Stop-Motion sticking after 21 frames

Hi,
I teaching my art class stop motion animation at the moment, in the past I have had no problems with imovie, but this year 2 students are experiencing their movie sticking after 21 frames. The movie looks as if it continues to play until the end but the picture pauses on frame 21. Does anyone have any idea what causes this?
Thanks in advance for your help.

The things you are talking about doing sound better-suited for a video editing program like Premiere. After Effects is not intended to edit video.
That being said, if you want to use After Effects for its compositing and motion graphics capabilities, you should really start here: http://adobe.ly/AE_basics
You've already been confused by how playback works and there are many more little things that will frustrate you if you don't get a good, solid foundation in how to use the software.
And, for forum readers of the future who may have a similar question, you initiate a RAM preview by pressing 0 on your number pad. More info about previewing video and audio here and in the link I gave earlier.
If you want to make a frame last longer, you could use Time Remapping on an image sequence or a composition that contains your stills instead of trying to move layers around by hand.
Now, to your issue of it not playing everything, is your composition long enough? If it is, but it's just not RAM previewing the whole thing, read this.

You have fragments (leftovers) beyond the end of the Timeline content that you intended.
I am going from an Elements Windows workspace, so please translate into Mac accordingly.
Expand your Timeline content to the maximum with the Zoom Out Zoom In slider above the Timeline.
Press the End key of the computer keyboard. That should take the Timeline Indicator to the fragments which must be deleted.
Explore all the tracks in that area.
Repeat the End key press until the Timeline Indicator stops at the end of the intended Timeline and not some 3 hours afterward.
What you find at "end of track" could be fragments or files that you moved out of the way of the active project and forgot were there.
The fragments typically present as thin vertical black lines scattered about the tracks.
Please let us know the outcome.
    Thank you.

  • Stop motion chroma screen problem for multi frames

I am trying to use green screen for stop motion movies and I do know how to set it for each frame but how do you get all the frames to accept a single back ground picture at once? I have to insert the effect one at a time into each frame. I cannot use "select all" and then insert...the option will only work on single frames which for hundreds of frames is very time consumming. Is there a batch frames work around?
    Thanks
    Kevin

Just remember that doing the Paste Attributes will add ALL the effects from the copied clip to ALL of the selected clips. Any effects already applied to those clips will still remain expect for Adjust, Motion or Opacity keyframes, those will be overwritten.
Best to practice on one or two clips to see what the results will be before doing a large group of them.

  • Imovie frame speed adjustment for stop motion

Now I'm on imovie 10.0.6, I can't seem to get the software to let me adjust my frame speed.
I'm working with stills, that I want to edit into a stop motion piece for some of the film, and show other images as stills for other sections.
The speed editor is greyed out, as is the FF option. Also, the duration is showing in seconds, where as in old imovie i would go into the preferences to show frames per second.
Any one overcome this issue and can help how I get the functionality I need?
    thanks

your workflow is - sorry to say that - a bit ... inconvenient
the usual workflow is: record using some plain green or blue background, create matte/key new background in, color-process video.
'matting by hand' skips 50 years of video-processing ...
you can accomplish that with iMovie, Motion or FCPX. iM and FCPX come with a bundle of 'presets' which allow similar coloring/contrasting/de-saturation as pixlr. FCPX for sure allows much more, in detail manual manipulations of color, although the 'video' tab in iMovie11 offers enough 'knobs' to create the few looks pixlr offers. Motion wouldn't be my first choice, as the app's name implies, it is basicly not meant for such simple color-corrections.

