Stop motion iMovie

Hi
Im making a school project to make a stop motion movie, but Im having problems making my pictures into clips shorter than 1 sec. is there any way to make the pictures show for a shorter period of time or do I need to use a different program? If iMovie cant make the pictures into a movie then does anyone know of a program that can? (preferably free/not expensive)

  • Using Still images to create a stop motion film in imovie

Hi all, I'm trying to create a stop motion film in imovie using photo's I've taken with my camera, I've managed to put it all into the sequence I want, and even put background music on, but for some reason I can't stop imovie, panning in and out on individual photo's/clips of my film, so whereas when i flick through the photo's on my camera, it creates a pretty good stop motion film, but on movie it looks as though I've held everything by hand not using a tripod, making it jaunty and not playing well.
Does anyone know how to make it stop doing this? My friend hasn't been able to stop it from doing it either!
    Thanks

iMovie '08 installs with the Ken Burns Effects preference selected. When you add a photo, it is automatically added by turning it into a "still frame" sequence of frames at the default length with the KBE applied. To get rid of it make sure your "Project" aspect ratio matches the aspect of your photos. Then select the photo sequence in the "Project" window, select the "Crop" tool, and choose the "Fit" option in the preview window. This will get rid of the KBE. Now all you have to do is select any single frame in your "Project" sequence (or multiple frames if you want to "slow" down the final motion sequence in your project), split the sequence, and then discard the unwanted frames. (You could also use Command-C to temporally "store" your selected frame(s) to memory, discard the entire sequence and then use Command-V to paste the frame(s) in memory back into the project window at the proper location in your "timeline.")

  • Stop motion animation using iMovie by a child

Hi.  My six year old granddaughter has just become interested in stop motion animation.  How good is iMovie for this and what are the best learning tools / tutorials?

First, for Stop Motion Animation, there are better tools. These include iStopMotion and QuickTIme Pro Version 7.
If you want to do it in iMovie, it is possible, but slow.
First, go into iMovie Preferences, and make sure you check "Display Time as hh:mm:ss:frames". This will let you edit to the frame lever rather than to the nearest 10th of a second.
Second, see this Tutorial by Jon Walker on how to edit down to a single frame in a still image sequence.
You can modify his technique to get 2 or three frames.

  • Can I do a Stop Motion Movie in iMovie?

Can I make a stop motion video from a bunch of stills in iMovie? I can't figure out where to start... not to mention iMovie seems to think I'm in love with the Ken Burns effect, which I'm not and has applied it to every one of my frames. I can't remove it without doing it for each individual frame - painful! I recall iMovie being so simple and straight forward years ago but haven't used it in a long while. Now when I look at it I'm completely lost. Is this because I'm not starting out with video that it doesn't show me a timeline with my stills in it?

Can I make a stop motion video from a bunch of stills in iMovie?
Yes, if you have the patience. (It's probably easier with QT Pro -- i.e., "Open Image Sequence" File menu option.)
I can't figure out where to start...
Start by making/creating/separating the frames and ordering them.
not to mention iMovie seems to think I'm in love with the Ken Burns effect, which I'm not and has applied it to every one of my frames. I can't remove it without doing it for each individual frame - painful!
It's a lot easier if you change your "Initial Photo Placement" option in the "Project Properties..." window from "Ken Burns" to "Fit in Frame" before adding your material to the project."
Is this because I'm not starting out with video that it doesn't show me a timeline with my stills in it?
Try expanding your "clip icons" to "0.5 second" to create a two-dimensional "pseudo" timeline.

  • Imovie frame speed adjustment for stop motion

Now I'm on imovie 10.0.6, I can't seem to get the software to let me adjust my frame speed.
I'm working with stills, that I want to edit into a stop motion piece for some of the film, and show other images as stills for other sections.
The speed editor is greyed out, as is the FF option. Also, the duration is showing in seconds, where as in old imovie i would go into the preferences to show frames per second.
Any one overcome this issue and can help how I get the functionality I need?
    thanks

your workflow is - sorry to say that - a bit ... inconvenient
the usual workflow is: record using some plain green or blue background, create matte/key new background in, color-process video.
'matting by hand' skips 50 years of video-processing ...
you can accomplish that with iMovie, Motion or FCPX. iM and FCPX come with a bundle of 'presets' which allow similar coloring/contrasting/de-saturation as pixlr. FCPX for sure allows much more, in detail manual manipulations of color, although the 'video' tab in iMovie11 offers enough 'knobs' to create the few looks pixlr offers. Motion wouldn't be my first choice, as the app's name implies, it is basicly not meant for such simple color-corrections.

