Stop icon from re appearing on desktop

Anyone know how to stop the Firefox icon from reappearing on my desktop? Every time I delete it, it comes back. I try to keep everything in my taskbar. Thanks!

Very odd. Right-click on the Firefox icon on your desktop and check the properties for any clues, such as General info, the file details and Shortcut target, then post back.
You could also download a fresh new copy of the Firefox installer file "Firefox Setup 10.0.2.exe" from http://www.mozilla.org/firefox/new and save it to your desktop. Next, uninstall Firefox from the Windows Control Panel Add or Remove Programs list, to see if that gets rid of the Firefox icon. (When you uninstall Firefox, it will not remove your bookmarks or other user data and settings as long as you don't check that option.) Ref: [[Uninstalling Firefox]]
You can then reinstall Firefox by running the setup file you downloaded. Ref: [[Installing Firefox on Windows]]

Yes....It happens all the time. I also erased my HD and installed Snow Leopard but with no success. Tried lots of REBOOTING but nothing worked for me.As I have already installed the new OSX I think there is no need to go through the below procedure. What do you suggest?
Before you go through the ritual of reinstalling the entire system just try to do a "factory reset" of your bluetooth environment. To do this you need to run the Bluetooth Explorer which is a utility installed as part of XCode.
    1. Launch Bluetooth Explorer.
    2. Select the "Modify Software & Device Configuration" from the Utilities menu.
    3. Keep the first 4 checkboxes checked (one will say "Full factory reset").
    4. Click "Perform actions" button (lower right of window).
    5. Reboot (possibly the Reboot NOW button will work, if not just do a normal reboot).
Hopefully that will clear your problem(s) so you can re-pair your bluetooth devices.
    Good luck.

  • Firewire icon does not appear on desktop

My Firewire is connected and turned on but it's icon does not appear on desktop. I ran disk utility and the drive's icon appears there. I can run repair tests on it but not a permissions test. When I checked "Get Info" I noticed a line that reads "OWNER ENABLED: NO". What Can I do--I have a lot of important files on the drive and need to access them. I have also run 3rd party disk utilities that say the firewire drive and all files are 'ok' but still I am not able to access it in any way.

If disk utility sees the drive then you should be able to choose it from the list and click "Activate" (or "Mount" or whatever it says in English )

  • Iphone icon does not appear on desktop

iphone icon does not appear on desktop when plugged into my mac, so I can't select it to manage music via the sync method.

Lyssa - Thank you for your response. I thought that might be the case, but although there is a symbol in the upper right corner that reads "iPhone"  the list of music is my entire iTunes list. I would like to update my music on the phone but can't seem to "see" what is currently there when plugged into my iMac. It all used to be so much easier and user friendly.

  • Time Capsule Icon No Longer Appears on Desktop

Two weeks ago I had AT&T U-verse cable, internet, & phone installed. As part of that installation they installed an AT&T router/wireless combination. The ethernet cable that was previously connected to Time Capsule is now connected to the AT&T device. There is no longer any ethernet connection to Time Capsule. The Time Capsule icon still appeared on my desktop and I manually performed back-ups from my Windows applications to Time Capsule. Time Capsule went from displaying a constant green light to displaying a flashing yellow light. That worked for several days. After about a week of that there appeared on my screen a 'wizard' of some sort recognizing the status of Time Capsule. It said this 'wizard' would eliminate the flashing yellow light. I followed the steps through the 'wizard' and at one point the flashing yellow light turned to constant green. There were a few more steps in the 'wizard' and when it was finished the flashing yellow light reappeared. The next time I tried saving files from Windows I could not connect to my w: drive, and the Time Capsule icon no longer appeared on my Mac desktop. I went into Airport Utilities and there is a box checked that should display the icon properly. Any ideas what's happening? How do I restore Time Capsule so I can back-up my files. Thank you.