  • Frames in stop motion

Hi, I'm creating a stop motion animation for an assignment. But for some reason, every time I try to put in the frame length as 0.25 it automatically becomes 0.24, it's the same with frames of 0.5 which become 0.48.
I'm making an animation to music... so the frames have to be exact. Can you give me any tips?
    Thanks so much

welcome Carla McGlynn to the  iMovie boards ...
video has standards.. as PAL=25fps, NTSC=29.97fps .. iM08 can handle only 'some' fractions of this..
for stopmotion, there are other, 'better' tools to consider:
QTpro - which converts with a snap any 'picture sequence' into video
iStopMotion - which is a cheap but excellent specialized app
FramebyFrame - new, doing almost the same..
and, I would recommend iMHD6 (free download at ), although it seems, I'm the only one who's able to teach it a 00:00:01 (=1 frame) picture length...
(we had a few discussions about that, I had to upload a screengrab to 'proof' my position...)

  • (Urgent) Stop Motion Animation in After Effects?

THIS IS URGENT I need to make a stop motion out of a series of pictures that i took but i need a simple way to do it instead of having to individually drag and edit the shots. Is there anyway you can import a serise of shots as a sequence or something? Or is there another Adobe Software that is good for stop motion? THANKS

Are you asking about importing a series of still images as a still-image sequence?

  • Stop motion in FCP7

    Hi there,
Sorry for the stupid questions that are about to be asked...I'm a bit of a beginner.
I'm looking to prepare stop motion animations using hundreds of photographs and FCP7....and I have three questions:
    - How do I adjust the speed? I've been on the 'Duration' and 'Speed' menus but cannot adjust it to obtain the desired speed.
    - I couldn't workout how to rotate my photos? (This is probably the mother of all stupid questions). Sorry.
    - Finally, is there a shortcut that takes all the items on the timeline and puts them next to each other, deleting any blanks in between?
Thanks for your patience and your time. Much appreciated.
    Greg.

So, to answer your last question first: No, there is no way in FCP to execute a "Close All Gaps" function. This would be helpful in many instances. You may consider going to the Final Cut Pro Feedback page and recommending it.
Next: How are you dealing with your stills in FCP? Sounds like to me you're just bringing in all the individual images into FCP and then arranging them in a timeline. First off, let me say, that you're dealing with an "Image Sequence", something that, frankly, FCP is NOT very adept with. But there's a couple of things you may try...
Try adjusting the "Still/Freeze Duration" in FCP's preferences.
You'll know better than us how long the frames should be: 1 frame each, 2? 5? Up to you. But note that this setting only takes effect AFTER you've set it up and added clips to a timeline. Meaning: if you already have a timeline full of still clips that are 5 frames each and then adjust the "master" duration in preferences to 2 frames, the 5 frame bits will not, all of a sudden, become 2 frames.
So you set up your prefs. then add to timeline. If you don't like the speed, then delete the stills from the timeline, adjust the master duration, and re-add to timeline. It's going to be trial and error. But if you set up the duration, select your first clip, then hold shift and select your last clip (still) and do an "Insert" then all your clips are going to butt-up to each other with NO gaps. So this sort of "fixes" your close-all-gaps issue.
Other than that, the only thing I can think of is:
A.) Use QuickTime to open up the folder full of stills, as an Image Sequence, (under QT's "File" menu) and adjust the frame-rate there, before exporting to a QT movie. However, I can see this leading to some weirdness potentiall: If you're aiming for a 24 frames/sec. sequence (as an example) but your still sequence, in QuickTime, looks right when playing back at 15 frames/sec., there's going to be frame-holding and general un-smoothness when you put this mismatched movie into a 24 frame sequence back in FCP. However, if you're OK being "stuck" with a sequence whose frame rate your exported QT movie - whatever that frame rate my be - then it's that big of a deal, I suppose.
B.) Get the frame rate looking close in FCP, using the "Still/Duration" preferences, as mentioned first. Then "nest" this sequence and apply time-remapping to the new nested sequence to get some fine-tuning of the speed.
Hope this helps and wasn't too complicated. Like I said before, unfortunately, FCP is not great when dealing with Image Sequences.

  • Stop motion with flash

    Hi everyone.
i want to create an animation with stop motion. Create a sequence with 160 photos  numbered continuous.
    It's with flash cs3.
    thanks a lot!

