting. Also not the first person to notice that, but still have to mention it with my rant.
This is rediculous, not to mention that you are restricting people from even using it because you release Skype when it isn't ready to go public yet and alot of people have major issues where they can't even get into their accounts (luckily that wasn't me).
Today when I woke up you had booted me off Skype. I had tried your new version 7 when everyone kept telling me about the updated Skype version. It was terrible, I've already had to adjust to the previous changes you've made to the software that make it less user-friendly but this just crosses the line. The thing you've done with the contacts and chat that make it as if we are using 800x600 resolution is just TOO MUCH. So when I come to my PC after waking up today I see that it says "can't connect to Skype". I continued to get this error and logged in fine on my Android device (more on that later) and on the Skype.com website. I tried other versions and they said my password was incorrect. Huh? I just checked and it was working fine. So I checked again and it worked fine but I decided to change my password anyways to see if that fixes the obvious bug. Now I was able to sign in but the software automatically downgrades to version 7 from version 6.x.
Now onto the Android topic. You made it impossible to sign in with any other clients to Skype and have essentially wasted my money on an app I thought was pretty good and handled Skype much better than the official app. Why don't you stop trying to take everything over, can't it be enough people are registering accounts and using your services for chatting. It's not hurting anyone if we want functionality in our chat clients.
For future reference, for those people who don't know which verison I'm talking about... When skype started looking like this is what I'm mostly referring to in this rant:

  • Stop forcing upgrades

I have been forced, by repeated interruptions to my work telling me that software had been downloaded, to upgrade Adobe Reader through two steps, first to 9.3.1 then to 9.3.2. This is a pure pain because I do not use Reader, having switched to Preview precisely because I was fed up with the constant "upgrades". In this case I was forced to use Reader by a customized document I was sent to review. The "upgrades", first to 9.3.1 then to 9.3.2, continually interrupted my work until I gave in a tried to install them. 9.3.2 crashed my Macbook twice refusing even to allow a soft restart or shutdown. Finally I was forced to navigate through the Adobe website to find and install the "upgrade". It cost me more than an hour, lost concentration to say nothing of the anger and frustration. Why are you wasting users time and sending out stuff that does not work (just look for this forum to see how much unnecessary grief this is causing people). Just STOP doing this: ONLY send small upgrades when security issues make it unavoidable. Otherwise offer upgrades and give good reasons why users should choose them. I don't care whether you publish this on your forum; I just want you to know that this kind of behavior convinces users to abandon your products as I did. WHY do you do it?

    Thanks for your kind suggestion.

  • How can I stop the software updater pop ups advising me to update to 11.0.03?

Can anyone help with how to stop the software updater pop ups advising me to update to Reader 11.0.03? My antivirus advises the link in the pop up is unsafe, so I went to the Adobe website to update from Reader 9. The website doesn't offer X1, but did offer X, so I updated to 10.1.7.
Why is the site not offering a download for X1?
Even though I have updated to X I am still getting the pop ups for X1. I have attached a screen shot of the pop up - is this legitimate or some kind of scam carrying a virus?
    Thanks.

There are literally thousands of sites with videos (linked to from yet thousands more) that will prompt you to "upgrade" or update your already updated Flash Player. This is the most common method of delivery for malware like that.
A friend who runs a PC Repair business told me that if you've updated your Flash Player and you see a warning in a web page that you need to download an update to watch a video, it's an attack site.
A simple gesture of holding your mouse over the warning or link, will indicate the address it points to. If it DOESN'T say Adobe anywhere in the beginning of the address (download.adobe.com, or adobe.com/downloads), it's a forgery, and you should leave that page immedaitely. If you download and install whatever they link you to, it may play the content you were looking for, but you've just been infected with something that may lay dormant for months and then suddenly take over your whole system.
If you use your PC for work, you're really in trouble.

  • STOP VERIZON SOFTWARE UPDATE POP UP

I want to turn off these stupid Verizon Software update pop ups. I have NO intention of allowing Verizon to put more crap on my phone that I don't want and definitely have no intentions of allowing them to remove things I put on the phone I PAID FULL PRICE FOR, off because they don't want them on there. I've heard nothing good about this latest update, and of course, Verizon has no real customer support so I have to turn to the community here to help me. So, if you can tell me how to turn off the notifications or stop the automatic updating, that would be great. If I have to root my phone, I'm okay with that, I just need to know how.
    Thanks!

The Settings > General > Software Update option only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, if you have iOS 4 as your tagline suggests then you can only do the update via your computer's iTunes (you will need the latest version of iTunes installed on your computer).
To update, connect the iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. You may also want to copy photos and any important documents off the iPad as well e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case. You can then force a backup of the iPad via File > Devices > Back Up.
Then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand sidebar (you can enable the sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac, control-S on a PC), and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button
    Updating to iOS 5+ : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4972
You can only update a device to the highest iOS version that it supports, which for an iPad 2 is iOS 7.0.6

  • Stop forcing us to reset the look of firefox every time you update something

How about dang well not changing everything when you update this thing? Just updated and had all my toolbars get screwed up. It's sad that I have to take up even more space on my hard drive to get an ADDON to make Firefox work the way it already should. Tell us what you are changing so we can decide if we want to update or not. If you are changing the look of the browser, please allow for us to NOT do that and keep our look. It is a pain in the neck to have to hunt down all the settings to change to get this thing to live up to MY VISION of the web. No, this is not exactly a question but a pleading suggestion to not make us want to go to another browser when firefox works great until you update it and I have to spend a week trying to fix it.