    Welcome to the discussions!
I don't have 10.6.1 yet, but have noticed this happens very occasionally on my MacBook Pro, but not on my iMac. Simply resetting Time Machine on my laptop has done the trick.
    Open System Preferences
    Click on Time Machine
Click your Time Capsule to highlight it
    Click Use for Backups
If that does not do it then delete the "com.apple.TimeMachine.plist" file. It's located as follows:
Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences
    Restart your computer
Then perform the same steps as above to setup Time Machine again.
The resets will not affect any of your backups.

  • Stop icons from appearing

Each and every time a file or document is opened with a program, an icon is placed on my display.
How do I stop this? Removing the icon seems to delete the file.

hello owenvb, please go to ''firefox > addons > extensions'' and remove Object Browser(which is likely malicious) and the yahoo toolbar if you suspect that it is injecting those icons...

  • Disk icon does not appear on Desktop, nor in Finder

    I have 4 disk drives:
    2 internal
1 external (FireWire) divided into 2 partitions
Only 3 of 4 drive icons appear on my desktop or in the Finder.
I have this info from Terminal:
    <pre>DavePowerMac1800:/ davebarnes$ ls -aol /Volumes
    total 16
    drwxrwxrwt 7 root admin - 238 Feb 22 17:34 .
    drwxrwxr-t 39 root admin - 1428 Feb 22 17:34 ..
    -rwx------ 1 davebarn admin - 82 Aug 18 2005 ._MARKETINGTACTIC;DAVE1833
    drwxr-xr-x 19 davebarn davebarn - 748 Oct 3 21:57 Daves_280GB
    lrwxr-xr-x 1 root admin - 1 Feb 22 17:34 Daves_80GB -> /
    drwxr-xr-x 19 davebarn davebarn - 680 Jan 21 09:54 DavesGTech173GB
    drwxrwxr-t 34 root admin - 1258 Feb 22 14:30 GTechBootable60GB</pre>
The missing icon belongs to DavesGTech173GB.
As a side note, Path Finder (from CocoaTech) has no trouble finding this drive.
Disk Utility finds the drive and returns this from Verify:
    <pre>Verifying volume “DavesGTech173GB”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
The volume DavesGTech173GB appears to be OK.
    Mounting Disk
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume passed verification</pre>
So, how do I get my icon back onto the desktop?
    thanks,
    dave

Not sure I have a "magic answer" but from what you've said, and the fact that it does open just fine with the "open" command, my guess is that the invisible bit for the drive has mysteriously been set. It is there, there is nothing wrong with it, it has mounted just fine. It is just invisible to the Finder. Don't remember seeing a volume with the invisible bit set before, but I have seen many other things, including one poor guy's Applications folder.
There are several ways to fix it, if that is indeed the case. The one I'm most familiar with involves using the Terminal, and the Developer Tools GetFileInfo and SetFile commands. If you don't have them, you can download them here:
    http://homepage.mac.com/francines/.Public/setgetfile.zip
Unzip and either put the two commands somewhere in your PATH or, if you don't know how to do that, you can just drag and drop the command into the Terminal. So if you did that, you would do something like this:
    DavePowerMac1800:/ davebarnes$ /Users/davebarnes/Desktop/setgetfile/GetFileInfo /Volumes/DavesGTech173GB/
Hit return and see what the Terminal reports. I have the commands in my PATH, so when I run the command on a partition I have named OXey, I get this:
    -bash:~francine$ GetFileInfo /Volumes/OXey/
    directory: "/Volumes/OXey/"
    attributes: aVbstClinmed
    created: 08/05/2006 20:08:50
    modified: 02/17/2007 12:00:10
The part you are interested in is the attributes. You'll see the second one is an upper case "V"--meaning it is invisible (I made it invisible for the purposes of this demonstration). To bring it back into view you use the SetFile command, with the attribute option and a lower case "v" to unset the invisible bit:
    -bash:~francine$ SetFile -a v /Volumes/OXey/
or yours would be something like this (again presuming SetFile isn't in your PATH, but was downloaded and unzipped on the Desktop):
    DavePowerMac1800:/ davebarnes$ /Users/davebarnes/Desktop/setgetfile/SetFile -a v /Volumes/DavesGTech173GB/
You'll need to relaunch the Finder or log out and back in to see the change.
Of course, if the invisible bit hasn't been set, and GetFileInfo shows the normal lower case v to start with, then this definitely is not the magic answer!