It will be easy if you have your photos all named in a similar and sequential manner (ex: img1, img2, img3, etc) located in the same folder.  All you need to do is start the process of importing the first image to the stage, and midway thru that the program should recognize it is part of a series of images and will ask if you want to import the whole series, which you will say yes to.  I think it also asks if you want them arranged frame after frame (or assumes it), so you should end up with all of the images planted in the timeline for you in sequence.

  • Stop motion animation

    Hi,
Can quicktime pro be used to create stop motion animation? If so how do you do it?
    Thanx
    Dave

Mmmm... not really... but you could...
If you create all your frames in photoshop (i assume you're wanting to
make 2-d animation rather than traditional 3d models) and export them in a numerical order (frame1, frame2 frame3 etc etc), then take them in to quicktime as an image sequence, then export from QT as a movie etc...
I guess it is possible, but quite an inefficient way of doing it... After Effects is good for this kind of thing as you can create all your frames in photoshop, in one file, as layers, then import the one PS file and all the layers will be present... you can also manipulate frame rates much easier in AE... most animation (traditional 2d/3d models) doubles up on frames, so you have (in PAL land) 12 frames per second... easy to do in AE.

I want to import still images to make a stop motion animation, but when I try to change the duration of still images, it isn't reflected in the timeline.  How can I do this?

    Tonaw,
If you import your still images using iPhoto, then the time you set for each still, using FCPX Perferences works.
You can set the durantion from 1 frame to as long as you want them view.
If you do not use iPhoto to import your stills, the default is 10 sec's.
FYI: This issue was brought up within a month after FCPX was released. They found out by using iPhoto, you had better control of the amount of time your still was viewed.

  • Best way to make a Stop Motion on FCE?

I didnt realy do much research on this topic to be honest. only way i figured i could do a stop motion would be to just take all the stills and make them realy short next to eachother. Is there a way to simotaniosly change all of their durations? once again, this may very well be right under my nose and very obvious to everyone, but im in no rush to get an answer so i thought id just post it here and award some points .
    -Josh M

    Hi again Josh,
You've a few options here. If you've got Photoshop and a decent stills camera, you can get the photos into Photoshop and make any group adjustments necessary by batch automating the process (i. re-size, change pixel aspect ratio, apply any filters/effects) before batch importing into Final Cut.
If you scroll down to the "next you need to automate this process" paragraph in this post, you'l get a description of how to do this.
If you don't have Photoshop, you can do this using a video camera - just record a couple of seconds at a time and go Modify>make freeze frame (after setting the freeze frame duration in the editing tab of the user preferences menu)
Be prepared for a long shoot!

  • Stop Motion Animation Capture

Is there a option to capture one frame at a time thru Final Cut Pro 5.0 to do stop motion animation? My camera is attached via firewire. Adobe Premiere has a stop motion button that captures one frame at a time.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

the issue with using the digital still camera is that you will create large image files (not really a big deal) but framethief is a simple shoot & capture & import
    <
    Nonsense.
All DSLRs give you wide choice of image sizes and compressions.
The advantages of shooting with an SLR far outweigh the perceived limitations but they require thoroughly understanding your animation project's needs. The documentation on Tim Burton's "Corpse Bride" and many other stop-action films shot with still cameras is extensive. It's great fun to research. You'll spend hours on google looking for various stop-action proejcts. Lots of these animators are artists or students, gladly sharing their techniques on their sites or blogs. if you find one you like, post it.
There are cults of animators who shoot with still cameras and bring the frames into After Effects for processing with time remapping, frame blending and many other effects. Incredible stuff. Try google for Patrick Siemer, a visual effects artist at Pixar. He is featured in the new AE7 CIB from Adobe.