    This also affects me.
Like most people, I don't keep abreast of Firefox developments. I simply use it as a web browser. I had no idea a new version was about to be released, or that by default the software was set to upgrade automatically. Had I known (especially about the drastic, forced aesthetic changes in v29), I would have disabled the automatic update.
It doesn't seem like it should be that hard to include an option at some point to keep the old look and customizations while updating. I know that isn't likely to happen - although it seems like common sense, so I couldn't say why - but I found it frustrating enough to create an account and post this, following time spent and add-ons configured, just to get the browser back to what I had yesterday. I would just install the old version instead, but I have no idea whether it would keep my history, saved passwords, and so forth, and I do want to take advantage of any security and basic functionality improvements the new version might offer.
For some people, I guess the new look is an improvement. I don't see it, though, and I doubt I'm alone in that. For me, this is an unwanted and unnecessary frustration that showed up out of nowhere.
I feel like this is an issue that comes up again and again with different product lines (Windows 8 for a blatant example), where the company forces their aesthetic choices on the user. It seems like it would be easy to provide a "classic" theme option (since third-party developers do this as soon as the new version comes out, and frustration begins to mount), but that doesn't happen, and users end up implementing work-arounds just to get back what they had in the first place.
Especially in this case - since the buttons map to the same functions and so forth; it really is just a different aesthetic - I don't know why Mozilla can't be a little more accommodating to the substantial subset of users who would rather keep the old look. I know there are add-ons and extensions that would still be incompatible with the update, but what I'm talking about should be possible without resorting to work-arounds.
I feel like you sort of brushed off the last poster. I want to draw attention to one of your lines:
'''I believe there has been enough communication regarding the changes in FF29. There is always the option not to upgrade automatically.'''
That's what they said when they knocked down Arthur Dent's house. If you're not going to provide the options I've been talking about, a little notice to those of us who don't follow developer blogs or drop by the Firefox website regularly would be appreciated. At the very least, something like a "Version X downloaded - install now?" prompt should be the default for major changes like this one.

  • "Unexpected Error" stops all software updates, except for non-mac downloads

    Hello,
first of all i have tried to find answers to the question i have by searching through the forums. I searched for a couple days, but i have not found any answers as of yet.
When i go to download anything from software update the download will complete and as it is being installed it will stop and say that "the update 'blah-blah-blah' cant be installed - sorry, an unexpected error occurred."
it then says that what was downloaded was moved to the trash and so on.
i have downloaded a couple updates by themselves manually and they will go all the way till the actual installization and then stop and say there was an error.
i am fairly new to macs and i really have no idea whats going on. i have downloaded various programs, such as AIM, and videos and they all worked fine.
if any one could help it would greatly be appreciated.
thank you very much for your time.
    Jon
mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    Try the following:
Boot from your OS X Installer. Be sure to use the installer for the version of OS X you have installed. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (or Utilities menu if using Tiger.) After DU loads select your OS X volume from the list on the left, click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (3.0.3 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.1.1 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Stop FORCING Google Chrome on update!!!

    This option should be UNCHECKED!!!
If I want Software or other 3rd party content, I'll fetch it myself!!!
Chrome does not uninstall properly and screws up my system if I forget to uncheck the dag box. I have to manually edit the registry to get my system back to the way I like it.
It really picks me off when companies (especially big ones like yours) do this to their installers and updates!!!!

    @ Pat,
Thanks Pat, I guess my last comment did sound as if I was directing it at Claudio and Graffiti, that was not intentional. I realize that they are fellow users who had just replied to my post.
@ Claudio and Graffiti Sorry guys!!!
My comment is however directed at Adobe. A huge corporation that puts the voice of its customers on the back burner. They should know better. Not everyone is computer literate and do not see the dag check boxes to this potentially system dangerous program. Then again I guess this is Adobe's way of giving back to the computer tech services at the local computer repair shops. Forcing the average Joe User in to the shop for repairs to their computer because IE browser doesn't work anymore, or they can't link off an email.
I am fairly competent around the keyboard and I know that on a couple of occasions I was half way through an update when I realized I had forgot to uncheck the dag box and my wife, she just accepts updates for anything loaded on her machine, so I am constantly repairing her machine's registry.
No program should be forced by any corporation unless it is absolutely required to run the product being updated. Then there should be a warning in BIG BOLD letters saying that the other program is required and an accept button implemented. (imho)
Again, apologizes to Claudio and Graffiti. If I have offended you with my comment, it was not intended to be directed as rebuttal to your comments. It was a thought posted out loud at the giant.

I find it presumptuous of Apple to disable Flash and force me to update it. This is my computer, believe it or not. Apple should not be allowed to take away my control.
Now, how do I stop them from doing this? Is there some hack or hidden setting that I can change?
Message was edited by: temhawk (added screenshot for reference)

What I do is use the Click2Flash extension for Safari so that if there is Flash on the page, it is not enabled unless I say so. If Flash is not enabled, it won't bother me about updates. I am only asked to update Flash if I actually let Flash run on a particular page.
On sites like YouTube, the use of Click2Flash means I can go ahead and still watch videos using whatever alternative player they have like an HTML5 player. I don't have to deal with Flash, or Flash update notices, on those sites. On all other sites, using Click2Flash means I won't get bugged about a Flash update just because some random ad uses Flash.