  • Making a stop motion movie with stills. Please help!

I have a question for someone really smart:)... I am making a stop motion movie on imac with still photos.  when i select a photo from iPhoto, and add it to the imovie project, it is adding multiples of each picture and i have NO idea why.  I dont know if i changed a setting somewhere or what.  This simple project went from fun to frustrating pretty quick.  Any help is GREATLY appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

    Hi
I would - to test and get project going
    • Start a New User account (Apple  Menu - down to System preferences / Accounts)
    • Log out and into this
    • Now test iMovie and see if all is OK
If not - the problem might lay in iPhoto photo-library - To try to mend this - YOU NEED TIMES - lot's of times - did it Yesterday > 8 hours !
When nothing but Mac OS is up and running
    • Keep alt+cmd-keys down - During Full Up-Start of iPhoto
    • Now You get a Menu
    • Select all options
    • KEEP Mac connected to Power-Mains as if lap-top battery might not last the full process
    • Have a nice day / book or whatever - as this will take long long time !

  • Problem with stop motion film

I want to make a stop motion movie. But when I upload the pictures imovie automatically makes them "zoom in". instead of each picture just shwoing it zzoms in and out of each one which looks stupid when you're trying ot make a stop motion.
    HELP?!

Go to FILE/PROJECT PROPERTIES and change the default action for your project. It is currently set to Ken Burns. Change it to FIT (letterbox) or CROP (will fill the screen by cropping your photo.)
This will work for new photos you bring into the project. For photos already their, use the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns Tool and select FIT or CROP.

  • Stop-Motion Filming

    Hello,
I am trying to make a stop-motion film and the photo duration settings aren't working properly. I am using iMovie 6.0.2. I am not using Ken Burns.
The default photo duration seems to be 9:29. To change this default, I have found the answer in a previous post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2635892

For some reason my post got cut off.
*me wonders if it had anything to do with the fact that I was using a Windows machine at the time...*
Well. I was saying Karl found a clever way in the above link for the photo duration to actually do what you tell it to (thanks, Karl).
    1. Throw out iMovie preferences.
    2. Drag a photo to the timeline, double click it and set the desired time, close the box.
    3. Click the picture in the timeline again once to select it.
    4. Open photo settings window (duration should reflect that of the image in the time line).
    5. Then select and apply as many photos from the media → photos pane to the timeline as you want, and they should all have the same photo duration as the first selected picture already in the timeline.
The above solution seems to work, but it’s a very fragile process. If I don’t throw out the preferences as many times as it appears, the first photo in the group of step 5 will be a hundreth faster than the original photo already in the timeline (I have no idea why), and the rest will be 9:29. Is there any way to simply change the default 9:29 to something else?
My second question is about changing the duration of multiple photos that are already in the timeline. This problem was discussed here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=964450&#964450
But I don’t understand what is meant here. Catspaw said: “you must include an IMPORTED still among the highlighted stills you wish to modify. Then when you do the KB duration adjustment and 'Apply', the change is reflected in ALL of the stills. If necessary, then trash the imported still.”
Aren’t all of the images in the timeline (which I dragged from the media →photos pane) ‘imported’? What does it mean to include ‘an imported still’? I’m trying to change a number of images already imported to the timeline, and setting the time in the photo settings window and hitting update doesn’t do anything. I’m not suing Ken Burns. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Stop-Motion sticking after 21 frames

    Hi,
I teaching my art class stop motion animation at the moment, in the past I have had no problems with imovie, but this year 2 students are experiencing their movie sticking after 21 frames. The movie looks as if it continues to play until the end but the picture pauses on frame 21. Does anyone have any idea what causes this?
Thanks in advance for your help.

The things you are talking about doing sound better-suited for a video editing program like Premiere. After Effects is not intended to edit video.
That being said, if you want to use After Effects for its compositing and motion graphics capabilities, you should really start here: http://adobe.ly/AE_basics
You've already been confused by how playback works and there are many more little things that will frustrate you if you don't get a good, solid foundation in how to use the software.
And, for forum readers of the future who may have a similar question, you initiate a RAM preview by pressing 0 on your number pad. More info about previewing video and audio here and in the link I gave earlier.
If you want to make a frame last longer, you could use Time Remapping on an image sequence or a composition that contains your stills instead of trying to move layers around by hand.
Now, to your issue of it not playing everything, is your composition long enough? If it is, but it's just not RAM previewing the whole thing, read this.

