Stop macbook sleeping when shut.

Hi ive searched around but have not found an answer. Does anyone know if there is a way to stop the macbook automatically sleeping when the lid is shut.
Cheers
Dom

Like you, I wanted to be able to close my Mac's lid and have it keep running but I also didn't want to install low level software that might cause unforseen problems immediately or down the road. I found a solution on the internet where it explained you can interfere with the magnetic switch that triggers sleep. All you need is a flat piece of steel. I was able to make a square piece about 30mm on a side that I covered on both sides with felt. If you place it on the palm rest near the edge above the Kensington security slot, it will block the magnetic switch sensor and the Mac keeps running with the lid closed. Not for everyone, but I thought I would add this suggestion to the pile.

  • Macbook sleeps when closed

Hello guys. I recently bought a macbook because I knew they were great computers and worth the money. This one is about a year old. I understand that from the internet and observations, the computer goes to sleep when the lid is shut. I'm aware that the macbook gets very warm when hot. But when I wanna transfer it to a different room in my house, its a pain to have to shut it down for 2 minutes. Is there any way to stop it from doing that???

    Hi Zach!
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
I don't quite understand what you're asking. When you close the lid, the computer will automatically sleep. The only way this won't happen is if the machine is hooked up to an external monitor. You can move the machine somewhere else while it's on, as well as in sleep. Shutting down the machine to relocate it does not require you to turn it off and you can simply unplug the power adapter, relocate it and then plug it back in. Hope this helps.

  • MBP won't sleep when shutting lid

For about a week now, my Macbook Pro won't go to sleep when I close it.--It stays running, and gets hot.
However, using the power button to put it to sleep or choosing sleep from the Apple menu works fine.
    Any suggestions?

This issue has been covered extensively in Macfixit.
I would make sure though that you aren't running any applications in the background or have any third party peripherals connected when you close the lid. Make sure also the Energy Saver System Preferences Options has Wake from Sleep for administrative access unchecked. It is found in your Apple menu -> System Preferences.
If you find that you aren't able to stop it from happening, make sure your firmware version gets up to date, and your hardware test tests fine:

  • Mac won't sleep when shut

Hey, I just noticed today that my computer is no longer going to sleep when I shut the screen, so the Apple light stays on and presumably power is still being used. When I open it up, the screen is right where I left it, already on, not waking up from a black screen. Is this a magnet problem or a setting issue? Is it resolvable?? Thanks!

I'm guessing from the lack of replies that this is a problem best solved with a trek to the Genius Bar....ah well.

  • Macbook sleeping when powered on

    Hi
I have been noticing of late when my Macbook has been shutdown for a day or so, when I first power it up the sleep indicator light is lit and I have to press a button on the keyboard for it to start up. I am 100% sure the Macbook is shutdown and off before I close the lid so I am not sure why this is happening. Anyone else experienced this? This may have started occurring since installing the 10.4.7 update but may be just a coincidence.
    Macbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

it's normal. mine is the same when I turn on macbook, sleep light is lit little bit. then disappeared. it's probably recognized by system everytime restart. don't worry.

  • Macbook sleeps when cold

I have a unibody macbook that, ever since i bought it, goes to sleep when its cold. The screen goes black, and the SIL lights on (indicating sleep/standby mode), the screen will flicker once in a while, also done by pressing a random key. Until it has heated up a little, then it works again. Plugging in, or out and then in the magsafe makes it flicker or turn on permanently again. Could someone please help me. My friend's MBP unibody doesn't seem to have that problem, even when at the same temperature.

Interesting. Okay, while the battery may need replacing at some point, it seems to be okay right now. (443 cycles is a lot of cycles for a battery.) My thought was power related, due to the occasional fix of jiggling the magsafe connection.
50F (10C) is well within operating temps. (Cooler than I like in a room, but okay for the Mac.)
Lyssa--I'm wondering if there's an issue with something on the motherboard; an occasional jolt of power "reviving" the unit does not sound healthy to me. I am not sure it's an SMC issue. I'm hoping your thoughts are better than mine; I'll be interested in seeing how this pans out.

  • MacBook Pro won't sleep when shut

I body slammed my computer and cracked the screen. I bought a new, 3rd-party screen and had a friend install it. Now when I close the lid it won't fall asleep, and I must select sleep from the menu. Also, when it is asleep, the heartbeat is dimmer than usual. Tried resetting SMC, no luck.