  • Stop messages from automatically appearing when I log onto my iMac

How do I stop my text & iMessages to stop appearing on my iMac when logging in?

sometimes these applications will have a setting in the preferences to not open on login of computer. If you see none of that, you can go into:
system preferences> Users & Groups > Select your user>Login Items.
unlock the settings by hitting the lock icon on the bottom left of the window then youll be able to uncheck these things from opening when you log in.
Hope this is helpful or answers the question.

  • Icons do not appear on desktop

When I boot my computer only the Windows four colors appear.
No images on the bottom either. I have tried "view" and "show icons" but it doesn't work
I do not know what I am doing wrong because sometimes the icons appear after re-booting

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
    <b> To Enable SafeMode </b>
*You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
*''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.
Close and restart Firefox after each change via "Firefox > Exit" (Windows: Firefox/File > Exit; Mac: "Firefox > Quit Firefox"; Linux: "Firefox/File > Quit")

  • External hard drive icon won't appear on desktop

Apparently spontaneously (has worked fine in the past!) I cannot get a desktop icon for my La Cie external hard drive to appear. I can see the hard drive in Desktop Utility and can eject it through there but the verify and repair options aren't highlighted.

I hear it spinning- I think?
That may not be so good because it suggests the power is getting to it and it is something else more critical to the functioning of the drive that is wrong. If it is the enclosure you could try moving it out of the enclosure into a different one, or into the computer.
I just used Disk Warrior to rebuild the directory- no luck.
Ah, so did Diskwarrior see the drive? I didn't think you could see the drive in Disk Utility.
I also replaced the firewire Cable- no luck.
Good try but the flashing blue light suggested something else to me.
I'm now doing to bring it to a local Computer Store to try to retrieve the information.
Try using an application such as [Data Rescue II|http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php] or [FileSalvage|http://subrosasoft.com/OSXSoftware/index.php?mainpage=product_info&productsid=1]. Both have free trial versions that let you see if the software will help before you decide to buy. You will also need a second hard drive equal to or larger in size than your first drive.
I wrote to Lacie- but they are so slow in responding- it will be days.
    Ummmm....

  • Internal HD icon won't appear on desktop

I have an external HD which is my boot disk as the iMac internal HD has become defective. I can boot OS 10.3.9 from the external HD and access all files from both the internal HD and external HD. However, when I start up using OS 9.2.2 from the external HD I do not get the internal HD on the desktop and I can not find the internal HD files. What can I do to access the internal HD files when using OS 9.2.2 booted from the external HD? I can not boot either OS from the iMac internal HD.

From Mac OS X, open the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder and select the drive in the list on the left. Click the Info button at the top of the window and check to see if Mac OS 9 drivers are installed; if not, copy everything you want to keep onto the external drive, and then use the Disk Utility to erase it with the option to include those drivers checked.

  • Stop Icon over bars on my desktop for router

I have a circle with a line thru it over the bars icon on my task bar.  The network is working fine but I still have this icon over the bars.  Why is it there and how do I get rid of it?

The Icon (LELA) is showing that you are connected by a cable between your computer and your router.  If you were connected wirelessly, the red circle would disappear.

  • CD icon does not appear on desktop

When I insert a blank CD disk or one where I have stored photos, etc. into my laptop, it starts up and within a few seconds is ejected. Are there some settings I need to attend to so that my computer accepts a CD? +I did receive a reply as follows:+ Click your Desktop one time so you see Finder top left side of the menu bar. Now from that menu bar click Finder / Preferences. Select the General tab. Make sure: "CDs" is selected.
That still does not work. *I need additional assistance so I can use my CD Drive and so it will show up on the desktop.* Jeremy

check out [this|http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2801] support article first, and try _*resetting the System Management Controller SMC*_ as suggested.
fortunately, i never had to resort to a cleaning disc, so can't really recommend anything. however, i found a post by somewhitechick1 in [this|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2582425] discussion.