  • Making Car Racing Stop Motion

    I need a help.
I'm using imovie 09, and now trying to make a stop motion about car racing there. I took around 700 photos, with a tripod in order to make a photo not to moving. Then I put all the photos into iMovie, set the duration between each of photo at the second max of 0:1s, (is it the max fastest we can adjust in imovie?) . Can we make it faster cos after adjusting, the frame playing doesnt look smooth and run slowly through each frame.
Actually this is my first time doing stop motion and i dont have any experience doing this, I just think the more step-by-step photos i take, the more smoothier the frame can run. I'm doing about car racing, I want my car run more faster through frames, is there anyone here know how to solve this problems ? Please tell me, i really need a help.

    for a stop-motion-project, iM isn't first choice ..
it does NOT allow 1 Photo = 1 frame as 'speed'
QuicktimePro allows import of so-called Picture Sequences and instantly converts such into any wanted 'movie'-format with any frame-rate, e.g. to process the movie in iM, adding titles, dissolves, etc.
Or, consider specialized tools as http://www.boinx.com/istopmotion/overview/ or the free (less stable...) http://web.mac.com/philipp.brendel/Software/FrameByFrame.html ...
and Welcome NCY to the  boards ...

  • What programs/functions do I need to master in order to create stop motion animation?

    Hi,
Im just starting a new job, and will be creating a handful of films for my new employer.
I want to create something interesting, and have been leaning towards stop motion animation.
What initially inspired me was this music video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfcHq0hhFWg
To me, it looks like a bunch of stop motion ( ex; the paper balls and hand colored individual frames of the guy playing guitar), paired with some digital animation (walruses). Please correct me if I am wrong about this.
So - to focus my question:
    1) What program does one use to play all the individual pictures taken to create the stop motion animation? In other words, once I have shot all the individual pictures of the objects I want to animate, and am ready to organize them and set a playback speed, what program would I use? Do most people just throw all the pictures into final cut and do it that way?? Or is there a better program?
    and
    2) How do you cut portions of pictures / drawings / frames out to allow for a deep layering effect? I figure most people take each frame and manipulate it individually using photoshop (cutting portions of an image out so something else can be seen through the void). But is there a better way??
For example, lets say I have two crecent shaped pieces of black paper, and I want them to move towards each other from the left and right sides of the screen, and eventually completely obscure whatever is going on in the background behind the paper images. First I would take a series of pictures, moving the pieces of paper in small increments, until they closed the gap and overlapped each other. From that point, I would lay down whatever video I wanted playing in the background into the timeline. Next, I would import the series of photos with the pieces of paper moving towards each other - then comes the problem. The portion of the pictures used for the animation that is NOT PAPER would be obscuring my background video. So at this point, is it easier to shoot the animation against a white background and just chroma key the white out? Or do most people cut the non paper part out using photoshop? or is there a better way?

Easy to search the app store, as mentioned, or just google stop motion for macintosh. Mastering the application is easy. Learning how to animate is where you need to start.

In the odlen days, we used multiplane stages. Each set of drawings was placed on a glass stage, one under the other. INcredibly fun, absurdly difficult to keep clean and properly lit. Now all of that stuff is done with alpha channels and compositing software like Motion or Afer Effects.

Umm, yes. You're only guessing. And, honestly (Did you want honesty?), your heart may be in this but you don't have much a clue. Techniques and effects (and the experience to guide the decisions to do them in camera, on the shooting stage, or in software) are not where you start animation. You start by learning how cameras work, how shutter speed and f-stop relate to ISO speed, how to shoot on-2s (or if you should), how to do eases and stretches and squishes, how to develop characterization in inanimate objects so you can invoke emotive responses from the audience, how to shoot to hooks in the soundtrack, how to plan, how to storyboard, how to budget time, how to establish and maintain quality shooting conditions, how to do animatic or rough tests, how to learn from the tests, how to have fun, how to make money, how to get it done.
This is kind of like saying you've just inherited a hundred acres and are thinking about getting into farming. You plant some seeds and do some stuff and then pick it and sell it. How hard can it be?