    I'd guess:
    a) The magnetic sensor was left out or not aligned properly so it's not getting the 'lid closed' trigger
    b) The lamp was replaced out of alignment so isn't directly in position to glow correctly

  • Macbook sleeping when screen open and wakes on close

I just repalced a busted screen on my Macbook 13"(white late early 2008) after it had falledn and broken the lcd screen.   Everything went fine and the parts all went back together perfectly and without any uncertainty with teh exception of the small magnet in the left side of the screen frame.
Now wehn I power on the Macbook the screen turns on for about three seconds then goes black. At first I thought it was not booting at all but after I walked away and came back to play with it I found that it finished booting up when the screen was closed. When I opened the screen I saw the desktop for a few seconds then the screen goes to sleep.  I can repeat this over and over all day long.
It looks like it is asleep when the screen is open but wakes up when the screen closes.  I know there is a Reed switch that controls this.  I moved the little magnet back and froth several times and any time it approaches the right area of the logic board the screen wakes up for a few seconds then goes black again.
Is there a reset that can be done to try and knock it out of this backwards mode?  (I have tried Command, Option, P, R while booting but no success)
Is it plssible that I am just holding the magenet in the incorrect orientation?  (I've tried turning it a few different ways)
Is it possible that the fall caused something to be damaged other than the screen?  (can't imagine a Reed switch going bad due to being bumped)
Any advice would be great.  Thanks!
    Doug

  • Macbook sleeps when turned on

I was using my MacBook today just checking out some websites and stuff when all of a sudden my computer went to sleep. I clicked using both the trackpad and a mouse that I like to use with it in an attempt to wake it up. I pushed some keys on the keyboard in another attempt to wake it up. I turned it off. Nothing. Turned it back on and it would just turn on but as soon as it turns on, the computer screen is black and the sleep indicator beside the IR sensor turns on. I have no idea what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Im not sure which operating system I have but I bought the MacBook back in August if that helps at all.

You might want to read this article as a possible cause. You may have to boot in Safe Mode (Shift key down through boot) to get past the immediate sleep issue, then install the updates.

  • MacBook sleeps when iPhone dropped on it? o_O

Okay... I have a very weird predicament here. I don't think it's anything harmful, but this has been getting very, very weird.
This happened twice now, but everytime I accidently drop my iphone on the bottom right corner of my laptop (under the keyboard, to the side of the trackpad), my macbook would always enter sleep mode like super fast for like 2 seconds (like my bluetooth speaker gets disconnected), and then the computer would go back to un-sleep mode. It's just so weird and I thought it was just accidental the last time my iPhone (when I still had the 4), was dropped on that corner. This time, even with my iPhone 5c, it did it again! Should I get this checked out? I have a MacBook (late 2009, aluminum).

there is something going on between the SMC Magnetic Lid Switch, and the iPhone's magnetic field. Is that true?
    Yes.
    Don't do it.

  • Wake on wireless possible?  Disable sleep when lid closed?

I just bought my first Mac & am still trying to figure some things out.
Is there a way to have it wake on wifi? I like to be able to connect to my machines when I'm at the office. My Macbook goes to sleep & then I can't remotely access it. Wake on LAN works fine, but I don't want to keep an ethernet cable plugged in.
Another thing I can't seem to get is how to disable the Macbook sleeping when I close the lid. On my old Windows laptop, I'd often put on a podcast & listen while falling asleep & have one start as an alarm clock in the morning. I like to keep the lid closed to keep out dust, etc.
I found a 3rd party app InsomniaX, but would rather find a supported way of doing this.

Insomniax is your best bet. The only other way would be have an external monitor, keyboard, and mouse hooked up.

  • Macbook Pro 13" will not sleep when I shut the lid

    Hello Community,
This is my first time using the forum. I have a macbook pro 13" 2009 model. Recently I had my MBP connected to an external monitor. I shut the lid while it was connected to the monitor and forgot to turn off my bluetooth mouse. Later that night the mouse was bumped, waking my macbook and setting it to clamshell mode. I put it to sleep again, opened the lid and woke it, but the LCD on the laptop did not turn on. I reset the PRAM and the NVRAM with no luck. I disconnected the monitor, rested the P/NVRAM and it would boot with the laptop screen and once everything was loaded my screen went black and then went to sleep on its own. I tried powering on and off using the P/NVRAM key commands...and nothing. So I opened the bottom case and physically disconnect the battery, reconnected the battery, put the bottom plate back on and powered it up. The screen began working again, now I have a new problem, the MBP WILL NOT sleep when I shut the lid anymore. I even reinstalled the OS and still no luck? If anyone has anything helpful that I could try to get this feature working again it would be much appreciated. If there is some terminal command I could try or some other troubleshooting method. I even put a magnet by the right side of the keyboard to try to trigger the sleep switch.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

I resolved my issue in a very unlikely way. In my earlier post I mentioned that I wiped my hard drive and was starting from scratch. Well I reinstalled windows 7 through bootcamp and it fixed my sleep issue. That's right folks...Windows fixed my mac. I think that it was an EFI issue. I think this because windows 7 uses EFI and during installation it must have reset the sleep values to normal. I feel when you reinstall Mac OSX the EFI partition on the drive should get wiped and reinstalled as well. I also feel that apple should have an option within System Prefs for the user to select what the way is that the computer responds when the lid is shut instead of the ritual of trickery and problems that the clamshell mode can cause.
    Hope this helps someone.

    Hey Everyone,
So after the latest update my Macbook pro no longer immediately sleeps after shutting the lid. It also won't sleep when 'sleep' is hit in the apple menu. It's actually really annoying as I need it for security.