  • Making a stop motion movie

Hi, i've recently shot a stop motion movie. I have transferred the pictures into Iphoto, and opened them up in Imovie, but when i try to add them with a 0:03 frame rate via the photo settings, it does nothing! HELP!

You could save a lot of time (no imports into iPhoto or iMovie) by creating your video using a dedicated stop motion software app.
You could also upgrade QuickTime Player to "Pro" ($30) and use the import Image Sequence to build the video. It takes only a few minutes.
Export this file as DV Stream (or not) and you can use it in iMovie to use its features (titles, transitions and effects).
iMovie is a DV editing app. Any file format other than .dv will be converted to it.
You're working with image formats and you may not even want the conversion to "video".
Tell us the destination format you want to implement and we can help you decide the best course.

  • REALLY fast stop motion..HELP!

So I am trying to make a stop motion using imovie 09 and it wont let me make the clips shorter then .1 seconds...does anybody know how I can make them shorter? I am trying to make this REALLY fast...Help!! This is for a major film project I am working on. All help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

that's right. for smooth stop-motion, you need 1 frame per second.
you need tools as QuicktimePro vers7, which allows to convert a folder of pics into a smooth stream of video, or designated stop-motion tools as framebyframe (free) or iStopMotion ($$, therefor much more elaborated&convenient).

  • Frames in stop motion

Hi, I'm creating a stop motion animation for an assignment. But for some reason, every time I try to put in the frame length as 0.25 it automatically becomes 0.24, it's the same with frames of 0.5 which become 0.48.
I'm making an animation to music... so the frames have to be exact. Can you give me any tips?
    Thanks so much

welcome Carla McGlynn to the  iMovie boards ...
video has standards.. as PAL=25fps, NTSC=29.97fps .. iM08 can handle only 'some' fractions of this..
for stopmotion, there are other, 'better' tools to consider:
QTpro - which converts with a snap any 'picture sequence' into video
iStopMotion - which is a cheap but excellent specialized app
FramebyFrame - new, doing almost the same..
and, I would recommend iMHD6 (free download at ), although it seems, I'm the only one who's able to teach it a 00:00:01 (=1 frame) picture length...
(we had a few discussions about that, I had to upload a screengrab to 'proof' my position...)

  • Import from iphoto for stop-motion?

Hi, I'm trying to import photos from an iPhoto album for a stop-motion project, but the durations don't get set.
I select all the photos from the album (Media -> Photos). In the Photo Settings I've turned off the Ken Burns effect. In the duration box (next to the turtle) I type "0:03". When I click Apply, the photos are imported, but the duration for every photo is set to "9:29". If I go in manually to every photo I can reset the durations, but as you can imagine, with stop-motion there are a lot of photos!
Can anyone help? I'm using iMovie HD 6. I've tried a normal DV and MPEG-4 project with the same results.
    TIA...

    Hi,
I just tested your method. You should be ok with it. But, I did a couple of things differently.
    1. Selected the first photo in the Photos pane. Instead of typing in the 0:03 for the duration, I moved the slider all the way to the left, giving the 0:03 setting. Didn't hit 'Apply.'
    2. Then, I clicked on a group of photos to import. Didn't select a lot of them; did 44 at at time. Dragged them to the timeline where I wanted them.
    Worked fine.
I tried it clicking on 'Apply' but that put the photos at the end of my timeline. Maybe that is ok for you as you are importing your photos, but it is not good if you want the imported photos somewhere else, such as in the middle of your movie.

  • Video stop-motion

I'd like to do some simple stop-motion stuff with the Mac. I'm intending to do this with a video camera straight into clips. Essentially what I need to be able to do is to tell iMovie to import just (say) 5 frames.
    So I can do:
    position
    capture
    position
    capture...
    move to timeline
How can this be done easily?

    Alexander,
iMovie has a basic time lapse feature built-in.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/6.0/en/imv1203.html
For more sophisticated stop-motion work, you should have a look at an application called iStopMotion.
